Behind the scenes of every favorite genre franchise, from Doctor Who to Star Wars, from Star Trek to Ghostbusters, there are and have always been a number of controversial figures. Behind the scenes of Sonic the Hedgehog, that controversial figure is Ken Penders.
Ken Penders significantly expanded the Sonic the mythos in the Archie Comics, where he served as the main writer for years. His run produced the most memorable and unexpected stories Sonic, and Knuckles for that matter, ever participated in. However, he is perhaps more famous for his part in a lawsuit with Archie comics, which would see him come out on top, and Archie comics losing the rights to more than 200 characrthers Penders created.
In this interview, we will leave no stone unturned and discuss the comics, the lawsuit, and the movies with Ken Penders.

I always thought that the tone of Sonic should be that of Dragonball and One Piece, that it can be edgy at times but mostly light hearted
Sterling Obikoya Sonic has been exposed to so many different tones that he has several identities. He is a character not tied to 1 way of doing things.

I said it in the first part. He's still coming out with ideas for his "app". Unimportant details. It's never coming out. That, it has traced images and stock images from what he showed. Also don't tell Penders about visual novels... or Homestuck.

All I see is an unoriginal narcissistic old man who's life still revolves around Sonic, he just can't let go of the past or try to be original.
No rational person would go with such an asinine idea and design of a series.
The saddest part is, this guy may seem awful as an artist but he's actually ironically decent when it comes to drawing humans specifically. Inorder to succeed it's important to make the best use of your talents, this guy wasn't fit to lead and has always been a control freak, he has generally always attempted to be the jack of all trades instead of focusing on what he's actually good at. He can come up with some genuinely interesting ideas but takes it way too far every time and needs a tight leash, he's sort of like the bootleg George Lucas of Sonic, but with the mentality of cwchan. I may not like the guy, but it's a shame to see him dedicate his time to such a dead end.
As for the ordeal with Archie, I don't recall whether or not he had a choice in the matter, but I agree they're corrupt however it wasn't worth the battle just so he could use his precious characters or get royalties, taking away something that brightened the lives of thousands just for himself alone, that isn't "justice" it's just selfish, a human law and favorable circumstances he exploited. He should've been the bigger man and took the L. I guess he was so unoriginal he was incapable of thinking up anything past all the Knuckles recolors he made. I didn't like the direction Flynn took with the series(I'm sure Ken felt exactly the same way), so I could personally care less about it's cancellation. The corrupt Archie excuse doesn't work with Sonic Chronicles also, it seems he didn't even play the game, some guy on a forum just pointed out similarities and he seems to of assumed it was completely the same, at the most they just used a few of his ideas for the basis and went their own direction with it, it was more like a nod/reference to the comic's source material then an intended raw copy and paste. His reaction to Chronicles was the equivalent to a child throwing a tantrum, "IT'S MINE!!!!!!!", he seems to believes he's entitled from some references as if he owned Echidnas as his original creation, the game tried to reference a lot of Sonic material generally(Pretty hypocritical with his own logic, given how he blatantly copied). Just like with Archie, I personally didn't like Chronicles direction with the lore, so I was content that he ensured it wouldn't get a sequel at the time, but it isn't about me nor should it be about just him.
No matter how you look at the guy, he's the embodiment of "original the character do not steal!!!" and "MY WAY OR THE HIGHWAY!!!", he's a manchild and a special snowflake that thinks he craps gold. Anything positive about him can quickly be drowned out by his both continuous and past histories or the countless times he's exposed himself over Twitter, such as his many meltdowns, especially amusing when he made multiple sock puppet accounts to defend himself, and lamented he wished he could've wrote about the underage furry characters' sex lives. He even stated he thought Avengers Endgame was a reference to his Sonic comic, hopefully that one was a joke at the very least although given his history I'm highly doubtful. If his new story happens to be mentally impaired enough(That's if he ever even finishes it, lol), he may have a cwc sonichu effect cult following, I feel that's the only way he could remotely succeed with such a project.
Extra: If you found his movie pitch a good laugh, search for "Ken Penders Lost Ones Trailer" and "Sonic super special 7".

