Ms. Fleming was a huge fan of jazz and approaches some of her coloratura from a more relaxed jazz approach. She's always well prepared. It may not be to everyone's taste, but she sings it well
I didn't really expect to like this rendition by Fleming. But I think she is WONDERFUL in it. She is singing the aria the way Rossini expected her to! Expressing the words with the music! Whether someone likes her rendition or not....the point is...vocally...she is perfect in this. And I love her in this! A third to Sutherland and Anderson!
how stupid and arrogant are people to insult her with " TERRIBLE" or "WORST PERFORMANCE EVER" or comparing all the singers like women in porn. fast moving coloratura may not have been her absolute thing anymore in 2007 but still she was and is a spectacularly gifted and sophisticated singer. i believe most people agree that her excellence is most in lyrical singing. but anyway, she is not here to deliever to demanding, stupid consumers. she shares her work and talent and people should behave regardful and humble towards her.
Rossini did not intend the singer to sing the bare bones of his music. Each singer created and performed his/her own ornaments to show off their technical ability. It is enormously exhilarating music to hear or to sing and Renee Fleming is obviously enjoying herself very much here. Lucky us.
I really don't think she's enjoyed. IMHO, I think she knows quite well that those runs are not good. And although I agree with regarding Rossini's intentions, I believe that Fleming shows here a lack in understanding of Rossini's style (particularly those hideous scoops). Having said that, I think that Fleming excels in some Mozart and Strauss roles.
Maybe these very agile coloratura were not Renees absolute core strength, although she did some crazy stuff when she was younger. Here she is already beyond her vocal prime, being almost 50. But it is undeniable how skilled and proficient her vocal technique and musical intellect are. What she did not have in natural light timbre and agility, she compensated with skill and intelligence. And this is a very nice performance. I see her more excelling in lyrical repertory, but this is sung very well. But again, when she was young, she had a brilliant and strong high register up to D and E, and did very solid coluratura. Singers like June Anderson and Joan Sutherland just had a natural agility to their voices that you either have or do not have. Renee maybe did not have it, but who even cares.
First time I listened to it I was watching the video and I didn't enjoy it very much... Bumped into it a few years later and I was listening while doing something else so I wasn't watching the video and I found her rendition of this aria very interesting... And very well sung... It's very different from what you hear from the legends but it is not subpar at all.
I think she's good! No, it's not Sutherland or Anderson, but her voice is always beautiful. However, the overuse of embellishments is very distracting. She would've been better off perfecting The Dolce Pensiero section as written, rather than adding sloppy variations. But Fleming is always golden.
@@janetflier6192 I’ll let Richard Bonynge have the last word on this: the point of bel canto isn’t the technique or the variants or the high notes…..it is the long legato cantabile line.
@@meredeath Not! Rossini wrote this for his wife, who was not a high-note specialist and not even a soprano, more of a high mezzo. So while I may admire Sutherland or Anderson, and you may like Fleming, Rossini himself would’ve been dumbfounded (not in a good way) hearing this. Whenever singers went overboard with embellishments, he said, “marvelous music….who wrote it??”)
I have never heard Fleming struggle so much before. Clearly she was not on best form that evening, because her other performances that season were just superlative.
@@janetflier6192 Simply beacuse she had no breath control, was in trouble for most of the performance, especially on the high notes that were little sustained and often screamed. Furthermore, you can already hear that the voice is frayed, opaque and really not agile. This isn't Belcanto, it's a mess.
@@janetflier6192 Of course you are free to say what you believe, obviously. But mine is a technical judgment, not a matter of taste or subjective opinion. ;-)
How in the earth people love this chicken-like sounds? If this is the true technique -well, it’s not- I would never use that because it sounds so unpleasant.

Yes❣️🎶❣️
Absofreakinglutely!!!
Indeed Jazz was a big deal again in the 90’s and she also had an interest in going into jazz when studying singing. She combined elements.

She sings this too?! I have yet to be disappointed by her

5:30 its too pretty, understated, lyrical....every soprano ive heard goes off on that part...its not bad but too lyric soprano ish for me

Dave Glo The point of Bel Canto is to add embellishments! I don't find her embellishments "sloppy" at all!
Her embellishments are appropriate for the time period

@@josephhapp9 YES!!
i really love her but this is not a very good repertoire for her
The conductor does'nt seem to be with her each time she begins the triplets runs, she has to beat the tempo wiht her arms.
Like her voice but she needs breathing instruction. Rossini requires tremendous breath control...
Épouvantable 🙄🙄🙄
De belles intentions et de belles inventions (dans la cabalette notamment) mais que les vocalises sont laborieuses !!!
Sutherland owns this aria.....
Yojin Leem So do June Anderson, Lella Cuberli & Mariella Devia.
Sumi jo too, her Bel raggio lusinghier semiramide is simply beautiful and amazing.
Yes to Sutherland.
OMG it’s awful. Like a chicken on the long run. Rossini would have smashed her face if alive.
Federico M. Well, Rossini is dead! I enjoyed this, even if you didn't, (By the way, how do you know what Rossini would've liked?)

What a disaster - chopped up phrasing, gulping for breath, notes disappearing in the lower register, acuti lunged at...
