I'm with Barcley with the apprehension of transporters. For more fun you should watch channel CGP GREY and their 5 minute short, "The Trouble with Transporters".
One of the things I like about Star Trek is that they, generally, believe people when they report something odd. It makes sense considering they are explorers and are learning about strange stuff all the time.
I would hope the senior staff [on the flagship of the fleet (representing the culmination of myriad species working together across a quadrant of our galaxy) charged to take the lead in exploration, diplomacy and security] don't lie to each other 😂😂😂😂
One of my favorite things about this episode is when Barclay finally does beam over, no one chastises him, no one teases him, they're all like, hey you're here let's get to work.
Barclay has had such an arc during TNG. Look at how he was when he first appeared, unable to even look someone in the eye and barely able to speak to anyone. Now, even as he was freaking out about the transporter, he was able to have a back and forth discussion with Geordi and O'Brien, and even had the confidence to wake the senior staff when he was personally sure that it wasn't just him have teleporter psychosis.
Personally, Barclay always gave me to many Murdock-vibes from the A-Team. But that was a show that was supposed to be funny. In the ST context, his character somehow never felt convincing. Not sure if his role was written that way, or if Dwight Schultz overemphasised that with his performance. Probably the former. But IMO they should have dialed it down a notch or two. Esp. since he had some very good storylines. But to me it always felt like someone with such problems would never managed to get through the academy.
Bones was also scared of the transporter: "I signed aboard this ship to practice medicine, not to have my atoms scattered back and forth across space by this gadget.”
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate how thoughtful your reactions are to Star Trek. You really treat it with the respect it deserves. It's always a pleasure to see your new videos.
I like that Barclay is one of the best engineers in Starfleet, he has saved the Enterprise and earned his position on the flagship, yet he's exceedingly human. He has social anxiety, gets addicted the the holodeck (who wouldn't), ect. It makes ST feel a bit more real.
Great reaction, Jen. Some real phobia emotions showing through on this episode! My daughter used to freak out about spiders when she was young. I made a game out of it, and made a “Get rid of One Spider, Free” card that she could keep in her desk. She would bring it to me whenever she needed one deported from her room. Eventually, I showed her how to capture them without harm and release them outside, where they could live out their lives catching other bugs. She does this on her own to this day. No spider phobia, just the normal reaction you would expect, plus some constructive capturing techniques applied to the spider. Except Wolf Spiders. Those guys are too fast for her. They require a bit of finesse.
I wholeheartedly agree. It’s been fantastic watching her Star Trek journey. Easily my favourite Star Trek reactor, with Popcorn In Bed being a close second.
This episode has several points that have stuck with me since it's first airing. The tapping behind the ear, the worms in the beam....... Nightmares from it... But the way he grabs them in the end, frequently reminded of when I hug people.
"Formulated by the German physicist and Nobel laureate Werner Heisenberg in 1927, the uncertainty principle states that we cannot know both the position and speed of a particle, such as a photon or electron, with perfect accuracy; the more we nail down the particle's position, the less we know about its speed and vice versa." Thank goodness for those Heisenberg Compensators!
Part of the reason for this is because you literally have to add energy to the subatomic particle you're trying to observe. No matter if you're shooting photons at it or interacting with a magnetic field, the more precise your information is, the more potential energy the particle will have. So in terms of a teleporter, I guess it allows the computer to simultaneously nail down the exact location and energy of a every little bit of a person, within some necessary precision that'd be impossible today.
The speed-location-uncertainty is also observable in the macroscopic universe: If a car is on the move, two measure points are nessescary to determinate the speed. But the result is always only an average speed, it didn't say if the speed between both points was constant or if it varried, was excelerated or reduced. It's only a guess, so while it was inbetween the measure points, it can't be said for sure where it was exactly at every given moment. But a car - in opposite to the elemental particles forming atoms - can stand still so both speed and location could be determinated when the speed is zero.
