Example a couple years ago an elder goth picked on Black Friday and toxic tears. It’s really not that deep, it’s just some.
I am 47 and have literally lived through all these styles of goth. I favoured trad goth and Victorian goth. Now married with kids I only wear black, but would be classed as a casual goth as it’s more practical for my lifestyle.
Me too. I’m a carer so I tone it down a bit. I don’t wear my makeup out of nessesity more than anything (elderly people like their houses hot!) and ide just sweat it off! But I still dress like a witch and I won’t compromise on that
The argument about “too easy to find” for Nu Goth is stupid because corporate goth stuff is easy to find. It’s just work clothes, but black. But they don’t complain about that. I don’t think they hate the style, I think they’re a) jealous because it wasn’t available when they were younger and b) more annoyed at mass consumerism rather than the fashion itself. I empathise a little because I myself don’t personally like the “mass produced” look or feel of the style but that’s just on myself - for other people I think go for it. Plus, you can still diy your clothes and make them look Nu Goth. At the end of the day, we live in a modern, highly accessible, materialist/consumerist world now and it’s never gonna be like “the good old days”. Things change. Things evolve. You don’t have to take it THAT seriously.
Exactly! It's the 21st century, it's not the 1980s anymore. Things chance, things evolve. The only point I agree with is disliking mass consumerism and fast fashion and its negative impact on the environment etc. That I am 100% on board with. But don't use that as an excuse to hide behind to hate on somebody's fashion or lifestyle
Hi. Thanks for doing this reaction video to my project. I really enjoyed it! You are some of my favourite UA-camrs and I appreciated your thoughtful commentary. Since it seemed to perplex you alot, here's my motivation for including both Batcave and Trad Goth: Batcave was first, before Goth was a codified thing. It was totally DIY, a reaction to 70s hippie and mod styles, and influenced by Rocky Horror, drag, glam/Bowie, German expressionism and art, and S&M cultures, it was still a holdover from the decadent 70s and it's uniquely "club" fashion. Only the brave wore this look out on the street during the day. When I look at early photos of Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, and the kids who hung out at the Batcave in the early 1980s, I see a distinct style from looking at photos of Trad Goths from 1985-1990 who were influenced by Siouxsie, the Cure, etc. Those looks - with the thrifted trenchcoats and dress shirts, jeans, are not so sexual, and it's when you start to see actual gothic clothing designs being manufactured, and with more younger people wearing it, it evolves to be fashion that isn't just "club" fashion. I suppose our Batcave look in this video could have been more wild to make it stand out from Trad, but I believe it's also completely legit to what many people would have worn around 1982 when going to that club. As for Hippie Goth, here in North America, "tribal goth" or "goth fusion" is a thing, separate from Pagan Goth or Viking Goth or other more European styles. But those terms have gone out of fashion and more people have pointed out the Othering/Racist tones of those words, so when I asked people in those scenes they suggested calling it Hippie Goth .Happy to hear from more people about that, who know more than me. Completely understand where you're coming from now with the trad and batcave separation, viewing it as the style before the goth label even emerged. I think in more recent years the terminology has just become interchangeable in the general lexicon but I do agree that there's a big distinction when viewing it as the roots of the style. The hippie goth one was just extra perplexing because hippie has a different connotation here and is generally hurled at anyone alternative here as an insult. The other word I was looking for in the video was "medieval" gothic. But I did say that I'm sure the person has their reasons for the naming convention and what it means to them and seeing as it's something we're unfamiliar with I wouldn't know. I'd like to deeply apologise for most likely butchering the pronunciation of your name! So the "vampire goth" is my friend Rauncie the vampire queen of Rochester New York and her wings are from my friend Dutchess of Eternally Thirsty on etsy also from New York. I linked them up because I had a pair of wings and brought them with me to a show and she wanted a pair for herself. Rauncie does tarot readings and hosts a vampire ball yearly in Rochester. I saw her face in the Screencap of this and had to watch it. 🖤❤🦇❤🖤
I agree with him on the trad goth and batcave thing. Especially since back in their day they didn't view those fashions with those names, its just todays labels for what they didn't even really have a name for at first
Yeah, I don't recall any of us differentiating or naming our style anything. We were just dressing like musicians we admired and putting our individual creative spins on our outfits, makeup and hair. I will say, though, that the changes throughout the decades is noticeable.
Regarding the nu goth thing, I agree with your analysis that it's sort of the "new mall goth" - never thought of it that way until you said it but it's pretty spot on now that I think about it! In the 2000's people criticized mall goth for being a goth-in-a-box kit too far removed from the original subculture, and isn't that exactly what nu goth is seen as too? Mall goth was people buying a whole outfit from Hot Topic or whatever, nu goth is people buying a whole outfit from Killstar I guess. Different styles, same critiques. Nu goth is the mall goth of the 2010's in that regard. Interesting point, I think you really hit the nail on the head!
To add to the "NU Goth" conversation and how it's "too easy", some people like myself absolutely SUCK at sewing, distressing etc. I just don't get the argument. 🤷🏻♂️
Some people will find anything to complain about honestly! It's the 21st century, the Internet exists, its not the 80s anymore so they need to just accept the times we live in. I myself am similar and find sewing etc time consuming and difficult so I very much appreciate the modern convenience 💀
I think people forget that og goths also incorporated accessible/"trendy" items into their wardrobe from their own time period as well. The average goth teen wasn't spending hours and hours and hundreds of dollars on their wardrobe, they just wore what they liked until it wore out and then wore it out even more for fashion purposes. There were plenty of people who did tons of creative things with their wardrobe, but there were also plenty who just wore whatever they felt like that day and whatever they could afford from their local mall or thrift store.
Hippie Goth is the last thing I would have called the Pagan/ Druid Gothic look. It could have also been called Medieval Goth...or maybe Renaissance Goth. Definitely not Hippie. However, I understand labeling Gothic styles can be very difficult. Thank you Lynn for pointing out Victorian goths are the original goths. I completely agree.

