This is why auditors SHOULD know where their right to film ends. If you are stood in a police car park or lobby, all you get is a debate about police property. If you're on a public right of way, they can't say you're trespassing. Auditing is supposed to be about public photography and any confrontation based on that.

As a ex civil enforcement officer, police/MOD/fire etc can only park in restricted zones providing they are on operational duties. Parking outside a police station for no Reason in a bus stop is not legal, and I would have issued a PCN notice to the vehicle.🇬🇧

Subordinates always look to their leaders and managers for instruction, direction and, most importantly, examples of good practice. You could see that in this engagement but they only had their suspicions and prejudices confirmed by the Inspector (whoever he was). He probably thought he’d engaged with you professionally but his ignorance of his own performance was obvious to me and the others there. He needs to reflect on this and improve his approach.
When the police begin to engage with the public in a positive manner then maybe the public view of the police will change for the better.. They clearly were not happily engaging with you and the entire interaction came across condescending with minimalist engagement .. Not a happy view of modern policing