It goes even further that e.g. exact speed and position at the same time does not have a physical meaning. It is not possible. Not only not knowledgeable. Classical analogy: For a musical tone you need a minimum duration, because tones are sound waves. The longer the tone, the more exact is the pitch=frequency. If you have infinite shortness, nothing is vibrating. The maximum speed is around 10 notes per second for medium high notes, faster, and the pitch of the individual notes loses its meaning.
Another great example of the crew not gaslighting somebody having “a weird feeling”. They’re just like “Frig it. We’re explorers. Let’s run a diagnostic at the very least 🤷🏻♂️”
I love that they behaved like that rather than just blowing it off. There were some shows where that was the reaction of five seasons of “weirdness of the week”.
The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal states that we can not know both the speed and location of a particle of matter simultaneously. So in theory, we would loose pieces of us in transport. Apparently the Heisenberg compensators are meant to correct that.
O'Brien is an enlisted Starfleet personnel, he didn't go through the Academy, so he's not an officer. Even the smallest officer ranks such as Ensign outrank him. However, if you take only experience into account, as Capt Rex would say in SW Clone Wars: "Experience outranks everything..." The crew knows that Barclay is weird but they also know that he's competent and he saved the ship on more than one occasion already, so they trust his judgement, especially since despite his fear he went back in there just to test a theory.
Despite his fear he went back in there just to test a theory, that's called-COURAGE-being afraid of anything, yet, doing it any way. Cudos to Barclay. You'd think O'Brien was the only non-commissioned officer on board the Enterprise, any other non-com is rarely ever seen or mentioned.
Actually, many sources state enlisted *do* go to Starfleet Academy, but for a one-year program instead of the 4 year program for officers. They have to learn their jobs somewhere. Kind of how in the real military of today, enlisted recruits go through basic, learn what they will be doing (their MOS), then go off to various schools to learn how to do the job, often several such schools.
@@arno_nuehm_1 More of a plot divot. They at that point just didn't have enlisted rank pins that were distinct from officer ones (out of universe, of course).
Not sure how that is a joke. The transporter would have to read the position and energy state of every atom in item being transported. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle says reading the position changes the energy state and vice versa making a simultaneous reading of both together impossible (because classical physics get weird at the quantum level), but if they know how much the energy state of each elemental atom changes when its position is read the compensator can adjust the value to a close enough approximation of the true value by subtracting the deviation caused by the read. The nickname for it is "Baby Blue".
@@larrybremer4930 It's a joke because at the time they didn't even try to come up with an explanation, the name says it all. I'm sure since then it's been explained how they work somewhere both in canon and non canon but I've forgotten hearing it if it has.
While a professional, "military" organization, I like how kind, understanding & personable everyone is after Barclay beams over. Geordie inquires if he is OK first, then moves on to a "Let's get to work." stance. (both to "get the job done" as well as to take Barclay's mind off of things.) Even Riker gives him a semi-warm. "Glad you could make it.". With the unspoken subtext of, "Don't worry. You aren't in any professional trouble for your freak-out.".
Barclay is an interesting character, relatable because of his anxieties but still wildly competent in spite of them. In this episode, he acts on an impulse and ends up saving what, a dozen lives?
I loved Dwight Schultz as Mad Murdoch in the A-Team TV show. When he started popping up here and there as Barclay in Next Generation, I was always a bit more excited to see what misadventures would befall him. :)
11:14 I was thinking to myself "Picard looks weird here", then I realised it's because this was still only the second episode filmed after the actors got back from break, and Patrick Stewart (and the others) still had tans. I remember the cast talking about the 'stage pallor' they would all develop over months of spending their entire days filming on a sound stage.
I like how Barcley asks the Computer for the symptoms of the Syndrome and seems to feel all the symptoms. It's like today when we feel unwell and check the internet (which makes us feel worse than we actually are). And this was years before the internet became a common thing.
