For my outdoor garden containers, I dump all of the soil from the previous year together in a big tub, I break it all up and remove any old plants/roots, add some compost or worm castings, and if it feels heavy at that point, I add some perlite. Then I just use that “refreshed” mix to pot up this year‘s plants!
here we are again! you have no idea of how much I appreciate your whole vibe! thank you for being this amazing human being. I also have a raven zz and over a year ago i planted a old rizhome full of roots that I completely forgot about. yesterday i checked it and it's actually giving me three new growth points, i'm really amazed by it
I was laughing at Olive at 00:48 when she was making her little nest 😂 Also, her tooth gap suits her sooo well! It's so stinking cute 🥹 I'm glad that she was finally able to get her dental surgery and everything went well.
Always look forward to seeing you and sweet Olive! Glad her dental surgery went well. Her gap-tooth look is super adorable haha!🐶♥️😊 I finished reading Verity a few days ago because of your recommendation a while back. Oooh my gosh it was a crazy-good read, couldn't put it down! So freaky! 🤯😱😲
I always feel like by the middle of February, my reserves are depleted. Luckily, around this time I notice that the air starts to smell differently. There's a sweetness in the air that's very unlike winter. I like to think of myself as a little plant bulb. My favourite seasons are spring and autumn, too!
Hi Fern, I just had to stop the video and tell you about my recent purchase of an Aglaonema Red Valentine. It came with two pieces in the pot so of course I had to separate it. I watched a video on channel “only plants” where Sean goes to an Aglaonema nursery in Indonesia. I went “wow” all the way through the 45 mins of video. A must watch, in my opinion, because it had some great content on growing these plants.
Outdoor plants usually don't mind a more dense or compost heavy earth at all. The life of microorganisms in there actually help the soild formation process that is wanted in agriculture. In pots i usually just mix up the soil from pots a bit after frost in march and then replant whenever its the time for that crop
Try growing dwarf grey sugar snap peas indoors. I can't stop planting more and more - it helps speed up the long winter and the plants are so fast growing and interactive. I started growing them indoors for the kids, but have planted so many more since for me. You'll have a new plant, something to eat, and that Spring gardening feel until the outdoors are ready.
Wow fern that’s such a great way to look at going into the new year not feeling well/ I would of never looked at it like that! This is why I love watching you because even when something isn’t “great” (in quotes because ya no we have this mindset that great has to be nothing going wrong lol) then we must be doing something wrong, and that’s not true also! Thank you so much for Always showing up for us - ❤️ also spring - such I became a plant mom is also my fav now hahaha!!!! And I got a pallidiforum after seeing how chill yours were and I love it! I use my soldering iron in my house with all windows open and fan on and I have no issues- I also don’t want to be outside using mine ahahah
I dont usually comment but i wanted to say that I really enjoy your videos. Given me so much information and i hve tried out things because of watching these videos.
Your description of Severance Ling Ma reminds me a little of Carol & The End of the World miniseries which expored routines and meaningless things of some of what we part take in. It makes you think. Loved this repot session!
My raven zz is my favorite plant! I bought mine two years ago and I put it outside in the summer. So far it doesn't do anything until July/August heat hits and then it'll shoot up like 8 new stalks during the heat and then nothing again until next summer. Requires a ton of patience but for how easy it is to grow (I water maybe 3 times in the summer when it's in 90+ degree heat) it's so worth it!
Can't wait for spring and longer days to finally come around!! I got some baby plants over the winter (I try to not buy plants in winter but there was a sale of mystery plant boxes for black friday ... so yeah not my fault!) that are waiting for their moss poles, bigger pots and better soil. At the moment all my plants are grouped together in one corner with a growth light and I'm really itching to finally put them in their actual spot in my flat. I also planted some corcus, tulips and other bulbs in planers outside and they seem to be getting ready to bloom. So exciting!!
