"Through the Barricades" by them is a must listen!!
My all-time favourite of theirs, preferred this over True & Gold ❤
My favourite as well, loved it from the start ❤
Yes! Song still gives me shivers
Absolutely. Through the Barricades ! Their most polished single. A real classic that needs to be featured.
For real, it's one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard
If you want a great Spandau Ballet song then "To Cut A Long Story Short" is the one.
I love early Spandau Ballet. To Cut a Long Story Short and Chant Number 1 sounded so different when they came out. I wish they'd gone that route instead of what they ended up doing. Gold and all those songs were very successful, but not quite my cup of tea.
Someone else just mentioned it, but ‘I’ll Fly for You’ is another great one. It’s from the same album as ‘Only When You Leave’
Tony Hadley had one of the best voices of the 80's.
And beyond.
Yes, exceptional range.
If you do not know, Spandau is area of Berlin, Germany. A prison, there kept some of the Nazi officers and elite who were tried for crimes after WW2. When the Nazis were executed by hanging,...the term of "Spandau Ballet" was made, for the hanging men. This band's music, more joyous than the band name.
I didn’t know that!
... name was, also, a backhanded tribute, of sorts, to the legendary:
Joy Division.
@@elizabethfranco1284I'm english ING LIS H.Dodes, I'm saying english Doug's back in the 80s.I saw that prince was getting some people and
I'm modern english state that I was mountain. At harsh's commercial use of some music doing the melt song modern english?I don't die are you
I dunno, unaliving those guys seems pretty joyous, to me.
Jay & Amber, you'll love one of their first hits "Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)" !!!
"Chant No. 1" is upbeat and will have you dancing!!!
great tune
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stands out from all their other songs in my opinion.
Spandau Ballet’s “Be Free With Your Love” and “Lifeline” are top favorites !
LOVE those, add "I'll Fly For You" to that list!
@@alleykeosheyan4779 Yes, that’s another great song !
Spandau Ballet "Barricades" Is in my opinion their best song...Just putting it out there.
Their early work sounds very new wave. Later was more pop
Through the Barricades is the best song they recorded, such empathy
'Through The Barricades ' is one of my favourites.
I agree, they should react to that song next
Such a beautiful song
You really should check out "Through the Barricades" by Spandau Ballet. It's a different vibe from them, but it's epic. Much love from England 🏴
This is my favorite song of theirs. Love, love, love Tony Hadley's voice!
Love Spandau Ballet!
"Chant no 1 (I dont need this pressure on)" and "Instinction" - the former was played on radio stations in the U.S before they realised that the guys were these young lads from London...
Their greatest, most iconic song You've not yet done is Lifeline.
Another similar band from this era, BREATHE, with their Top 2 1988 hit, Hands to Heaven. Also, How Can I Fall, both hits, are 80's gold.
Yes!! I love Breathe, they were one of my favorites in the 80's! I've requested them a few times, I'm glad to see other people requesting them too. Say A Little Prayer is awesome as well.
Depeche Mode live and in concert “never let me down again.” You’ll love it, guaranteed
💯
Depeche Mode is on a whole different level in a good way.
I have aways found that Spandau Ballet - Through the Barricades was different.
Through the barricades should be next!
ooh Spandau is A VIBE! 🤣
Saw them in concert in the 80s ...Tony's voice is identical live, amazing!! Try "Chant, No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)" next, for a different, more fast paced dance vibe from them.
I saw then in 2015. They d8d a small US tour & my city was lucky enough to be on the tours list.
They were AMAZING!
They were so incredibly polished and super "tight" as a band.
I was really impressed.
Tony's voice was impeccable per usual.
Love this, Amber & Jay! Another group making great music at that time was ABC, who you’ve listened to before. I’d recommend listening to their When Smokey Sings, a tribute to Smokey Robinson.
Through the Barricades should be your next Spandau Ballet! Fabulous!
An female led 80s band you haven't reacted to yet is Missing persons - words, walking in l.a., destination unknown. Also another band with a female lead vocalist, Lone justice - shelter, ways to be wicked. Some more Eurythmics would be nice as well - there must be an angel, I need a man, sisters are doing it for themselves (duet with Aretha Franklin), would I lie to you
I was thinking of recommending this group too. Good choice for Female Friday!
