    Hi Mr Scott. I can't thank you enough for the time and money you saved me. Your video really hit the spot. I did both sides of my Vito in just over 1 hour per side and I'm not a mechanic. Interestingly the parts cost me 19.99 per side and my local merc garage quoted me £160 for parts and 3 hours labour PER side! Thanks again. Now onto my Audi A4 that has the same problem...

      Rob G Rob that's great news and music to my ears. If gives me immense satisfaction if I can help others take control and not pay through the nose for what are often straight forward repairs. Well done. Kind regards, Scott

    Thanks for this extremely helpful video. RH (drivers) window packed up last July and it turned out the plastic cog that fits into the motor had sheared off the drum. Got the kit from eBay with gearbox/drum, cables and sliders. My Vito is late 2004 model and the impact bar made life interesting. Had to unbolt the bottom of both rails before I could remove the impact bar through the slot in the door edge, then had to rebolt the rails again before lowering the window to undo the clips securing the glass. Then once I’d secured the glass with tape in the raised position I was able to undo the bolts to both rails and remove the entire mechanism for inspection. Used the new gearbox (drum and casing) and found the tricky step of getting the drum back into the casing took a great deal of force and many attempts. Once I’d got it all back together and tested it I discovered to my cost that I’d fed one of the cables on the wrong side of the impact bar. The motor was powerful enough to stretch and kink that cable badly enough that I had to use the replacement cable from the kit - after dismantling everything yet again.
    LH (passenger) side broke 5 months later. This time it was the plastic slider that failed as seen in the video. Thought I’d find the job easier this time but it still took ages - again the forcing of the drum into the casing was a real pig. Those cables end up under some tension ! Scott, thanks once again for saving me a heap of cash.

      ... and had to carry out a 3rd repair today. Drivers side, plastic slider broke this time. Still had the spares from the first kit so no new purchase required. Getting the drum into the casing was a little easier this time - maybe the cable has stretched a bit over time.

    Thanks Scott, very helpful. I'm in the middle of doing this job on the driver's side (RHS in UK). I bought a kit on Ebay for £11 delivered which comes with a new centre drum with cables wound on, cables and new plastic lifter brackets. I'll keep all the old parts but am fitting the kit complete which hopefully (!) will make the job easier. John

    Just fixed the window in my Viano, thanks to you! I am an Aussie living in France (10years) and was a vivid follower of the 500cc Grand prix, following Wayne Gardner from the beginning with my Brother Dominic Meyer (whom raced in 1986 but unfortunately had a fatal accident on the 11th of September on the roads!) Thank you very much! Take care JohnnyBgood

      @ScottElliott152  9 років тому

      +John Meyer John I'm glad I could help you fix the regulator. I hope my video didn't make you homesick. Did your brother have the accident just last month? Very sad news and it's hard going losing a sibling. Grief is a process not handled very well by the people around you as they don't understand.
      I met Wayne Gardner a few years ago and found him to be a down to earth kind of guy.

    • @jbgmeyer
      @jbgmeyer 9 років тому

      No he crashed in 1986 on the Cahill Expressway before the tunnel was built. So he was going around the corner to the left (off camber) just about to go over circular key. At that time there was no barrier in the middle of the road and he slipped and went straight under an oncoming car. He was 19 nearly 20! At this stage he had completely got off the road and was only racing his RZ350 for his first year. But unfortunately his Mini did not pass the pink slip and he took my other brother's brand new RZ350 with standard tyres. He had a pile of tyres that he had tested and so knew what they could dol! He just went a little too hard on the standard tyres! Funny enough my French wife and I met Wayne on the street outside his place in Manly. AT the time she had no idea who he was, in fact thought he was just a mate! Then, as an antique and secondhand dealer, his wife rang me a few times to quote on some stuff to sell!. Yeah he was a nice guy.