Love your hair right now! It is a great style for you and your free spirit! Watching you brings me a calmness I need before bedtime. Thank you for helping me wind down from the day!!!
Take out the plants that just last for a year like tomato plants since the new ones could get fungal issues if you leave the old stems in for too long. Also, if you have any straw you can cover your strawbs with them for the milder frosts and they should be fine. They'll grow through eventually and the berried can then lay on the straw for a bonus prevention of rot. That plus eventually adding compost to your pots on top should be everything done for february!
Love watching your videos, you are such a wholesome person and it gives me a lot of inspiration to work on myself and to better myself. These are one of my favorite videos to watch also! And I vote yes to live streams, I think that'd be so fun!! 🥰
Looking beautiful as always, loving your hair and color! So happy to see another chatty repot…and look forward to outdoor plant and garden content! That’s where my heart started with plants-I grow native perennials mostly and food-and it’s led me back into indoor obsession! 🪴🌿can’t wait to see what’s next! ❤
Same with the ring light, and I was stupid enough to invest in a "good one" aka an expensive one. I can't use it most of the time cause I'm trying to film my cabinets and the ring reflects in the glass 🥲
Idk if this will help but I use take out cups like that for just about all my plants and use a soldering iron to melt holes into them but I do it inside because it is too cold outside to do it right now. I open all the windows I can, turn on several fans, at least one pulling fresh air in and one pushing air out, and then wear a respirator mask. I got the 3M 60293 level respirator and it works great! Love your content, hope this helps!
So cute your strawberries are poking out new growth! Even if it dies back they should be good to go when true spring hits, so don’t mess with them. Potatoes, tomatoes and herbs (not sure about all types, but most) you will want to pull and start over. I’m so appreciating longer daylight as we start to get into February ☀️
It was fun getting to know you a little better. We have our favorite seasons in common and the worst month of the year, February, even though my son was born February 4th, he will be 19!! Thank you for taking the time to repot with all of us.
Just a helpful FYI: you are likely overwatering your ZZ. They should be watered once a month, a little more often in summer. They also need higher light than we are told they do. There is existing and then there is thriving and they thrive in higher light. Please do not keep your re-pot ZZ "more moist until roots establish": this applies to other plants, not ZZ. It will rot. ZZ thrive on neglect. Try a little neglect, lol! It works.
Love your repot videos so much. They all look so good in the pots. I can’t wait to see a repot video of your linearis. Mine will need a repot too soon and she’s so big I’m kinda scared lol! Anyway hope your week is amazing for you and Olive too ♥️
Aglomenias are so easy. Mine have been growing all winter so far. They just get fuller and fuller, and increase in height slowly. They sill tell you when they are thirsty if you need a reminder. They are supposed to be low light, but really like it bright if they had it their way. I also feel the same way about Feb. Ugh, just a cold month with little light, and Valentines Day is only great if you have a love interest. Like you I will be rehoming some plants in the Spring when I can put them out on the sidewalk for free. I am getting more discriminating about those I collect, but can't quit the habit. I just love to see them grow, unless they dont, then its hit the road jack.
Ugh, Fern! I live in Georgia, USA and we have HUGE 10-12 inch pots of Raven ZZ in our Home Depot’s and Lowe’s! I think of you whenever I see them. I wish I could send you one lol.
Happy Olive recovered from her dental ordeal. Love the plant repot chats! I didn’t care for Ninth House. I was bored with it and had so many books on my “to read” list that I just moved on....Good that you can stay with a book through boring parts and find the value at the end. I don’t have the patience....😐
I'm interested to see if that ZZ starts forming a storage root and sends up new shoots. You'd think that, since it can be propagated from an individual leaf, it could also come from a shoot cutting, but we'll see! Mine is about 3-4mos. old and has only sprouted one shoot.
