Reconnecting to our family heritage has been an incredible journey.
In 2020, we decided to move to Peru, and a year later we opened our studio in Lima.
Our mission is to create the most sustainable brand in the world, without falling into the trap of greenwashing. To do this, we decided to vertically integrate and learn as much as we can about the textile supply chain: sourcing fibers, spinning/knitting/weaving machinery, textile dyeing and finishing, and garment making.
So far, we have been able to greatly reduce our carbon footprint, remove all the plastics from our clothes, and introduce a natural dye catalog. There is still a long road ahead, but we know that to make a real change we will have to share this journey with you.

I’d love to support you but this is greenwashing. Using wool always causes some harm to animals. It’s not vegan and therefore not ethical. Can you not use only organic cotton instead?

Hi there! thanks for your comment! We really appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns. But we must inform you that shearing animals like alpacas and sheep is actually healthy for them. Not shearing them can lead to overheating, skin infections, and even flystrike, and it's considered animal cruelty when not sheared. It's important to remember that there are many factors to consider when making ethical choices, and it's not always a simple black-and-white issue. As you mentioned, polyester, while vegan, contributes to the microplastic pollution problem in our oceans, and affects fish as well.

@@ecoayamedia Thank you for your reply. You are right, just because it is vegan, it doesn’t mean it is good for the planet. However, when it comes to using animals, there is often a lot of greenwashing. Peruvian alpaca wool received a lot of bad publicity last year because of cruelty to the animals, and many fashion producers stopped using it. So perhaps you need to make your own stance clearer. Wool is usually a co-product, not a by-product, of the meat industry, and causes a lot of methane as well. I just think, when companies set themselves out as being sustainable and ethical, they should address all issues. Thank you.

@@greengreengreenorg Yes, that is a good point that we need to create a better life for the alpacas and sheep. Also, part of them having a healthier life is to shear their wool since they will get sick if they are not sheared. However, to fully understand what is sustainable we would need to understand how the fiber of a garment is created, the usage of the garment, and the end life of the garment. For example, polyester is created from petroleum, and oil rigs have been known to disrupt wildlife and contaminate their environment. Recycled polyester has issues of releasing microplastics and can only be recycled a few times. For organic cotton, although it is free of pesticides and plastics, the garment itself absorbs moisture creating bacteria which means you would need to wash it after use. Organic cotton also does not insulate or keep you warm in very cold conditions. Wool rarely needs to be washed since it's anti-bacterial fiber and has insulating properties. Both organic cotton and wool biodegrade naturally unlike polyester and recycled polyester. There are man-made natural fibers like lyocell and rayon; however, many chemicals are used to process these fibers into yarn. Our idea wouldn't be to stop using wool because that would mean to stop shearing the animal which is unethical; but, to keep pushing for better animal care. There are certificates out there like RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard) and RWS (Responsible Wool Standards) that are meant to create better regulations for these animals, but even with this, we don't believe it's enough. We believe sustainability is a mindset and as we grow as a company, we will keep pushing the sustainability boundaries like trying to get better animal care.

@@ecoayamedia Thank you for your reply, and your efforts. And I think we both agree, there is no place in fashion for any kind of plastic, even recycled.
