The Beauty of Blueing Raw Steel - Vintage 96 Voodoo Hoodoo Resto-mod Build

- Thank you to Paul Components (@PaulComponentEngineering), Chris King (@chriskingbuzz) and Oury Grips for the awesome purple bits to adorn what I have to say is my favorite frame customization I have done so far. I love the effect the super blue has on the raw steel frame, even with my amateur brazing on the disk brake mount. For similar awesome parts check out my friends below:

Never mind all these “dream build” channels, you are building the sickest bikes on UA-cam.
Still though.. i would choose to put full kit (front + rear) Magura MT7 +pro 4 pistons hydraulic brakes on it to be even more Epic.. otherwise this bike turn out fantastic indeed ! ;0)
That is my exact dream frame.... slightly different finish but damn close.
This deffinatly qualifies as dream build
I said to myself out loud, "that's siick", multiple times throughout the video. Perfect word for his work.
dream builds about bolting exotic expensive parts together, never impressed me. but old shovel is not only really building but puts spirit in it
Let’s just hope you’ve created a new era of tech-vids without annoying music but just the art of adding less...
What a clean and solid ride!!😍
I love the fact that 96 is now vintage, god I’m old.😂😂👍🏻🇬🇧
I still ride my bike from '96, it's even been my regular bike for the past 12 months or so while I don't have anything better to use instead. Santa Cruz Heckler, performs like a boss.
@Giuliano Skywalker I'm also the first to admit how awful 90's bikes can be though. I've ridden a variety. Klein Mantra, GT LTS, a variety of hardtails. For the most part they force you to ride slow and grip tight.
I've probably left the comment on at least a dozen bike restoration videos from various UA-camrs that they should do a blued bike frame. Finally someone did it.
Happy to serve
This is pure ASMR! Thank you for refraining from using annoying background music or useless babbling. Highly appreciated!
It's such a cool idea to use gun bluing to color a bike! Such a neat affect, it really gives it a deep, smooth gun metal look, which is gorgeous against the shiny steel of the lettering and symbols. Absolutely gorgeous build like always!
Unfortunately cold bluing like this provides only minimal resistance to wear and rust. Usually only used to touch up small areas of guns.
@@gustavmeyrink_2.0 I was just wondering about that. Thanks for answering my question
@@gustavmeyrink_2.0 No one ever shows what it looks like after 6 months of riding.
@@gustavmeyrink_2.0 isn't the clear coat the one that will be protecting from rusting?
@@gustavmeyrink_2.0 CLEAR COAT !
You have inspired me to build myself a touring bike during the winter using parts that I have and an old urban Trek frame from roughly 2015 or 2016.... Thank you for being creative and inspiring.
Much respected from the UK.
Wow, just about brought a tear to my eye. Very well done!
I love seeing how much life you can put into a bike with some time and effort.
And mostly a shit ton of money if you're going with the same components..
@@Emphaphis worth it
@@Emphaphis The unfortunate fact revolving around bike components. At least for broke people like me.
@@Emphaphis Dude I just spilt chocolate milk on me because of how true this comment is. At least we can watch people do bike builds like this.
you mean into a frame
everything else is new
Love, love, love this build. Your level of work is increasing exponentially and I can't wait to see what you have in the future.
This bike is just beautiful. You are a true artist. Your taste when combining everything together is excellent
Having bought my first mt bike in '89 your video really brought back good memories from the mid 90's of wrenching away on my steel hardtails of that era. Also, that is a nice bit of filmmaking to show the magic of pumping life into that old beauty, it really got the nostalgia wave going for me.
Awesome
I think this is called "taking it to a whole new level".
Hallo i am from singapore. After seeing your videos i was inspired and started restoring old bikes . Giving this old nostalgic bikes new life those during my childhood give me great pleasure . Also seeing my kids ride the bikes i restored made me very happy. Really hoping to see more of your upcoming videos.
Awesome awesome awesomeness
@@oldshovel can u give me links to order the oury grips n spray cans so i can sell them in sg
Paul's components and old school RaceFace cranks! SWEET!!!
l ve seen alot of bike builds over the years but you JUST TOOK IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL !! THIS IS AN AWESOME BUILD !!!
I just shake my head at the end, the creativity and craftsmanship is unreal. Love the steel’d blue. The only gripe I have is please don’t ever skip that outro, I love it, and it gives a great motto to live life by. 👍🏻 Sick build friend.