Oh poor Olive! Glad she’s recovering ok. 😊 You’re inspiring me to get back to reading, which I slowly did get move towards at the end of 2023. February is really a rebuilding and recentering month for me. Also love seeing aglaonema!
Great video as always Fern! I don’t have a soldering iron but I heat a steel skewer or hard wire over my gas stove and melt holes in plastic pots or anything else plastic,it’s quick and easy, and might I add, cheap Lol 😂
My baby (min pin) has to get a dental next week. I'm so nervous. He also has a fatty growth on his shoulder they're going to remove. Keep us in your thoughts please.🙏 Olive is such a cutie. I love when she's included in your videos. The more the better. 🥰😘❤ This was such a relaxing video. Thanks for taking my mind off of things!
Strawberries can handle a lot of frost so they will survive. Maybe your dahlia as well, Check the tuber, if is is not mushy it will come back. As long as it is not frozen. Lots of plants die off above ground but come back from the roots
My first 5⭐️ of 2023 was The Last Mrs Parrish. I’m currently reading Taste Like Candy on my kindle, it’s a slasher that takes place at a carnival. I tried to read ninth house back in 2019 could get into it but I going to give it another try this year to read the second book that just released
Omgggg I need to get back into reading! I never got to finish Hidden Pictures even tho I still want to! I’m glad you enjoyed it tho 😊 I really liked where it was headed where I last left off. I’m so freaking ready for spring 😭🙌🏽
I always feel bad when you show your Raven ZZ struggle because they’ve been selling lush full ones at my local grocery store chain for $20 lol I wish I could teleport one to you 😂
I have a pretty decent sized agleonema collection and I love them! So underrated. I’m so excited for you! 🌱💗 p.s. ur my fav person. Edit: they can do lower light and bright light but need some time in the higher light at the beginning then slowly acclimate to a lower light area if you need the room. They don’t mind some underwatering. Hope that helps.
Any type of pot is fine, I wouldn’t do self watering pots though. They don’t like to sit in moist soil for long so I’d recommend good drainage. I’ll admit I have 11 of them 😅❤.
depending on the camera you have for filming your youtube videos, you might be able to use that for livestreams with the help of a capture card. streaming from your smartphone might also be possible and probably better quality than a webcam.
Ohhh thank you, this is really helpful. I will look into both of them. The video quality on my iPhone is really good so it would be nice to be able to use that too.
@@wildfern I'm a streamer on twitch and I learned all about how to stream from UA-cam tutorials. I'm sure there are tons of helpful videos for UA-cam streaming as well. Good luck.
So I am waiting for this plant I have to die so I can get a Hoya not a rare one but would like a Hoya but my space is so small I need to wait until a plant dies before I get a new one lol!
Thanks! Buy a new container that's special. I've enjoyed watching and just found this option today.
this made me smile for you Fern!
You're kidding!!! This is so generous, wow, thank you soooo much Alan! I truly appreciate it.
This is an option!?!
I agree! I do the same to re-energize the soil…especially if it becomes hydrophobic ♥️🌸
Same here! I just add new amendments each spring :)
This is so helpful! Thank you!!
A soldering iron works wonders for adding drainage holes to recycled plastic containers!
here we are again! you have no idea of how much I appreciate your whole vibe! thank you for being this amazing human being.
I also have a raven zz and over a year ago i planted a old rizhome full of roots that I completely forgot about. yesterday i checked it and it's actually giving me three new growth points, i'm really amazed by it
Awww thank you so much for your kind comment! And that is amazing about your ZZ!
Your plant collection is literally my dream
Awe thank you!! I’m super grateful to be growing them all 🌿🥰
I was laughing at Olive at 00:48 when she was making her little nest 😂
Also, her tooth gap suits her sooo well! It's so stinking cute 🥹 I'm glad that she was finally able to get her dental surgery and everything went well.
Hahaha she's the sweetest angel 🥺🥺🥺
That was my favourite bit too 😭🤣
I like the way Fern says Against and Being, maybe I'm weird or maybe it's because I live in the US.
Olive is just soooo cute making her bed in the background!!!! 😍
So freaky! 🤯😱😲
Aww thank you so much! And I know right, Verity is sooo good!
Your bakeri has grown so much since this video! It’s insane! 😍🌿
Olive bedding down in the background is a mood

