In light of how popular this video has become recently I wanted to pin this comment here to clear some things up.
This video was filmed Feb 2020. The accounts of Mansons abuse had not come to light and neither of us were aware. That section was heavily edited down due to time constraints (this original video was an hour and a half long) but my statement about him being anti violence came from his history of denouncing US war efforts and being pro gun control. Lynn also disagreed with me and my anti violence statement which I agree was poor wording.
Obviously it is now 2021 and many things have come forward since. We wholeheartedly stand with and believe the victims of his abuse. We cannot imagine the depth of what they've endured. We do not and never will support him again. Our hearts go out to everyone affected by his abhorrent behaviour and hope they get justice - Conor

I'm not sure how or why this video appeared in my recommended feed. I'm not subscribed to any Goth channels, I haven't searched for anything Goth-related, etc.
But for some reason, here it is...
I was Goth before Goth was Goth. I'm male, and now 53, was born in the late 60's and made 18 years old in 1986. I was a Cure fan when they were a new band. I use to dress all in black because I liked the link between the dark side, mysteriousness and of course, Vampires. I'm in New Orleans and live just a few blocks away from Ms Anne Rice and Lestat. New Orleans is also famous for being the home of Voodoo Priestess Marie Laveau. I was also infatuated with death, cemeteries, halloween, skulls, etc. I also played electric guitar and grew my hair long (80's hair bands). I dyed my hair jet black to be more like the members of KISS and because of my infatuation with darkness, mystery and vampires. I bought the Satanic Bible and read a few chapters and tossed it aside. It wasn't what I thought it was. It wasn't about Satan/devil or anything like that. It was about self-indulgence and gluttony - something uninteresting to me. I had my left ear pierced twice, my right ear once and my left eyebrow pierced. Most males back then only wore one piercing in their left ear because both ears pierced or just the right ear pierced meant you were 'gay'. Right... Being 'politically correct' was not a thing back then either. Being a dark person and stage guitarist (I had to wear eyeliner on stage), the eyeliner kinda followed me off stage. Some girls said it brought out my blue eyes. I also used to file my fingernails to a point. If I made them too pointy and they got too long, they would start to curl under. Anyway, imagine seeing me back in 1983 when I was 15 years old in black Z Cavaricci's, a long sleeve black button up shirt, a bolo tie with spike tips and a skull medallion, pointed fingernails with black nail polish, long jet (blue/black) black hair with black eyeliner on and long dangling earrings of a good angel hanging from my left ear and a bad angel hanging from my right ear. A black leather necklace with a gargoyle on it to stand by and protect my heart. I was this in 1983 until about 1995. I only had to change my appearance because society wasn't as acceptable then. I got married and became a father. A decent paying job wouldn't hire me like that. Y'all don't realize how good and easy y'all have it now. Back then you couldn't be you. You had to be what society wanted you to be - or you wouldn't be considered part of society. You would be considered antisocial and an outcast. Your family would starve just because of the way you looked. Anyway, I was Goth before Goth was Goth. I guess just call me the GothFather. LoL

Goth in the 90s, early 2000s was not only an esthetic. It was a statement. Usually, a goth would be sad and disenchanted about society, but they would be the sweetest, funniest, most empathetic people you could find. To me, goth were sad in the background, in their corner, and if you reached them out, they were super friendly. While emos where sad publically and stating their grievance on social media. (Anyways, that's how I viewed emos as a goth.)

From what Ive noticed with Anthony’s “I spent a day with.....” series is unless specifically stated he tries to bring on the more average pick of the subculture or topic hes interviewing instead of just bringing on big names. His casting process is he’ll post on his social media what he’s looking for and have people send in videos answering a couple basic questions that go along with what he plans on asking. This video was also still early on in the series and I feel he has improved quite a bit as an interviewer

For me, as an outsider to the Goth community, the big ***** goth girlfriend meme is very similar to the manic pixie dream girl trope in movies. I'm into gaming and a lot of my male friends make jokes about just wanting the sexy goth girlfriend and that is what it kind of comes down to for me, the sexualization of women based on the category of their aesthetic. Like you pointed out, boys would assume that you were sexual or kinky based on your clothing choices, when one has nothing to do with the other.

Yep I was a metalhead never a goth but no angst or anything towards them. They think (my observation from their comments over several videos) they believe everyone hates them or has something against them but fact is I don’t believe that the case. I suspect that’s more self image than anything else and who doesn’t struggle with self image at some point in life? They’ll outgrow it if they start meeting people who don’t indulge in their choice of fashion styles and see we’re really all looking for the same things. We all wanna find our tribes, where we fit in. Crazy world and technology has killed personal interactions and that makes all of us less sharp on our social skills and that makes us all less confident in new social situations. Goths aren’t an exception to this general rule, or rule of thumb, though in every possible demographic there will be people who are seemingly impervious to this social pressure and phobias most of us are not so immune.

