The Cruel prince just RIPPED me out of a reading slump, it took me 4 days to finish that & the second book. As soon as my library opens I'm picking up the final I'm obsessed
I hope you love it! You should read The Stolen Heir duology next! It’s definitely very different from the original trilogy but I loved it just as much as
no book slapped SO hard, maybe acotar but i didnt love it as much. I haven't read vivid witty books with rich plot and characters like these since *sigh*
re-reading nostalgic books is so real! after only reading a handful of books over the course of maybe 5 years, i reread the percy jackson series and, oh boy did it remind me how much fun reading is. i’ve now read about 120 books in the span of nearly 2 years after going through such a major slump for a long time.
T. Kingfisher does a lot of great retellings of fairy tales! I highly recommend The Seventh Bride (Bluebeard retelling) and Bryony and Roses (Beauty and the Beast retelling). I also recommend literally everything else she writes, she's one of my absolute favorite authors. And the Paladin books are so damn good I'm planning on re-purchasing them so I can have physical copies. My childhood nostalgia reads are The Perilous Gard by Elizabeth Marie Pope, The Moorchild by Eloise Jarvis McGraw, Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech, and Something's Rotten in the State of Maryland by Laura A. Sonnenmark. (I haven't actually read the last two in a long time, but they were books I would routinely reread, just trying to recapture those feelings I had the first time I read them.)
Reading Paladin's Grace for the first time felt like I was hit with pure serotonin. 😊 I absolutely love this book and keep rereading it every year. 🤸♀
I love re-reading books I loved as a kid or teen. Sometimes it’s harder with a more mature mind, but I still remember the love I had for them and it’s still a good time.
First of all the thumbnail deserves a shoutout. I love it, it's so silly yet so good.I myself have been in a book slump for over a year now and it's the most devestating thing especially when you love reading so much. I have tried everything but nothing works. I haven't been able to connect with any book. Hope this year I can get over it 🙈
If you love The Princess Bride (film), you need to read Cary Elwes's nonfiction book "As You Wish" about the production of the movie! It got me out of a reading slump. The audiobook is fantastic and includes interviews with much of the cast & crew. It's relatively short and Cary Elwes narrates and has such a fantastic voice to listen to (he does some impressions too). It will make you just fall in love all over again with The Princess Bride.
It's definitely that connection that is my main reason for slumps. I almost go through a reading speed dating to try and find one that grabs me, and sometimes that takes a LONG time, which can be frustrating. I also know immediately if it's a connection too lol. My remedy is usually switching to my other reading love, graphic novels. If that doesn't work, I take a break until I miss having a book next to me all the time, lol. Adrienne Young was one of my best finds last year, I ate up her entire catalog 😍. Definitely added some from your recs here, especially the short section. Those help a lot, too, less pressure in a way because even if you hate it, you really didn't waste any time.
nostalgia reads are my favourite!! percy jackson has *catapulted* me out of plenty of reading slumps, it just perfectly sums up the joy of reading I've carried in my heart since childhood
I finished Blood over Bright Haven 30 mins ago before watching your video and I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN. I had to work and took it with me to read the last pages directly after work in the park next our office building. I haven‘t read a book that gripping in a long time
The throne in the dark was such a delight, even thinking back makes me smile again. It lets you let the things be just how they are😅 and enjoy the ride with all the sensible nonsense going on inside. I could say many things but it really was just one bubble of sunshine. Might could be a medical prescription against feeling blue😄
i experience reading slumps pretty similarly, but i’ve found that being a college student also contributes to a slump. like i’m currently reading amazing books for my literature courses (like the bell jar and handmaids tale) but after doing those assigned readings i just. don’t want to read for pleasure anymore
I read Alone with You in the Ether and Your Blood My Bones because of your recs, and i love them both so much! They help me in my reading slump so thank you ❤
The fact that I'm reading The Princess Bride for the first time rn (and have just bought Annihilation for it to be my next read!!) And then seeing them here was hilarious.
I've set my reading goal to a lower number this year because I want to tacle the bigger books in my tbr! Usually a goofy, dumb, easy to read romance gets me out of a slump! I find I get in a slump if I read to much of the same genre back to back, so I like to vary.
Almost teared up at the My Father's Dragon mention. I love revisiting books from my childhood - Ella Enchanted, Matilda Bone, The Midwife's Apprentice, A Series Of Unfortunate Events, The Cat Who Wished To Be A Man, Esperanza Rising, and the Unicorns of Balinor series to name some of my favorites
I loved the lighting, it was a vibe honestly! And I’m jealous of the snow, hope to see it some day, especially after experiencing the lovely summer in Seoul last year haha. As for slumps, these were absolutely amazing recommendations, thank you so much! Often I fall into slumps either because, like you said, mental fatigue. Forcing myself to read a book that I know I should like but it’s not the right time. Or (and this is most often my case) reading several mediocre books back to back. It’s good to read mid books sometimes, I enjoy 3 stars but if they’re all back to back for several books, I find I lose steam/the motivation to keep reading. And it’s kind of funny (see: not) because I do this to myself subconsciously. Like I’m saving books I think I’ll adore (for when, who knows?) and pick up meh books instead. Working on that this year and so far so good! Thanks again!!