Hypochondria existed before the internet. Folks would get information from words on paper, they’d keep them in stacks between durable covers. Books they called them. Lots and lots and lots of them were piled on shelves in large buildings. You'd have to go there and interact with an employee: "Top o' the mornin' Mildred!" you'd say "How's the family? You still renting the horse carcass in the ditch behind the blacksmith's? Anyhow, I'm here to loan out the lastest telegraphs from Siam and Prussia and am inquiring if you carry Shakespeare?" Now Shakespeare is some mighty fine reading. Although you have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.
@@CsykKrit I seriously doubt that every Average Joe had medical textbooks at home to compare his symptoms with. And time-consuming research in a library would have been a bit too much. So most of the people just went straight to the doctor without doing any research what they might have.
As I recall, there's a part in the book '3 men and a boat' in which one character does start reading a medical textbook and decides he has everthing in there except housemaid's knee. That was published in 1889.
Barclay was played by Dwight Schultz. He is so funny in 'The A Team' as Murdock. A very good actor. Dwight Schultz is an American actor known for playing Howling Mad Murdock from The A-Team and Reginald Barclay from Star Trek: The Next Generation.
This is perhaps my favorite Barclay episode cuz it combines the Star Trek tech (being inside the transporter matter stream) and Reg dealing with his fear of it. Sorry Jen, but I couldn't help but giggle and smile at your reaction to Christina crawling up Barclay's arm. I'm not a fan of creepy crawlies either. Star Trek may have eliminated poverty centuries ago but human frailties are here to stay. Nice reaction.
Senior Cheif O'Brian is an enlisted non-commissioned officer. Every person on the bridge, including the Ensigns, outrank him. It seems like starfleet uses the navy's rank structure. He is the naval equivalent of an E-8 in his pay grade. He outranks all the enlisted people on the ship except an E-9 Master Cheif. So miss Jen, if you're wondering if he ever gets promoted...he only has one more pay grade he can achieve before he is at the top, but all commissioned officers will always outrank him because he is still enlisted.
5:55 The Heisenberg compensator is a fictional device in Star Trek that allows for precise measurement of a particle's position and momentum. It was designed to work around the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which states that it's impossible to know both a particle's position and momentum with perfect accuracy.
Yeah, Barclay's a comforting character because he's more like what I'd be in that century. I would not be one of the cool people who has everything together. Friggin' transporters! X)
Greetings Admiral Murray 😊😊 Another Star Trek Sunday is done. Forgot about Mr.Barkley and his fear of transporters. ❤ Love your reactions as always. Live long and prosper 🖖 😊
Come on Jen! Christina is adorable! Just look at how cute and fuzzy she is! Tarantulas are really gentle creatures! Just like a cat with a few extra legs!
If transporter technology ever does become a thing it'll be interesting to see how many would actually go through knowing how it works. Thanks for another fun Sunday Jen!
On DS9 he's a Chief petty officer but still a non-commissioned officer which means he still has to salute ensigns. But at least he's a top rank among the regular enlisted people who have to salute him.
Back when "Tower Records" was a store, they had a "Barclay" Collection DVD that had all of his episodes (including a famous one from another Star Trek series). I often regret not purchasing it. I occasionally look for it at "2nd & Charles" (a smallish chain store that specializes in used books, movies, and music) but with no luck yet.
I love this episode and I always wondered how I would deal with the transporter technology. Probably would never fully trust it either. Oh and it seems that the guest appearance by Christina the spider almost turned the episode into a horror show for you, Jen.😜 Great reaction as always and an awesome Star Trek sunday! 😁🖖 Thanks alot!
"We haven't seen O'Brien in a while". Since you mentioned watching DS9 I should mention that chronologically it starts in the muddle of season 6. O'Brien was in just about every season 6 episode up to then; I think it was to remind viewers that he was on the crew.