I'd think hippie goth was more like psy/trance goth, from a fashion perspective; natural materials, tie dye, etc. Yeah, that once definitely seemed more of a pagan/fantasy thing.
You also have the "everything that was old is new again". Children and grandchildren finding culture and clothing treasures in closets and second hand shops would definitely be another variable in the discussion.
I have donated some goth clothing to baby bats but they can pry my Blackened Angels red velvet opera overdress from my cold dead hands! I can’t fit in it anymore, maybe some day when I drop Covid weight.
Hi. I started Goth in a little tiny town in USA at the age of five in the 80's. My role models were Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Ursa from Superman 2, and She-Ra.
Can we discuss the makeup matching not only each other but the current background? I am digging the purple and black feel. It inspires me to do my own makeup. Not that I ever go out, because as you said - it is too dang hot.
I agree sub-styles, unless totally opposite… are completely useless. Like a great example is “ romantic goth” and “ vampire goth” are basically very similar. As is Victorian goth. 1980s goth was more like punk/goth simple but still looked cool. But one sub-style after another is too much and it ends up confusing people if anything.
I'm unsure whether I edited it out but I did make a point that "romantic" "vampire" and "victorian" goth are all very similar to me and in my head are shared under the same substyle umbrella. I also understand the need to distinguish though. So it's a difficult topic to tackle. However when things start getting new names every week for very very slight differences I agree it ends up doing more harm than good. Less separation, more celebrating of shared interests, we're all goths at the end of the day at least! 💀
@@RandomGothCouple It's also important to note that these labels were applied long after the style emerged. Originally it wasn't a "movement", it was just personal expression. And surely for a culture like goth, personal expression is essential.
I love that gothic clothing is so much more accessible these days. I feel blessed to have known camden in london when it was at it's best. That was when i was a teen and it was like going to a candy store 🤣 i diy fishnets and tops but I'm not gonna say no to making my life a little easier now that I'm almost 29 with 2 kids in tow
The first time we went to Camden was amazing! It's a shame it's not like it once was! And completely agree on the accessibility. Sometimes you're just too busy to hand sew and stud a jacket so the convenience is just nice. At the end of the day your clothes are FOR YOU. Not anyone else, so screw what they think! 💀

I also do that 😂 Man, the goth/grunge is pretty much my style…I think I just have a dash more punk and a pinch of 00s emo lol. That, Deathrock and Batcave have been my favorites from this video.
The pajama bottoms comment made me think of the simple pleasure of this current world of Zoom calls where I had to have an online interview all well groomed with a new button up shirt and out of view of the camera I'm sitting there in a tattered old skirt and flip flops. I looked at the grunge goth and growing up (20ish years ago?) that was pretty much every Goth I knew unless we decided to REALLY dress up for a night out because Goth as a sub culture, even within the alt scene, was something that you didn't see very much due to the fact that all our gear had to be hand made of smuggled in by someone who happened to go to London and it was downright unaffordable for us. In fact after all those years I think I have now again devolved into Grunge Goth\Nu Goth\Mall Goth just by default because I couldn't be fucking bothered to put in all the effort anymore.

