  • In this video I build a dust cyclone using a street cone and a 5 gal bucket
    I use a couple pieces of scrap plywood and a 8 foot 2x4 for supports
    I also use a propane torch to heat up some 2 inch PVC to fit my shop vac hose .
    This is a cost effective way to build a dust cyclone for a shop vac that anyone can make for just a few bucks with a few parts
    Stuff I used in the video

      "Brilliance" or "oddity?" That "brilliant" aluminum bat punch is definitely *very* sketchy. 1st off, I can think of a dozen better uses for an old bat. 2nd It is SO EASY to cut that material with snips. Faster, better, safer, & you get the size hole you want. I've built hold-punches for commercial applications and this punch is as bad as they come. I've never seen worse. This whole bat thing struck me as the result of not having sufficient analytical skills to come up with a better solution. PVC melt-joining is "brilliant?" I can't be the only one that routinely works with plastics. FYI it's kind of a normal thing to do in joining plastics. Not all plastics can be joined this way, each plastic has particular characteristics and some will join themselves readily, other's won't at all. Some offer a weak joint, some a strong, it's all variable. I'm guessing you're kind of new at making stuff, or perhaps just a drunken bromance post, whichever I do agree with you on the rotating table. That was snazzy.

  • @oldowl4290
    @oldowl4290 8 років тому +6

    I would assume you would want the interior of the cone to remain as smooth as possible for the vortex airflow. By adding in all those internal screws to each 2x2 (which also did not seem necessary to do at all) you seem to have limited the intended purpose of vortex airflow.

    • @josephmorgan8370
      @josephmorgan8370 5 років тому

      A healthy bead of construction adhesive or other tough glue along the inner edge of 2x2 would work in place of screws.

      Having two means he can have One cyclone permanetly attatched to His primary tool and move around the secondary as needed.
      It also allows for double "filtration" so the shop vac filter will remain unclogged for longer periods of time.
      Also easier to empty the buckets individually into tall dumpsters or move around generally.

    After all the research I've done, I've picked your basic design as how to make mine.
    Will basically be a carbon copy, with some mods of course, thats what DIY is all about!
    My needs are also currently less than yours.
    But I will connect my lil 2hp shop vac with 2 inch pvc to the top of the cyclone, then the standard 1 1/4 shop vac tube it came with to run out of the cyclone to my tools/whatever.
    My thinking is the 2 inch from the shop vac will allow maximum airflow but not lots of pressure, then the 1 1/4 (only 1 if you count some of the tool, will have plenty of pressure to suck up dust. And it'll really be moving, so less will get sucked up by the shop vac fitting at the top (high cfm, low pressure 2 inch pipe).
    I'll let you know how it goes!
    Also, I have no planar, lathe,, band saw table saw (although making a table I can use my circular saw, router, and jigsaw as fixed vertical tools).
    So I think this set up will work for now. I also live in an apartment,so thats a real limitation.
    Only thing I think you missed was the fact that these dust collection systems work great for most debris, but can't really capture sub 5 micron dust, which is by far the worst for your health. So I outfitted my shop vac with a HEPA filter (claims 99.97% at 0.3 micron). IT was pricey, 50 bucks, but will make a huge difference for your health, not just easy cleanup.
    Thanks for the thorough, detailed video, have a good one eh,
    Peace
    Chris

    I am beginning to wonder: Why do you need a cone shape anyway? I don't think it actually figures into the aerodynamic properties.

    • @davejoseph5615
      @davejoseph5615 4 роки тому

      But is that a proven fact or just an assumption? Obviously you need a circular path where the air can spin and an upward exit in the center for the air to leave the chamber. The dust is going to settle downward and needs an exit on the bottom of the spin chamber. It could be a cone or a slot. I seen it done either way.

  • @WAVETUBE84
    @WAVETUBE84 9 років тому +1

    Cool stuff Pat. Great low-buck McGuyver trick! Maybe you could make one addition: a deeper dust chamber. Maybe hobble two 5 gal. buckets together. All that you would do is butt two 5gal buckets, base to base, and screw and glue them together. You'd have to cut out all but a inch or two of the centers, so the dust can fall to the bottom container. Maybe sandwich some plywood or something to increase the rigidity, etc. Then glue the lid to the bottom container (or not?). Voila! You got a 10 gal dust receptacle! Or convert a trashcan into a dust chamber? RubberMaid Brute trash cans are durable, have pretty good lids, and even have the wheeled dolly attachment. But, them Rubbermaid/Brute trash cans aren't cheap. And you'd have to build some sort of internal frame to keep the trash can from collapsing. I think that may be departing from the essence of your video: make it at ultra low cost (dirt cheap!). Whatever volume you need. Just some ideas. Cool video, real simple!

    Good build. Word of caution. Use electrical PVC instead of plumbing PVC. Electrical is designed to be heated without releasing any deadly chemicals. If you have to use plumbing PVC, do it in a well ventilated area. I had to bend custom 22.5 degree bends for pressure in a sewer plant years ago with our electrical hot box. We did it outside and due to the amount of bends, the odor was still obnoxious.

    you have a lathe why not turn a mandrel and use that to swage the pipes a lot easier, look out for a hot air gun or nick the wife's hair dryer, { note you have no need of one ,}, ,also please use the guards on the machines, I been wood machining for 67 years and still doing it, shuddered when you passed you arm over the blade and noticed the roving knife was missing they are there for a reason, as is the over head guard , other wise great work Patrick ,had you thought about marking the stays temp screw and remove then drill all the holes ,just a thought ,Gkids just lost their practice parking cones hIHI.