Dwight Schultz also appeared in Babylon 5 long after being Howlin' Mad Murdock. In DS9 O'Brien is Chief of Operations, in charge of Engineering aboard the station. It's not quite the same as Starship engineering, but it's certainly a promotion from Transporter Chief. DS9 was originally a Cardassian Station and a lot of time was spent early on making it talk to Federation systems. I don't like large spiders, fortunately we do not have many large ones wild in the UK.
The great show Dark Matter had an episode with transporters but instead of sending your whole body they just sent your mind which would be loaded into a clone body.
Barclay reacting to the list of symptoms reminds me so much of, well, me. And a great old Warner Brothers cartoon: The Hypo-Chondri-Cat. I genuinely believe if someone told me I was looking a little plaid I would, indeed, turn plaid.
I love Barclay. I remember the first time I ever saw him in Star Trek when I was in my teens. I thought “oh wow, it’s Howlin’ Mad Murdock. And he’s in Star Trek”. And I just knew the world would be ok! Dwight Schultz is great.
Barclay is an Officer and has duties to fulfill. If he's ordered to go on an away mission, he must. He could have turned down the assignment to the Enterprise but that would have been a terrible career move.
Jen: Computer, replicate some champagne. Computer: Replicates champagne Jen: (Drinks it) Blech! Computer, why is this so gross?! Computer: Only synthehol in the 22nd century. Jen: Nooooooooo! :P
New jacket? It looks great! Gotta love a Broccoli episode. I like the fact they don't ignore the fact transporting tends to be taken for granted. One of the reasons for my love of TNG is the attention to detail and at least try to make the science sound legit.. eg Heisenberg Compensators are absolutely a thing you would need to think about in matter materialization... this is the difference having science advisors makes. It even turns out the warp drive idea is not that far from what is being discussed in reality (the Alcubierre drive). I always look forward to when your vids drop. so much fun! thank you
One of the things I love the most about Picard is if someone comes to him with completely insane shit, 9 times out of 10 he will absolutely get the senior staff to take a serious look into it. Anyway, love this one, it's Reg's moment to shine and walk out a total hero. Hoping you're one day able to overcome your dread of our many legged friends, Jen.
@15:06 Jen : ".....now he's fine with them. Faced his fear" And now Jen Murray, YOU face your fear. (....not as successfully it seems) LOL! I didn't realize you suffered from such acute arachnophobia.
Such a fun and interesting episode. But yeah, what are the odds that something like this happened to Barclay ... the one person who hated teleporting. Love it.
I love Barkley and I love the command crew on this ship. Reg is probably the most courageous person in the fleet. No matter how scared he is, he does his job and he does it well. And even though there was plenty of reason for doubt, Cap knew his man and trusted him when it matters. An excellent crew all round.
15:30 "She won't bite." This is what EVERYONE says about their pet which is a total lie! My late cat Marble was extremely friendly, however she was still an animal and occasionally bit and scratched me. It's just a reality of pets.
It is funny that everyone overlooks the fact that the transporter is a murder machine, akin to what you see in "The Prestige". Fear of it is 100% rational.
Hey Jen! I hope you're keeping well? I love the Jacket, it looks really good on you. I hope it's comfortable? I've just watched the part two video you did before this and, of course, this video. I was surprised to see you had a slight fear of spiders. To be honest, I did laugh seeing your reaction, lol! 😂 I have a bit of a fear of lights, although I'm not sure why. Perhaps one day I'll get over it, lol! 😂 Another great reaction. Have a fantastic day, take care! ❤
I used to have extreme arachnophobia till I started watching Jumping spiders, they are soooo cute they have helped me so much with my phobia, I recommend giving it a shot Jen. Maybe start with Lucas the spider. Best of luck. I loved this episode. Also tip with spiders, they are more afraid of you.
An argument can be made that every time you beam in a transporter you are destroyed and a new copy of you that's not you is made and has your memories and thinks they are you.