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  9 років тому

      +John Meyer John thanks for sharing that story with me. It's very sad when a young person about to make their way in the world has their life taken away. I can imagine all the "what ifs" and "if onlys" that torture those left behind. If he'd been able to drive the mini that day he'd probably still be here.
      Yes I met up with Wayne in Manly as well. I took him to breakfast as I'd asked if he could appear at my son's inquest as an expert witness. He was very good and was happy to come on board ... then the inquest was canned because ... '"'well motorcycling is dangerous what do you expect" ... very shallow thinking people who don't understand.

    Besten Dank für das hervorragende Tutorial. Mit dieser genialen Unterstützung gelingt die Reparatur! Das Ersatzteil kostet etwa 20 Euro und bedarf eines zeitlichen Aufwandes von etwa drei Stunden. Als Alternative zum "Spannen" der Bowdenzüge mit Seiltrommel und Schraubenzieher bietet sich an, alle Kabel vorab an den vorgesehenen Stellen spannungslos einzuhängen (incl. der Wicklungen um die Seiltrommel; Trommel gegen Herausfallen aus dem Gehäuse sichern!) und das Spannen anschließend durch Überziehen und Einhängen des Seiles an einer der beiden Umlenkrollen zu bewerkstelligen. Das geht von Hand und ohne Werkzeug. Diese vorgespannte, quasi betriebsbereite Anordnung lässt sich dann ganz leicht montieren.

    Hi Scott. Many thanks for posting this excellent "how to" video on replacing the Vito window regulator. I've just successfully replaced both window regulators with ones I bought from ebay for £30 each. I ended up replacing the complete regulator units rather than a repair kit, as my first attempt was with a kit (that cost £12) and it didn't work for me. The reel was "almost" impossible to get in it's holder, then on it's first test the nipple on the end of the new cable shot-off. The whole fix was much easier thanks to your video. Mark

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  9 років тому

      +MrMarkBell Well done Mark. I'm glad I was able to help out. Down Under we pay about $1000 per side to have these things repaired. Usually the sliding clips on the rails are the parts that fail. I've only recently purchased new sliders for both sides from the UK for about $22 delivered. They'll go into my "Vito spares box" for the future. They always fail at the most inconvenient time so it's good to have them on hand.
      I'd urge anyone with a Vito W639 to buy the little sliders now and have them ready for the inevitable failure. It's a bloody rort by Mercedes as they're ripping off their customers who don't have the knowledge to fix these things.

    Hello Scott,
    many thanks for this very helpfull instruction from germany. I have shown the video and thougt, that it would be very easy. But I only thought.
    First I bought only the broken wire and the broken plastic gliders. But I was going crazy to get the wire in the roller. After 1 hours of smoking cigarettes, try a new way I bought a complete set of rails with gliders, completly fixedwire on a role and others. So I needed only 30minutes to mount it in the door. In summary with your video I have need 3 hours for my first time, but the next time with this experince I think it would be possible to repair it in 45min.And i'mnot a mechanic.
    Thanks again for this video.

      The failures I've had have always been the little sliders that run up and down the tracks. I'm onto my second W639 Vito and both have had this issue. I was quoted over a $1000 by the dealer to do one side. You don't build wealth handing over that sort of cash for work that's a bit fiddly but not difficult.
      I'm happy to help people take control and become self sufficient like our forefathers.

    what I found easier than levering the pulley wheel with a screw driver into its holder is to leave one of the black cable outers from it then insert the pulley into the housing with ease then stretch the outer cable into the correct location. I'll try and video that process on my phone and share it here. PS your videos are ace Scott.

    This is a really clear instruction. Thanks for that. Can I assume the right hand door is an exact mirror image? In other words, the motor will turn anti clockwise to wind the window up.

