  • Overcoming Resentment
    Matthew 20:1-16
Resentment describes a negative emotional reaction to being mistreated. A bitter indignation at having been treated unfairly. Resentment will rob you of your joy. It will rob you of your peace. It will destroy your quality of life, your friendships and relationships. “A life filled with resentments chains us down to a victim mindset and stifles us from making changes that could make life more fulfilling, more productive and joyful.” - (Dr. Nathan Cobb - How to Overcome Resentment)
When Joseph's brothers witnessed their father’s favoritism and heard Joseph's dream to rule over them, they were jealous and hated their brother (Genesis 37:4-11).
When Saul heard the women singing, “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” Saul became very angry and from that time on Saul kept a “jealous eye” on David (1 Samuel 18:7-9).
When the prodigal son returned home his father threw him a party to celebrate his return. The elder brother was resentful and became angry and refused to be a part of the celebration (Luke 15:28-30).
When the full day vineyard laborers received their pay and noticed the half day laborers being paid the same amount they became upset believing they had been treated unfairly (Matthew 20:1-16).
Notice the effects of their resentment: First, they were being destroyed from within: complaining, jealousy and envy. Secondly, they turned against their fellow workers. Third, their resentment turned them against their employer.
To overcome resentment, you must place your life under the control of Jesus Christ. Be forgiven and forgive. Be grateful. Stop comparing yourself to others. Learn to rejoice in the blessings of other people.
