One of my favorite songs of all time. It says "if you leave" yet it feels like she's always left. It has a strong nostalgia vibe to it. Like he's lamenting cause it's hopeless.

This is their pop hit. If you go back to their earlier albums like Architecture and Morality you might not think it was the same band . Extremely experimental electronic band in their early days.

You guys need to dive into more on f OMD. Check out Joann of Arc, Electricity, Maid of Orleans. Their album Architecture and Morality is still a seminal point in music. Made under the Factory Records umbrella, it was one of many culture defining albums to come out of that independent music label.
Architecture and Morality was with Virgin, not Factory. They still had Peter Saville doing their artwork though.
I think just the single "Electricity" wad first released on Factory but a Virgin subsidiary published the next few OMD releases.
They should react to Souvenir though.

Hey, Americans: OMD have a whooole other legacy beyond "If You Leave". Their recordings from 1978 through 1983/4 were categorised as "experimental" music in Europe and were highly influential on artists like Depeche Mode, Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Moby, Paul van Dyk, the Killers and a zillion others. Truly one of the great, seminal electronic acts in history!

This song came out when a girlfriend & I went our separate ways and that line about "7 years" hit hard because it had been 7 years for us.
Time does heal all wounds. Now when I hear this song, it is with happiness because it brings back memories of the nice times we had together rather than the split.

This was one of two songs that we chose for our class of 1986 song. The movie Pretty in Pink was just released in the Spring right before graduation and we chose this to be our song along with That's What Friends are For by Dionne Warwick and friends.
This was (sort of) used as a "Love Theme" in John hughes "Sixteen Candles".

OMD, New Order, Section 25,... All great bands with that UK Synth vibe, between pop and new wave
All amazing bands. With one thing in common. All were on the legendary Manchester label Factory Records at one point. Especially New Order (Joy Division), since they were the Kings of Tony Wilson's iconic label, and the whole HACIENDA (Madchester) scene and movement they helped create. OMD only had the "Electricity" single on Factory in 1979. But IMO that's their best output and I enjoy OMD.
@@transmit13 "Electricity" (backed by "Almost") was a massive record, not in terms of chart placement but influence. So many artists have cited it as a pivotal moment in their musical trajectory.
They have several real catchy tunes. Definitely check out "Enola Gay", The Hillbilly Moon Explosion also do a cool version of it.

This song is at the end of the movie, I think. Pretty in Pink is, girl from one group in high school that's sort of from the wrong side of town, likes rich boy in the popular crowd and he likes her, but both face pressures from their peer groups about how unrealistic they are being to want to go together. Do they end up together at the end of the movie? Go watch it! It's a sweet flick. There's an antagonist you want to punch in the nose in the popular group, I swear I wanna beat his you know....all that fun dramatic stuff you remember from high school in the 80's! I love Jon Cryer in this, too. I gotta watch it again now that you brought this song up!! My school had these elements in the early 80's. What a trip. I wish life was that simple now, geez!
OMD were a great early 80’s synth band… as mentioned ‘enola gay’ and ‘electricity’ probably greater… but for me ‘genetic engineering’ was immense! The use of different instruments as well as what sounds like a typewriter in percussion… a great forgotten song
I was a teenager in the 80's and watched MTV a lot but there are some videos I somehow never saw.

The song is actually about unrequited love, it's as simple as that. He's in love with her, but she's in love with someone else. And while she is part of his everyday life, graduation approaches, he fears he will never see her again to let her know. In reality, she knows, but doesn't share his feelings.

OMD is an interesting band. They had some of the biggest hits of the 80’s. Very few people have ever heard the name of the band, but almost everyone has heard ay least a couple of their songs. (A lot of them were used in movies)
Yeah, this is one of my least favorite songs from them.
By the time this came out they were becoming more commercial and less interesting.
Souvenir, Electricity and Enola Gay are my earliest rememberances of them.
They're well-regarded in Europe. Shame they're only a cult concern in the US.

These guys are still touring today, and still sound great. Not too many musical artists are around this long, let alone traveling and touring like OMD is. Even Psychedelic Furs are touring right now, with Duran Duran coming soon.

Even though it's performed by adult men, the song written in one evening as a last-minute replacement song for the prom scene in "Pretty in Pink", is about a doomed adolescent romance. In the movie, Blaine, a boy from a rich family, asks out a pretty-but-eccentric girl, Andie, from the poor side of town. She feels out of place going to parties with his stuck-up friends, and Blaine can't seem to choose between his friends and his new girlfriend. Ultimately, he ends up breaking her heart. Andie ends up going to prom with her platonic male friend, Ducky, who has always been in love with Andie, and Blaine shows up stag. Andie and Blaine make up at the dance, and they kiss to this song. The movie is super melodramatic, but it was super popular with teens, including myself, though I was only in the sixth grade when it came out.

The song is basically talking about if you leave to give him another night as in another chance but she doesn’t give him another chance then leave and don’t look back even though she says someday we will be friends again. He fears he will never see her again.
It seems to me that the singer is saying that he would do anything to keep her, he will accept that she wants to leave BUT if she does he will no longer be there for her to come too as it is too painful for him to wait for her.
