I have the same bike...my winter project. I was considering getting 4-1 exhaust...I don't think so, now, after watching this. Thanks for the video

Just purchased a "81 XS11 MN Special. Needing to buy black metal front and rear turn signals. Many out there for the standard XS11 that are chrome finish. I used to have a 81 XS11 Special and regretted selling it. Thrilled I found this one. Thanks Ray in the USA

And may sell it due to a medical issue .

This was helpful. It also applies to an xj1100

Thanks bud! Really helpful. I couldn’t figure out how to remove the oil filter from its housing. Super simple though once you showed how!

I remember when these bikes were just hitting the showroom floor and they were SO Beautiful! Every Midnight Special of every displacement was an absolute work of TLC and it Really Showed! C’mon Yamaha, give us a New One! Yeah I’d say this bike was Slightly overfilled…🤣
Sounds like it needs a complete Tune Up to include a CarbSync.

My 1985 Vmax has the same filter and housing. You have a washer missing. Mine did too. Its not a problem... just buy one and put it on when you do the next oil change.

Nice bike you've got there, congratulations! It's not a big deal but it looks like you have a washer missing in the oil filter housing. It would normally sit on top of the spring and the P/N is 90201-21608-00.

Yes, thanks for mentioning this. I wouldn't have otherwise known and I'll be sure to add it during my next oil change.

You an are missing the washer that sits on top of the spring. Without that washer it chews at the rubber seal on the filter.

Got an XS11 project bike myself that I just got running after a full restoration of the carbs. So I'll be checking our your vids. Much appreciated that you're sharing!
Looks like you're missing the spring washer, no? Probably not a problem but something to consider for the next oil change.

    Hello Vancouver cyclist
    I have a similar problem.
1979 1100. Just purchased. Bike was running fine.
I went ahead and did an oil change, noticed it was very low.
Drained what was in the pan, added 3 quarts. Started her up and within a couple of minutes oil started shooting out the pipes. I turned her off and oil was seeping all over the place from that nipple you described.
I know this is probably not the correct forum, but any insight you may have I would be most appreciative

I'm sorry I don't know the answer. I haven't had any more oil leaking from that nipple since I filled it to the correct oil level. Good luck with yours!

Looking forward to seeing all your videos on this bike, I bought one of these about two years ago which is slowly being fully restored !
Mine is a Canadian import (I'm in the UK btw) you mentioned in your walk around video that you think iyours is a genuine MNS an easy way to tell is the first 3 digits of the frame and engine number these first 3 digits denote The year, model and country. The 1981 MNS is 4W1 for the USA and 4W2 for Canada ! that's how I know I have a Canadian one 😉
FYI the no. 2 & 3 header pipes on the original exhaust system completely clear the oil filter housing ! Are you intending to keep this bike and maybe restore it ? I only ask because I might be able to help you out with an original exhaust if you are interested I think they make a big difference in the look of the bike, also I found the exhaust to be the biggest pain in the backside to sort out but I found out alot about them along the way.
I'm currently working on my wiring loom replacing every connector and every terminal because the wonderful British weather has been eating away at it somewhat I better get back to it 😏 If there is anything you are not sure about I'd be happy to help if I can I am not an expert but I have picked up quite a bit of knowledge on the Midnight's ! I forgot to mention that I have a 1980 MNS that I bought back in 91 and spent best part of 4 years restoring it, i'ts been finished about 2 years now 🙂

Thanks for the info, I checked and the VIN on this bike is 4W2000440. Looks like it's the real thing!