I LOOOVVVEEDD the Paladins series, they were all so good and made me laugh. I loved that the characters were older, I think I finished them in a week I couldn’t get enough!
I was in a pretty big reading slump, it`s usually when my mental health is declining, it doesn`t klick with me or I am reading something more complex and I don`t feel like it. I usually get out with short stories or light romance. Now I track what I read at goodreads. I do set myself a goal of one book a month, because I feel, that that is really achievable. I do feel slightly pressured at the end of the year, if I don`t find the time or motivation. But usually if I just start and read short stories I get so into it, that at the beginning of the next year I read much more than anticipated. This year I already read ten books in January. And currently I am already reading three books. Phases of Reading and slumps are coming and going like waves for me. At the moment I am reading A magic steeped in Poison, The square of Sevens and Foucault’s Pendulum
I read thornhedge earlier this month per your recommendation. Loved it! T Kingfisher is becoming my favorite author easily. In the last year have read 7 of hers!
The salt grows heavy by Cassandra Khaw is short and so good. It’s beautifully written with the perfect blend of horror vibes, a wildly imaginative world and a love story.
Sometimes I will purposefully set aside books/series with synopses that are so perfect for me so that I have them when I hit a reading slump. I did this with The Raven Cycle for over a year, then finally read it in an awful slump and have been obsessed since. Currently am saving The Little Thieves in the same way.
These are such good tips. I’m pretty sure I’ve done the “read a book you’ve seen the adaptation of” before and it totally works. Also I read the Throne in the Dark series last year, possibly on your rec, and it had me giggling and kicking my feet the whole time. Then later that year after being in a total slump for about six months I saw there were two spinoff books I’d missed and it was so easy to pick them up and get right back into reading. Also I knew you were talking about Little Thieves before you said it because I too have been waiting for this year to read it! For what puts me in a slump: ADHD just deciding we don’t read books anymore, or mental health things; I read almost nothing for half of last year because I lost my fur baby and couldn’t do much more than grieve.
this is too early even for me. I think My Lady Jane is a VERY fun book to get out of a slump.. if you’re into a fun whimsy romance of a girl and a horse (or a man who can turn into a horse) It’s a very stable relationship overall
I knew you were going to say Half a Soul right before you did! 😂 but I completely agree, wow that short little book packed such a punch for me. I still think about it all the time 🥰
east of eden is my favorite book of all time. in fact I go back to it when I'm slumpy. I never reread, but I have read it at least 10 times. it is perfection. I cannot tell you how much it means to me. It is absolutely everything to me.
Dark rise trilogy recently got me out of a slump and now I'm onto blood over bright haven! very exited to be back reading again! also your skin is glowing in this..skincare routine when
I had a slump recently - I had a magnetic attraction to mid books and read like five in a row, with the expected result. How I got out was similar to a couple of the things you suggested. Rereads for sure - including one from adulthood - and shorter reads. Additional suggestions for shorties are Singing Hills Cycle by Nghi Vo, and Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers. Another thing that's helped (and was suggested by an online friend) is "coffee table" books, books with minimal text and lots of pictures. Head to the library, and grab one with a topic that interests you. Ta-da! An easy completion. Manga and graphic novels are also fun, quick reads, though i understand not everyone enjoys those.
January was a rough reading month. DNF'd more than I finished. Short story collections, romcoms, and reading some things on Substack help me get out of slumps or when I am feeling jaded after dnf'ing books back to back. Love the idea of reading retellings and the book versions of movies/shows!
I just read 'The Catcher in the Rye', and it's one of the best books I've read so far this year. I know that's not saying much, but it can definitely bring someone out of a reading slump.
