I'd long seen pictures of this arcade game, but never actually played it. I really should have tried it sooner, because it is an excellent run and gun shooter! It's based on an animated TV series, although unlike TMNT, I don't believe it was ever shown in the UK.
Despite being unfamiliar with the source material, it certainly didn't prevent me from enjoying the game; it's a total blast. It boasts stellar production values, with top quality graphics, animation and sound. This carries over to the gameplay, which felt far more balanced than a lot of other coin-op titles.
Sadly, the game never got released outside of the arcades, and since the show never had the appeal of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, nor received the same level of exposure, it's not a game I ever recall seeing in the wild. It's definitely one of the best examples of the genre, so do yourself a favour and go play Wild West C.O.W. Boys!

This is a really badass game. This and the cartoon should have been HUGE back then. Glad to see someone play this game. Old shooting games like this should make a comeback.

Yeah, people should have had a better appreciation for western genre for the longest time just like other genres. Hopefully Red Dead Redemption is helping to spark that love for western genre again.

It's like a lost art-form.
It was an art form, especially given the constraints of the hardware of the day. Clearly, the Konami Xexex hardware on which the game is based packed some muscle.

I loved this game. it was one of my favorite finds in the arcade in New Brunswick when I visited my cousin in the summer back in the day.
Wow. Everything looks really, really good for '92. The sound design is pretty awesome! I don't recall seeing another game in the genre where you could jump into the background of the stage to elevate your character. It kind of reminds me of some of the levels in Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow Over Mystara, but obviously that game came out much later.

I saw this in an arcade at my favorite mall. It was right next to a Bucky O'Hare machine. I was surprised that either game existed.

I remember watching the cartoon on ABC saturday mornings when I was a child. I remember hearing it had an arcade game a while back and it was supposedly great. Today I finally watch gameplay and I would agree.
What the hell has happened to you to fall so far from grace, Konami...
The costs of AAA game development continue to rise higher with each successive console generation. Konami just isn't interested in trying to keep up anymore. It sucks for gamers but, from a business perspective, it makes no sense to invest an obscene amount of money into a business venture that (outside of Metal Gear) has had a low return on investment (ROI) for them. Or even _no_ ROI. Why would you continue down that path when you can just make mobile games for less money and higher ROI?
Most of Konami's talent is long gone. The Goemon team is at Good-Feel now and are allegedly making a spiritual successor for Switch. The guys who made Suikoden and Castlevania have all gone independent and now mostly rely on crowdfunding. Hideo Kojima left Konami and now has his own studio. The last time Konami tried to make a console game on its own, we got Contra Rogue Corps.
While greed is certainly part of the equation, the main reason is that it just wasn't financially feasible for them to continue sinking money into a costly and highly competitive business where they weren't seeing anything in the way of ROI outside of one big franchise. And even if they wanted to return now, they can't. 98% of their talent is gone and Konami doesn't exactly have the best reputation in terms of employee treatment (e.g. violence, verbal abuse, privacy infringements, etc), so recruiting fresh blood would be an enormous uphill battle.
@@SpearM3064 if they aren't going to try anymore then they shouldn't dmca fan projects that have more effort. But alas, Mammon has taken over Konami's soul...

Since I've got no comments on gameplay, I might as well show what little I know of the series itself since your description says you're unfamiliar with it:
You actually picked a minor character to play as. Marshall Moo Montana, Cowlorado Kid, and Dakota Dude are the main trio. They added Buffalo Bull to make it an even four players - I find it odd they'd put him in the first player slot rather than 4th. As for more changes, I THINK Moo is the only one of the main trio who normally uses a gun regularly in the cartoon. But then, that's one change that works better for an arcade game anyway.
Saddle Sore and Boothill Buzzard? Recurring villains in the show - I'd go so far as to say they're the Rocksteady and Bebop equivalent. Sheriff Terrorbull (the first boss) also shows up a lot in the show, but he's a much larger deal... for a reason that gets obvious if you see the show, but I won't outright say it.
I don't know why Boothill Buzzard outright dies in this one as I'm told he survived the entire TV series.
Five Card Cud (they call him Five Card Stud here) is a villainous gambler. Only part I know of that episode is that Cowlorado went undercover to get on his riverboat.
I don't know who that unnamed spider boss is in the fourth stage sadly.
I'm kind of surprised Skull Duggery isn't a level boss. I THINK he shows up in Boothill Buzzard's stage as a miniboss, but it's been a while since I've seen anything related to the show so I could be off.
I don't know why the attract mode uses the outro from the show rather than the intro.
And that about exhausts what I can tell you of the show.
Which is impressive, so my hat goes off to you. It's interesting this and "Bucky O'Hare" got done by Konami. Did they go on a "Cartoon Spree" to license whatever sold to kids?
@@theodorehsu5023 Konami did quite a bit of licensed stuff. I did a quick check and I'm seeing X-Men and G.I. Joe on their arcade resume as well.
@@FrostyTheDragon I remember those and played “X-Men” too. Capcom had the rights to do the fighting game version, “X-Men: Children of the Atom,” which lady for “Marvel Super Heroes,” “X-Men vs. Street Fighter,” “Marvel Vs. Street Fighter,” and “Marvel vs. Capcom.”

It's a shame this game was never ported to a home system, it would be great on the Saturn.
For the first time since I found out about this game, this would have been for the SNES and Genesis in 1994 if it were ported for home consoles. Maybe licensing was expired sort of how license expired for Batman with Konami.