Definitely gave me the FLY vibes if transportation becomes a thing i would wonder too what if i don't make it through in one piece 😲 Thankfully i am here in one piece enjoying another Next JEN Sunday . And i agreeBarclay played by Dwight Schultz is a great character and i do like the way he is relatable and reminds us of our own vulnerability . Cheers JEN Now Energize ✨
Sunday TNG with Jen is the best! I'm with you - "hook spiders" with legs half a meter long can f*%$ off. Commercial break! Edit: I used to be really afraid of spiders too, until I started watching a channel called Exotics Lair (a guy who keeps and breeds hundreds of tarantulas) and found some of them to be beautiful, like the Cobalt Blue and the Chaco Golden Knee). I still don't like finding them while working on home rehabs for work, but I'm not as paralyzed as I used to be. Just thought I'd share in case it helps someone here.
Did you notice that after season five ended the title (Superman) streak of Star Trek The Next Generation has gone away and is back to how it was in previous seasons...
O'Brien is essentially an enlisted man he is ineligible to hold a command position or be promoted so to speak. He does get a promotion in another series and becomes a chief engineer, but as far as the command structure in Starfleet he cannot be technically promoted.

Hypochondria existed before the internet. Folks would get information from words on paper, they’d keep them in stacks between durable covers. Books they called them. Lots and lots and lots of them were piled on shelves in large buildings. You'd have to go there and interact with an employee:
"Top o' the mornin' Mildred!" you'd say
"How's the family? You still renting the horse carcass in the ditch behind the blacksmith's? Anyhow, I'm here to loan out the lastest telegraphs from Siam and Prussia and am inquiring if you carry Shakespeare?"
Now Shakespeare is some mighty fine reading. Although you have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.
i'll admit, i have self diagnosed a broken small toe. granted my sister-in-law who's a nurse and another nurse agreed that i probably did.
Poor Broccoli, he's always getting the short end of the stick
Except for a 2000 IQ.
Best part of my Sunday is watching Jen react to two TNG episodes.
Barclay is one of my favorite ST characters. He's relatable
No Matter what trouble I have in my life one thing always makes me smile ...Jen and the title music to Star Trek 😁
I've wondered what it would be like hearing Barclay having a conversation with Dr. McCoy about transporters!
"That's the saddest 'energize' I've ever heard."
Definitely lol'ed at that one and totally agree.
8:55 Troi doing the Boimler walk!
(IYKYK)
5:55 The Heisenberg compensator is a fictional device in Star Trek that allows for precise measurement of a particle's position and momentum. It was designed to work around the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, which states that it's impossible to know both a particle's position and momentum with perfect accuracy.
I really enjoyed seeing your reaction to this great episode, Jen, sorry about the spider though. 🙂
Yeah, Barclay's a comforting character because he's more like what I'd be in that century. I would not be one of the cool people who has everything together. Friggin' transporters! X)
Greetings Admiral Murray 😊😊
Another Star Trek Sunday is done. Forgot about Mr.Barkley and his fear of transporters. ❤ Love your reactions as always. Live long and prosper 🖖 😊
Barclay turning into a worm...or maybe a spider...since O'Brian mentioned spiders. ;)
Or anyone who saw Star Trek The Motion Picture.
I maintain that the transporter kills you so you can count me out.
Not I. I like my atoms right where they're at.
Barclay and spiders ... this will be fun. :)
Heh.
This ep features USS Yosemite, named for one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Anybody been there? I need to go back.
It has been called "The Cathedral of Nature"!
One last comment, Jen; I just love how tense your reactions are when the situation on the ship is tense.
Technically, O’Brien’s being assigned to DS9 counts as a promotion.
True, because he's the chief engineer.
stop spoiling 😅
@ She’s already watching DS9 on Patreon, so I didn’t spoil nothing. If you followed this channel, you would already know that.
gods, it’s like being promoted to purgatory.