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  9 років тому +1

      Robert Webster Hi Robert ... yes it's a mirror image. What I did to confirm the direction was plug the connector back into the switch on the door panel after I'd removed all the components. I operated the switch to turn the window motor just to make sure I had the direction correct.Let us all know how you go with your repair. Don't take it to a dealer and pay and arm and a leg unless you're happy to contribute to their early retirement fund. Regards, Scott

      Did you know the trans Tasman migration has reversed? For the first time there are more Kiwis going home and Aussies heading to NZ than the other way?
      I think it's good as it's a wake up call to our Government. The NZ government has got the tax mix right which gives people incentive. 33% top marginal rate compared to our 49% and the Kiwi salaries are not far behind the Australian pay scales. Sometimes I wish I was a Kiwi.

    Hi Scott. I have completed this repair, and the window is working nice and quietly (some strands in one old cable had snapped). I find when I auto open the window it gets to the top, and then auto opens down to 1/2 way - as if there were an obstacle - its the child safetly cutting in. If I close it carefully manually (not auto) I can get it to the top fully. But if I let it touch the top a bit, it will auto open about 1cm. Then I just carefully get it to the top.
    I can live with this anomaly, but I just wondered whether you had any ideas about this?
    Thanks for this video. It's great.

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  9 років тому

      +Robert Webster Robert first thing I'd do is spray the rubber in the window frames with silicone spray ... not WD40/CRC but lubricating silicone spray. It appears the auto stop feature works off a pressure sensor rather than limit switch but I'm not absolutely sure. I do know it's important to keep everything sliding nicely. Try that first and post your test results.

      You need a knife or something with a thin edge to lever the centre bit out of the fitting to release. They can get stuck. I squirt of silicone spray can help.

    I have a question. I replaced my entire window regulator mechanism motor included. But the motor is 2 wired (no comfort function) while the connector on the vehicle is a 6-pin. Is it possible to still make it work? Because the ones with comfort function are way more expensive 😀.

      Dogan I don't know. Is it possible to swap the motors?
      Go to www.benzworld.org and ask the question as someone will probably know.

    Hi there,
    Thinking of doing the repair myself,
    My window is stuck in the closed position, is there anything i should do to the window before starting work on it or does it just need taping up to stop it coming down
    Many Thanks

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  9 років тому

      karl davies Karl you'll have to drag the window down to undo the clamps on the bottom. Once free tape it in the closed position.
      You may have to take off the cover from the motor to free up the cables to allow the window to be pulled down. Are you sure it's the regulator mechanisim that's failed? Could it be electrical? It seems if one of the cables or runners breaks the window always drops into the door.

    My problem was with the Nylon cable drum that the cable wraps around on the left hand door window. That drum has a gear spline that slides inside a matching gear spline on the drive motor spur gear. The gear spline sheared off the drum. I only did a partial disassembly of the unit so the cable was still wrapped around the cable drum and the drum was still inside of its nylon housing with cables intact.
    I carefully drilled 8 (from memory) 2mm Dia holes into the drum at the ends of each of the gear points full depth ~10mm. I then drilled into the drive motor gear (the spur gear not the worm gear that is in the motor shaft) The holes were carefully drilled into the corresponding locations.
    I had some large pop rivets who's wire mandrel was 2mm Dia I cut these into ~18mm lengths 8 in total and inserted them into the 8 holes in the cable drum to their full depth. There was enough meat between each pin so it should never fail. I then slid the drive motor complete with its spur gear and housing back over the protruding pins on the cable drum and tightened the mounting screws. and tested the motorised window before putting the covers back on. Its now six months on and the window works perfectly all up it took me and hour to repair I made up some spare pins, a sketch and note and a 2mm drill bit is a zip lock bag and put them in the drivers door for when it shears off. That way I will remember what and how I repaired. All up the repair took approx 1 hr.

