To Miss A- I started gymnastics when I was 13 and was put with a bunch of little kids and one girl who was two years younger than me. It was embarrassing, but I stuck with it because I thought it might still be something I liked. Today, I still love tumbling and gymnastics, and the few years I was in the class, I even became friends with some of the kids who were a lot younger than me. We had a special relationship and competed together. Overtime, I got a lot better and I found my passion. Even though I started much later than most people, I found what I love and can now tumble quite well. Don't give up and definitely don't ever compare yourself to others! You're doing great, and everything takes time.

So I applaud you and your ability to communicate that, because positive thoughts like these she can carry with her throughout her whole life.

I’m 16 and I still have a two parents who hug me before school in the morning and tell me they love me every night. My parents drive me to and from each and every activity, and support me every step of the way. Thank you for being that person for kids who don’t have it. I am 17 years old and I have had many CYS (or CPS) visits. I live with my grandma and my mom because my mom is a heavy drug user. There have been countless times where I have been stranded in the car with her because she was too high to drive. My principal has had to drive me home from school many times. There have been countless ER visits. Every time something like this would happen I would help cover it up. We would blame it on the new medications she was on or some medical condition etc... I spent my whole life doing anything and everything to stay out of the system because my situation couldn’t be worse than foster care. The horror stories of abuse and neglect kept me complacent in my own abuse and neglect. Seeing how there are amazing (AMAZING) families out there like yours makes me regret all of that so much. I would do anything to go back in time and tell the case workers that NO I do not feel safe. I wish your family all the best. You are a truly incredible family. Thank you for all you are doing

Hey! Former foster sister, current gymnast, and former cheerleader, if Miss A is interested in more tumbling/cheerleading route a really good option is to go to any local cheer gyms because a lot of them may offer intro cheer classes for high school cheerleaders therefore it may be girls more around her age and still be around her skill level to make her feel a little more comfortable! I started cheer classes when I was around 13 and there were plenty of girls who had done no tumbling yet! Just an idea! I love what yall are doing and hope for the best for yall and Miss A

When I was in high school I had befriended some young ladies who were living in a foster home. I invited them to come volunteer down at my local humane society with me. I think that would depend on what age they’d allow that at your local shelter. But it was definitely fun and therapeutic for them. They enjoyed getting out of the house but also not necessarily having to be around a bunch of people all the time. We would feed/water, bath and walk the dogs. Same goes for the cats, we’d make sure the litter boxes were fresh, fresh food and water and would play with them. Just an idea though. :)

Myspacemuncher some shelters will allow children that are not old enough to physically interact with animals come in and read to the dogs. It’s a stress free way to improve a child’s reading skills and is very therapeutic for animals. This would be great for a lot of foster children who might not have had a consistent or strong education and might be embarrassed by his or her lack of reading skills.

I'm so impressed by how much you care about Ms. A! When I was 8, I was in foster care. I wasn't allowed to see anyone I knew previously (outside mandatory parent visitations) nor was I encouraged to make new friends. My fosters would never let my new friends from my new school come over to play. (One time one randomly stopped by to ask if I could play, and they told her no. They acted kind of confused and offended afterwards that someone stopped by to see me.) The only people I had to play with were their other two fosters (that they adopted) who were like 2 and 4 yrs old.

Also, I truly appreciate your outlook on this experience. Everything from giving a child the opportunity to be a child, to rooting for the parents so reunification is possible. I’ve seen so many kids going through this process who are just beaten down and broken because every sense of normalcy is taken from them. They have to grow up so quickly, so I love that you give your foster kiddos a chance to thrive and be what they are...children. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for all that you do.

My sisters and I were with kinship foster parents for years (eventually they gained full guardianship of course) and we all did cheerleading (and hated it) before moving on to band (which we also all three hated lol). It was very cool though to be able to do extra-curriculars that we had previously been unable to do due to moving around a lot and lack of money. Eventually, I and my youngest sister went into the arts, and our middle sister went into outdoor exploring activities. My aunt and uncle got me my very first guitar and I'm still playing 9 years later, so I think it's so, so helpful and important for foster parents to give the kids new opportunities and it's very cool that you are doing that for Miss A.

I was a foster mom for many years and hope to do it again someday. We took one of our kiddos to Disney with us. It wouldn't have been fair to have left her in respite while we were gone and it truly was so magical for her and for us!

It is so beautiful to see how proud you are of her! I love how you are fostering the idea to keep on living life and don't hold back just because it may change. I have to remind myself of it too - live life and it will take care of itself on its own even if it doesn't feel like it.

I got to scrapbook 😊 Although the state reimbursed the county. And it was only a one time "recreation" type program thing? We all got to pick one thing we'd like to do as a hobby. My foster sister picked electric guitar. Scrapbooking and paper crafting in general are things that I have carried into my adult life. Hobbies are so therapeutic and I'm happy that Miss A gets to do gymnastics 💚

I just am blown away at how you go above and beyond to ensure the needs of your foster kids. Not just their basic needs but you guys are nurturing the whole child which, I dont think you realize, is quite rare in the system. My little cousins went into he system for some time (there mom had an emotional break down and then the case worker became very vindictive and actually removed the children from family care (their grandmothers home in Avery traumatic way...oulling them from under tables at 9 pm etc - it was very traumatic ) ) and while the girls (newborn and 3 at the time) got amazing homes (tho separated) the boys ( 4.5 and 7) went into a group home where they said they were abused and came out of it (the family fought to get them back) with some serious behavioral issues (one of them has now been diagnosed with a mental health disorder, had killed 2 animals, has had to go Ito behavioral health centers, etc. when they came back to the family home the older one was doing some very concerning things, displaying very odd behaviors that previously were not seen in him). The state said that boys over the age of 4 have a hard time finding a foster family :( Girls are better off but still the older they are the harder it is. And even if they find a home, there are many who do it for the $$ abusing what the system is for and providing the kids with he absolute bare minimums.
If for some reason I wasn't able to parent my own children, I would hope and pray they would have someone just like you to step in to care for them. I mean family members dont do the things you guys do for a lot of kids.
I often wonder if you guys realize how special you are...probably not because I think it comes so naturally to you. Your just living up to the standards that are totally normal to you and your husband. If you only knew these standards are quite rare in the system.
