Flying with your guitar? A short guide!

- When flying with your guitar, there are several things to consider. In my experience (no warranty!), bolt-on guitars can be safely transported in a suitcase after the neck has been unscrewed. Don't forget new strings, a screwdriver, other tools you need and to keep all parts together in a bag.
Neck-through guitars can be transported in the cabin, if a) it fits in the overhead compartment, b) your ticket allows a carry-on (bring the guitar instead of the carry-on), and c) there is space in the aircraft, so don't be the last one to board!
Summary:
For bolt on necks, just transport your guitar well packed in a suitcase. For neck-through guitars, call your Airline to make sure you can transport it in the cabin on your specific flight. Save travels!
I traveled with two fender guitars by removing the necks. Both bodies fit in a standard carry-on. I wrapped the necks (fret board to fret board) using small bubble wrap and secured them with a pair of socks that coincidentally had guitars printed all over them. Threw that in my backpack, "personal item". They stuck out a bit, but no one said anything. All good.
honestly a really good idea
I'm doing this with my brand new Pbass. I removed the neck and pack the body and neck in my suitcase and that's it. Just be sure you have a Luthier to tune and assembly again the instrument once you reached your place.
can I just do it myself?
i think it quite simple
I always do it myself, no big deal.
what changes when you take it apart to the point where you need a luthier to do it?
This was super helpful, thank you
BRo MVP i never thought of this
I have to take my Martin Acoustic from Philadelphia to Raleigh on American. Any tips?

Do you have to remove the string?
Yes of course
No, you can keep your strings. Julian Lage does this whenever he flies for gigs and always keeps his strings.
