Its Reduce, Reuse then Recycle. Reducing has a bigger impact than reusing, and reusing has a bigger impact than recycling. If you want to make the biggest difference, start by reducing.
I think you missed the update there's now 5 r's....Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle,
Your point makes a lot of sense, but we see can see that people have come so far from the pre-plastic days that its quite difficult to get people to reduce their usage . People only care about their motives and they are always blinded by the fact that they don't use as much. So right now the strongest option is recycling cause enough waste has been generated to do so :)
Why is everybody so focused on recycling. Why not focuse on slowing down the production of plastics?

If there is demand, there is offer. We need to reduce our plastic consumption. It doesn't matter how big or small is the amount of plastic we stop from buying, just reducing is enough to start reversing the problem 😋

In summary, recycling plastics to clothes is actually worse, but it's a good marketing gimmick.
Clothing companies want to continue making their sweet profits at the cost of the environment, since the consumers don't really care and they just want cooler and cheaper stuff.

We as consumers should not support. We have the real power. If buying stops killing too would.

@@ser-hangaWell it is still better than those bottles landing on a landfills like most single use packaging does despite labels telling what kind of plastic it is made of. So yeah maybe it is downcycling but it is good that it is recycled anyways. And we as consumers should not buy food in plastic packaging. Not onpy it marrs taste of it but also poses a threat to environment.
The words "sell less stuff" will not translate to people who want to play the game of keeping up with the Jones and business owners looking for opportunity. So that's out the window. So that solution of sustainable wool sounds like a great idea though.
The best thing to do would be to use what you have until you can't anymore not buying more and creating more waste. And when you do eventually need to buy, you can try second hand or buying from a small and sustainable business.

love the end comment about how the best way to tackle the issue is to sell less stuff. @cnbc you should make a video about how businesses could slow down their production when they're ever-competing for increasing their marketshare. if they're a public company they have no choice but to grow because of their legal duty to make returns for shareholders. this is the conversation we need to spread in the mainstream public before our civilization collapses.
This is spot on! A capitalist, growth at all costs mindset is inherently counter to the needs of the planet. Companies need to make far less stuff, have quarterly fashion line releases vs every month for some brands, etc.
Except, this system repurposes the plastic already created, only to put it back out into the ecosystem again once the buyer decides they no longer need the product. We’re still stuck with the plastic waste already produced, and doing nothing to halt the production of fast fashion and single use items to begin with. Brands should cut ties with wasteful/unethical practices and companies, all together. Simply switching to biodegradable packaging and environmentally friendly ingredients would create a bigger impact, other companies would soon follow seeing consumers are interested in such products. Change is in the hands of us, at the end of the day we are the ones driving sales and deciding what companies make money and the ones who don’t.

This method of recycling old plastic bottles and turning then into polyester to make clothing is touted as "sustainable"... it still doesnt change the amount of plastic being produced or consumed for single use products. Also, I wouldn't doubt if this used to make fast fashion garments which might be used for 1 season. Not as perfect as the narrator suggested.
The best way is to wear bamboo, tencil, linen, organic cotton and wear less.. Dont try to overburden your wardrobe and life.
This clip is actually very informative, but I think people should focus more on educating the consumers to consume less and of better quality. If we all consume less, and waste less, it makes a big impact altogether.
it'd be nice if at the end-of-life of the product, you could give it back to nike for recycling and get a discount on the next pair.
Hnm does this (they take any cloth, in bulk), but still recycling consumes energy and also generates waste in one way or the other. So while buy back is a good option and must-do for brands/sellers, the best and the most effective way is to consume sustainably. Hence one of the biggest powers to save this planet is with us only.

I still reckon that selling on eBay or Vinted would be more profitable and you are sure these clothes go to people who will use it instead of being dumped on landfills like in Ghana or Chile

Great video! Other things to consider - poor performance and toxic leaching to the person wearing recycled polyester when they perspire. Natural fibers perform very well, are safe to wear, can be naturally dyed and are 100% biodegradable.

If people demanded biodegradable textiles in their clothes, the manufacturers would follow suit. I can’t see the masses willing to pay extra for it though. People say they care about the environment until money gets involved. The truth is synthetics perform very well in certain situations such as wet environments, cold and warm. Merino wool is a good alternative, however it costs more then what a lot of people can afford. It also has performance properties different then synthetics, some better, some worst. Also, a lot of it is blended with synthetics. I think the solution is biodegradable synthetics that can completely replace all manufactured plastics, or further exploration of natural fibers/blends that can be produced organically and on a large scale.
And then tvere's the exploitation of the workers in hortible conditions on places like China, India and Bangladesh or the massive exploitation of the Africsn workers in luxury leather tannery's in Southern Europe. Sustainability does'nt just come with greenwashed lines, it comes as a pavkage of decent conditions, recycling etc.

Sure the plastics are getting recycled. But recycling plants cause so much air pollution.
Produce less plastic.
Simply wearing sustainable brands isn't going to do it. Using less plastic and taking a public transport is more impactful than wearing sustainable clothes. Rather wearing thrifted or vintage and caring for what you already have is going to have a bigger impact. That's how you can longer the life of clothes already existing.
The only shoes I'm even looking at now are Allbirds and Adidas Parley.
We've put ourselves in a difficult spot... :/ We really need to learn to make do with less, and make better choices from the start (i.e., not use plastic bottles and other wasteful things.) Thank you for sharing this story.
They're high quality items. Still it has negative impact on environment even when made with recycled materials. They are using sweat shops and Nike should make their workers pay more so that they can meet one's end. Also check if brands don't use tax paradises or other immoral practuces on fashion transparency index

plastic bottles can be recycled multiple times but once they are converted to polyester, that's the end it is ultimately destined for landfills.
They fall in landfills most of the time anyways. Good to see that there can be turned into good quality shoes
Yes, but how can we reduce our consumption? 😲 Let's take clothes for example. Most people are ashamed of repeating their clothes (so cheap and fast fashion you see) and cloth renting is not yet popular.
who is the major provider of plastic in the world? thats where we have to check the bills to reduce the production of plastic and go forward to the second producer and the third one, they have to stop it.
Fishing industry but fashion industry is also a big polluter.
