This classic game of pure negotiation has taken many forms over the years.
The first The Avalon Hill Game Co version has perhaps the widest release, but Avalon Hill Games, Inc. re-released the game in 1999, complete with a colorful new map and metal pieces. In 2008, Avalon Hill released a 50th anniversary edition with a new map and cardboard pieces representing the armies and navies.
In the game, players represent one of the seven "Great Powers of Europe" (Great Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Germany, Italy, Russia or Turkey) in the years prior to World War I. Play begins in the Spring of 1901, and players make both Spring and Autumn moves each year. There are only two kinds of military units: armies and fleets. On any given turn, each of your military units has limited options: they can move into an adjoining territory, support an allied unit in an attack on an adjoining territory, support an allied unit in defending an adjoining territory, or hold their position. Players instruct each of their units by writing a set of "orders." The outcome of each turn is determined by the rules of the game. There are no dice rolls or other elements of chance. With its incredibly simplistic movement mechanics fused to a significant negotiation element, this system is highly respected by many gamers.
You are truly a beast! You are bringing really interesting perspectives on board/card games with great production values. I'm a big fan of your series on Labyrinth, Twilight Struggle and Netrunner, and now this. Thank you for this, wish there was a way to reward you for your hard work. And heres hoping you will make some videos on the COIN-series as you have hinted at
So glad you enjoy all the different projects. We're always open to more suggestions too. Coin is definitely on the way. We started a patreon account because we've had a few requests, but to be honest, we just love doing it. Thanks for watching. What's your favorite coin game?
@@LegendaryTactics I think all the games are great (haven't tried Ghandi yet though), but the most interesting I've found to be Pendragon and Fire in the Lake. I am mostly playing Colonial Twilight with a friend because of player count, as I don't really mess with the bots or solo play
And thanks btw for making me aware of your Patreon. I don't support Patreon because of their history of censure, but if you ever get Subscribestar, etc., let me know
@@changedtoprotecttheindolen1801 good to know. Hopefully we won't have an issue with them since we're aiming for a family friendly channel. But this is all new for us, so we'll see how it goes.
@@changedtoprotecttheindolen1801 Fire in the Lake is fantastic. We're mulling over the idea of treating coin games from a narrative perspective with some history splashed in.
Fantastic behind-the-scenes look here. Love the input gathered from other players as well. And thanks for the little sprinkles of looking-smart to go with the big pie of dumb you served us at the tournament.
You guys were great. When I rewatch it now, I'm surprised that any of that worked. It really was a weird tactic.
@@LegendaryTactics You did a fantastic job of reading your neighbors and playing the whole board. That's great Diplomacy. Like you noted, being more aggressive may have backfired, and with Carnage scoring there wasn't much to gain by getting bigger, except perhaps making the board-top less of a close shave. Great work.
I have never played a game of diplomacy but it looks fun
A lot of new players have gotten into the hobby this year. You should give it a go!
There's an app called Conspiracy that's pretty easy to get into, it's diplomacy as far as I know
Hey Im England and this was very fun!
You were the biggest concern I had in the game early on.
If that isnt a compliment
An excellent analysis of an excellent game. Very well played. I think this game illustrates how important *diplomacy* is to the game (hence the name), rather than board position. I think the commentators focused too much on the tactical position of the game. But as you pointed out, "inefficient" moves in the short term can be more beneficial in the long term by building relationships and allowing others to become more sizable threats.
Are there any other videos like this on the channel? Was a really interesting breakdown and would love to check out more of them.
Hey, thanks for checking it out. The one that is closest to this would be the Battle of the Loyalists that I posted recently: ua-cam.com/video/JBE4RFgO5A4/v-deo.html&ab_channel=LegendaryTactics
This is excellent, thanks for taking the time to walk us through your thoughts! Weaving the commentators' reactions into the piece the way you did was very engaging, and I loved hearing from your opponents. Sharing a deep dive in a brief way is tough, but this one was on the money. Well done!
No problem! I really enjoyed making this video.
I love this- I got introduced to these online Diplo tournaments via the UA-cam algorithm randomly sending me in the direction of Captainmeme's excellent set of lengthy commentaries and so of course during the Media Wars commentary the uncanny resemblance of the East in both of these boards was the topic of tons of discussion!
You guys rock! Love seeing the way the human element can seem to throw any game on its head and how great players have so many different takeaways and areas of focus when commentating.
That was a fun game. We're into the second one now, but Ezio is playing instead of Captain. Somehow, I got stuck with Austria again! Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment.
@@LegendaryTactics now that one I'll HAVE to see!!!
@@laKogane If you go to backstabbr and choose "games in progress", this one is predictably called "Media Wars II". You can follow along without commentary there or wait for all the content creators to release their AARs when it's over.
@@LegendaryTactics Sweet thanks!
"these seem to be the moves of a very inexperienced player"
-words of a very experienced analyst
They are indeed very experienced - the best analysts in the game. I guess experience is relative.. I've played on and off for 32 years, but there are likely a lot of tournament players who have played many more games than me. My main goal in the game was to not appear to be a threat. Russia has a tendency to scare some players. It doesn't always work for me, but it did this time.
They had my name wrong
Don't worry, we got it right.
I am a new player and don't understand the purpose of some of the obviously invalid orders in this game, such as Turkey's order for BUL army to NAO at the beginning of the game. Please explain what I'm seeing.
That's just Turkey's way of saying that he doesn't want to antagonize Russia, Italy, or Austria. It's a nice neutral move that means his unit won't go anywhere.
I’m curious if you have ever played Axis and Allies?
Yes, we have! We have the original 1st edition from circa 1984
@@LegendaryTactics how do you like it in comparison to Diplomacy? I know they are very different games, but curious on your thoughts. I really want to make a combination of the 2, basically diplomacy with more complex war mechanics!
"Germany build fleet Kiev" 🤔
17:17:To drop a fleet in Kiev. That’s Kiel
Oops, sorry about that! It was missed in the editing process!
@@LegendaryTactics it’s fune
I can't figer out who you are playing as
I'm Russia.
yeah the tactics were pretty legendary
Erratum: "Kiel" (not 'Kiev')
Good catch