This video showed up when I needed it most! I've been on a dnf spree for new books - so far for this year I've only been able finish re-reads. I've got Five Broken Blades on my holds list after the last video so I'm hoping that'll break me out of my slump
Watching this video got me out of bed and actually start my day cause it’s lunar new year in my country right now and all my body craves all day is the bed 😂 ur voice acts as a bgm for me to finally get up at 3pm n get ready to maybe head out for food or coffee, hope that’s an adequate compliment 😂
I love how many retellings you include. Retellings are auto-reads for me. I just read The Book of Light by Morgan Reilly which is a retelling of Rapunzel, and it was so good.
reading slumps to me is when i wanna read and just cant, like nothing's good, nothing's interesting. i started my internship as a kid's teacher this week and every book feels too heavy or too mind consuming to absorb. i need something stupidly easy going
I'm currently listening to the audiobook of Throne in the Dark and it's SO FUNNY. I really appreciate the narrators choices of accents for certain characters lol
thank you for this!! had a tragedy happen a couple weeks ago and i've been struggling to read heavier, "adult" topics in books. i was doing a challenge of reading a series from my childhood in chronological order (there's a TON of books), so i might do that again and stop forcing myself to "adult and read books for my age group". if a book aimed for people at least a decade younger than me is what gets me back into reading, so be it
I found that I don't often get reading slumps if I mix up my genres on a regular basis. So instead of reading a lot of fantasys back-to-back, I will break up a series by reading a thriller or romance in between. Just keeps things fresh for me.
I just watched your ACOTAR summary from 2 years ago. You mentioned your neighbors drilling in that video too. It was so long ago, but your neighbors always be drilling. Haha 😂
Right now, I am reading Reckless by Lauren Roberts and Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan. I am constantly trying to get a job (in my 20s) and still living with my parents. The everyday drama feels like I just want to be free and get some time away such as my close friends or a job.
i like to read books written by people i already like for other reasons, in fact up until recently that was the only thing that could get me to buy a book. this ends up mostly being memoirs, or novels by youtubers (the Green brothers/Lindsay Ellis) so idk if it also has to do with the fact that i can clearly hear their voice in my head? but recently i decided i really wanted to start reading again, and i ended up picking acotar because of your videos! like you mentioned about retellings/books-turned-movies, it was so much easier to get through because i could just be like “yep this is what Cari said would happen!”
Rereading my favourites has helped me out of a reading slump so much 😊 but eventually I ended up in one again shortly after, where manga has helped me out so much as I still wanted to read 😅
I'm currently reading Howl's Moving Castle as I only first saw the film last year. The book is so lovely and just allows me to linger in those same feelings I had when watching the movie. Obviously it's targeted at a younger audience but I find the writing still very entertaining as an adult. I can only hear Calcifer as Billy Crystal, but I'm not mad about it 😂
Not me immediately adding some of these book recs to my kindle because I’m in a slump and trust your judgment better than my own. Also the vibes are immaculate. Cozy night with snow and tea? 💋👌🏻
Reading childhood favorites help me too, for getting out of slumps. Along came a Dog by Meindert DeJong and anything by Elizabeth Enright. Think i will go reread them now. 👍📚🤗❤️
I'm on a no buy book ban this year in attempt to force me to read through my bookshelf, but that doesn't stop me from adding half these recs to my save-for-later-pile. Library books are still allowed! 😁 Six Crimson Cranes helped me out of a slump last year and T.Kingfisher is a new favorite author of mine.
I was feeling that feeling of getting into a reading slump, you know, when you realize that if the next book you pick will make you start dnfing everything that isn’t “just right”? So I picked up T. Kingfisher’s “the Clockwork Boys” and immediately after, “Wonder Engine”. Immaculate. 5 starts. All I ever wanted. Reading slump averted 🙌🏼 I tend to save her books for such occasions because I love her so much! Although the horror ones I have to be a little bit more careful about, because those images will FREAKING STICK WITH ME for a long ass time 😳
I followed your rec a few weeks ago about The Hollow And The Haunted and I thank you for it: it was really good! I just hope it doesn't end like Romeo and Juliet at some point... But yeah, it ended being just the escapism I needed. Also, glad you warned us about the fact that there'd be no ending and that we'd have to wait for the sequel... I understand why now there are so many series, but it still annoys me ah ah!
The dark evening filming is ACTUALLY a MOOD! Love it 😍
Thank god hahha it made for an ugly thumbnail but oh well!!!
@@caricanreadlol i actually love the thumbnail😂
@@caricanread I love the thumbnail... I clicked on it SO FAST!!! 😂
I agree! Feels cozy!
that magic eye illusion comparison is so real I’ve never been able to describe not being able to get into a book even though I know I want to read 😭
Right?!!!
Oh yes!!! That was indeed a great analogy!
I was going to comment the same thing. I’ve never had someone so closely describe my experience of reading a good book!!
The Cruel prince just RIPPED me out of a reading slump, it took me 4 days to finish that & the second book. As soon as my library opens I'm picking up the final I'm obsessed
Here to say that I know that feeling, can relate and am really happy for you, stranger on the internet🎉
That trilogy is what got me back into reading for fun a few years ago, after a long drought due to college and grad school. So fun!
I hope you love it! You should read The Stolen Heir duology next! It’s definitely very different from the original trilogy but I loved it just as much as

Reading Paladin's Grace for the first time felt like I was hit with pure serotonin. 😊 I absolutely love this book and keep rereading it every year. 🤸♀
Couldn't agree more. Not in a reading slump, but when I do, I find shorter books or rereads of former favorites to help break out.