I'm guessing all the goth-medieval-viking-crossover stems from the festival overlap, especially as the goth scene is basically centered around Germany in that aspect, where that culture is really present. Also, liking old, mystic stuff and ruins is pretty goth, so that interest is definitely shared.
I think I've always been goth. I like the music, literature, movies and the aesthetics. Even my own poetry has those gothic elements to it. I did go through an emo phase in middle school and high school, but goth was always something I identified more with. Unfortunately I was peer pressured to dress "normal" by friends, family and people at my church (practicing catholic 👋🏼). Also I'm a cook, and working 8-12 hours with that heat would've been hell. I'm almost 30 and I still love it. I've decided I want to start dressing goth, I hate not being able to fully express myself. It can be very miserable forcing yourself to conform to a "normal" style to make others comfortable with your presence.
Going on 50 yrs of age, i lived through all the Goth evolution and reVamps. I started as a Cure head and Trad Goth in the early 80’s when i was in my early teens. i can comfortably say im evolved into an Urban style Goth if a label were to dangle from my clothes. My style as an “Urban Goth” in tails a mixture of Trad Goth and Cure Head, East LA Cholo Style, a bit of Gothabily and Futuristic Goth. I also do Corp Goth when im at work. This is my own style and i enjoy where life’s journey has taken me thru. I dont claim “Goth” but i guess its what can define my style for those who choose to ask. Ive never been one to try to fit into a particular style ive needed to follow. My evolution has come from the path in life ive been through. Being true to my “Trad Goth” roots, the style incorporates me as a whole and i stay true to my music roots and the journey my fashion has grown into. Its nice to see all the different departments Goth / Darkly style has expanded to. With that said, i can appreciate anyone who enjoys the darkly / Goth lifestyle and invite others to become who they are within the beauty in darkness.
i’m still dippin my toes on goth fashion and knowing these variations, subcultures, and eras are totally helpful. your reactions and commentaries are really accepting and understanding, which really helps for a newbie like me. i hope more goths think like you, two! i consider my style right now as a “dead indie wanderer trapped in horror” which is like a dark indie style (mainly focused on horror elements and nature). I don’t really listen to a lot of death rock and metal music but i do like dark wave, indie rock, alt rock, grunge rock, and other indie/alt genres. i consider myself a horror freak and i find comfort in the art of darkness. I incorporate wanderer/traveler/forester aspects in my aesthetic because i am an advocate of sustainable fashion and environmentalism. i know my style is all over the place and i’m really experimenting on how i can incorporate more goth elements to it. i really respect and admire goth as a culture, lifestyle, and aesthetic. i hope people are more open to goth ambiguity and don’t gatekeep the creativity of someone just because it doesn’t fit a certain standard or category. just wanna say thank you again! and continue being great, random goth couple!
As a “normie” I find it fascinating there are gate keepers in all walks of life. But to see it in a style that is anti “normie” is the highest level of piety.

Sometimes I dressed like a goth can can dancer-I did to see sisters of mercy-sometimes I dressed Lolita which at the time (90s) it was not yet termed that-I would love to be bussel-Y Victorian goth but I’m sure that fashion not too affordable 😂. I saw all kinds of cool spins on all styles you mentioned thru out eras wall into our store. We had so much fun. My life long friend I met there-she was more punk-but she would goth out at times too. We sold neon to frilly. We also sold to techno goths. The 90s were all over the place-which made it so fun. Wear what you want I say!

I love trad, Victorian, Vampire and Batcave style for sure. But guess that have to do with my age. Soon 53. Haha, loved the comments about both Cyber and Gothic Lolita. At least where I came from and in the clubs we usually mixed in both styles for a period. But I didn't see one in "fully correct all way out style" on those both. Only thing I didn't like with Cybergoth were the furry leg warmers they used back then. Nu goth is also mine more comfy look today. Only style I don't like is the grunge one... But that's only my taste.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm really starting to understand the goth subcultures more now. Goth is someone who finds the beauty in the darker things in life, (possibly with the lighter things as well). For example: Someone can think a Graveyard is scary and gross, but another person (scared or not) can think a Graveyard is really cool! They feel that romance or the dress up in a dark fantasy (of whatever subcultures they choose/follow) is fun/cool! What I mean by that is like someone can say that dressing up in a vampire goth auesthetic and playing the music in the woods is fun/cool! They find beauty in the lighter/darker romance/lifestyle (interest) From my knowledge most goths are naturally into the darker side of life and love the dress up, movies, music, designs, poetry, etc.. Being a goth is natural, (because having the love for the darker side of life), but it's also a choice of interest. It's like being a furry for example: You love this video game and this character, so you dress up as that character to show how much you love it/appreciate it. It's the same way with gothism: You love vampires, the style, the vibes, the music, etc..so you get into the culture to show that you love it/appreciate it (along with being other parts of yourself, whether you're being a goth or not). I know there are many subcultures and "rules" but now I know you can choose a specific subculture and copy what is shown on the internet, but you can even evolve you're own style to represent it or to your own liking whether it's goth or not. I understand that being a goth most of the time comes naturally and you don't have to dress up/wear the makeup to be goth. What if a person only appreciates the darker side of life and doesn't get into any subcultures? From my studying the main core of goth is loving the darker side of life, but what if no one gets into any specific subculture? Are they still Goth? Or are they goth, but not any specific goth label? I believe that's what it is... Labels are tricky and I think it's okay to take a label and use it in your own way/even copying what you see on the internet. You can copy it if you like it and create your own out of inspiration. I understand that you can like other things (not just goth related things). For example: An emo loves being a furry, even though there are things that are considered an "emo thing" it's still something different. If I was to be a vampire goth for example..I can listen to vampire goth music, but I can listen to hip hop too! (: I apologize for my rambling as I'm interested in the Vampire goth/Romantic goth style and I think I want to try to find the music, movies, clothing online and see if it's what I want to pursue with. Deep inside I am in love with graveyards, abandoned buildings, Horror/Thriller movies, vintage, 1800s mansions era, lace, roses, etc. I believe I'm a goth at core, but I'm unsure if I want to full on pursue with a subculture. I'm very interested in it and I love the lifestyle, but I need to find parts that go with me. I even have people telling me all the time that I'm really pretty, I have a different jawline than most goths, my eyes are too colorful, my nose is too small, I would look weird as a goth, I'm better off looking normal/like a supermodel, etc. It makes life really difficult, but I'm trying so hard to not let that get to me and for me to be myself. I'm different and I don't want to be like everyone else 😂 I love you guys and thank you for all the videos that you make ♥️🖤🌹
i think the naming of different substyles mostly serves to recognize different motifs and trends within that fashion. if people don't put a lot of importance into expecting others to fitting into specific hyper-specific styles, then i think it's fine to do that (its like cataloging the history of the fashion). in the end, you're still part of the overarching community.
I’m late to the video but it’s so interesting how things come full circle. Like the “grunge” (alt-punk/metal/classic rock inspired stuff from Seattle specifically) subculture largely ended in the 90’s after Kurt died, but it’s come back as a label in like the tumblr era grunge stuff, now it’s more associated with emo and e-girl/boy stuff like it’s mind blowing. I feel like I have so many different boxes I could check off and be in many of these subcultures. The internet can be awful but that’s really cool about it.
Same, I tend to go with the mood but always have that gothicness in everything somehow😅 like I go to the most goth leaning emo bands compared to usual emos, same for metal bands and other subgenres of music and clothing
Hi there, I Live in Canada, so I know HEAT and COLD, intimately (let's hear it for A/C). I've just started watching your vids (and am LOVING the goth vibes) and I know this is kinda random, but being a HUGE 80's Metal fan (Dokken, Warlock, Loudness, Kruiz, Metal Church, etc.) and having nothing new to listen too for a LONG time, I finally found something pretty AMAZING. The band is called, BAND-MAID, and they're a Japanese all girl hard rock/metal band, who dress in sort of gothish MAID costumes, and I think they'd be right up your alley. The song to introduce you to them is called, THRILL, and look for the official studio video (NOT the live one - as the studio vid has some REALLY cool colour editing that I think you'd appreciate - not that the live vids are bad in anyway, as they're AMAZING live as well, but the official vid, like I mentioned, has some cool colouring throughout, which gives it an extra GOTHish kick). Hi…..this is a great video……really appreciate your positive viewpoint! I also appreciate that Goth fashion is more accessible these days. Even though I’m an artist and I do DIY some things…. It still makes it less frustrating. I also have less secondhand clothing shops where I live and I’m allergic to chemicals and secondhand clothing sticks of detergent and I always have to soak it for days and it usually still smells…..so I don’t always go that route 4 myself.
I remember seeing flapper girl goths in mid-late 80s in south, southwest US. Louise Brooks pageboy bobs or Theda Bara chin-length bobs, thin eyebrows, flapper dresses or longer w empire waist. There was still lots of that kind of garb available in vintage shops along with accessories like beaded clutches, headbands. We called them Vamps but not to be confused with the Vampire Goth sub ala Vanian. There was also a softer Trad subtype in the same area of the US that, I suppose the only way to describe it is Ally Sheedy "Breakfast Club" goth. Big baggy clothes, black shorter bobs and bangs, heavy eyeliner/smoky. Yes, I'm old. I have docs (US slang for DMs) older than the both of ya. ;)
Gothic looks came from post punk too…just darker. Deathrock is more gothic punk. But I feel silent film stars and expressionistic films influenced goth too.