I haven't thought about Lone Justice in forever! Makes me think of Indigo Girls.
You need to react to "Round and Round" by Spandau Ballet.
That's a sweet song. I'll Fly for You is another good one.
@@dranet47...... Definitely a good song.
Yes! My favorite Spandau song. Top Ten UK hit but only went to #34 here. Should have been as big as "True."
PAUL YOUNG -" Comeback And Stay (Official Video) and. " OH GIRL " (Official Video) an Amazing Cover Version Originally by The Chi Lites. 2 Incredible 80s RADI🔘 📻 Classics from Awesome Funky 80s Bass & Drums to Phenomenal Guitar play .
" I'll Fly for You" Is my favorite from Spandau Ballet.
Yes, my vote. Through the barricades is a bit slow. I'll Fly For You makes you want to sing along.
@@somersetfan1 I do when I'm alone in the truck, or at home.
Tony is fantastic singer. One of the best.
Jay got my dander up, when he compared Tony Hadley to Huey Lewis! 🙄🤦🏾♂️
@@LibraKing3121 lol
Chant No. 1 next - very unique and funky sound!
80's SophistiPop! Spandau Ballet, Style Council, Blow Monkeys, Sewing Out Sister, Level 42, Anything But The Girl, Curiosity Killed the Cat, ABC - all have elements of Jazz.
Love this tune! Spandau is indeed a vibe. Band members, the Kemp twins, Gary and Martin, were also in a cool gangster movie, "The Krays". You guys should check it out.
Amber, just an FYI, their sax player is Steve Norman. Loved Spandau back in the day; second only to Duran Duran. 😁
They are part of the "New Romantic" bands along with Duran Duran, ABC, Human League, Japan...etc....
Great band miss them great harmony True My Favorite song and Gold
Spandau Ballet "How Many Lies" is a great ballad song by them that I think you both would like.
So good. Absolute banger! Alot of great tunes from Spandau Ballet. Round and Round is great too! Mega vocals from Tony!
For me this was the best of Spandau Ballet, even with a rocky riff! Fantastic.
Thank you!! 🙂
I used to love when this came on the radio back when. I also should suggest the 80s group Breathe and their song "How Can I Fall."
Yes!! Both of their hits "How Can I Fall" and "Hands to Heaven" are excellent songs.
For years I only knew True and Gold. Then I got their greatest hits album and heard Only When You Leave. It is now my favorite Spandau Ballet song. Lifeline and Paint me Down are also good.
"Communication" is awesome!
If you like this sound you should try a couple of songs from the band BREATHE. You'll like HANDS TO HEAVEN and HOW CAN I FALL. The were a band in the 80s with a similar sound.
Love the 1980s.
Love the BeeGees.
You would love their 80s hit “You Win Again”!!!!
My favorite by Spandau Ballet is one of their earlier tunes, "To Cut a Long Story Short." A different sound than their later stuff. It's also a bit embarrassing to see the way they dressed, but it's a good reminder that New Wave wasn't just about the music but the fashion as well.
Another Scottish band with a similar sound to early SB is Altered Images (Female Friday) - check out "Don't Talk To Me About Love."
yes i would love them to do an early tune wharn they were new romantics.
fab ff request!
My favorite of Spandau Ballets is"True" ♥️✌️😎
Songs - Through the Barricade and Chant Number 1... (2 totally different vibes)
Fun fact 1 Gary Kemp (guitar with brother Martin here) was in The Bodyguard playing Whitney's Manager.
2. Martin Kemp married Shirley (George Michael's blonde backing singer in Wham) and they're still together to this day ❤
My all time favorite band of the eighties. Please next one Through the barricades! You will love it. Tony Hadley still sings his heart out.
You need to check out "To Cut A Long Story Short" and "Highly Strung" by Spandau Ballet!!!!
Agree, and add "I'll Fly For You" to that list!
As a huge Spandau Ballet fan (I eventually got everything they put out), this single was the first thing I had of theirs. Got the Singles Collection CD after that and went "Wow! I need to listen to more!!!" Tony's pipes are the best! He still sings wonderfully on his new solo stuff.