50 year old retired "Goth" here. Still loving the music, (as well as the synth pop, industrial, ebm, dark wave yadda yadda yadda) Bands like Siouxsie, the cure, bauhaus, joy division, pink dots, sisters of mercy often refused to label themselves as Goth bands. I loved/love their sound and words and sure their lyrics were dark, and brooding, and the music was atmospheric, but the UK in the late seventies/eighties wasn't exactly a joyous place to be. Most young educated people were unemployed and couldn't find work, pissed off with the status quo and Thatcherism. Their intelligence and music reflected it, and I think their sounds and words struck a chord for many of us teenagers across the pond who were living under the constant fear of Nuclear Winter, (So why bother doing anything, we're all gonna die soon anyway). We latched on because we could relate, or at least we felt they could relate to us, like they were putting our thoughts opinions, ideas, and emotions into music and returning it to us.
I think the first band that I listened to that classified itself as "gothic rock" was Christian Death. I believe Rozz Williams was the catalyst to focus on religious imagery, as well as the "satanism" aspect. Which just added a little more flavor, color, (pun intended) and mystery, of the newborn culture that had begun confusing and terrifying our parents already.
Anyway, At 50, I no longer wear the clothing, the makeup, or the jewelry, And while I may look like a middle aged gay man, I am going to throw on Sopor Aeternus or ISC, or Heilung, or Coil, or Deutsch Nepal, or Brighter death now, etc... well before I would ever even consider actively or willingly pressing play on a single top 40 pop band that already saturates the music industry.
Point being, at the end of the day/night its what's in your heart not necessarily what clothes you wear! Cheers

They think being goth means only dressing the fashion, when in reality in encompasses so much more than that. I also don't dress the fashion daily, and I certainly don't wear the heavy makeup (don't like the feeling of it) but I am 100% goth anyway, as I enjoy the lifestyle, the music, the art, the literature, and everything in between. "UK in the late seventies/eighties wasn't exactly a joyous place to be". So true, and I'm so glad you wrote that, because a lot of people's view of that period is rose-tinted, simply because so much good music came out of it. But frequently the music was an expression of frustration, anger and despair.
As you say: unemployment, threat of imminent nuclear annihilation, industrial unrest, shortages of power, uncollected rubbish piling up in the streets, awful housing, police brutality and corruption, IRA terrorist bombs, and in some cities everything seemed either to be derelict or being made actively dystopian and hideous with concrete brutalist monstrosities. Oh, and race riots, NF thuggery and P*ki-bashing, sus law and a mad war with Argentina, to add to the general irreversible decline, end-of-times feeling.
People either have forgotten about it (because they were too young to appreciate the sheer nastiness going on around them or, like me, they were too wrapped up in just living) or never knew it (because they hadn't been born yet). But that was the context from which punk, 2Tone*, goth and post-punk emerged. * The Selecter and The Specials (eg Ghost Town) expressed the zeitgeist particularly well, albeit in an upbeat way. That "we're all gonna die soon anyway" feeling meant you were dancing on the edge of a precipice, which added a certain thrill factor...
No pleasure without pain, they say...

I feel like goth culture to me is more about a sort of ambivalence to both the dark and the light. I feel like even though it is a musical sub-culture, and you can’t be goth without liking the music, but it has its roots in gothic artists and poets like Edgar Allen Poe. I feel like while it isn’t really an “emotional group,” it is about finding the good in things society would deem hedonistic like death and undesirable like sadness. I think the price of dressing goth is determined also by location and also size. I generally cannot thrift anything that fits my style. Op shops here are full of grandma clothes, black in general is hard to come by where I am. Places like H&M are hard to come by here and are actually rather expensive too. And I’m also a fat person, so cheap stores that may sell things that fit my style they don’t stock my size. Even charity shops often don’t stock my size in regular clothing a lot of the time. It’s hard out here 😂

    • @BlackCroft666
      @BlackCroft666 Рік тому

For health reasons you should try to get to a healthy weight first and find a way to maintain that before worrying about goth clothes. You can be goth till 50s or a goth till 80s depending on the lifestyle. And honestly some clothes just look not good if you are "too big" or "too thin".
Also clothes don't last that long if you are bigger which also means not many will end up in charity shops.
A big plus in losing weight is that you can always buy something in a bigger size if the article is not in your actual size (which happens also a lot where I live). Baggy style is luckily a thing.

