Example: The leg curl and leg extension can improve someone's ability to sprint to some degree, but does that make these exercises functional? NO! Because they don't improve function (sprinting) at an OPTIMAL level. Exercises like a sled push, and Single Leg RDL, and lunges would be considered functional.
light sled pulls r better for sprinting since your allowed to use your arms for momentum. Single Leg RDL is just stupid. Lunges, specifically walking lunges r decent

Depends on your goals. If your goal is to increase strength and muscle size than doing hypertrophy is better than whatever athletic training they're talking about. Unless your goal is to get better at a sport or activity. These guys fail to understand that not everyone has the same goals

I don’t know about you but leg extensions fixed my knee pain for good and made locking out heavy squats much more comfortable and translated to American football well.

I'm pretty sure the Rios twins have stated that machines are great if you're recovering from injury or simply using them as an accessory excerises to see if they benefit your core excersises

Again, they are not against people doing machines to recover from injuries or to target small parts of the physique which are hard to hit, but he says that you should not make these machine exercises your main exercises to build muscles, and prioritize the Compound lifts like squat, deadlift, bench, which some people ditch for the machines completely

But yeah just keep taking him out of context. If you dont care about training for a sport/activity and your goal is to increase strength then why would you not do hypertrophy training?

That's what my issue is, is that he is trying to make it seem like Sean is advocating for different training approaches than he is. Hypertrophy training is functional training and is as functional as training athletically, just depends on goals.
Clearly, u don't understand what the Rio bros are here for they are here to try and advocate for more functional training the reason why is bcuz a lot of guys go to the gym they expect to be able to fight or to do better in sports which doesn't really happen if u only train with machines, functional training is becoming less popular due to the popularity of machines, in other videos they have said Isolation excerises are fine but u but you should try and limit it as much as possible aka if the excerise can be done standing up or without extra support then do it that way . If you watch their long form videos or read some of the comments, u realize that these shorts are designed to be like this. Finally to your point about athletes yes they do some but it's a lot less then your avg gym goer.
@@coolyboy475 that's not true at all. The reality is the vast majority of people going to the gym are just trying to build muscle and look good. What's the fastest way to do that? Hypertrophy training. Doing exercises sitting down also has their benefits as opposed to doing them standing up there are advantages to both. It is good to get in a mixture of free weights and machines whether you are an athlete or not. They contradict themselves all the time. They advocate so heavily for the bench press but guess what? You can do that standing up too. It's called the cable press. And BTW literally everyone says to prioritize compound lifts over isolation exercises INCLUDING bodybuilders. Anyone else is just lying to you. You should probably go watch Sean's original full video because his whole point is that hypertrophy training doesn't focus on athletic skills but if you aren't training for a sport then you are just wasting your time.
@coolyboy475 they're here to take people out of context and post toxic videos. Most of the people he shows clips of aren't advocating to only use machines. Claiming that training if you're not training for a sport is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. Strength training helps the body as you age. I've completely gotten rid of my back pain from Strength training and it also helps your bones as you age.

Basically, Sean's point is that bodybuilding is functional because it's better than doing nothing, which is obviously true. Mario's point is that, to declare something as "functional" it has to be 100% optimal for that function that you want to train.
For example, if I were to do leg curls to improve sprinting, it's functional to some degree and I will improve a bit, but if I do stuff like plyos, I'm going to improve significantly more at that function (sprinting) that I'd do with leg curls.

@@Cosmicbeagule I recommend watching his videos because the rios brothers take him largely out of context all of the time. Sean has never once said to only do leg extensions. In fact he says it is important to include compound exercises and isolation (which all athletes do as well btw).

Not everyone needs the functionality of an MMA artist, if youre build good muscle, have a few machines, have some freeweight movements, you use good form and rom, you work out every muscle, youre gonna be better off than like 80% of people when natural. There are people who have never touched a weight that are healthy, never broke a bone and live til 90

Functionality is practically useless since the only thing he counts as functional is sports based actions. A fat person who's never done sports is better off training and gaining some muscle and losing some fat, not training to run fast which he's probably never thought about in the first place...
And if he wanted to become a functional athlete his first stop would be a combat arts gym not a conventional gym.
