Thanks for another great video Anton! Interesting stuff... Odd that one theory is neutron star mergers it was my understanding that they are super rare and yet if even a small fraction of these observed frbs are the result of mergers then they happen much more often than we hypothesize...
It could be the shielding effect of the magnetars on infalling objects. The magnetic field is strong enough to rip individual molecules apart by stripping the electrons and turning them into plasma which stream into the poles. So an asteroid is turned to plasma and that swirling plasma that only lasts for a few milliseconds is what is moving the charges that do the emitting.
Seems unlikely. If it were the case then I would also expect to see much longer radio bursts as the magnetar consumed more diffuse matter such as dust and gas clouds.
FRB's are going to be full of new discoveries & a very new field in Astronomy & science as a whole. You did well to not say Aliens throughout the whole post Anton 😁. On a serious note, these FRB's are a new fascinating new field in Radio Astronomy & glad you covered them. Great post as always
Perhaps it will seem like a naïve question in relation to this mystery but it was the large number of FRB detections which prompted it. When a new star lights up, by galactic standards, not a great show but by our local standards an apocalyptic event, perhaps there is a burst of radio energy at that moment of ignition and perhaps looking at the rate of star births and the rate at which FRBs are detected could offer a correlation to investigate, or not.
Thanks Anton. I’ve spent a lot of time under the stars. In the last ten years or so I’ve noticed slow stationary flashes of light that seem to be at the height of satellites. I recently saw one that flashed three times at the same place within forty minutes. I saw half a dozen that night. Very clear starry skies.
Researchers are obviously looking for objects to explain FRBs. When I saw the images of the galactic nebulae I thought of the parallel to capacitors as in lightning discharges, like in a thunderstorm. Maybe the discharge of static voltage happens in space itself and not in a specific object. Objects such as magnetars gradually charge the space around them until a discharge occurs. Just an idea.
I had basically the same idea, but with a twist. The nebula is not only charged by the magnetar, but also shaped by its magnetic field. Maybe the sudden release of energy gets concentrated into a funnel/beam, and we see it only because we are right in its path. That would explain the high amount of energy produced in these events.
Imagine this is some kind of interstellar communication that is so advanced they just look like little blips to us but in each one of those is some giant message that we just can't process because our tools aren't precise enough? I know that's almost certainly not what they are but I like to imagine it could be.
I think I have a solution to origin issue. FRBs are similar is spectral signature to that of a explosive EMP generator. This implies a compressed series of harmonics generated by a plasmic entity/cloud undergoing filamenty creation and collapse
Just throwing this out there. This phenomenon reminds me of electrical signals in the brain. They last fractions of a second are happening everywhere and at all times. As of now this has no scientific basis but I have a feeling this idea should be looked into
In the rank of gravitational field strength there is only one with a larger gravitational field then a neutron star and that is the blackhole. FRB's are a product of the action of the extremely large gravitational field of neutron stars on the dipole moments of the near by gravitons and electron's. The neutron star category includes pulsars and magnetars, which have a very large concentration of gravitons, all of which have electric and magnetic dipole moments. As these dipole moments are effected by the extremely strong magnetic fields of the magnetar they occasionally become repolarized which results in a FRB event via a cascading process consisting of graviton's MDM (Magnetic Dipole Moment) re-polarizing it's own Electric Dipole Moment, and nearby electrons MDM which in turn repolarizes electrons Electric Dipole Moment (EDM) that results in the repolarization of all nearby electron dipole moments which are responsible for the varieties of fast radio burst when their dipole moments are repolarized into sufficient alignment with the observer. The same happens in the vicinity of the event horizon of a blackhole however the FRBs are quickly captured by the singularity.
It’s a form of intergalactic soccer. While the natural phenomenon was noticed around black holes, Magnetars were more accessible and more “fun”. Participating teams take turns skipping an asteroid like ball through a keyhole magnetic structure. Each burst is a goal, and most of what we see are local teams. The big leagues are up there too, but unfortunately without knowing what team is what, it’s difficult to keep score or root for our favorite star system.
Hi Anton. I have a theory about what causes frb's. I am an aircraft engineer, and when working on gyros, I noticed that as they spin down, they can maintain attitude for a while, but eventually at some point tumble in a very chaotic way (it's amazing to watch, it looks quite violent). Imagine that is a pulsar/magnetar that is focusing a radio beam from each pole. As it's spin slows, and it starts to tumble chaoticly that focused beam sweeps across the universe, and may pass across earth. The (radio wave) observer on earth would see a brief flash, that may or may not repeat. What do you think of my idea?
Light emitted or absorbed by atoms have specific frequencies. When we see the light from distant objects we can see the shifts in frequency due to motion, magnetic fields, gravity, and cosmological expansion. If time passed differently at different locations, we'd probably notice. But interesting question nonetheless. Growing up, I often speculated that differences in the passage of time was what caused the observations that lead us to conclude the big bang happened. After learning much more about physics and astronomy, it's clear that there are only 2 causes for time to slow down, gravity and speed.
Not at all a bad theory… And kinda funny, too! They say that if we could hear the sun, from the 8 light years away that it is, we would be beyond deafened.
@@doneasneakyonya I'd imagine whatever "sound" a star might make would be quite intense if could hover just above the surface of one without getting crushed/ripped apart/irradiated/fried instantly. :)
I wonder if it has something to do with precession and flipping around the axis? Like how gyroscopes can have two axis of rotation, and a minor axis causes the major axis to flip around every once and a while. I think I saw something like that in a lecture once.