I concur! I look forward to hearing his thoughts at the end of the video, especially reminding us to give old things new life.
As an ardent viewer of his videos,I always hope to hear his advice to restore bikes where possible. His words alone are akin to a movement.

Agree! Not the same without the commentary at the end.
I admire what you do to old things especially recreating old mtb frames and making it Road worthy again. Many thanks to your channel. It keeps me inspired. Thanks!
Awesome thanks
Shivers and a tear, so relaxing to watch. Your builds are awesome. I’d love to own a retro with a modern twist mtb!
I love how you retro these bikes to disc. I have a collection of vintage mountain bikes I build, swap and rebuild components among my bikes. Whatever is compatible. Watching your videos is really mind blowing.
A masterpiece, as usual 💪. I'm on my first restoration/build and you're a motivation for me, big big thank you for tips and inspiration. Greetings from France 🙏
Wow. This is perhaps my new favorite of your builds. The blueing of the frame is such an interesting touch. I love how it still gives a hint to all the love that went into the bike when you look closely.
Thanks
"THIS IS BEAUTIFUL! WHAT IS THIS??? VELVET???"
And seriously... man this is sick! You keep going up to the next level with every single project on this channel! Again - this is beautiful!
Thanks 🙏

I worked in a bikeshop for 5 years growing up. I can say that when assembling the headset, bearing race, and cutting the fork I could tell when was happening just by the sounds alone. Thank you @oldshovel.
Awesome
I've been watching you for years. Now its my dream to own an Old Shovel Custom one day. That would be the pinnacle of my bike owning.
First time I seen one of these was at the Norba National round#1 1996. Masterful craftsmanship
Old Shovel: Installs brand new Paul, King, Raceface purple ano parts
Also Old Shovel: electrical tubeless tape
And the cheapest handlebars and seat available. With how much everything else costs I imagine those were the cuts that had to be made. When I do bikes like this I keep in mind how much anyone would actually pay in the end vs the cost to build. This one would most likely loose money as in my area no one would pay anymore than $400 for it.
@@crewkatie9875 Oh come on. I don't even know what size it is, I'm a complete random, and I'd pay shipping and 1000 bones all day. At least! This thing is dopeee
@crew’s customs cheapest saddle those things are like £100+ I’d give my left bollock for one
But why mech disc?

AWESOME!
I love steel frame bikes, old and new.
It never would occurred to me to blue the frame, so beautiful! That is really really cool!
Fantastic build, loving the colours as always great production. all the best and keep up the good work Andy
Thanks Andy!
Absolute favorite bike build I’ve seen to date. You put everything into this, your anodized parts look incredible matched up with it all!
Thanks
I locked the room, paced my breathing, and concentrated on watching this... and.. I found my inner peace that I needed... 🙏🏼
These are my favorite. Taking an older bike, complete makeover and updated. Bet that thing is a blast on the trails.
This is my favourite Old Shovel build yet! It’s obvious how much preparation went into this and your choice of parts (and those colours) was inspired. I’m so glad you attached those disc brake cable stops to the frame. My only criticism of your previous Kona Explosif build was the use of cable ties (and also when you bashed the headset cups into frame with a mallet 😂).
Keep up the good work! Such a pleasure to watch!
I still love, and ride, my '99 VooDoo HooDoo AL. Thanks for reminding me of that fact, because I really need to remember that when I see all these $4k to $12k bike vids today.
this is so rad!! i love raw steel looks and i have always wondered about bluing! it looks fantastic! i love how you stickered it for a mask. great work!
The blued frame looks soooo good! Interesting. Never seen that before. What a beauty!
Thanks
Does blueing an old road frame that is blazed could make it weaker at the bracket that join the tubes? Excellent bike and agree with other comments that the creativity is top notch.
the best way to start my sunday!!! cheers from argentina!!!
I'm a sucker for purple anodising, absolutely love this! Looks _so_ clean! Beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful bike restoration!!! Amazing work like always
As a person who has never liked purple, this video has single handedly changed my feelings on purple forever! This bike is incredibly awesome! Next level is an understatement! As another UA-camr would say, "this bike is the DREAM!!!" I figured it was going to turn out pretty good, but, it far surpassed all of my expectations! This is double cool!!!
Lol awesome. “Today is going to be epic!”
