Eyes Wide Shut is my fave Kubrick film too. Don't get me wrong, I love his other films. But everytime I watch Eyes Wide Shut its like I'm seeing all these things I never saw before.
Have to wonder if he didn't die what other greats would he have gone on to make, especially if he could branch out from his usual genre stuff to something women might be more interested in too.
It's dope how even though I knew I'd heard all of this before you can edit and match with the scenes he's describing what he's saying into a whole new very enjoyable video kudos.
Eyes Wide Shut is butchered in home video releases. Warner bros needs to hurry up and do a 4K master from the original negative, because it looked great in cinemas.
Yea, even with streaming its a mess. Paramount is showing the bastardized version of EWS and i think they even blew up the 4:3 ratio to the full screen and it looks even worse. I think HBO and Netflix had the correct cut, aspect ratio etc.
Hi, please say more. I watched it at the cinema when it first came out and every five years I watch it again to try find something more. It's beautifully shot but I find it flat and I don't engage with it as I have done with other Kubrick films. What makes it special for you?
@Daniel-nh3qr it's the most daring movie he's ever made yet the most relatable .. It raises questions that no one in a relationship, man or woman, dares to ask .. He basically went to Warner bros & said : I want to make a movie that will shake the core of every relationship of every couple thst will watch the movie .. I want them to feel uncomfortable watching it by raising doubt & mistrust & make them question each other .. he basically said : I want to make the worst "date movie" ever .. The fact that Warner agreed to finance such movie is a miracle .. But they got rewarded because it became Kubrick's highest-grossing movie of his entire career
Kubrick added continuity errors on purpose in The Shining, like how the layout of the Overlook Hotel doesn't make sense, like when Danny is riding his Big Wheel in the lobby and suddenly he's on the 3rd floor, or how the carpet pattern changes. The best thing about Kubrick's films especially The Shining is how there is always a new layer to discover every time you re-watch it.
@@Bonn1770 right, i think there were continuity errors like the manager's office with window did not make sense. But things like the color of the typewriter being different show the difference between him being lost in the book vs reality.
I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few directors I love, PTA, Robert Eggers, Michael Winterbottom, Robbie Ryan the cinematographer I’ve worked with. Scorsese would be the one person I’d give anything to meet in my life, I love this man’s mind.
So.enjoyable to hear praise of a contemporary. You can feel the enjoyment. Its magical theycan respect eachothers genius agreeing they dont create in the same way.
Marty, folks can only dream of enjoying even 1/4 of the illustrious career you have, not that you didnt bleed, sweat and cry for it dont get it twisted now ; ) We do need to look upon one tragic flaw of Stan here being that we have lost Shelley this year. I wanna be as kind as possible in wording, but that was a fire he lit the match on. Ive seen the BTS footage, hes brutal on her throughout the shoot. What a gorgeous delicate soul she was for such a cruel cold fate. RIP Shelley Duvall
Kubrick is a great filmmaker but he's not a great story teller. I actually like his films from the 50's more like The Killing and the aforementioned Paths of Glory which is more of a psychological thriller than war movie or at least as much. Towards the end of his career he leaned into the visual, spectacular type of filmmaking. Eye wide shut was just boring really.
Kubrick is half overrated; he was a few films that are masterpieces that next to no other director could touch, but he eventually, when he couldn't recreate that magic, he relying on baiting the worst instincts of neck beards by not making what was happening clear so that youtubers could make hour long videos pontificating about what a movie, that can't even be bothered to be CLEAR and CONCISE, means; I've come to dislike him a little bit because of that. The Shinning and Eyes Wide Shut really aren't that good, and the fact that I have to be ANNOYED by half witted film fanatics who want to explain what they mean makes them even worse. If Kubrick were smarter he would have realized that, that HE needed to put the clear meaning on the screen... not leave it up to some fat dork's conjecture where they 100% of the time are completely lost in the weeds and looking too deep into EVERYTHING, look at ANY interpenetration of either movie, the claims being made by those who analyses them will make you sick. 2001 on the other hand, although enigmatic, has a concrete meaning which can be revealed by reading the book, the strange end of the movie is explained in the book, the movie just abstracts the events. Kubrick seemed to be drunk from the mystique that created and even on making movies that are just filled to the brim with loose ends for you to try to solve.
Only Scorcese can talk fast enough to review five films in depth in 10 minutes.
Tarantino on cocaine begs to differ.
Typical New Yorker/East Coast guy. We move at a little higher BPM.

Except that it was altered after his death.
Marty gets The Shining "it is all in Jack's head"

That will be a hell of note!
I think Eyes Wide Shut is Kubrick's masterpiece. It's completely fascinating.

She will be immortal because of Kubrick’s vision of her on film. Some cruel fate for a “B actress” !
I don’t care for Scorsese’s films. I guess it’s the subject matter. But there is no one I would rather listen to talk about film.
Martin Scorsese on Salo:100 days of sodom
I would actually watch this
i hate that stupid intro sound so much, i always try to avoid this channel because if it 👍
Martin Scorsese on Revenge of the Nerds.

Not really

A lot of artists deal in ambiguity, it doesn't lessen his films one iota in my opinion.
I’m sure Kubrick’s disappointed he didn’t “dumb down”” his movies enough for you.