Back then, the vintage stores were full of that stuff and it was cheap. Of course, I don't remember anyone calling it, or any other variants, "goth" until the 90s.
Victorian goth came from 70s fashion. The Victorian trend was big in the 70s. And goths got those clothes in thrift shops. I was Victorian goth in the late 80s. Leather calf boots, poet shirts, hats, prairie dresses, retro dresses (not retro then) all pretty cheap to get. And I thifted at a place that sold theater clothes…they were next to an opera house. People at the time looked down on thrift stores as being dirty or for poor people. Cast offs. :) Your Stevie Nicks comment was spot on. Plus, beatnik culture was an influence too that people talk rarely about.
Correct! I tell anglophones that it rhymes with "producer" and that tends to help. But many people don't even try to pronounce it they say La......and just trail off. So good try!
In the manga BLAME! by Tsutomu Nihei there are these characters who look like cyber goths called silicon life, really fecking cool looking. I also suggest that manga on its own, it's one of the best hardcore sci-fi.

Studded many a jacket (leather, pleather, and denim) and I will tell you my best friend was an awl and a lighter. Lighting the lighter for about 30 seconds and running it over the leather in places to just punch the awl through, pleather is easy to bunch through but doesn’t uphold after years, denim you have to get long backed spikes because it frays. Edit: a goth married to a southern man who loves The Cure and Robert Smith and Ted Nugent (20 years apart), he watched all of them live or knew of them personally through family ties. Such a fun thing.
We called ourselves batcavers before the term Goth stuck. Even in Reno, NV, where I lived at the time we called ourselves Batcavers. The first time I heard the term Goth I was like I didn't like it.
I don’t really care about what people wear, I don’t know why people get upset about it. It’s just clothes, and bursts of inspiration from other fashion/cultures, etc. 🤷🏼♀️
I think yume kawaii and fairy kei can be confusing because of the usual colour palette and slouchy silhouette they both have, I think as well there is a lot of people who just think fairy kei is any pastel clothes so it has been watered down over the years but there is actually supposed to be an 80’s influence in fairy kei. So the leg warmers, the pastel high top sneakers you often see people in, character goods for characters that were created in that era like the Care Bears and my little pony are prevalent for that reason. It’s hard to tell because a lot of people misuse hashtags and try and over categorise jfashion a lot but I think yume kawaii is supposed to resemble pyjamas or cute lounge wear and have sleep/dream motifs like clouds.
Entered the goth scene in late 2019. I have some grey pants and black ones. Lots of black, grey, and white shirts. I can usually be seen wearing a black denim jacket in spring or around the house, and with a black trench coat in colder weather. I have another black jacket, but it barely fits. I also have a red rose amulet from my mother. I also have a signature face paint look that I used to wear everywhere, but almost no job out there would allow it, and I don't know anyone I can hang out with on the weekends, so it fell by the wayside. Let me tell you, it would have been really nice to have grown up in an age where I could have access to more options, but I found a way.
I would say, that fashion (aka fashion at clubs) almost always follows a new genre of music, subsets only really stand out if that genre gets popular enough.