To be fair, that's not really reinventing the wheel either. It's a somewhat new market/distribution method, but that per-chapter style is actually very big right now in international Light Novel/Fiction publication & translation.
And honestly, more power to him, given that he's trying to set the app/company up himself. All the risk and/or reward will be on him.
You guys should do an interview with everyone else who worked on the Archie Sonic Comics I need the WHOLE story! Michael Gallagher, Scott Fulop, Victor Gorelick(RIP February 2020 he just passed -_-), J.Freddy Gabrie, Patrick "Spaz" spaziante, Karl Bollers these guys were around since the beginning. There's a lot of different writers and artists that worked on the comic over time.
Its even worse that he has the "SONIC LIVE" Issue framed.
It's a damn good comic issue, and it's got his son on the cover. He's got every right to be proud! 💪

are you kidding it sounded pretty cool i’d love to watch any animated sonic movie and Sat-am fans would have something which I believe the fan base has grown because my little brother introduced me to the Sat-am Sonic series 3 Netflix and we watched every episode about 10 times and we seen the anime movie several times
@@IsaiahAmos017 If you like SatAM, good for you. But personally, I've always seen it as being too serious and boring for a Sonic series, and Armageddon would've only exasperated that problem.

@@maverickay5807 I'm not one of those people that thought "Shadow the Hedgehog was bad because it featured guns" or "Sonic 06's plot was terrible because Sonic died", but I've watched a handful of SatAM episodes and it was just _booooring._ At least with Shadow and Sonic 06, there's still plenty of fun to be had.

Well this was insightful I guess I still have all of my old issues from the 90s ya know I wish it never came to this as a child I enjoyed the Sonic multiverse in the comic's I even liked that green Sonic too he was like the reverse flash wish he had a mini series comic
Actually Penders, didn’t create Scourge.
After having watched all 3 parts and digesting what I’ve viewed, I’ve come to the conclusion that this man is conceited. Now I respect that he worked to get his stuff copyrighted as he deserves compensation for his work and I will always be thankful for the earlier comics for keeping me interested as a kid. Sadly he comes off as a bitter man. He’ll never work with Sonic again and he’ll never be as big as SEGA has gotten. He continuously digs himself deeper with his Twitter and lack of progress with any of his projects. His movie is from 2010 and he waited for technology? It’s not even a high budget film. Also his comic is atrocious looking. Maybe the story might be there, but the substance is terrible.

Ill throw this in....was he paid fairly for his work? He never said he felt he was not paid fairly. The assumption was that this type of work is ALWAYS work for hire and it seems he got his fair pay...but he lucked out that Archie Comics was an idiot and was able to swipe the copyrights for himself. That's a dick move there...
@@dtester exactly my thoughts too; he found a loophole and took advantage of it. He is greedy and annoying. Surely, I do dislike some things Ian has done, but tbh I prefer his content over Penders ANY DAY; ships and game content? Fine by me as long as it isn't abt Knuckle's abusive and rapey dad. It makes myself bitter that this dude has single-handedly ruined Knuckles, and the character still can't recover even with different writers. I also dearly miss the fact that we can't have Scourge in anything new either, I liked his character--this dude surely found ways to snag characters even if he didn't ENTIRELY create them. And nobody wants his self-inserts and underage sex fests, nor his cruddy stories (i.e. the Echidna stuff) that only a non-skeptical child could love. Just go read the recent comics, it's better than having a ruined taste in your mouth when you go over Archie's comics after learning all this.