On DS9 he's a Chief petty officer but still a non-commissioned officer which means he still has to salute ensigns. But at least he's a top rank among the regular enlisted people who have to salute him.
The who played Barkley also played Murdock in the A-Tean Series in the 80's.
People were probably very wary getting on the first airplane or rocket, but now it feels safer for more people.
"We haven't seen O'Brien in a while".
Since you mentioned watching DS9 I should mention that chronologically it starts in the muddle of season 6. O'Brien was in just about every season 6 episode up to then; I think it was to remind viewers that he was on the crew.
kind of strange that we might even think Barclay wouldn't be taken seriously given all the development he's been thru but here we are
After this episode if you pay attention you can see Troi use Plexing during high stress situations. Good call back, she knows it works.
Barkley!! Slightly opposite of his Murdock character on The "A" Team where he is a wacky pilot. Great Reaction Jenn!! Peace 🕊️☮️♾️😎
Barclay! I love this character. Somehow, he reminds me of Bruce Dern's character "Lowell" in Silent Running (1972).
He could have turned down the assignment to the Enterprise but that would have been a terrible career move.
troi could have probably gotten him out of it but clearly thought it would be better for him if he went.
And he made every reasonable attempt to comply and eventually managed to overcome a debilitating panic attack to do so.
Technological mysteries and Barclay are an amazing combination.
I love Barclay! He's the most relatable character in Trek.
Look. Howling Mad Murdock is on Star Trek again.
Jen: Computer, replicate some champagne.
Computer: Replicates champagne
Jen: (Drinks it) Blech! Computer, why is this so gross?!
Computer: Only synthehol in the 22nd century.
Jen: Nooooooooo! :P
Come on Jen.. Barkley overcame his fear.. So you must show us that you're gonna overcome your fear of spiders.. And in that new jacket
I don't know what Barkley's problem is. Snotty beamed me twice last night and it was wonderful.
Spaceballs: The Reference!
for barkley it is transporting, for YOU it is SPIDERS 🤔 both of you did MAGNIFICENTLY! 😁 really enjoyed your reaction 👍☺
@15:06
Jen : ".....now he's fine with them. Faced his fear"
And now Jen Murray, YOU face your fear.
(....not as successfully it seems)
LOL!
I didn't realize you suffered from such acute arachnophobia.
When Barclay was talking with Counsellor Troi, I was expecting the therapy session was actually a spicy holodeck fantasy.
I love this episode, all episodes with Barclay are so muAAAAAARGHSPIDER!!!! :O :O
Such a fun and interesting episode. But yeah, what are the odds that something like this happened to Barclay ... the one person who hated teleporting. Love it.
I can't wait till 6x04😊
Did TNG intentionally do this transporter episode in order to provide some information in preparation for 6x04?
I agree with Barclay (and old Dr. Leonard McCoy), I wouldn't want my atoms scattered about the universe by the infernal transporter.
Transporter fear, managed, new fear of spiders unlocked.
I soo relate to Barclay because I have anxiety problems. I don't like spiders either so your in good company Jen!
I have a bit of a fear of lights, although I'm not sure why.
Perhaps one day I'll get over it, lol! 😂
Another great reaction.
What about peacock spiders?
I like the new jacket Jen, star trek uniforms suit you.
"That's the saddest 'energize' I've ever heard." 😂
An argument can be made that every time you beam in a transporter you are destroyed and a new copy of you that's not you is made and has your memories and thinks they are you.
Hey!
Love the channel
Can't wait to see DS9
Nice Jacket!🤓
Definitely gave me the FLY vibes if transportation becomes a thing i would wonder too what if i don't make it through in one piece 😲
Thankfully i am here in one piece enjoying another Next JEN Sunday .
And i agreeBarclay played by Dwight Schultz is a great character and i do like the way he is relatable and reminds us of our own vulnerability .
Cheers JEN
Now Energize ✨
I love your new Captain's Jacket, Jen!