I am 47 and have literally lived through all these styles of goth. I favoured trad goth and Victorian goth. Now married with kids I only wear black, but would be classed as a casual goth as it’s more practical for my lifestyle.
Me too. I’m a carer so I tone it down a bit. I don’t wear my makeup out of nessesity more than anything (elderly people like their houses hot!) and ide just sweat it off! But I still dress like a witch and I won’t compromise on that

The argument about “too easy to find” for Nu Goth is stupid because corporate goth stuff is easy to find. It’s just work clothes, but black. But they don’t complain about that. I don’t think they hate the style, I think they’re a) jealous because it wasn’t available when they were younger and b) more annoyed at mass consumerism rather than the fashion itself. I empathise a little because I myself don’t personally like the “mass produced” look or feel of the style but that’s just on myself - for other people I think go for it. Plus, you can still diy your clothes and make them look Nu Goth. At the end of the day, we live in a modern, highly accessible, materialist/consumerist world now and it’s never gonna be like “the good old days”. Things change. Things evolve. You don’t have to take it THAT seriously.
Exactly! It's the 21st century, it's not the 1980s anymore. Things chance, things evolve. The only point I agree with is disliking mass consumerism and fast fashion and its negative impact on the environment etc. That I am 100% on board with. But don't use that as an excuse to hide behind to hate on somebody's fashion or lifestyle

Hi. Thanks for doing this reaction video to my project. I really enjoyed it! You are some of my favourite UA-camrs and I appreciated your thoughtful commentary.
Since it seemed to perplex you alot, here's my motivation for including both Batcave and Trad Goth: Batcave was first, before Goth was a codified thing. It was totally DIY, a reaction to 70s hippie and mod styles, and influenced by Rocky Horror, drag, glam/Bowie, German expressionism and art, and S&M cultures, it was still a holdover from the decadent 70s and it's uniquely "club" fashion. Only the brave wore this look out on the street during the day. When I look at early photos of Bauhaus, Alien Sex Fiend, and the kids who hung out at the Batcave in the early 1980s, I see a distinct style from looking at photos of Trad Goths from 1985-1990 who were influenced by Siouxsie, the Cure, etc. Those looks - with the thrifted trenchcoats and dress shirts, jeans, are not so sexual, and it's when you start to see actual gothic clothing designs being manufactured, and with more younger people wearing it, it evolves to be fashion that isn't just "club" fashion. I suppose our Batcave look in this video could have been more wild to make it stand out from Trad, but I believe it's also completely legit to what many people would have worn around 1982 when going to that club.
As for Hippie Goth, here in North America, "tribal goth" or "goth fusion" is a thing, separate from Pagan Goth or Viking Goth or other more European styles. But those terms have gone out of fashion and more people have pointed out the Othering/Racist tones of those words, so when I asked people in those scenes they suggested calling it Hippie Goth .Happy to hear from more people about that, who know more than me.

Completely understand where you're coming from now with the trad and batcave separation, viewing it as the style before the goth label even emerged. I think in more recent years the terminology has just become interchangeable in the general lexicon but I do agree that there's a big distinction when viewing it as the roots of the style.
The hippie goth one was just extra perplexing because hippie has a different connotation here and is generally hurled at anyone alternative here as an insult. The other word I was looking for in the video was "medieval" gothic. But I did say that I'm sure the person has their reasons for the naming convention and what it means to them and seeing as it's something we're unfamiliar with I wouldn't know.

Yeah, I don't recall any of us differentiating or naming our style anything. We were just dressing like musicians we admired and putting our individual creative spins on our outfits, makeup and hair. I will say, though, that the changes throughout the decades is noticeable.

Regarding the nu goth thing, I agree with your analysis that it's sort of the "new mall goth" - never thought of it that way until you said it but it's pretty spot on now that I think about it! In the 2000's people criticized mall goth for being a goth-in-a-box kit too far removed from the original subculture, and isn't that exactly what nu goth is seen as too? Mall goth was people buying a whole outfit from Hot Topic or whatever, nu goth is people buying a whole outfit from Killstar I guess. Different styles, same critiques. Nu goth is the mall goth of the 2010's in that regard. Interesting point, I think you really hit the nail on the head!
To add to the "NU Goth" conversation and how it's "too easy", some people like myself absolutely SUCK at sewing, distressing etc. I just don't get the argument. 🤷🏻♂️
Some people will find anything to complain about honestly! It's the 21st century, the Internet exists, its not the 80s anymore so they need to just accept the times we live in. I myself am similar and find sewing etc time consuming and difficult so I very much appreciate the modern convenience 💀

I think people forget that og goths also incorporated accessible/"trendy" items into their wardrobe from their own time period as well. The average goth teen wasn't spending hours and hours and hundreds of dollars on their wardrobe, they just wore what they liked until it wore out and then wore it out even more for fashion purposes.
There were plenty of people who did tons of creative things with their wardrobe, but there were also plenty who just wore whatever they felt like that day and whatever they could afford from their local mall or thrift store.

