CRAFTSMAN 928 SNOWBLOWER AUGER DOESNT WORK STRIPPED WORM GEAR IMPELLER SHAFT FLANGE BUSHING REMOVAL

  • When the engines running and the auger lever is engaged, only the impeller spins. The auger blades do not spin, turn or move. The 4 shear pins bolts are intact. The proper procedure for fixing this is to split the snow blower in half and remove the entire auger assembly.

    Had to give you a 👍. Thanks for taking the time to make this. Helped me get my machine fixed amidst this 1/12/2024 Midwestern snowstorm.

    Thank you very much. I was intimidated and wasn't sure how hard it would be to remove the blower assembly. What you nice people do is make this world a much better place. Again thank you for your time and effort.

    Got to love it when a bushing/bearing decides to self-destruct lol Today i sold a Toro push mower for $100 today, which for me was an easy flip, all it needed was a tune up and a blade, i've never sold a lawn mower in January lol Snowblowers look complicated to work on, anything MTD or made by MTD is complicated and a pain to work on. Also great video Henry!

      Thanks buddy, anything you're not familiar with seems complicated or intimidating. As you know I'm sure, an engines an engine. Once you crack anything open, and do it a few times, nothing to it bro.

    That's the most over looked part of a snowblower that people never address by changing the lube. I found some people actually try to squirt bearing grease into the plug hole! Any lube is better than no lube of course, but bearing grease will not stay on the gears for very long. I always used synthetic gear lube and never had problems.

    • @MowersNBlowers
      @MowersNBlowers  2 місяці тому

      It’s what they used when they didn’t invent synthetic yet

    I found a replacement gear selector cable for my Craftsman snow blower on a site called e replacement parts (I separated the URL because the comments should not have external links). I don't know if they have the bushing for your exact model, but if they don't you can feel discouraged.
    My snow blower is about 20 years old; I'm looking at an electric replacement next year.

    Those Auger gears look pretty worn to me. The center of the gear is concave...

    • @MowersNBlowers

      Augers are just the metal blades and hardly get any wear because they just move snow to the center. The worm gear was fine they’re made concave. Here’s the fix

    Pay attention to the part number of the Craftsman. They usually use the same part number with maybe an add on number(s) of the actual manufacturer like MTD. You might have to go the manufacturer's web site for the bushing. And if so it might be cheaper.

    • @MowersNBlowers
      @MowersNBlowers  5 років тому +1

      Yes a 31 series MTD, I'm very familiar. At the end of the video, it shows the purchase of the part for $8.

    • @coast2coast00
      @coast2coast00 2 роки тому +1

      They are $7 now from the manufacturer, it seems most of the replacement parts are cheaper just buying them from MTD.

    It's odd to see that kinda of end bushing wear without one of the shafts being bent or the impeller bearing shot. I know it's a PIA and you're flipping these machines, but I'd pull the impeller off the shaft and see if it's true and straight.

    • @MowersNBlowers
      @MowersNBlowers  5 років тому

      Good point, I didnt see any obvious signs of imbalance, I found it odd too. I'll definately check both shafts and see. Thanks man. Hope you subscribed and I look forward to seeing your comments in the future

    This morning a towel got into my Columbia impeller and the engine shut down. Tried to get out the towel but eventually gave up even that because the engine would not start anyway. Is this thing a write-off? I live in the city and don’t have a good work area like you

    • @MowersNBlowers
      @MowersNBlowers  Рік тому

      Remove the towel, even cutting it up in a million pieces, get it all out. Pull the rope slowly a bunch of times until it feels free. If it still doesn’t start, you may have broken the key on the crankshaft. A key is like $2! But labor to get the flywheel off is a pain.

    Why would the impeller work correctly but not the auger?

    • @MowersNBlowers
      @MowersNBlowers  Рік тому +2

      Impeller is powered by the belt, then a geared shaft goes to a gearbox to power the auger. If the shaft gears are stripped, the auger doesn’t spin even though the impeller is.

    • @TheAxecutioner
      @TheAxecutioner Рік тому

      @@MowersNBlowers my 05 Craftsman 31am63tf799 seems to be both impeller & auger are powered by one belt so after tearing things apart a bit, i think that the gears in the gear box are stripped, even tho no shear pins have come apart. I'm trying to get the auger seperated from the shaft, but there seems to be a pressed bearing at the end of the shaft that won't let me get the auger out from the housing. Shit.
