    While I was ill, I had the opportunity to host a master joiner in my workshop (which I had built for using power tools to work wood.) During the two years he was here I saw him make very fine traditional furniture using just wood planes, etc. Now you have opened yet another door. I will make the traditional clock cases to hold my hand -built movements with hand-built planes.

    I've made one wooden plane from beech so far, a kerfing plane. There is something magical about making your own tools by hand. Thanks for this video and your book!

      Not only is it satisfying to make things with tools you made, but it opens the door to the powerful notion that you can make tools to accomplish things you might not otherwise be able to do or do so well. I am glad you like the book and video.

    Thank you David. I will have to stay with my Lie Nielsen planes though. I never could get along with wooden planes; not even a simple smoother I made. I like the studied way in which you approach your work; which, I'm sure you agree, has much to do with the quality of woodworking for anyone. Thanks again.

    @bigyoda12 A laminated plane works just fine -- the glued up block of wood is potentially even more stable. Have fun!

    I have your book. A great help. Is myrtle a good wood to make planes? Thanks

    • @djfwood
      @djfwood  7 років тому +1

      Myrtle, aka CA Bay Laurel, is sufficiently hard to perform decently as a plane, however with a T/R ratio of 2.9, I consider it too unstable. For the unacquainted, this means that for any change in humidity, expect the tangential direction of the the growth rings to move nearly 3 times the amount as the radial direction -- that can lead to planes that don't stay flat! The point is moot if the wood is acclimated to your shop's ambient humidity and the shop is climate controlled.

    Sounds like you are referring to a plow or rabbet plane. My book does not cover these.