One of my absolute Favorites from them!! I love the Look and Feel of 80s Videos!
Arguably, their best track, IMO. Tony Hadley is still a real good singer even now, in his 60s. Spandau went through several phases. Their first album, Journeys to Glory, was a brilliant quasi-new wave album, then they became full-on New Romantics.
"Chant No 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On)" and "To Cut A Long Story Short" are bangers
For classy, sophisticated rock, Roxy Music! In particular the album Avalon.
In this same vein, you guys have to hear Breathe! One of my favorite 80's bands, they had some huge hits. Hands To Heaven is a good one to start with, complete with upright bass and beautiful sax interludes. The lead singer's vocals are rich and sincere and gorgeous. Or if you want something upbeat listen to Say A Little Prayer. You're going to love them, I promise!
What a class act this band, amazing! And that voice! 😍
Such a great song! They were a great band back in the '80's. Wishing you both well and sending peace
To Cut A Long Story Short and Muscle Bound are two of my favourites.
Glad you got to listen to this song, it's one of my favorites. Spandau Ballet only had 3 Top 40 hits in the US and you've heard all of them now. However, they were HUGE in the UK and many more hits in their home country. This song is from their 1984 album and I'd recommend the tracks "I"ll Fly For You " and "Highly Strung"
Great choice yet again. "Communication", "Lifeline," "I'l Fly For You," and "Round And Round" are highly recommended.
Yes!🎶✌️🎶
I agree!!!
YASSSS!
I agree, love all 4 songs❤
I’ll fly for you ❤
How bloody wonderful, I haven't heard this song in about 30 years....thanks guys!
But, ypu haven't scratched the surface of this amazing band.
Try their classics like "I'll fly for you", "Lifeline", "Chant No.1", "Instinction", and the amazing "Throuh the barricades".
But the boys split and went their own way in 1990, before reforming in 2009, and they released two fantastic songs "This is the love" and "Steal"....before their final split.
The lead singer, Tony Hadley has always been an amazing singer, but, he has got better as he's got older.
one of my fave tracks of theirs !!
I love Spandau Ballet! This song is brilliant. You must do “Chant No. 1” and “I’ll Fly For You”. Keep up the good work, guys!
😃😃😃 One of my most favorite 80s bands. Love them! I wanted to marry Gary Kemp when I was a kid.
I love the sensuality combined with funk, and great style. Used to listen to this album straight through. Sets a great mood.
Kings of soulful sophisticated pop music. they were just so damn classy & stylish. Tonys voice is just one of many many great 80s vocalists. I dont know whats happened to all teh great singers.
Spandau Ballet were one of rhe pioneer bands of the New Romantics era, having been a resident band at The Blitz Club where New Romanticism was founded (heavily influenced by Punk and New Wave) by Steve Strange and Rusty Eagan. You can hear the New Romantic sound in their earlier songs like 'To Cut a Long Story Short', 'Musclebound' and 'Chant No. 1'. My favourites of their's are 'Instinction' and 'Fly For You'.
So smooth, another Spandau fave for me. My older sister had their albums and the twelve inch mixes and this brings back so many memories.
Great tune. Have not heard it in some time. Thanks!
I love this song. 💎 Thanks, Jay! Thanks, Amber! 🔸 The two Kemp brothers from *Spandau* *Ballet* played real-life twin mobsters in THE KRAYS (1990) movie; check it out, it's so good.
Such a smooth and effortlessly stylish group. Have to second the recommendations for "Lifeline", "Through The Barricades" and "To Cut A Long Story Short" too. Every one a classic '80s hit!
Good song good reaction
This is a vibe for sure. Quite fun.
I bought this new when it came out, Such good driving music then and forever now i am 56 it still sounds better than most today.
There was a great anecdote, mentioned by Tony Hadley, when he was interviewed on BBC Radio 1 (back in the 1970s & 80s, the most listened to national radio station, in the UK).
It went along the lines of the band being booked to play the Royal Albert Hall in London (look it up... the pictures of the venue, indicate the type of show the hall normally puts on)...
... booked not because the venue wanted a New Wave rock & pop band; but because the venue & agents didn't know of the band, and thought they were an actual ballet company.