    Great video but a few mistakes, the worst one is your straight pipe coming through center of lid and the angled pipe at top of cone are wrong. The straight pipe should come only a few inches in the vortex and the angled pipe should sit a few inches below that. Otherwise youre just sucking saw dust before it has a chance to fall to bottom of bucket

    cut of 1/3 from bottom out of your bucket and put in in to a new bucket this you don't have to open up anything to dump the Bucket you just lift up the whole thing and everything go to the Bucket below. If you don't have a good seal don't push down to hard put a strip of shop rag or any soft door seal or strip of foam glued evenly on the out side of the primary bucket to prevent dust.

    Instead of a blow torch I would have used a heat gun which works just as well and doesn't leave burn marks like the torch did. And the cuts on the bucket lid are easier to make when the knife gets heated. You may lose one blade but its a lot less elbow grease wasted.

    Nice job, it works good. I don't have one of those cones, but gonna try it with a simple bucket. When i saw the baseball-bat i thought you were gonna heat it and melt trough. See your cyclone rotates counter-clockwise, does it work better than clockwise? By the way, nice chop-saw solution :)

    I have already made a cone cyclone dust collector. It works very good but i have to do some modification, such as a bigger bucket, add some wheels too. What is your opinion about the depth on extraction pipe in the cone?

    Hey great video. Why didn't you just swap out the collection bucket (5 gal.) up to a full size trash bin? Looks like you could easily unbolt the plywood flanges from the bucket lid and attach them to another lid on a larger vessel. I am planning my own collector and curious if you considered this. Thanks.

    Buenas noches, me podrias indicar las medidas que tuvieron en cuenta para el diseño, y el potencial de la bomba de aspiración? te agradezco mucho!
    Good night , could you tell me the measures taken into account for the design, the flow, and the potential of the suction pump ? thank you so much!

    Hopefully you did not breathe much of the fumes from burning the PCV pipe. Btw, you could have accomplished this task by using a heat gun, easier to control than propane flame.

    How much does a street cone cost, and how does that compare to just buying an Oneida cyclone? I appreciate the creative design, but I'm just curious if this really saves any money after adding up all the material..../shrug. Also, you can go buy a plastic 55 gallon drum, and would only need one cyclone, instead of two smaller ones. Just a thought. Enjoyed your video though.

    I made one a few years ago - out of a cone as well... I need to reinforce it with wood bars like you did... then it won't collapse... I quit using it. Now... I'll make better thanks to your help. Nice vid. :) I like that you utilize your small spaces well (Chop saw etc)

    if your too lazy to empty your bucket all the time like ME! haha get rid of the bucket and get yourself one of those 55 gallon blue plastic drums, mine sits in the corner of my metal shop and works great! I'm also in the process of building a wood shop and will make one for that shop too. Love your cone idea so smart i have two of them in my back yard i bought for a project and have not touched them since, i will make my new one with it thanks to your video great job!!! Thank you!!!!!

    Hey bring the cones back to my Jobs eight! I almost got hit by traffic!
    I'm joking...
    You need a 20 to 55 gallon steel barrel with a removable top, then you can work out a chip shield for this and an old furnace motor and fan for a vacume as a vacume and just vent what dust might get past it outside.
    I've got an old furnace motor I'll do this with into a case and put filters on it recuse I do not want to vent it outside of my basement and loose the condition air.
    You can always use a 2 stage dust collector after the cyclone with a 3 micro filter and have the filter last longer.

    What about using 4" pipe with the traffic cone. I bought a HF HP and I thought of using the cone separator with it if effective. I hope the heating of the pipe will work well with 4" PVC. Love the flipping saw.

      @Patricksworkshop  8 років тому

      +Robert Burgy you know I don't have a four-inch dust collectorOnly the shop vac so I wouldn't know anything about that size ,I do figure that the more CFM's you have you risk the chance of sucking the cone in and collapsing the cone therefore blockage would be a problem, I hope you figure out what you need to do you know what if you figured out please make a video butHey be awesome to see what you come up with thank you so much for watching I'm glad you love my flipping saw thank you so much

    Everyone keep your silicone tubes where you can see them... He now has Two "cyclones" that need to be sealed... lol, or you can be like the road crews looking up and down the street where they "Lost" their cones...
    ... Nice vid though, the ghetto "frugalness" stayed consistent throughout and was pretty creative... but if the Bucket fills up that quick, why don't you just enlarge the lid to fit a garbage can instead? .. there might be a half a second delay on suction when it starts up while the larger volume equalizes to the low pressure, but after that there won't be a difference in suction/performance (with the exception of the larger capacity)...
    ...and people frequently (once a week or two) "try to throw out" their garbage cans with their garbage... but the garbage men refuse to take the can... and just leave them lying on the side of the street.
    *** oh, and to everyone else, you might in addition to keeping an eye on your silicone, you might also want to watch your garbage can on trash day... I'm getting the feeling "someone" might have tipped him off that they're easy targets...

    Patrick I know you posted this long ago. However, I wanted to thank you for the inspiration. I have mine started in my shop now. So far I have made everything with stuff I have salvaged or had on hand. Total cost so far is ZERO.
    I am coming up to the point where I may have to spend some money on hose and PVC.
    I think I may have to wait for this weekend to finish but it is coming along quite well.
    Quick question if you don't mind. How did you calculate the circle of plexiglass for the inside of the cone?

  • @MtnBadger
    @MtnBadger 6 років тому

    Very good video. For the person who has the tools, the time AND can get the right cone. I fear it is worth my time to buy a cyclone (or build a less "complete" model). But... Kudos for the ad hock engineering. I've done much of that in my life, often living where "store bought" just isn't an option.
    Poor cone. They catch hell all day long... Then get their poor little noses cut off.

    I like your design and construction of the separator, well done. This may have already been said, but, wouldn't you be better off using something of 10 to 20 (or more perhaps) gallon collection container instead of five gallons?