I love re-reading books I loved as a kid or teen. Sometimes it’s harder with a more mature mind, but I still remember the love I had for them and it’s still a good time.

Literally such a profound book!
How did you know that I was in a reading slump? This came at the perfect time!!

I LOVE Daughter of the Forest!!! So glad it’s getting its flowers from Cari!
The monk and robot duo healed me and got me out of a book slump. Calm and kind and short 😊
dear america books being mentioned made my day, nobody ever knows what i'm talking about when i bring them up 😭

It’s a very stable relationship overall
Omg yes AND bonus of there being a tv show 😂😂
I love the Saint of Steel books so much. Already read them 3 times. Don't usually like romance, but I'm absolutely obsessed with this ❤

I just watched your ACOTAR summary from 2 years ago. You mentioned your neighbors drilling in that video too. It was so long ago, but your neighbors always be drilling. Haha 😂
Starting a Memory Called Empire tonight thanks to your rec!! Hoping it gets me out of this post-Onyx-Storm slump 🥲
While watching the video comments: Annihilation was sooooo creepy! I was surprised by how much it scared me!
the Giver is one of my FAVORITE books. The full quartet is amazing, I can't read the Giver without the other three anymore
i get out of my reading slumps by watching your rec videos! and your first tip lol i reread percy jackson almost every time a slump hits
Right now, I am reading Reckless by Lauren Roberts and Archer’s Voice by Mia Sheridan. I am constantly trying to get a job (in my 20s) and still living with my parents. The everyday drama feels like I just want to be free and get some time away such as my close friends or a job.
I honestly vastly prefer the dark evening filming, to the bright daytime filming. It feels so cozy!
i like to read books written by people i already like for other reasons, in fact up until recently that was the only thing that could get me to buy a book. this ends up mostly being memoirs, or novels by youtubers (the Green brothers/Lindsay Ellis) so idk if it also has to do with the fact that i can clearly hear their voice in my head? but recently i decided i really wanted to start reading again, and i ended up picking acotar because of your videos! like you mentioned about retellings/books-turned-movies, it was so much easier to get through because i could just be like “yep this is what Cari said would happen!”
Rereading my favourites has helped me out of a reading slump so much 😊 but eventually I ended up in one again shortly after, where manga has helped me out so much as I still wanted to read 😅
I just read Foster and IMMEDIATELY thought of it for the short book category!! So good
The Giver is the book that started my love for reading back in grade 4!!!!
THE GIVER AND ITS SEQUELS R SOOO BOMB... even in 5th grade i realized this was peak but i didn't reallyy grasp it until later
Love the new background, great content Cari
you are saving my life with this video because i´m currently in a reading slump 💖
I'm currently reading Howl's Moving Castle as I only first saw the film last year. The book is so lovely and just allows me to linger in those same feelings I had when watching the movie. Obviously it's targeted at a younger audience but I find the writing still very entertaining as an adult. I can only hear Calcifer as Billy Crystal, but I'm not mad about it 😂
omg this setting is so much cooler whaaat
I love living almost in the same time zone!
Not me immediately adding some of these book recs to my kindle because I’m in a slump and trust your judgment better than my own.
Also the vibes are immaculate. Cozy night with snow and tea? 💋👌🏻
going crazy with all of your sci fi recommendations I want to read ALL OF THEM ahahaha
Reading childhood favorites help me too, for getting out of slumps. Along came a Dog by Meindert DeJong and anything by Elizabeth Enright. Think i will go reread them now. 👍📚🤗❤️
thank you caricakessss just what I needed
I'm on a no buy book ban this year in attempt to force me to read through my bookshelf, but that doesn't stop me from adding half these recs to my save-for-later-pile. Library books are still allowed! 😁 Six Crimson Cranes helped me out of a slump last year and T.Kingfisher is a new favorite author of mine.
AHHH my high school English teacher wrote the Charm Offensive. Was so shocked when I saw her name at the book shop
Reading slump averted 🙌🏼
I tend to save her books for such occasions because I love her so much! Although the horror ones I have to be a little bit more careful about, because those images will FREAKING STICK WITH ME for a long ass time 😳
love the thumbnail it is not the usual but i love it it's fun 😂❤
so many good recs!
36:31 GIRL!! 😂 omg this was one of my required readings in university. I majored in anthropology with a focus on forensics.
Omg! I absolutely loved Slade House but I never hear people talking about it! Its so trippy, I read it in one sitting
More books to my TBR it goes…would love to see your most anticipated 2025 releases Cari 😍
I adore t Kingfisher and the murderbot diaries and listen to the audiobooks repeatedly when I'm sad or overwhelmed or in a slump
