@@sandygreen2707its called the VMU, its pretty much a memory card which also could be used to display basic information about the game or even play mini games in some instances (it had its own dpad and 2 buttons).
My dad got this launch day and it mesmerised me like no other game. He had a killer sound system and the ost rang through the house. Years later when I turned 18 I decided to play through the game as a way to better understand my father and his tastes. To this day I feel a connection to Ryo Hazuki more than any other character in fiction
I love stories like these I have a very emotional connection to games like Legend of Dragoon for ps1 and Donald in Maui Mallard ( Cold Shadow) fpr Snes
Took me a while longer because I was playing Nba2k and NFL2k. But I also got it on that same Christmas morning.. I wish my dreamcast still worked to play this game again
I hated this game with a passion. I wanted so bad to fall in love with it but it was too prototype for open world exploration . No indicators for objectives, a story we know at this point is trash and not fun to interact with.
@@apeking7099 I'm in Texas lol. So I found a version that has the English speech patched in. The game itself is the European release but with the English speech patched. I use my Dreamcast that has an optical drive emulator and load up the CDI files on there and play Shenmue 2 in English that way.
@@apeking7099 it runs decently enough. Frame drops here and there but if you enjoy the franchise then you may be able to look past that. For the most part it's a gorgeous game for the time and it's a fun experience. Stuff starts to pick up in Shenmue 2.
Yep, Shenmue 1 and Sonic Adventure were my two favorite Dreamcast games, I still remember my brother teaching me how to play 4-5 years old around 2000. It was an experience like no other, I wish I could relive those days for the first time again. The open world, NPC's doing daily tasks and being able to inspect individual items off a shelf was so impressive.
This and the PS1 is where it all started for me, currently playing through Shenmue 2 on the Xbox, you can't beat the interactive cutscenes, one moment you're listening to a conversation chilling and the next you've gotta press a random button or you're fucked! I love it!
This video brings me fond memory 😢 I played Shenmue & Shenmue II so much on Dreamcast that I told myself if Shenmue III ever comes out I'm going to retire from playing them. I have to say that disc 4 of Shenmue II was the best gaming moment in video games history.
I haven't played it yet but soon The important thing is that you play the European version and the reason that the color of the Dreamcast logo is blue is that there is a European company whose logo is similar to the original Dreamcast logo which is orange and to avoid copyright, change the color of the logo
I almost forgot how many disks the dream cast version had of shenmue 1. I just remembered it was like 3 disks and 1 bonus disk with extra features. Right now I have Shenmue 1,2 and 3 on my steam account.
45y Shenmue is my best video game experience Best memories Play this game in December. Ryo in China , walking the night . And then , a very cool song start . Peacefull song And then , it stat snowing into the game . Magical moment .
I still remember playing Shenmue on DC and had great times solving things to get to Lan Di and later fighting the 70 guys in back of the warehouse after beating the game “I’ll kill you” Big Tall Dude
I see so many people go crazy for example about RDR2 npc`s having job routines.... Shenmue did it in 1999 and better!! Shenmue was "only" the most advanced game for its time in everything, of all time. No game after that gave me the "wtf! how this is possible in a game??" feeling like this one!! Absolutly the best and most immersive game i`ve ever played in my 32 years of gamer!!
I've just had early memories that I forgot about flood back to my memory. I couldn't read yet when this came out lol so I never knew what it was called
I need to actually finish part 3. I wish the pacing was the same as the first two. Shenmue 1 is my favorite game of all time I rented it on a whim.. I had no idea what I was about to get into. It's perfect
Dreamcast is console of the late 90's and early 2000's. So smooth, futuristic looking, and fun games. Yet I still sold it for a PS2 when that system was released in 2000 😅
A console ahead of it's time
What was the purpose of the piece that u put in the controller? Genuinely asking
@@sandygreen2707its called the VMU, its pretty much a memory card which also could be used to display basic information about the game or even play mini games in some instances (it had its own dpad and 2 buttons).
And a game way ahead of its time. #LetsGetShenmue4
for like three months
Rwjdjduejdueb
It was one of the greatest gaming experiences of my life. The graphics, the big open world, all the lovely little details and so on...
Same. And console menu music, and in-game music... they keep taking me to some nostalgic abyss.
@@ItsMeBarnabylike in gta 3, which was released a year later, lol
Shenmue had far more detail than gta 3@@adrashmadra7149
I love the dreamcast but shenmue was boring its pretty much just talking to NPCs for hours
@@adrashmadra7149actually, GTA 3 came out almost 2 years later.

You're a good son.
Christmas 2000. I acquired a Dreamcast and Shenmue. I cried tears of happiness. 23 years later and still love it with all my heart.
Took me a while longer because I was playing Nba2k and NFL2k. But I also got it on that same Christmas morning.. I wish my dreamcast still worked to play this game again
Shenmue is one of the best games ever made.
Really
I hated this game with a passion. I wanted so bad to fall in love with it but it was too prototype for open world exploration . No indicators for objectives, a story we know at this point is trash and not fun to interact with.
It really is. But sadly, its sequels weren't.
@@TheEarthRealm While it wasn't great like the original, Shemue 2 was still very good imho. I definitely agree with you about part 3 though.
Have you actually played it?
I listen to playthroughs of this game as free therapy lol. It's such a great nostalgia trip.
I'm doing one.
The most underrated console and game of all time. Echoing what many others have said in the comments, way ahead of it's time. Great memories.
shenmue underrated LOLOLOLOLOL
@@sudacagamerWere you alive when Dreamcast first came out bro?
I weirdly like Shenmue but underrated is objectively false lmao
Shenmue was a game that helped me get through a lot in the past and Even turn back to it every now and again whenever I'm feeling at my lowest

Shenmue is an all time classic. If you don't have acces to a Dreamcast (or OG Xbox for Shenmue 2), I strongly recommend you pick up the HD remaster

Revolutionary game... Part 2 blew my mind.... Kowloon was so crazy.