This gets better as they get older. For now jeans are just easier to deal with and band shirts hold up well to all the washing. I know some goth parents who still do the full face and all black, my hats are off to them but it isn't something I want to spend the time on when I'm just kicking around the house or going to the grocery store lol. Time is a really hard to come by thing and if I have to pick painting my face or trying to avoid being loved on by the kids over having time to relax and read a book or work on my art 🤷 for me it's an easy choice, I have my kids older years and the literal entire rest of my life to dress exactly how I want so it doesn't bother me. Do I miss looking like my favorite version of myself? Oh yeah lol sometimes I do! But for me the trade off is worth it, I sacrifice something I want for something I want more for a truthfully short window of time and then go back to fully dressing how I like. The kids are worth it for me and the time spent working on my art is worth it for me, waking up at the butt crack of dawn to do hair and make-up that makes it unpleasant to be around my children just isn't. We all do this parenting thing differently and as long as you are taking good care of them, and remembering to take of yourself too 🤷 the rest will all take care of itself. Just don't rush into kids, take some time to learn who you are as a person first, travel some, experience the world without the commitments of a family weighing on you first. I wish I had done that, kids are a blessing don't get me wrong, but take some time for YOU first, being a mother is a heavy responsibility that takes a lot of time. Waiting until you're stable and emotionally ready to really settle down will be one of the best things you can do for your children, when you aren't quite ready for it and it happens the children are the ones who suffer for it. Before you have children it seems like there is the massive rush to have them...and there isn't... truly there is no rush. Let life settle and be stable so you can provide them with the mother they need and the life they need, pay very close attention to red flags when you're dating someone too so you can pick the best co-parenting partner too. I loved lots of men who were fun partners but would have made absolutely terrible parents! I sound about a thousand years old and like a broken record but 🤷, you have a pretty short time left to be you in a purely selfish way, don't shortchange yourself.

I was a punk when goth started. They were just punks with a different fashion sense. Same with emo. I watched goth and punk slowly move away from each other and then emo and goth move away from each other. Over time they have become there own thing but for the most part they still have some of that old punk core. I have always been a bit of a goth even back before goth was a thing. I think the only reason I didn't go with the goth look is because it was too much like work for me with all of the makeup and stuff. I started in the punk scene in Los Angeles when I was 13 or 14 then my parents moved back to Chattanooga TN when I was 16. I was here when the punk scene started and it was a lot different than LA less violent and more inclusive. It was were anyone that didn't fit anywhere else could come a fill like they belonged. I am a Christian, an old man(54), a punk, a weirdo, and a bit of a goth. I'm not sure why I felt like I needed to say all of this but I did.

Totally agree with your point about fashion and cost : People can either be fashion victims and pay ridiculously expensive branded clothing or you can search the charity and antique shops for great finds and just use your imagination. I suppose the irony is that the people paying huge amounts of money for branded clothing are kind of the exact opposite of what goth is all about: being an individual and not caving into the mainstream narrative.

I entered the Goth Scene in 1982 at 15 yrs old, I had a black pair of Levi's 501 jeans (My Mom dyed them for me) a grey-ish green t-shirt, a beat up pair of second hand Doc Marten's boots and my black leather motorcycle jacket. I put a few pins on my jacket like Siouxsie Sioux and "Disco Sucks" etc. I wanted to paint the back of my jacket with the Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi is Dead" album cover, but my Father told me that if I did so I would be repaying him for the coat, money I didn't have. Times were tough through High School in a middle of Alberta Canada prairie town. I was big enough that I rarely got picked on, that and I couldn't afford the make-up at the time but it was never tough to be a Goth, it just took being creative. I love the fashions Goth's have now and wish I could have found ready made gear when I was at University where there was a small Goth population. Through the years it wasn't appropriate to wear Goth fashion at my place of employ, and now in my mid 50's I have a few Goth Fashions I have acquired that I find very comfortable for lounging and listening to the stereo, perhaps enjoying an Absinth (I love licorice flavoured booze of all kinds) or a Scotch or perhaps even open a nice Pinot Noir for the night. I lost my lower right leg a few years ago and have a prosthetic which provides me with the ability to use a cane, which is my most trusted accessory. Anyway my main point, you don't need to spend thousands for a Goth outfit, second hand and thrift stores are your friend, ask family if they have something you think is unique and borrow it (My buddies and I used to exchange jackets, or amulets etc. all the time. If I'm honest I may still have a really cool black and white herringbone long winter coat that belongs to a friend in my closet. It's been almost 30 years and he hasn't said anything, should I say something,...I still wear it a few times a year! lol

Then ya'll referred to Penneys as being called Primark in United States, and I was like, "what? Penneys is still Penneys where I live." (That's what most people call JCPenney.) So I looked up Primark, and it's a totally different store than JCPenney, and only called Primark here because where ya'll are, Primark is called Penneys, and I guess there can't exist both a Penneys and JCPenney in United States. Anyways, so while locating Primark, there are only a handful of locations in the northeast and one in Florida. If I see one in my travels, I'll definitely stop in and look, but there ain't any convenient locations where I live ha.