Hippie Goth is the last thing I would have called the Pagan/ Druid Gothic look. It could have also been called Medieval Goth...or maybe Renaissance Goth. Definitely not Hippie. However, I understand labeling Gothic styles can be very difficult. Thank you Lynn for pointing out Victorian goths are the original goths. I completely agree.

Hi. I started Goth in a little tiny town in USA at the age of five in the 80's. My role models were Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Ursa from Superman 2, and She-Ra.
Can we discuss the makeup matching not only each other but the current background? I am digging the purple and black feel. It inspires me to do my own makeup. Not that I ever go out, because as you said - it is too dang hot.
I agree sub-styles, unless totally opposite… are completely useless. Like a great example is “ romantic goth” and “ vampire goth” are basically very similar. As is Victorian goth. 1980s goth was more like punk/goth simple but still looked cool. But one sub-style after another is too much and it ends up confusing people if anything.
I'm unsure whether I edited it out but I did make a point that "romantic" "vampire" and "victorian" goth are all very similar to me and in my head are shared under the same substyle umbrella. I also understand the need to distinguish though. So it's a difficult topic to tackle. However when things start getting new names every week for very very slight differences I agree it ends up doing more harm than good. Less separation, more celebrating of shared interests, we're all goths at the end of the day at least! 💀

I love that gothic clothing is so much more accessible these days. I feel blessed to have known camden in london when it was at it's best. That was when i was a teen and it was like going to a candy store 🤣 i diy fishnets and tops but I'm not gonna say no to making my life a little easier now that I'm almost 29 with 2 kids in tow
The first time we went to Camden was amazing! It's a shame it's not like it once was! And completely agree on the accessibility. Sometimes you're just too busy to hand sew and stud a jacket so the convenience is just nice. At the end of the day your clothes are FOR YOU. Not anyone else, so screw what they think! 💀

Man, the goth/grunge is pretty much my style…I think I just have a dash more punk and a pinch of 00s emo lol. That, Deathrock and Batcave have been my favorites from this video.
The pajama bottoms comment made me think of the simple pleasure of this current world of Zoom calls where I had to have an online interview all well groomed with a new button up shirt and out of view of the camera I'm sitting there in a tattered old skirt and flip flops.
I looked at the grunge goth and growing up (20ish years ago?) that was pretty much every Goth I knew unless we decided to REALLY dress up for a night out because Goth as a sub culture, even within the alt scene, was something that you didn't see very much due to the fact that all our gear had to be hand made of smuggled in by someone who happened to go to London and it was downright unaffordable for us. In fact after all those years I think I have now again devolved into Grunge Goth\Nu Goth\Mall Goth just by default because I couldn't be fucking bothered to put in all the effort anymore.

I'm guessing all the goth-medieval-viking-crossover stems from the festival overlap, especially as the goth scene is basically centered around Germany in that aspect, where that culture is really present. Also, liking old, mystic stuff and ruins is pretty goth, so that interest is definitely shared.
I think I've always been goth. I like the music, literature, movies and the aesthetics. Even my own poetry has those gothic elements to it.
I did go through an emo phase in middle school and high school, but goth was always something I identified more with.
Unfortunately I was peer pressured to dress "normal" by friends, family and people at my church (practicing catholic 👋🏼). Also I'm a cook, and working 8-12 hours with that heat would've been hell.
I'm almost 30 and I still love it. I've decided I want to start dressing goth, I hate not being able to fully express myself. It can be very miserable forcing yourself to conform to a "normal" style to make others comfortable with your presence.

Going on 50 yrs of age, i lived through all the Goth evolution and reVamps. I started as a Cure head and Trad Goth in the early 80’s when i was in my early teens. i can comfortably say im evolved into an Urban style Goth if a label were to dangle from my clothes. My style as an “Urban Goth” in tails a mixture of Trad Goth and Cure Head, East LA Cholo Style, a bit of Gothabily and Futuristic Goth. I also do Corp Goth when im at work. This is my own style and i enjoy where life’s journey has taken me thru. I dont claim “Goth” but i guess its what can define my style for those who choose to ask.
Ive never been one to try to fit into a particular style ive needed to follow. My evolution has come from the path in life ive been through. Being true to my “Trad Goth” roots, the style incorporates me as a whole and i stay true to my music roots and the journey my fashion has grown into. Its nice to see all the different departments Goth / Darkly style has expanded to.
With that said, i can appreciate anyone who enjoys the darkly / Goth lifestyle and invite others to become who they are within the beauty in darkness.
i’m still dippin my toes on goth fashion and knowing these variations, subcultures, and eras are totally helpful. your reactions and commentaries are really accepting and understanding, which really helps for a newbie like me. i hope more goths think like you, two!
i consider my style right now as a “dead indie wanderer trapped in horror” which is like a dark indie style (mainly focused on horror elements and nature). I don’t really listen to a lot of death rock and metal music but i do like dark wave, indie rock, alt rock, grunge rock, and other indie/alt genres. i consider myself a horror freak and i find comfort in the art of darkness. I incorporate wanderer/traveler/forester aspects in my aesthetic because i am an advocate of sustainable fashion and environmentalism. i know my style is all over the place and i’m really experimenting on how i can incorporate more goth elements to it. i really respect and admire goth as a culture, lifestyle, and aesthetic. i hope people are more open to goth ambiguity and don’t gatekeep the creativity of someone just because it doesn’t fit a certain standard or category.

