    Hello! New sub here! I just started my YT channel, most of my first video's were about barefoot shoes, but I'm adding in Organic Cotton clothing video's. I'm on a mission to wear only organic cotton clothes, and it is such a challenge! Shirts are pretty easy to find, but my biggest problem is finding men's short shorts. Used Patagonia pants are about the best I can find. Industry of all Nations is one of my favorite companies, but spendy. Cheers!

    Exactly why I avoid fast fashion and get most of my clothes custom made. If I need some fast fashion items I tend to be 99% picky about the materials used to make the clothes.

      Either cotton, or wool including gabardine is good for making clothes and wear comfortably. Polyesters on the other hand repels water but makes you stink up more especially if you have to deal with hyperhidrosis.

    • @armsofandes

      Hi Andreea, thank you for your concern. The seashell we are using is in fact a Mussell species, and the shells are collected as a byproduct of the food industry. So, it can be said that they are not killed directly for their shell, and the shell would go to waste if it weren’t for the use we make of them.

    Perhaps you should study the cradle to grave life cycle analyses, and you will learn a polyester fabric requires less energy, water, and other natural resources to produce than a cotton fabric. And there is no comparison when considering the superiority of recycled polyester. These comprehensive studies have been conducted by government agencies, universities, and other research organizations and are available at no charge via a google search. The problem is people, as the bottle recycling rate has remained stagnant at around 35% forever in the US. And our government has done nothing to promote and demand recycling. This is a completely misinformed and misleading article!

    I’d love to support you but this is greenwashing. Using wool always causes some harm to animals. It’s not vegan and therefore not ethical. Can you not use only organic cotton instead?

    • @ecoayamedia
      @ecoayamedia 4 місяці тому

      Hi there! thanks for your comment! We really appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns. But we must inform you that shearing animals like alpacas and sheep is actually healthy for them. Not shearing them can lead to overheating, skin infections, and even flystrike, and it's considered animal cruelty when not sheared. It's important to remember that there are many factors to consider when making ethical choices, and it's not always a simple black-and-white issue. As you mentioned, polyester, while vegan, contributes to the microplastic pollution problem in our oceans, and affects fish as well.

    • @greengreengreenorg
      @greengreengreenorg 4 місяці тому

      @@ecoayamedia Thank you for your reply. You are right, just because it is vegan, it doesn’t mean it is good for the planet. However, when it comes to using animals, there is often a lot of greenwashing. Peruvian alpaca wool received a lot of bad publicity last year because of cruelty to the animals, and many fashion producers stopped using it. So perhaps you need to make your own stance clearer. Wool is usually a co-product, not a by-product, of the meat industry, and causes a lot of methane as well. I just think, when companies set themselves out as being sustainable and ethical, they should address all issues. Thank you.

    • @ecoayamedia
      @ecoayamedia 4 місяці тому

      @@greengreengreenorg Yes, that is a good point that we need to create a better life for the alpacas and sheep. Also, part of them having a healthier life is to shear their wool since they will get sick if they are not sheared. However, to fully understand what is sustainable we would need to understand how the fiber of a garment is created, the usage of the garment, and the end life of the garment. For example, polyester is created from petroleum, and oil rigs have been known to disrupt wildlife and contaminate their environment. Recycled polyester has issues of releasing microplastics and can only be recycled a few times. For organic cotton, although it is free of pesticides and plastics, the garment itself absorbs moisture creating bacteria which means you would need to wash it after use. Organic cotton also does not insulate or keep you warm in very cold conditions. Wool rarely needs to be washed since it's anti-bacterial fiber and has insulating properties. Both organic cotton and wool biodegrade naturally unlike polyester and recycled polyester. There are man-made natural fibers like lyocell and rayon; however, many chemicals are used to process these fibers into yarn. Our idea wouldn't be to stop using wool because that would mean to stop shearing the animal which is unethical; but, to keep pushing for better animal care. There are certificates out there like RAS (Responsible Alpaca Standard) and RWS (Responsible Wool Standards) that are meant to create better regulations for these animals, but even with this, we don't believe it's enough. We believe sustainability is a mindset and as we grow as a company, we will keep pushing the sustainability boundaries like trying to get better animal care.

      @@ecoayamedia Thank you for your reply, and your efforts. And I think we both agree, there is no place in fashion for any kind of plastic, even recycled.

    Great video BUT it leaves unanswered a few things. 1. How damaging is polyester in reality, microplastics sound horrendous but we do need solid evidence that they are actually destroying our planet before we can take action; 2. Cotton and wool are natural but have environmental implications too. Cotton is less durable than polyester so much be replaced often. It is also a water sponge so cannot be comfortably worn in cold climates or during intense sports activities. Wool is durable but must be processed and dyed--and it requires controlling and processing animals which is not always done compassionately. No clear answers here, but the issues are more nuanced and complex than portrayed. Thanks for opening up a good conversation.

    • @ecoayamedia
      @ecoayamedia 6 місяців тому

      Hi Daniel! Thank you so much for your comment. We would like to answer you with all the information we have had access to: 1. While there isn't conclusive proof of the direct effects of microplastics on human health, scientists have found that plastics can carry bacteria, potentially causing health issues. Studies have definitively shown that phthalates, found in plastics, negatively affect our reproductive health. Environmentally, the main issue is that plastics don't biodegrade, leading to overflowing landfills and polluted waterways. 2. This is true. While organic cotton doesn't release microplastics and is biodegradable, it's less durable. Additionally, cotton isn't ideal for hot weather. Note that polyester, though potentially warmer, traps moisture, promoting bacterial growth. 3. Let's not forget the environmental impact of polyester production. It starts with petroleum extraction, requiring disruptive infrastructure and potentially causing oil spills and carbon emissions. Animal welfare is a valid concern, especially regarding merino sheep and goats. However, it’s important to remember that alpacas and sheep require regular shearing for their own health.

      While we have no definitive proof of how microplastics affect our health in he long run, two basic questions always remain (whether it's plastics in our bodies or pumping CO2 into the atmosphere and so on): - do we act now with the assumption that it may be more damaging as time goes on? - or do we not do anything and find out only when it's too late? We naturally didn't have microplastics in our bodies and generally I wouldn't want them there.
