So far the best explanation with good video of every step. Thank you! This really helped me figure out what wasn't done correctly on the soft top and frame I bought for my 93 and will def help me get the other top on the frame for my 90!
Thank you for the video, Notenoughprojects. Very well done! I am not a Miata owner, but I am looking at one that needs a new top. I have watched probably at least a half dozen videos about how to replace the top and yours is by far the best one!
Hello, Alright, I have a question from Germany. I have an old miata and wanted to change the top. The screws in the rear area are rusted and unfortunately broken off. Do you maybe have an idea and thank you very much for your help and your great videos. Reza
If you only have one or two that broke you should be fine. If a bunch snapped then unfortunately the only real fix is to cut/drill them out and replace either with a bolt/nut or weld in new studs
Love the video planning on replacing mine I was just wondering all I got rn for the replacement is a top rain rail and going to get a rivet gun but what size are the rivets plus anything else I need thank you !!
The rivets are 4mm or 5/32 I belive. The only place you really need to rivet is to the b pillar. The rain rail is fine without rivets. Hope it goes smooth for you!
just be aware - it took my son and I 6.5 hrs to complete. It would have been 8 hours, but my son's friend who does canvass work on boats joined us with appropriate tools. In my opinion, two people are a minimum for this job - you do need 3-4 hands on occasion. The rivet holes will likely be too large after you overdrill old rivets, so I would suggest getting rivet backing (like small washers). Also, doing it on a hot day is a PITA, but it makes fabric much easier to stretch (and you will be stretching it). Finally, when replacing the 3-part rail in the back holding and stretching the fabric, start on one side and move across. DO NOT put in the side rails first - the middle part will not fit. Make sure you have this video on hand - there are a LOT of details you MUST get correctly; we had to refer to the videos at least 4 times during this job.
Great video. I just installed my top this weekend and my configuration is the same as yours. NA with a NB top with a glass window. I didn’t know how to do the elastic so this video makes a lot of sense. What did you end up doing to make the elastic stay attached to the bows? Did the washers work?
Sorry I'm just getting back to you on this. The elastic ended up pulling out. We have just been manually moving the bow into position before lowering the top. Coming up with a better method is on my list of things to do
anyone know if its easier to do it like this or removing the entire frame, i really havent done much work on any cars other than simple maintenance so dont have very much experience
I've never found it worthwhile to remove the frame personally, but some people prefer to. Only tricky part is the lower b pillar screw but it is not too bad. Probably a toss up between the two methods, but frame removal seems like more work to me
We've watched about 10 different vids on Miata top replacement. This one is far and away the best. Thanks for the excellent vid.
Glad it was helpful. Thank you!
My soft top came with 0 instructions, and I’m putting an NB style glass window top on my NA so this is VERY helpful. Thank you so much!

Which screws exactly are broken? The rain rail studs?
@@NotEnoughProjects Many thanks for the answer. That's right. Rain rail bolts have broken off.