@@oldshovel ,perfect!!!!! That comment is well good!
beautiful assembly, congratulations on good taste.
I went through most of your videos and you've inspired me to pick up and restore an older bike. Hopefully I can make it as nice as you've made yours. Love the videos and your channel! Happy Holidays!
Simply stunning. Plus it has inspired me to blue my Dawes Ultra Galaxy.
You never cease to amaze me with your builds. I love the bluing. I am curious to see how it wears. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. I’m curious too. I hope it holds up too.
@@oldshovel you the best
This is one "no expenses spared" kinda build, holy crap. Paul levers, chris king headset, wolf tooth seat clamp... I wish I could afford this stuff LOL
they sponsor him, so he gets all the stuff and tools for free... and in return they get forever advertisement from his videos (not a bad investment).. I think OURY grips has been with him forever and Park Tools sign with him as well... I do like his videos and Yes.. I own OURY Grips and Park Tools.. seeing how proficient they are.. Oury grips tend to get really sticky though in time
Except the bars and seat I agree.
@@kh17150 Oury grips are sticky brand new out of the blister pack haha. I never thought to put coins in the ends of the bars. I was just starring at one of mine the other day and thinking of something to put on the bar end after I had to remove it to install a new BOX brake perch/lever. For others that don't know, they are really soft, so its easy to poke a hole in them at the ends.
That was 20 mins on UA-cam that I really enjoyed. So much talent and style. And thanks for the sound! The edit was amazing.
Really nice! Love seeing old bikes made modern with a 1X and a wide range cassette, looks so much cleaner. nice parts too.
Are we seeing a recurring 90s theme with purple anodized components?
Also,as ever, the end result of this (re)build renders me speechless.
The video was suggested by UA-cam to me (never seen your videos before). I must say - absolutely great work on this bike. The finish of this frame with the purple bits added is absolutely phenomenal! Really great looking bike :)
Thanks and welcome to the channel.
That is absolutely gorgeous. Stripping down an old western flyer myself that I also want to blue the frame. Keep doing what you're doing. These are great how too's.
I've watched most of your bills and this one is by far my favorite. Beautiful beautiful work.
Great looking build! I really miss you explaining the different choices or the process. That is something I really liked about your videos.
Noted. I had commentary I was going to use but it just felt soooo awesome without it on this beauty.
Absolutely beautiful 😍 You are a huge inspiration to me, sir! About to start on my 3rd build. . . .
Awesome
My favorite build so far.
Big fan of steel MTB. Love the framework, the simple but awesome paintjob, the color combo (have the same black, Gray, purple scheme on mine !) and the parts are awesome
Keep it up
Love from France
Excellent work mate. A pleasure to watch someone who knows what he’s doing and using quality parts. 👍🇦🇺
i would much prefer to buy one of your builds over a new bike. Something about it being brought back to life and the experience the frame carries as well as the experience you have as a builder is very dope. Even more so now that i will be actively avoiding public transit in the city do to my immunocompromised state. All that to say that i love your channel and builds!
Thanks
This is made with curiosity and enthusiasm, thus making it art!
Every build
Another outstanding video from my bikes era. Flashbacks to a TI-Voodoo I helped build out for a friend. Such a fantastic company that didn't seem to make it to through the millennium. Would love to see that bike on a ride video. Best...
Nice attention to detail, thanks for the change as bar ends idea, awesome classic stuff! Cold Blue looks a treat too! Awesome stuff
I'd love to watch him restoring FS Bikes like: GT RTS/LTS, Kona Stab, Manitou FS, San Andreas Mountaincycle, etc.
Oooh yes!
Especially the GT RS OR LTS
@Steve Crump... He has a resto video on a GT, triple triangle frame, that one also came out 🔥.
@@rqteqobzrvr3592 Thanks. Yes i saw that one....👋 God bless.🙋
Beautiful! I have a jealous Cinder Cone in the basement! Keep them coming.
Awesome
ive watched this film several times now i just love this bike a dream machine very inspirational
I love watching your builds.
Over the time I’ve been watching them and seen how your technique and craft has evolved, your attention to detail has been fine tuned and the finished bikes are becoming functioning art pieces.
But the bottom line is still to give old things new life - something I take away and try to do with the bikes I build.
Keep doing what you do: it’s wonderful.
