  • Today Melissa and I put together a small, quick, easy, inexpensive raised garden bed. We used more Red Pine that I sawed on the Woodmizer LX 150 Sawmill.

We have had two golden retreivers and have enjoyed them both so very much. We play hide and seek, you always know there are two sets of eyes watching your every move. They are so loving and very intelligent for sure. They love to please you all the time and of course they always have a toy baby, mama's slippers, and balls in the mouth a/k/a a retreiver. Love your garden beds and a few years ago we did a similar thing 4 ft x 16 ft boy does it yeild a lot of food. I used that square foot gardening soil and added some "worm castings" I highly recommend you use this. They sell it at worm shops or nursery's. WOW great stuff for sure.
You can always add a small wood corner triangles. CHICKEN WIRE DOWN FIRST to keep the moles out, then soil...plastic will hold too much water in the bottom.

Get yourself some woven black plastic gardening cloth to put on top of the raised bed, burn 3" diameter holes through to plant the seeds, and never be concerned with weeding. Off the leash is a good name for your channel Melissa. Great video M&M, thumbs up.

Hello Melissa & Mike. Sorry I am so late. Out doing yard work since early this morning in New Brunswick Canada. Just a little info, if I am not to late. If you fill the garden up to the 2 x 4's with dirt the grass should not come through. The ussual rule is 8 inches of dirt and the grass will not come through, but if you want to add extra protection from grass, line the bottom with corrigated cardboard, then add your soil. Great channel, thanks for the entertainment. PS: I did my beds 20 inches high, but then used the hugelkultur way. I lined the bottom with old rotting logs and dead trees, grass clipings and then dirt.

Nice raised bed,I'll tell you a story about my first raised bed,,I used 2x8 lumber ,filled it with soil consisting of peat moss, compost and topsoil all mixed together in a cement mixer, the mixer did a great job, then I wanted to plant carrots,I made straight lines in my soil 6" apart and then I planted my carrot seed sparingly ,when harvest time came I had beautiful carrots, the only mistake I made was the soil was not deep enough,so my carrots grew until they hit the hard soil below and they turned to form a 90degree angle,I sure worked hard to get those carrots out.true story, now I set them in half barrels off the ground about waist high,it's also easy on your back,.

Great job on the plant boxes. You can use cardboard in the bottom of the boxes to help defeat any grass or weeds coming through. It will also decompose as well.

In order to stay out of the bigger towns nearby, and to shop local, we bought 2x8x8s to do two 2'x8' and two 2'x4' beds at a local lumber yard. We also got the 2x4s to do the tops like you did. They were treated and it was $133. That will give you an idea of what you saved by having your own lumber. I've been complaining about the quality of lumber for years, but the local stuff was so much better that the big box lumber.

Liner in the bed is to stop weeds from coming up through the bed. If you plant directly on grass in one season there will be grass coming through the bed. I would put the liner in for sure. Best of luck.

  • @chrispileski6640

Don't use plastic as a liner, it will inhibit drainage and your plants will get root rot. If anything, use garden fabric. I wouldn't put it near trees either, you'd be surprised where tree roots will go. Can't wait to see your new video Melissa.

Looks great! Do the same build except for the 2x10s. Take the best of those slabs and rip the hearts out of them to obtain 3 cut side 1 bark side boards +2"" thickness 5-6" wide. Use 2 stacked boards a side. If you match beveled the seam side rips it would be plenty dirt tight. I think you would get a nice rustic looking raised bed out of waste product. The bonfire might not be as big though. ;)

I added this comment before. I think Melissa and her daughters should build something by themselves and put in on her channel. Assuming Mike does the saw milling due to safety issues. Also add a 2x2 on the corners..! And BTW, my wife’s great grandparents had a farm Southwest of Somerset. We found their burial tombstones in a Lutheran graveyard and took photos.

Mike and Melissa, we cut 18" pieces of 6 mill poly to staple to the inside surfaces of our pine planter boxes. Let the plastic excess run back under the planting soil, and it keeps water and soil organisms from attacking the wood fibers. Ours have been in place for many years, with very little rotting issues. Like the "Morgans, Off-Leash" moniker a lot. Blue Bird day in Colorado, so more nice weather headed your way.

Melissa, raised garden beds are great but you might note that in mine I had to put a mesh screen on the very bottom to keep out those pesky critters that like borrow up through the bottom and to eat the root system or the underground vegetables themselves.

on your raised beds what i did i had some wood pellets that i got from TSC that were bad i put them in the bottom of the bed and flated them out and straw and laid that flat and then the dirt and Peat Moss on top and that way you don't have to put a lot of dirt on top now with you you can get your saw Dust and fill in the box about 1/2 way up and put the dirt on top now you will have to add a little dirt every you do to the saw dust rotting and that way it helps with it being Recycling ( Now i use Some Mushroom Soil down since we are From The Mushroom Captial of the World Kennett Square Pa and your plants will Kick Butt )

When I built a raised garden at church I put 3 layers of newspaper in the bottom of the box then added the soil mixture. The newspaper effectively killed the grass and by not disturbing the ground I did not expose weed seeds to the elements for growth. The only down side Is worms did not start to appear till the second year.

No plastic liner so you don't block the earth worms. And if you get the soil ready before you can plant, spread coffee grounds on top to draw and feed earth worms. They really keep the soil loose for you and help keep it from compacting.

Hey Melissa my wife and I put a layer of plain cardboard with little or no ink down before we fill the beds. This keeps all the weeds and grass from coming up in the beds . It will break down and turn to compost after a while. If you use plastic it will always be in there.

  • @genecarr4568

Don't use plastic, use woven ground cover that allows water to drain through and keeps the weeds from growing up throught the bed. You can also line the bottom with 1/4" hardware to keep moles from burrowing up into the bed (if you have moles).

Those beds look great! We have 3 raised beds, each 4x10. First time, we used untreated 2x12, and applied a coat of boiled linseed oil. Those beds lasted about 8 or 9 years before they rotted too much to stay together. Last year, we rebuilt using 6" wide cedar deck boards, with 2 boards stacked on each side 12" total, and some cedar 2x2 stakes every couple of feet to keep them running straight. We didn't line the boards, but on the bottom, we put a layer of gravel for drainage and a sheet of landscape fabric to keep the soil in. We did a mix of top soil and compost, with some vermiculite, and we add 80 lbs of compost to each bed each year. Works great!

Hey, beds look great. If the bed is going to be sat on,you think you need to put a 6 inch 2x4 in the middle of top 2x4 for support? After a few rains the green wood will start to twist and bend. I had that problem and had to put supports under to rail. Not trying tell you what to do I’m sure you have a lot of those people out there. I try tell others about my mistakes. After you get all that weight from the dirt in there the wood twists everywhere and it keeps the wood wet all the time. I really enjoy your posts!

Hello Mike & Melissa : I like you both as a couple The videos where both of you are working together is good chemistry. The new Title to Melissa's channel sounds pretty much like a breakaway from the normal 'wife as companion' scenario, and she is calling my man out by taking off the dog collar and becoming "unleashed" from hubby and doing her own thing. I could tell the competition was lurking in the background, as Mike was having way too much fun doing construction and working with his hands, knowledge, and expertise to create practicality and beauty in his finished products. Sounds like there are control issues here. PS. I am glad that you canned the commercials for equipment. Just purchase what you need and can afford, in the way of big machinery. It gives your channel more authenticity if I can sense there are no sales pitches hiding in your content. If I want to see someone hawking products, I can ALWAYS turn on regular TV. Peace and Blessings.
