- New idea for offset smokers to eliminate hot spots. It's like a merge of Goldee's elbow and Franklin's collector.
Sorry for the poor video production quality. This video is about the content. I hope to do better quality videos in the future.
Smart idea. I’m interested in seeing how it works. Thanks for sharing.
My initial testing looks promising. I have a second video of a test fire posted. Check my channel to view.
This has very similar ideas to the one I'm building, its so awesome to see you doing it. I love the idea of the little plate in the collector to help with the thermal stress, I'm totally going to steal that for mine too, thanks!
If you haven't already, be sure to checkout my second video of this smoker.
My smoker is finally complete. Weather and time permitting, I will be putting together a video this weekend of testing, tuning (adjustable throat opening feature) and possibly a cook.
If you are doing anything similar to this, I recommend waiting on my next video. The thermal dynamics/airflow of this design are very different than a traditional offset, so i'm figuring it out as I go. The only thing close is the Goldee's smoker. I will hopefully have some better engineering info in the next video. Also, I have several other new features I think folks will really like.
Just a thought... If you have a chance, you should flip the firebox door, putting the hinges on the left side. She's a beautiful build and your craftsmanship is a work of art!
You are a genius!!! I love it. looking forward to your cooks on this beast.
Nice build
Interesting idea with the diffuser! I hope it disperses the heat well, I’m looking forward to see future tests!
Good looking pit and can’t wait to see how it works. Keep them coming and be safe
Awesome build and great idea. Looking forward to how it works. Greetings from Spain.
Cool and unique design. Should work great! Very nice work!
Thank you very much!
Nice idea, can't wait to see the results!
Looks cool, looking forward to seeing it in action!
I'm building a 120 gallon right now. I was debating on using the goldee's elbow. I was planning on adding a collector. I love the idea of a diffuser. Can't wait to see the next video.
I would like to see your project, I'm debating this also, I hear lots about Goldies elbow, but no one discusses the size of the elbow, any help you can give would be appreciated.
There's a video on youtube about the Goldees smoker where the guy said it was a 6" elbow and a 6" stack. Looks about right to me.
I like the idea…always wondered why no one did this. Really interested to see how it works!
I got a 24x60 tank and gonna build a smoker, and this nice idea.
Hopefully I'll have another video out by the end of May with my smoker dialed in. At that point I should be able to give some dimensions for what works or doesn't work.
Dude! Very nice work. I am jealous.
Thx
Looks good dude! I'm almost done with my smoker using the same concept, just implemented a little different. I love to share and compare how they cook!
Sounds great!
I see what you are saying! Good work.
That’s a great idea! I’m building a 500 gallon myself I’m curious to see how this works
beautyfull😍
Thx
Interested to hear how this qorks
The more I think about your idea of dispersing the heat I really think you’re on to something! I’ve built two smokers, one is a 60 gallon reverse flow which I really like, the other is a 288 gallon offset on a trailer which I’m on my 3rd modification to the throat baffle and I’m still not satisfied. The Goldee’s elbow seems like a horrible design to me but I’m just a backyard dude so what do I know, I’ve got a 110 gallon propane tank for my 3rd build and I think I’ll wait until I see how your diffuser works! Seems like a brilliant idea to me:)
Thanks. I hope to have a video of the diffuser in action within a few weeks. This build is taking WAY longer than I expected. Cutting, fitting and shaping 1/4" steel is slow going for me. Hats off to you for building two and being willing to build a third.
🔥🔥🔥
That's is really nice I'm building one as well what size angle are you using for the racks inside I caint tell from video if it's 1 or 2in
The rack supports are 1 1/4" angle. The racks will be 1" square tube.
@KerryMooney-rl6oh nice inwas thinking about sqaure tubing also to sit right in side the angle
Great video, just what I needed, today is my first day RETIRED and I plan on building my first smoker build.... How did you figure out the dimensions on the throat from the fire box to the cook chamber? I just subscribed...
Congrats on the retirement. I will be retiring later this year.
The throat opening is current 27 sq. in.. That is roughly the area of 6" ID pipe (Goldees). I figured that would be a good starting point. It is about 150% the area of my stack area. If the smoker is slow to respond to fire changes, then I can easily expand the throat with a plasma cutter. The top of the door is well below the top of the firebox, on purpose to capture the convected heat. This should cause the heat to travel into the diffuser under pressure. I expect the firebox to push heat and the stack to draw. It should move a lot of air.
This smoker is taking way longer than I expected, but hopefully I'll have the first fire in it within a couple of weeks, with a video soon to follow.
@@KerryMooney-rl6oh , Good morning, Thank you. Ok, I understand, I will be watching and waiting. But your smoker is looking good.
Nice job. Glad you are feeding wood on wrong end. Be a leader not a follower (even if it was a ooops). Lol
Swear you were just thinking outside of the box. 👍👍
Thanks 👍
Hope you can patent that sucker before one of the better known UA-cam "content creators" steals this from you.
Lol, thx, but no interest in a patent. I posted the idea to give back to you tube and hopefully help the built it myself folks make a better smoker.
@@KerryMooney-rl6oh Awesome! Eager to see pics of finished cooker.
Put a plate and the end of the collector to shoot the heat straight up otherwise i think you will still have a hot spot
Be sure to check out video #2. No hot spot, but I have some tuning to do.
hold the camera still
