White Smoke can also appear on older, carburetted cars, if the Air/Fuel Mixture (A/F Ratio) is too lean. This increases horsepower and high end torque, and the engine will use less fuel from its tank. But the engine will run much hotter, which means its likely to overheat with stock radiator on a warm summer day. Ratio should Not be lower than 13,2... Black smoke indicates a very rich A/F Ratio, leading to a cooler, more driveable engine with quite enough low-end torque and less stressed parts. A rich adjusted carb will make less mileage per gallon, but it doesn't burn the spark plugs so often. Ratio should not exeed 16 I used to have a 47cc moped from 1985, of course carbed (1.1 CFM) generating 1,5 Hp and Running ~30 Mph (45 Km/h). It wasn't tuneable, so i just drilled some holes in the airfilter cover and closed them with duct tape till it run well. It was a 2-stroke, and i had to change the spark plug 1 to 2 times a Year. Of course, two stroke engines burn their plugs way faster than 4-stroke, so i think it was set quite rich, maybe 14,5 to 15...
I found this video at just the right time. I get white "smoke" when I start my van up, but it goes away real quick once I drive. Good to know it's nothing to worry about.
I put a potato in my exhaust because I didn't like the white smoke that was coming out. I get a little lightheaded and sleepy while driving but it's been fine so far
My Ford Capri used to burn tons of oil and smoked blue on startup, in August i changed the valve stem seals, since then oil consumption has slowly come down to almost zero! the job only cost me 19 Euros for the seals and i got a valve spring compressor from a friend and i had it done in about 6 hours of work ( the engine is a 12v OHV V6 )
Jim Allen My Capri has the 3.0 British Essex series engine, they were never offered in the US as for example my 1975 3.0 Capri is faster than the anemic 302 that was available in 1975, the 2.6 and 2.8 engines were German made Cologne series engines.

Well, if your car is a Trabant then you've got a 2-stroke engine. That means you gotta mix the 2-stroke oil and the petrol together. I guess that means no messy oil changes.
a bad PCV system will also make smoke because the crankcase is not getting ventilated properly because sometimes people are too cheap to change the PCV valve and the air cleaner on a regular basis

