Lake District Walks:The Lion and the Lamb

- A walk up Helm Crag, Grasmere, on a beautiful day at the start of winter. The common name for Helm Crag is 'The Lion and the Lamb', after the rock formation which adorns the summit and is said to resemble the outline of a Lion with a lamb at it's front.
Although prominent from the valley floor, the famed lion is surprisingly elusive when the summit is reached, and is often confused with another, equally famous rock formation named 'The Howitzer'. But which is which, and how easy are they to find when you reach the summit?

I really loved watching this video and love the style of filing/commentary. I did this route in the summer. Complete white out. So it was great to actually see it! and the view to Gibsons Knott/Calf Crag (I walked that route in the cloud) so it was lovely to see that. Thank you
Thank you. One of the reasons I try to film in nice weather is because many people, such as yourself, only get a short while to walk in the area and very often the weather is less than kind to them. I'm glad you enjoyed the views on screen even if you were unable to see them for real.

Thank you Stephen. It was cold on the day, and I was quite surprised at the number of people at the top of the fell, considering i had seen very few on the way up. They included a young lady who came up with a couple of friends, and clearly was not a fell walker. She stood beside the Howitzer, and said "Is this all there is?!" Then announced to anyone who could hear that we were all "stark raving mad!" She'd wanted to go shopping but had been persuaded by her friends to do the walk as she would love it when she got to the top. Having struggled up in the cold weather, she was clearly very disappointed. She was in the background of a couple of the shots I took, but I edited her out. It is to be hoped the experience didn't spoil her holiday!

I did this walk a couple of days ago and followed it with Silver Howe. Today I did the Fairfield Horseshoe accompanied by your excellent Walks in Ambleside book. Never mind Wainwright’s- I’m doing the Worseleys haha! Love your videos Eric and I do hope that there will be more in the future. Thank you.
Sounds as though you are having a great holiday. A bit of a shame about the weather, all that cloud spoiling the views. Having said that, the temperature has been nicely warm enough. Pleased you are enjoying the book. I had great fun writing it. (Didn't seem like work!)

Just started to get back into walking, (25 years have past since carrying my daughter in one of them carry frames, finished my back off). now I am starting to enjoy! Do like the light heart-ed way the you have put this video together, now to find some more of your videos.

Another great video . I love the "other interesting history "information you include . PS I climbed the Howitzer and great fun , however I can see why many don't . Walk is never complete without a little man made of ginger :-)
Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it and well done for climbing the Howitzer. I was up there last year when a lady decided to climb it. Everyone at the bottom egged her on, and she did it. Then, when she was coming back down someone shouted "Don't fall off!" and almost immediately she did. Luckily she was totally unharmed and keen to see all the photos of her at the top.
YES!!!! Really enjoyed this, better than the one Julia Bradbury filmed for the BBC, added to my favourites :) Did the same walk about 10 years ago with my husband so this brought back some happy memories, we stopped and explored along the way too, the only complaint I had was there were too many other walkers about...so much so that when we were descending there was a queue behind us...or maybe that was because I'm too old and slow for galloping downhill so was holding everyone up...lol. Ann
Gosh. Thank you for that. Yes, there are always a lot of people up there. I had to wait for people to move out of the way in order to take some of the shots but that is never a problem. I often chat to folk when up on the fells and I didn't really want to come back down again. I'm also quite slow on the descent. The newness has worn off my knees.
Another brilliant film. We were in the Lakes recently and did Skiddaw and the Newlands valley horse shoe. Love the Lakes.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. I love the Newlands Valley horseshoe, however, it is about 4 years since I last did it. My favourite route up Skiddaw is from close to Bassenthwaite village, via the ridge of Ullock Pike, Long side Edge and Carlside, then up to the top of Skiddaw and back via the usually very quiet ridge to Bassenthwaite Village. A lovely day out.

The Lake District...a perfect place for EV`s!!!
Depends on what you mean by EV's. Electric Vehicles where I live, and yes, it is a great place for them as long as you can charge them. (Bear in mind that I am probably too old for Pokemon. My son used to talk about boosting his Pokemon EV's all the time!) Actually, the Lake District is just the perfect place for everything. Most of the time, at any rate.

Thank you. This is the English Lake District, in the North West corner of England, so about 300 miles north of London.
I have been up Easdale Road a few times now but always turn left over the bridge to Easdale Tarn. I really must turn right next time and do this wonderful climb, it looks great. Cheers Alan
It is a cracking walk Alan, and offers a few return options. My favourite is take the route in the video, then continue along the ridge to Calf Crag and come back down Far Easedale. Alternatively, you can turn right at Calf Crag and return via Steel Fell; a brilliant route with just one snag, the path from Calf Crag to Steel Fell is a tad boggy. Great fun in dry weather, and the last time I did it I saw no one on that route, but, if it is wet up there, it can be a bit of a plod. Whichever way you go, take two things: care, and your video camera. I look forward to seeing the footage. ATB Eric Worsley

Lol. Judging by the number of dog walkers you could be forgiven for having that impression. I had dog walking duties in our house for many years, and even refer to one particular piece of rock as 'Ben's Rock'.

@@mindyshively4947 Thank you. My day was, as you hoped, glorious for many reasons. Walking the Appalachians with your dog seems like a fine way to enjoy life. Sadly, my only experience of that area is via Bill Brysons book 'A walk in the woods', which I thoroughly enjoyed. As for your hopes regarding living in the Lake District, well I set off on a World Tour in 1973, the first step of which was a six month stay in Windermere. Almost 50 years later, I'm still here!