👍🏼
Thanks
I wish Chris King and Paul Components parts showed up at my doorstep, sigh. That bike needs to be ridden but maybe add a brace between chain stay and seat stay as that new disc brake mount is gonna need it.
It'll probably flex a little, but the frame will be fine.
Just a joy to watch and your artistry is sublime! Thank you!
By far my favourite build you’ve completed!!! Now I want to find my own Hoodoo Frame and do this! Keep it up
Out done yrself on this one great work!!
Thanks
Can’t wait to build my response elite
My favorite yet. I LOVE the gunmetal blueing technique. And you make it look so easy! I typically don't even like the color purple, but this bike is sick. Great job.
I enjoyed that immensely. Awesome attention to detail. That bike is so clean. It's perfect. 👍☮️🌞🚲
I would love to see little footage of you riding the bike after the finished build.
Increible trabajo! Mis respetos.
Man that bike turned out beautifully i wish i had that bike, it really is gorgeous and the disc brake mount welded on and all of the purple touches and the frame color all come together so good i really think the bike has found a good home and is in good hands!!
Been a hardtail rider since the 90’s. Good for all around every day bike. Anyways you build the sickest hardtails, love your channel.
Thanks
I can say I have never wanted one of your builds more than this one 10/10 beautiful work!!
great job, dude!!! really love it,just wish you woulda TIG welded that rear brake set up ,but still love your work!!!Im getting ready to do same thing with old tequsta.
I didn't know my father well. But, he always had a chevy. I remember when I was a kid seeing how he'd look at a restored camaro or vette. I'm not much into cars. That was my father's game. I have a beat up truck that I use when needed but mostly just like to ride bikes. I think, looking at this, I can understand what he was feeling at those times.
This might be my favorite one you have done so far!! So my 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Mine too
Cool vid. Only tip i have is when using the derailleur hanger tool, always use the wheels valve as the test for reference. If you just spin the tool around with the wheel stationary, the tool can pick up a false-hit if the wheel is out of true at all
Who are the sad people that gave this a thumbs down, I think they need a hug
I gave you a thumbs down to try and get a free hug... lol!!
🤗
people that were wondering if he used electrical tape as tubeless tape and then proceeded to not hear the pop when he filled it with air.
People who realize the frame prep for bluing is half-assed, the bluing itself is poor, the brake boss on the rear looks like crap, the anodising on the stem and cranks are poorly done, and drilling holes in the frame is a health risk.
Wow the anger do you need 3 hugs, he's just an awesome guy who doesn't claim to be a master frame restorer , he's just trying new things.
This video is so satisfying.
Absolutely sick build!!! Love how this turned out!!!
This is a great looking bike. I wish my local bike shop was able to get older bikes like this. I'd love to do one of these.
Never knew that the derailleur hanger extender existed. Oh the possibilities
Is that the red piece he installed? Is that just to give the derailleur more travel to use the new 1x10 setup?
I love this , all the bikes I ever had is fully custom 🔥💯
Awesome
Retro bikes are the way to go. Have a Merida Redskins and I love it so much. Thanks for sharing your builds. Ciao din Romania.
I really want this bike it’s so clean and fresh, wish I could buy it!! Awesome job man
perfect build mate ,i would love to see a steel gravel bike with raw silver steel frame and gold accents ,just an idea
Gold would be cool.
Paul components are so rad. They are a customer of mine, so if you bought those parts, in a round about way you helped support my family. :)
nice job on the build and video!
The folks at Paul’s are awesome and I am happy to help support great people and families.
Brilliant, old bikes brought back to life with some real world engineering know how. Love it.
Your videos are like therapy to me.
I would love to see a retro specialized build in a voltage bule and black
I like how you take an old frame and upgrade it
Loving this channel stumbled upon it while looking for MTB information as just started getting back to the hobby to try and claim back some of my fitness now 40 and desperately felt the need to do something about it just watched the build with your son awesome video, and what a build wish your son well in the future and looking forward to more content already 👍
amazing, inspires me to learn more and more about bike mechanics
I love it when you do these resto mods... It truly is "giving old things, new life"
This has nothing to do with giving old things new life. All these components are brand new. The only old thing is the frame.
@@Emphaphis exactly... He's given the "old frame" new life by updating it with new parts... So it has EVERYTHING to do with it...
@@Lofty2006 Well it would be "giving old thing new life" then wouldnt it?