Your hair is so cute! Love how you post this right when im looking for something longer than 10 mins to watch ❤
Thank you so much! Glad I posted it at the perfect time haha :)
There is something so satisfying about repotting plants!!! Olive was so adorable making her little nest in behind you 💚💚💚
A nesting queen 🪹
We're about to own 2023. It's our year, I got no planty fear! Good luck :)
Hi! Greets from Finland! The energy around you is so calm, comforting and inspirational😊 and Olive is super cute ❤️
Miss Olive in the background is so sweet. This felt like a catch-up with a friend, thank you for the video!

Been watching your videos in the evening to settle in and get cozy. Your vlogs go so well with a chai and a fuzzy blanket
I cannot wait for Spring! It has been so cold this week in Illinois but I keep seeing good plant finds at our big box stores!
Oh that is awesome, I've been meaning to get out and check the shops here too!
Where are you in IL? I'm also here....hi neighbor!

Brilliant video 😍 I use a nail that I heat up over the gas cooktop to help create holes in plastic containers 🤗
Your description of Severance Ling Ma reminds me a little of Carol & The End of the World miniseries which expored routines and meaningless things of some of what we part take in. It makes you think. Loved this repot session!
A wishlist is never ending because there is forever something wonderful to add to the list
Exactly!
Wow you really got those roots super clean.

I really enjoyed hanging out with you 🪴💚🫶🏼 your so well spoken, so sweet and interesting❣️💯
Yes you can reuse the potting soil in your container gardens but use some osmocote fertilizer in each pot. You need a net over your strawberries.
Yes another chatty repot!!
I missed doing them!!
Love your hair right now! It is a great style for you and your free spirit! Watching you brings me a calmness I need before bedtime. Thank you for helping me wind down from the day!!!
I appreciate every minute that you spend to do video for us! Thanks fern you made my day🥰🪴💚🌿🌱
Thank you so much Jenny 🥺💖
Loved Ninth House. Haven’t started the sequel yet, but I love anything by Leigh Bardugo.
Loved Ninth House. Very weird and different. Just starting the second one Hell Bent. I hope you enjoy it.
I hope so too! Excited to make some progress on it.

Loving the stage that your hair is currently in, it’s super cute! Also would love to attend your live streams if you decide to figure that out 🥹❤️
Another relaxing repotting👍🐕💗

strawberries are cold hardy perennials so definitely let them be and they will likely grow completely back in
I gotta say, your hair is so freaking cute with the bangs and the pink!
Thank you 🥺
So relaxing to watch you Fern… thank you ❤
The heterophylla is a great plant. I had one shipped from Canopy Plants, New Orleans. They're hardy and fast growing! It shipped really well.
Ooo that's great to hear! I need to find one 😍
Great video, Fern. Always enjoy hanging out with you.
All you videos lately are 10/10!!
You are the best - thank you!! 💚
Same with the ring light, and I was stupid enough to invest in a "good one" aka an expensive one. I can't use it most of the time cause I'm trying to film my cabinets and the ring reflects in the glass 🥲
Ugh sooo annoying 😭 I've totally had that happen too lol, the glass reflection.

