Elster originally died before she could fulfill her promise, and the last bits of her brain keep pushing her through a cycle of fighting through literal hell so that she could fulfill her promise to kill her lover. Adler is a bit of her brain trying to tell her to stop trying, since every loop destroys more of the world around her (in reality it’s the slow process of her brain dying) Adler just wants Elster to die so that this hell they’re all stuck in can be over. This cycle going on in Lester’s head only ends once she can “fulfill” her promise in her mind, and correct her biggest mistake in life (letting Alina die a slow death drifting in space) by choking her, no matter how difficult it was. There isn't one specific answer to anything in this game, really. We can only try to derive our own understanding of each ending. Personally, I think of the whole experience as Ariane's nightmare manifesting itself in real world because of all the pain she goes through due to Penrose falling apart and her not being able to pass away for some reason. With that, the endings show us different points inside one big cycle this game revolves around. Leave ending is probably the first Elster in a loop, unable to fulfill her promise, thus making the nightmare repeat itself. Memory ending is Ariane forgetting about herself and Elster, thus leaving the Elster in armor next to cryostasis, to be later on ripped apart by the next one in a cycle. Where first Elster in armor came from in the cycle doesn't matter, as in the end, time in the game constantly bends and twists. Promise ending is, in my opinion, the definitive end of the loop. Elster at last kills Ariane, fulfilling her promise and bringing her suffering to the end - something she wasn't able to do in a real world. I don't think it's simply a part of the loop, simply because there is a finality to this ending unlike with the others. Firstly - the messages flashing on the screen are straight forward and in english, as if to say that there is nothing here to hide from us. Secondly, it's the only ending where Elster's promise gets fulfilled, which is the most important thing to her, second only to Ariane herself. Lastly, a countdown reaches zero, symbolising that this whole nightmare came to a close.
The history is based around a loop of events, it might be real since the game hints to some eldritch things going on + you loot a corpse that looks just like you do in the ending meaning it might be real oooor it might be just your replika brain being all unstable making you relive some twisted memories, this is also hinted by a lot of insistence on replikas becoming unstable and the fact that everything is really weird and psychological. Either way in the "memory" ending you don't close the loop and that means all the horror will just repeat, maybe it will become even worse since there is also an insistence that each time the "loop" repeats it becomes worse.

Got memory ending and I looked at what the requirements were for all the endings and it said I practically speedran it... I didnt... only thing I did was avoid most enemies
Since this is an ending compilation anyway, it's not spoiler to mention this. Each of these endings aside from the secret and fake one are all very much depressing, might be more depressing than the one from Silent Hill 2 or Spec Ops The Line. Reading Ariane's notes regarding her mental state, how she is expected to die in failure, and then her "promise" was despair inducing. Whereas games like Cry of Fear or even Silent Hill 2 had some sense of catharsis depending on which ending you get, no matter how bittersweet, Signalis is void, it's very much empty. Reflecting that barren wasteland outside of the Penrose. The Promise probably wasn't even just a deal made, it is just wishing for death, because once everything ends, the Replika must deal the final blow. As a sidenote, Elster is probably not the main protagonist, but a false one. This is all of Ariane's dying dream and Elster's journey is her envisioning somehow she would come and finish it all. Elster is an android, like any Replika are, it's sort of weird she is thinking like a person. And Ariane was always the one speaking about her affections for Elster.
@Gilgamesh It is depressing, but for me it is more sad. There's a small line there that is blurred but very visible once you look through it. And it is very bittersweet at best.
Elster is the protagonist by virtue of being the character who's POV we're in. The replikas are also very human-like, with organic components and based on real humans' brains, to the point where they were "inheriting" their gestalts' mental problems and sometimes even referring to them as their past lives. Iirc there was a note saying they couldn't make any more Elsters because they lost the gestalt's neural pattern, until they found a broken Elster that they could copy/paste the template from. This was Ariane's Elster, so all other Elster units had her memories and were driven to fulfill "their" promise. That's why you come across so many other dead Elster units along the way.
I just finished the game. Sooo it was just a dream? Elster and Ariane died together in their spaceship. The infected base, monsters etc... didnt existed ? Sorry, maybe i m just dumb 😅
It's hard to tell what was real and what wasn't, I assume that Ariane had strong psychic powers as hinted in the Rotfront chapter, and because of them she created this nightmare - because of her strong need to finally fall asleep after suffering from radiation sickness aboard Penrose. You could say they existed inside her dream, the same way our world may exist in a dream of some higher being, which is very fitting for the game's lovecraftian tone.
ok the artifact ending is up, and it may imply that with ariane powers and some powerfull artifact reality can be bend. For example replikas are not robots, how they created is unknow and can be done only by powerfull reality bender.

I'll bet on the death dream, some parts are just far too ludicrous to indicate any sort of semblance to reality, even by eldritch standards.
Can't say i liked these endings. Maybe i would like something more ... simple? I still think its a good game.
@@danielgeronimo5538Sorry for being late, but this is perfectly in line with "eldritch standards" which is supposed to be purely incomprehensible.
What a bullshit ending......i was just looking at a red screen that says ''you selfish monster ''and absolutly nothing else.
The biggest takeaway from all this is the love can barely last 10 years and hatred wins in the end.
After all that these ending left much to be desired.
this game is worse more than $70 that modern AAA games charge you.
Another day of seeing a gay suffer 🙏
Alhamdulillah
i'm gonna be that guy: over-rated shock shlock garbo.

@@YalIsalive if he was a boomer he'd actually know how to handle a limited inventory lol
Should invest in therapy instead, if a tiny thing as inventory management can give you anxiety.