The head gasket on my '97 Jeep Wrangler broke, and I still drove 20 km to the next garage followed by a white cloud, pausing every now and then to refill the rad. Those AMC/Chrysler 4 cyls were quite tough! Very quick throttle response and nice sound too, more like a V8 than a 4
One note, on older Honda's theres something called an automatic transmission modulator that operates with vacuum, when the modulator fails it can suck trans fluid into the intake manifold causing white, sharp scented smoke (it also super cleans the engine and will slowly result in running low on trans fluid). You can tell if the modulator failed by simply chking the vacuum line for fluid, there shouldnt be any.
What if the "ambient temperature" is fairly cold (say 0 C/32 Fahrenheit or a few degrees colder)? Could you then expect white smoke even after having driven 20-30 minutes? Also, is the fact that the car is not leaking/loosing coolant a not as reliable sign of possible blown head gasket if it is winter and colder than in the summer when it is wormer? Thanks in advance!
1: Which type of smoke is the worst to have? 2: That blue smoke looks like you're hitting the video game nos 🤣 3: You're awesome @CarThrottle, and can you try to edit subtitles in your videos? I'm having a hard time processing the information.
I had a strange white smoke encounter a few weeks ago. I always use E10 95 octane but this one time only E5 octane 100 was available. My Aygo started to blow out white smoke like crazy and it stopped once the E5 Octane 100 fuel was out of the system and I got back to E10 Octane 95. That was a nerve breaker.
That first point was wrong, it isn't excess fuel. It's because there isn't enough air relative to fuel so the fuel is not able to completely combust, soot is a biproduct of incomplete combustion and so that's what it is.
i have soot build up on my rear bumper and window. how should i go about fixing this problem and much will it cost. thanks for any suggestions or tips....
Before I owned my current car, it was parked due to the last one. funnily enough, it wasn't the gasket itself, but a hole in the actual alloy head, Chem-I-Weld went in, hole got sealed and the engine still works to this day
As an engine mechanic, he greatly over simplified the white smoke portion of the video. In some cases, yes, it is only water vapor. But if you get a large enough coolant leak, even then it won't produce the large amounts of white smoke shown in the video. In fact, most of the time, you won't even know that you have a large coolant leak into your cylinders until you get the warning light on, telling you that your coolant level is low, followed rapidly by your engine overheating. You can only get the huge level of white smoke produced from a big diesel engine (like the cement truck in the video) if there is a large oil leak from the turbo, allowing oil to be burned in the combustion chamber. Or in case of the Chrysler 300 shown, a blown head gasket, allowing oil in to the cylinders.
No smoke. Since it's electric it doesn't need spark plugs or pistons. It's like an RC car. Have you ever seen a working electric RC car produce smoke? (Tesla is basically just a beefed up RC car)
Sean Rose my rc car smoked once and then this weird orange gas looking stuff started coming out of it then it stopped working for good Rymden2 was joking btw
A vehicle can have an oil burning or mixture control problem but you still may not have any visible emissions coming out the tail pipe. This can happen because the catalytic converter is doing its job and cleaning the exhaust before it comes out. The only way you may become aware of these problems is either by getting a check engine light and trouble codes or by having the spark plugs foul and having to add oil all the time. Further if you run a engine too long with these problems you can damage the converter. Then after that you will begin seeing visible emissions.
In Florida, especially on a very humid summer morning. Water will even come out the tail pipes. Especially if you let your car sit cold for a few days in Florida you’ll see a lot of water come out
White smoke is very common during winter due to the cold weather. It is even more common when driving on LPG - car is smoking like hell during the winter and in the summer there is no smoke at all.
That's good. Electric cars are never meant to produce smoke, hence why they're in the zero emissions VED band, resulting in free road tax. #wereinthemoney
Sup guys, I got a quick question. I have a 2006 Mitsubishi Evo IX and all the performance mods I've done are just a cold air intake, a Tomei turbo and a catback muffler delete. The rest is stock and I've just done a lot of cosmetic work. From time to time though, when I start the engine, it emits thick sky blue colored smoke from the exhaust. It seems to dissipate when I drive but when the car comes to a stop and it idles, it makes knocking noises under the driver's seat and the blue smoke comes out again. Plz help.
Saw you guys comment on Boostedboiz's 100k video earlier, that made my day lol. Nice video though! Love these little informative bits, always a pleasure to watch 👍
One note about blue smoke. If it's coming from a car with a rotary engine, it probably just means that there's a fair bit of two stroke oil premixed in with the gas and is nothing to be concerned about. Other than that or in a two stroke engine, yeah, blue smoke is bad.
Today my dad's 200 series landcruiser diesel going up a highway hill today and was absolutely pumping out thick blue smoke the whole way up the hill, when we were at the top of the hill there was let's say a 3 Metre Square trail of blue smoke all the way down the hill, people had to change lanes it must have killed them. The car ain't that old, after that we gave it a good rev out up some more hills until it cleared and now it's been fine.
They mentioned modified cars can cause blue smoke. My vehicle has 177,256 miles on it and it's a 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i no turbo. I have a long cold air intake on it and a dual 3"catback exhaust on it. Due to head gasket issues, I ordered a used low mile JDM engine which was parted out to put on my stock engine since some parts were slightly different (according to my mechanic) and didn't fit or align correctly (I guess it was due to it being a foriegn import, not everything matched as direct fit or they couldve lied to me). Since the head gaskets repair I still noticed the white smoke and was told it's nothing but I feel my compression is bad due to loss of power, bad fuel economy readings on my dash board. My average miles per gallon used to be 24.5 and has dramatically dropped between 18.4 to 15.6 to 12.3 to 8.7 to as low as 5.6 but is currently now at 9.8 as January 21, 2021. I also have a cover on my cold air intake filter, had my valve cover repaired due to oil leaks in spark plug area, fuel injectors are surprisingly clean and I do use Lucas brand fuel injector conditioner every other fuel refill if that makes a difference or if anyone find that a factor in order to give their input on my issue. The spark plugs are less than five months old currently and my spark plug wires were replaced summer 2020. My ignition coil (only one) for this car is about a year old now. My Walker catylic converter is also a year old with a 5-Year warranty on it. My two o2 sensors are functioning normally and my entire exhaust system works well and has been replaced as time went on within the past year and a half roughly. The mass airflow sensor was replaced this summer 2020. I feel my compression is causing the issue and the mechanic mentioned that there is blue smoke and that the car is or maybe burning a little oil. Idk everyone says it's okay it won't hurt but I want the issue corrected period and get back the power this car use to have. Also, should my valves and pistons been fixed, cleaned or replaced when I did my head gaskets with that used low mile JDM engine I mentioned above?????????????? Feel free to drop any suggestions and comments people. Constructive criticism is welcomed!!!!
The conditions under which blue smoke occur tell you what part needs replacing. On acceleration, it's one thing, constantly, it's another. I've forgotten what those are.
My only problem is no mention of what happens with diesel engines when this happens as you can get much more of a disaster when something leaks into the cylinders, especially oil as its the most common cause of diesel engine runaway. That and a petrol/gasoline engine would more likely backfire from a rich air fuel mixture.
Also getting some black smoke from my 1.9 TDI Golf 4. The previous owner installed a power-box thing so it injects more fuel. But from this video I see that I shouldn't really worry.
Is it bad to flush dollars down your toilet? Because you're flushing dollars out of your tailpipe. Oh sure, small numbers like 22mpg vs 28mpg are not huge - but it would take your gas bill from $2k/yr to $2545/yr if you drive a decent amount... it'd be worth it to me to fix it and see how much mileage improved.
Yes because you get "bore wash" you fire that much fuel in it washes the oil off the bores, halving the engines life. That's why you're oil level never goes down the injectors are topping you're sump up 👍
i saw two cars pouring out white smoke this morning. it was 70 degrees out so it was definitely NOT harmless steam. unfortunately, i couldn't catch them in the traffic and tell them to get it looked after. one less Isuzu and one less VW Passat on the road though, so it's not a complete loss
blue smoke means replace cylinders, dummy white smoke from engine bay means replace headgasket, dummy the white / black smoke from under the car means check if theres any exauhust pipe left
Responsible motorists will ensure they take their emanations home with them by connecting the exhaust pipe to the passenger cabin. I think that would make things much better for everyone
with 2 strokes white smoke usually means its running rich, if you lean it out the smoke should go away. personally i set my go kart motor so it puffs a little smoke when i let off the gas at the end of the straight, just to be safe