Sometimes I dressed like a goth can can dancer-I did to see sisters of mercy-sometimes I dressed Lolita which at the time (90s) it was not yet termed that-I would love to be bussel-Y Victorian goth but I’m sure that fashion not too affordable 😂. I saw all kinds of cool spins on all styles you mentioned thru out eras wall into our store. We had so much fun. My life long friend I met there-she was more punk-but she would goth out at times too. We sold neon to frilly. We also sold to techno goths. The 90s were all over the place-which made it so fun. Wear what you want I say!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I'm really starting to understand the goth subcultures more now.
Goth is someone who finds the beauty in the darker things in life, (possibly with the lighter things as well). For example: Someone can think a Graveyard is scary and gross, but another person (scared or not) can think a Graveyard is really cool!
They feel that romance or the dress up in a dark fantasy (of whatever subcultures they choose/follow) is fun/cool! What I mean by that is like someone can say that dressing up in a vampire goth auesthetic and playing the music in the woods is fun/cool! They find beauty in the lighter/darker romance/lifestyle (interest)
From my knowledge most goths are naturally into the darker side of life and love the dress up, movies, music, designs, poetry, etc..
Being a goth is natural, (because having the love for the darker side of life), but it's also a choice of interest. It's like being a furry for example: You love this video game and this character, so you dress up as that character to show how much you love it/appreciate it.
It's the same way with gothism: You love vampires, the style, the vibes, the music, etc..so you get into the culture to show that you love it/appreciate it (along with being other parts of yourself, whether you're being a goth or not).
I know there are many subcultures and "rules" but now I know you can choose a specific subculture and copy what is shown on the internet, but you can even evolve you're own style to represent it or to your own liking whether it's goth or not.
I understand that being a goth most of the time comes naturally and you don't have to dress up/wear the makeup to be goth.
What if a person only appreciates the darker side of life and doesn't get into any subcultures? From my studying the main core of goth is loving the darker side of life, but what if no one gets into any specific subculture? Are they still Goth? Or are they goth, but not any specific goth label? I believe that's what it is...
Labels are tricky and I think it's okay to take a label and use it in your own way/even copying what you see on the internet. You can copy it if you like it and create your own out of inspiration.
I understand that you can like other things (not just goth related things). For example: An emo loves being a furry, even though there are things that are considered an "emo thing" it's still something different. If I was to be a vampire goth for example..I can listen to vampire goth music, but I can listen to hip hop too! (:
I apologize for my rambling as I'm interested in the Vampire goth/Romantic goth style and I think I want to try to find the music, movies, clothing online and see if it's what I want to pursue with.
Deep inside I am in love with graveyards, abandoned buildings, Horror/Thriller movies, vintage, 1800s mansions era, lace, roses, etc. I believe I'm a goth at core, but I'm unsure if I want to full on pursue with a subculture. I'm very interested in it and I love the lifestyle, but I need to find parts that go with me. I even have people telling me all the time that I'm really pretty, I have a different jawline than most goths, my eyes are too colorful, my nose is too small, I would look weird as a goth, I'm better off looking normal/like a supermodel, etc. It makes life really difficult, but I'm trying so hard to not let that get to me and for me to be myself. I'm different and I don't want to be like everyone else 😂

i think the naming of different substyles mostly serves to recognize different motifs and trends within that fashion. if people don't put a lot of importance into expecting others to fitting into specific hyper-specific styles, then i think it's fine to do that (its like cataloging the history of the fashion). in the end, you're still part of the overarching community.

I’m late to the video but it’s so interesting how things come full circle. Like the “grunge” (alt-punk/metal/classic rock inspired stuff from Seattle specifically) subculture largely ended in the 90’s after Kurt died, but it’s come back as a label in like the tumblr era grunge stuff, now it’s more associated with emo and e-girl/boy stuff like it’s mind blowing. I feel like I have so many different boxes I could check off and be in many of these subcultures. The internet can be awful but that’s really cool about it.