No idea if Tony was being serious, joking around or trying to take the interviewer (and the audience) for a ride...
... an amusing anecdote, never the less 😆
Sos ad that Tony & Gary hate each other now.
Can't even be in the same room, I've heard.😢
A reunion tour is never going to happen apparently. 😫😭
I used to play cricket in my local park with Tony & his brother Steve & some friends back in the late 70s , good memories. ❤️🇬🇧
Undoubtedly gor me Spandaus best song and a classic 80,s gem up-tempo 80,s at its best!
Their 1st Album will always be the best. To Cut a Long Story Short and The Freeze are excellent. Musclebound is quite groovy, too.
My favourite by SB is “Lifeline”.
Seen Tony Hadley live a few times - the man can really sing!!!
Haven’t heard this in a long time. Thanks for the reintroduction!!
This is actually one of my fav Spandau songs. Went to see them in concert in the 80's, think it was Hammersmith Odeon in London. So great as the voices were as good live. You probably know already but the two guys on guitar are brothers. I have a couple of albums on vinyl still - will dig them out again!!
Fun facts: The lead guitarist of Spandau Ballet and composer of those hit songs also of "Only when you leave" Gary Kemp is now playing with the original drummer of Pink Floyd Nick Mason, playing real old Pink Floyd stuff. And Kemp is also a movie actor. His biggest role was in "The Bodyguard" (1992) along with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, he was playing her manager in that awesome movie !
He & his brother Martin were amazing in the movie "The Krays" biopic about England's most notorious mobsters.
Loved them back then & now. Lead singer Tony Hadley and the Kemp brothers (guitar, bass & backing vocals) were the core doing the writing and arranging. We used to call them & ABC the New Wave Rat Pack for the slick suits, music with jazz, R&B and new wave sounds. Both bands had stellar vocalists, unique sounds (horns Amber) and great videos. I would highly recommend ABC’s When Smokey Sings, Poison Arrow and Millionaire. Also I noticed someone recommended a great female led 80’s band, Berlin. Their lead singer Terri Nunn was a powerhouse. For their full 80’s glory you’d love No More Words & Metro. They changed it up a bit with their Oscar winning smash hit theme song from the original Top Gun film, Take My Breath Away.
Such 80s vibes, take me back to those fantastic carefree days ❤
Sends me right back to my 20's in California...Thanks for the memories!
80's was my era for music, this is the one spandau ballet song I always enjoy listening back to. yes, gold and others were good, but this is probably my favourite. I'll give kudos to the other comment below on to cut a long story short though, forgotten about that one!
If you like these guys, please look into doing the band "Breathe". Start with "How Can I Fall" and "Hands to Heaven". Another great 80's band!
Yes!! I love Breathe!
I love these guys, such a great singer. Spandua Ballet are so good with instruments also!👍👏👏👏♥️♥️
One of my fav Spandau tracks
Loved this, maybe Highly Strung next❤
Gary Kemp the songwriter and lead guitarist also has had a few acting roles.
He played the part of Whitney Houstons characters PR manager in the Bodyguard movie and has several other acting roles credited to him, along with his brother Martin who plays bass guitar in the band.
I love them and this song! Thank you for reacting to this one. Also check out "Round and Round." :)
"Through The Barricades" is their finest IMO. I'll Fly For You & Round & Round are also
great songs!
This is my favorite song of theirs.
They were my obsession in the 80’s.
Great reaction, definitely echo the recommendations for Through the Barricades' , great song by Spandau
That one gives me a lump in my throat and brings a tear to my eye every time.
Haven't heard this song in almost 40 years. Yet somehow I remembered most of the lyrics and the arrangement. Most 80's aongs I'd just soon as forget. Not this one.
I love this band--many hits.
I’ll Fly for You, which was the next release, always thought it was such a beautiful sounding song.
Spandau, to an extent, were another Roxy Music influenced band. Hadley's suits, the sax player and the stylish vibe were taken from mid to late Roxy.
This is one of the very few bands.Me and my father both absolutely adore. I was about ten around this time and started to Take more interesting music.
You should listen to their 1st ever hit " to cut a long story short" .
My personal favourite is " through the barricades".