      Richard that's impressive. Well done. I love stories like this. Improvisation is a skill few people have.
      The drums, cables and sliders are available individually quite cheap on eBay. I've got spares in my box ready for the next failure so I'm ready to go. Scott

    Hi, I've used yiour videos a few times to sort problems with my W639 and thanks, they are great! I now have a problem though that I can't find any info on your channel or anywhere else on the web. If anyone can help I would appreciate it! On my 008 W639 Viano 3.0 V6 I'm trying to replace the frontpipe (cat) from the turbo to the flexi just before the DPF? I've got it unbolted but can't get the thing out, I've unbolted the rear antiroll bar and dropped the gearbox right down at the rear but it wont go past the exhaust manifold. Do you have any idea whether the manifold needs to come off? I don't want to attempt removing the rusty bolts if its not necessary.

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  2 роки тому

      Thanks. I'm not familiar with the V6 in the Vito but I do have the same engine in my W204 C320CDI. On that car you have to jack the engine up a bit to remove the RHS engine mount. You also have to remove the alternator. I'd investigate that idea. Unbolt the RHS engine mount and raise the engine on that side as it might give enough clearance to get the CAT out.

    Hi Scott - great video btw. I've replaced the little plastic regulator cog 3 times now on my drivers side window. It breaks every couple of years. This time when I ordered the kit to get the little plastic regulator it has come with the slot for the cable insert from the opposite direction. It seems like its for the opposite door. I'm wondering if I can use the same kit but reverse the top and bottom cable (if they fit). My concern is that if I reverse the cable entry to the regulator housing the cables may not fit. Can you or anyone offer a suggestion here? thx :)

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  4 роки тому

      Thanks Russell. I'd not considered using parts from the other door. Trying to make the opposite door kit fit will probably cause you no end of frustration. Probably safer to get the correct drum and cables. Cheers Scott

    Greetings from Germany.
    Thank you for this informative Video. I did the repair today and your Video was very helpfull.
    I wonder if it is not to outrageous to ask you if you know a solution for another Problem my Vito has developed.
    Because the front passenger door on my Lhd Vito can no longer be opened. Not from the inside or the central locking system and not even with the emergency key.
    The mercedes dealer says he has to press the door open with a hydraulik system, but it is possible that the door will be destroyed.
    I would be very thankfull if you or somebody who read this comment, has a tip for me

    • @ScottElliott152

      Thank you Jorg. I would try removing the RH front guard/fender to see if you can access the door hinges to unbolt them. The guard is made of plastic. Replacing the plastic guard would be cheaper than replacing the door. Report back with your findings. Scott

      Hello Scott,
      Thank you for your idea.
      I did it a different way today. First I removed the round rubber plug you can see when you open the sliding door. Than you can see the two srews wich hold the closing hook.After that i removed the B-pillar cover and the seat belt. The srews are srewed into square nuts wich are wellded to a plate. I sawed the lower nut and srew off with a jigsaw and the upper one with a iron sawblade. It took me several hours because there is little space. But in the end the door was open, without damaging expensive parts.
      When i install the new door lock, i will weld two nuts to the closing hook and screw the two srews in from the B-pillar side. So when this happens again, i will only have to screw out the two srews and the door will open.
      Greatings Jörg

    Hi Scott, I'd had a partial crack at the repair after my cables got snared, I got a repair kit, all the cables, plastic parts etc, but it got put on the back burner. I had my Vito in for an MOT and figured I'd just get the spanner monkey's to do it. Came back with the kit untouched, apparently it was the most complicated window system. Sounds like they couldn't be frakking arsed so I'm doing it myself after seeing your video, how complicated can a pulley system actually be, my dad picked up the bill so I've not had had a chance to see if the cheeky twats charged for it.

    • @ScottElliott152
      @ScottElliott152  6 років тому

      Rob the mechanism is no more complicated than other vehicles. The spanner monkeys couldn't be stuffed to investigate to understand it. The issue I've found is the guys in the shops plug the diagnostics in, find the faulty components and replace them. That's all they're good for. Problem solving is something they don't do. With the high cost of labour we can't really afford to pay these guys for hours of investigation time hence the importance of taking control and DIY'ing.