Same, I tend to go with the mood but always have that gothicness in everything somehow😅 like I go to the most goth leaning emo bands compared to usual emos, same for metal bands and other subgenres of music and clothing
Hi there, I Live in Canada, so I know HEAT and COLD, intimately (let's hear it for A/C).
I've just started watching your vids (and am LOVING the goth vibes) and I know this is kinda random, but being a HUGE 80's Metal fan (Dokken, Warlock, Loudness, Kruiz, Metal Church, etc.) and having nothing new to listen too for a LONG time, I finally found something pretty AMAZING.
The band is called, BAND-MAID, and they're a Japanese all girl hard rock/metal band, who dress in sort of gothish MAID costumes, and I think they'd be right up your alley.
The song to introduce you to them is called, THRILL, and look for the official studio video (NOT the live one - as the studio vid has some REALLY cool colour editing that I think you'd appreciate - not that the live vids are bad in anyway, as they're AMAZING live as well, but the official vid, like I mentioned, has some cool colouring throughout, which gives it an extra GOTHish kick).

Hi…..this is a great video……really appreciate your positive viewpoint! I also appreciate that Goth fashion is more accessible these days. Even though I’m an artist and I do DIY some things…. It still makes it less frustrating. I also have less secondhand clothing shops where I live and I’m allergic to chemicals and secondhand clothing sticks of detergent and I always have to soak it for days and it usually still smells…..so I don’t always go that route 4 myself.
I remember seeing flapper girl goths in mid-late 80s in south, southwest US. Louise Brooks pageboy bobs or Theda Bara chin-length bobs, thin eyebrows, flapper dresses or longer w empire waist. There was still lots of that kind of garb available in vintage shops along with accessories like beaded clutches, headbands. We called them Vamps but not to be confused with the Vampire Goth sub ala Vanian.
There was also a softer Trad subtype in the same area of the US that, I suppose the only way to describe it is Ally Sheedy "Breakfast Club" goth. Big baggy clothes, black shorter bobs and bangs, heavy eyeliner/smoky.

Gothic looks came from post punk too…just darker. Deathrock is more gothic punk. But I feel silent film stars and expressionistic films influenced goth too.

In the early/mid 80s, at least in my area, some girls adopted a gothy version of Louise Brooks, Theda Bara look, with chin-length and page boy bobs, heavy eyeliner and flapper-style dresses and accessories. Back then, the vintage stores were full of that stuff and it was cheap.
Of course, I don't remember anyone calling it, or any other variants, "goth" until the 90s.
I feel like we missed a perfect opportunity during the age discussion for a "proof that it's not a phase mom!" or something quote lol

Victorian goth came from 70s fashion. The Victorian trend was big in the 70s. And goths got those clothes in thrift shops. I was Victorian goth in the late 80s. Leather calf boots, poet shirts, hats, prairie dresses, retro dresses (not retro then) all pretty cheap to get. And I thifted at a place that sold theater clothes…they were next to an opera house. People at the time looked down on thrift stores as being dirty or for poor people. Cast offs. :) Your Stevie Nicks comment was spot on. Plus, beatnik culture was an influence too that people talk rarely about.

Correct! I tell anglophones that it rhymes with "producer" and that tends to help. But many people don't even try to pronounce it they say La......and just trail off. So good try!
In the manga BLAME! by Tsutomu Nihei there are these characters who look like cyber goths called silicon life, really fecking cool looking. I also suggest that manga on its own, it's one of the best hardcore sci-fi.

Studded many a jacket (leather, pleather, and denim) and I will tell you my best friend was an awl and a lighter. Lighting the lighter for about 30 seconds and running it over the leather in places to just punch the awl through, pleather is easy to bunch through but doesn’t uphold after years, denim you have to get long backed spikes because it frays.
Edit: a goth married to a southern man who loves The Cure and Robert Smith and Ted Nugent (20 years apart), he watched all of them live or knew of them personally through family ties. Such a fun thing.

We called ourselves batcavers before the term Goth stuck. Even in Reno, NV, where I lived at the time we called ourselves Batcavers. The first time I heard the term Goth I was like I didn't like it.
Yep, this is as much a timeline as it is a delineation of styles.
I don’t really care about what people wear, I don’t know why people get upset about it. It’s just clothes, and bursts of inspiration from other fashion/cultures, etc. 🤷🏼♀️

I think yume kawaii and fairy kei can be confusing because of the usual colour palette and slouchy silhouette they both have, I think as well there is a lot of people who just think fairy kei is any pastel clothes so it has been watered down over the years but there is actually supposed to be an 80’s influence in fairy kei. So the leg warmers, the pastel high top sneakers you often see people in, character goods for characters that were created in that era like the Care Bears and my little pony are prevalent for that reason. It’s hard to tell because a lot of people misuse hashtags and try and over categorise jfashion a lot but I think yume kawaii is supposed to resemble pyjamas or cute lounge wear and have sleep/dream motifs like clouds.
Entered the goth scene in late 2019. I have some grey pants and black ones. Lots of black, grey, and white shirts. I can usually be seen wearing a black denim jacket in spring or around the house, and with a black trench coat in colder weather. I have another black jacket, but it barely fits. I also have a red rose amulet from my mother. I also have a signature face paint look that I used to wear everywhere, but almost no job out there would allow it, and I don't know anyone I can hang out with on the weekends, so it fell by the wayside.
Let me tell you, it would have been really nice to have grown up in an age where I could have access to more options, but I found a way.

I would say, that fashion (aka fashion at clubs) almost always follows a new genre of music, subsets only really stand out if that genre gets popular enough.
Seriously you guys make me feel old! I was going to goth clubs when cybergoth was big. Lol.