You inspired me with your cute ZZ Raven - I´m going to get a cutting too 🙂
That cup looks s the bomb!

lmaooo like what 😂
Love your repot videos so much. They all look so good in the pots. I can’t wait to see a repot video of your linearis. Mine will need a repot too soon and she’s so big I’m kinda scared lol! Anyway hope your week is amazing for you and Olive too ♥️

If you want a good fantasy/thriller combo I highly recommend the Sookie Stackhouse series ❤️
Oooo thank you!!
I would love a livestream! I would totally tune in.
Love the better lighting and sound!❤
Thank you!
I'm interested to see if that ZZ starts forming a storage root and sends up new shoots. You'd think that, since it can be propagated from an individual leaf, it could also come from a shoot cutting, but we'll see! Mine is about 3-4mos. old and has only sprouted one shoot.
Olive in the background 😍😍
Hey, just a suggestion, instead of the soldering iron, the tip of a hot glue gun makes perfect sized holes in containers! Lot less intimidating too!
Soooo smart! Thank you
Oh poor Olive! Glad she’s recovering ok. 😊
You’re inspiring me to get back to reading, which I slowly did get move towards at the end of 2023. February is really a rebuilding and recentering month for me.
Also love seeing aglaonema!
Your lighting looks good in this video and your hair is so cute
Thank you so much x
I’m reading Hidden Pictures right now. Good so far.
February was the worst until I got wise enough to move to Tucson. It is glorious here.
That would definitely solve it :) ☀️
Great video as always Fern! I don’t have a soldering iron but I heat a steel skewer or hard wire over my gas stove and melt holes in plastic pots or anything else plastic,it’s quick and easy, and might I add, cheap Lol 😂

Ohh I didn't think of that, I would be so happy if my Dahlia came back!
I find Feb to be VERY difficult even though my first son is born this month.. I am going to the Southern Ontario orchid society show & sale 👏👏👏👏💚🌿
Orchid show sounds so fun!!
Alocasia dragons breath I got it from planterina last year and i love it.

Oh I loved The Last Mrs Parrish! I'm not really into Ninth House either, but I'm going to push through a little bit longer lol.
Omgggg I need to get back into reading! I never got to finish Hidden Pictures even tho I still want to! I’m glad you enjoyed it tho 😊 I really liked where it was headed where I last left off. I’m so freaking ready for spring 😭🙌🏽
Single leaves from ZZs will grow itty bitty rhizomes. It’s so wild!
yes to livestreams!
I've grown ZZ plants from leaf cuttings in straight soil
I always feel bad when you show your Raven ZZ struggle because they’ve been selling lush full ones at my local grocery store chain for $20 lol I wish I could teleport one to you 😂
I would totally watch it if you did a live feed (or whatever it’s called 😂) Nice work on the plant chores girl 🫶✨
Your hair is looking soooo cuuuute!! 🦋💕🌿
Thank you so much 😀
omg those anthurium! 🤩 so beautiful. i definitely want to add those ones to my collection. 🥰🌿 sending you and your plants good viiiiibes. 💫

Oo I'm so excited!!! I love your videos Fern, such good vibes :) love La Dispute!!
Ahh thank you Emy! La Dispute is the best 🫶💖
Love the mug 😂
Isn't it amazing hahah!!
Certain Tea varieties will have higher levels of L-theanine in it, which is great for calming the mind! Green tea I think has the most.
Yes! This is part of the reason I wanted to switch to tea. I need all that good stuff haha. Luckily, I love green tea too.
I need to do some reporting too. My Anthirium and Hoya Pubicalyx are busting out of their pots
Idk why but a soldering tool has always made me nervous. I use my drill with smaller drill bits and it works great!!!
Fern! I just got a new puppy and I’m wondering if you have any tips for keeping Olive safe in a house with lots of plants! Thanks!❤❤
Hey! She has never paid any attention to them, so I don't have to do anything special. Sorry that I don't have any wisdom to share - good luck 🫶
My little zz raven has two leaves & it's just a little baby 😅 hope he survives
Love that shirt😃..
Excited for a new video! Also can’t wait for a Vlog! Love it sooo much
Thank you so much 😊
Hi Fern! Where is your floor lamp from in the background? I’ve been looking for one that doesn’t take up much space like that! Thank you Fern 💛
It's just from Amazon :)
So down for a livestream ❤