Why did he not talk about fucking over Ben Hurst? Ken is responsible for no continuation of satam, and according to his Twitter he is blaming Ben for it... yet he never elaborates on how... ben in the other hand before his death said he had tried to get Kenin on his movie pitch and ken went behind his back and made what Ben wanted seem less than flattering to sega...and now no season 3, and no official continuation that people like myself have waited for. I was 6 or 7 years old when sat am was cancelled.... I'm almost 33. That's a lot of years not to get any really closure on a tv shows plot, and now ben is dead and we will never probably get an official explanation as to what would happen other than small details from ben in interviews before he died. That fucking sucks and I will probably never forgive ken for that.
That said though tbh I get why other people dislike him, and the criticism of the stories he told, but also listening to all 3 parts of these stories I have a better idea of why those stories ended up the way they are, and it isnt all ken...
Also Ken's twitter presence is easy to hate though and he seems like an arrogant asshat. Like he literally said in like 2014 that he was the saviour of sonic... there is many things wrong with that. 1. Their are different interpretations of sonic all over the world..for example Europe didnt have the same sonic comics we did, Japan did and still for the most part does different things with sonic as well in print, animation, movies, games.. sonic is still recognizable and successful to this day 3 years after ken was fired and is still probably one if the most recognized characters in the video game history, and ken penders had nothing to do with that. 2. His contributions related to just the comic is pretty spit, or just negative especially the more he did it.. cant be saving it if you're one of the main reasons one form of sonic media is panned.. that probably actually caused more damage to the brand than it did "saving" it. 3. He literally fucked hurst.... he denied a TON of fans what they wanted because he wanted what he wanted. None if these things saved sonic... yeah like his popularity up until this new movie was pretty shit in comparison to how it was and ken penders is probably PARTICULARLY responsible for that in america, but let's face it it's probably mostly the fact that 3d sonic games didn't work as well as sega hoped. Either way nothing he did saved sonic. He is not some sonic savior. As a kid though the earlier comics did bring me joy especially after satam was cancelled because it was the closest thing I could get to satam.... and i imagine whatever success archie had after the cancellation was because of the cancellation.. seriously dudes I've wanted answers for 20 some years and the only thing I got close to that was stories about 10000000 echidnas.
It's a good thing that Penders was never given a chance at making a sonic movie or let him write season 3 of SatAM, he would more likely bury the show and movie with his drivel and madness.
And I could see him throw a manchild rage when he doesnt get to direct or write Sonic Prime or Knuckles miniseries I can imagine he would try to sue just because of the miniseries

It was struck to high heavens, for everything from clips from the outbreak, to wording used (Mustn't mention the country beginning with C, the virus beginning with C, and especially not in conjunction with a 1986 meltdown at a nuclear powerplant also beginning with C).

I gotta say after watching the video I was sad for two reasons 1) it is incredibly depressing with all the people dying and 2) News that Sonic might not get a sequel because of the potential loss of profit without China.

Hi Penders if saga talked to about get there characters back from you what would you say ?, I’d say yes.
If Archie Sonic is so powerful, how come he got killed by a talentless asshole and his team of lawyers? Ken is the strongest character in existence confirmed.
The comic continued for three more years. What killed him was that Archie couldn't afford the license to SEGA anymore or something. But SEGA, nothing stupid, took the writers and cartoonists to work at IDW. And in the end, neither Archie nor Penders gained anything. Well, SEGA keeps saying who gets money from Sonic.

Ken should probably scale back his ambition a little to get these projects finished. If The Lara-Su Chronicles does well, then try to turn it into toys,movies,video games,etc.
The Laura Sue Chronicles will never happen. He been working on this comic before he won the case. Go on his Twitter all you going to see is nothing but anti-trump nonsense completely obsessed with the President almost as bad as people were obsessed with the former President Barack Obama. As for the Laura Sue Chronicle the only thing your going to see two pages of the comic and a bunch of old Concepts pictures that he did 5-8 years ago nothing current. Finally the only reason why he copyrighted his characters because Ian Flynn killed off Knuckles dad and he improved his characters that can Ken Pender never cared for other than Knuckles dad, Julie Sue, and Laura Sue that's it.