Nice video though! Love these little informative bits, always a pleasure to watch 👍
ROLLIN COAL 🤙🏼
Thanks CT! This has put my mind at rest
What about when flames come out of my exhaust? Wait....that's antilag.
One note about blue smoke. If it's coming from a car with a rotary engine, it probably just means that there's a fair bit of two stroke oil premixed in with the gas and is nothing to be concerned about. Other than that or in a two stroke engine, yeah, blue smoke is bad.
No smoke = electric car

Today my dad's 200 series landcruiser diesel going up a highway hill today and was absolutely pumping out thick blue smoke the whole way up the hill, when we were at the top of the hill there was let's say a 3 Metre Square trail of blue smoke all the way down the hill, people had to change lanes it must have killed them. The car ain't that old, after that we gave it a good rev out up some more hills until it cleared and now it's been fine.
Green smoke means i have to watch this again because i forgot why i was watching.
Constructive criticism is welcomed!!!!
everything is okay..
Planet: Am i a joke to you?
The conditions under which blue smoke occur tell you what part needs replacing. On acceleration, it's one thing, constantly, it's another. I've forgotten what those are.

My only problem is no mention of what happens with diesel engines when this happens as you can get much more of a disaster when something leaks into the cylinders, especially oil as its the most common cause of diesel engine runaway. That and a petrol/gasoline engine would more likely backfire from a rich air fuel mixture.
Im getting black smoke from my tdi remmaped , is that bad ? ;)
alex 57030 running rich,unburned diesel
That's why you're oil level never goes down the injectors are topping you're sump up 👍
A good percentage of the diesel you are buying is being wasted.
i saw two cars pouring out white smoke this morning. it was 70 degrees out so it was definitely NOT harmless steam. unfortunately, i couldn't catch them in the traffic and tell them to get it looked after. one less Isuzu and one less VW Passat on the road though, so it's not a complete loss
black smoke is more power in a diesel
No, it isn't. Black smoke, like was said in this video, is unburned fuel. Unburned fuel = wasted power.
On diesels
It doesn't matter if its diesel or not. Black means unburned fuel.
On diesels when u remap them to give them more power it forces them to overfuel
"Overfuel" means using more fuel than your engine can burn. Black smoke is not power, it is unused fuel.
blue smoke means replace cylinders, dummy
white smoke from engine bay means replace headgasket, dummy
the white / black smoke from under the car means check if theres any exauhust pipe left
I got an Volkswagen add on this video hahahahah
lol I learnt heaps from this video now I know why my truck suffocates me with blue and white smoke☺
Responsible motorists will ensure they take their emanations home with them by connecting the exhaust pipe to the passenger cabin. I think that would make things much better for everyone
great!! nothing destructive.. don't get me wrong, I enjoy all the videos.
My E46 just blew a head gasket today :(
Wiz Khalifa BMW=Bring My Wallet, sucks to be you
yep sure does
M so sorry to hear that, I hope it gets well soon.
with 2 strokes white smoke usually means its running rich, if you lean it out the smoke should go away. personally i set my go kart motor so it puffs a little smoke when i let off the gas at the end of the straight, just to be safe
What does it mean if I have no smoke... or an exhaust D:
that you dont drive a proper car
No worries, horses don't typically have mufflers.
TheEpicTurban, it means that you are sitting on your couch.
It means unless you have a P something D tesla you have no car
+Daniel Bell Should've said camels.
Black smoke can also be caused by remaps, mine intentionally runs a bit rich to prevent detination due to boost pressure
If I'm a vaper should I get a Subaru ?
nah, get a TDI VW and roll coal
Alive Plebism Yup. White smoke inside, black smoke outside.
vabu94 cant get more black n white
Nah, vaping is strictly for the beanie hat even in Summer VW brigade... so as you were.
Blue smoke in a diesel can also be unburnt fuel. Not always blow by.
In Russia, the car smokes you.
