I have been in a 10 speed manual now for 2 weeks. Yesterday I drove solo (no more trainer!) for my first time. Everything you are doing in this video is exactly what I have been doing, but I'm not nearly as good as you! The hardest part for me was if I lost a gear as I was downshifting, I'd lost my train of thought and not know what gear to try to find. I'd end up coasting to a stop. Once I got good enough to know what gear to try for, it all started to click, now instead of being nervous, I am really starting to enjoy driving a manual, and I am so glad I made sure my CDL school trained on manuals. Excellent video, excellent explanation. Thank you.

Thanks a lot DD. Video was awesome and cleared up a lot of confusion I had. It's a lot more relaxing watching the camera angles from home instead of my old man yelling "YOU'RE GONNA MISS THE GEAR!!" and "QUIT REVING SO HIGH!!" Lol Can't wait to jump in the truck and try again.

    • @DrtyDiesel
      @DrtyDiesel  3 роки тому +3

I completely understand that, yeah hopefully it'll help. Plus, if you don't want to rev too high, put the stick against the gear to where it rubs a little. Then slowly rev up the engine, when it gets to the right rpm, it will sink in. I heard a guy from Eaton Fuller call it "tickling the transmission into gear" lol.

I learn't to drive standard in Toyota Landcruiser's underground in mines. Cause that's what most mines use, they come from over seas and are built heavy duty with SARS brakes and have 10 leaf springs on them. I was diamond drilling, so I was a contractor and our Toyota had the 5 gears and it wasn't supposed to, for safety reasons all Toyotas were supposed to be locked out at gear 3 and couldn't really go faster than 40 - 45 km.

I've been out a truck for a year and haven't driven a manual in almost 3 years. Just found a new gig and it's all manuals 10 and 18 speed. Took the 10 out today to get used to a truck again and I feel like nearly a complete newb starting over. I can double clutch very good but floating I seem to grind more. I only practiced bobtail floating in lower range. I think I'm letting my rpms drop too fast. I can float up to 4 no problem. 5 and 6 sometimes I grind. Basically you have to be between 1000-1500 for all shifts up and down? Downshift I let the rpms drop to like 850-900 burp the throttle to like 1300 then down into gear.

Excellent video I am retired on disability due to illness I had close to 17 years I went threw a truck school they instructed us in the double clutch method I picked up throttle shifting on my own on my first job about a month in I learned a lot that first year like hybrid shifting just clutching to get into nuetral and letting fall into the next gear I also discovered from a well seasoned driver that when your Moving slow in heavy traffic or coming up on a traffic light you do not need to drop into low range on a 10spd there is a hidden bonus gear when your in high range keep that valve on the high side and pull that stick way over you need to search a little bit to find it for the first time or two but when you find it you will appreciate it believe me try it out first in the back trailer yard or back street 😎😎😎😎

I can’t guess when I started driving newer trucks 10 spd gear boxes kind of went away in favor of 9 Spd s & 13 Spds because when you look at the shift pattern you have a low hole gear that says LO it is better ratio for pulling heavy loads out of steep inclines docks then the 1st gear on a ten spd and when lurching along in slow rush hour traffic you can go for the LO hole and you don’t need to push your range selector down to go into LO range just stay on the high side and when traffic picks back up just start shifting you high range gears

Nice video. I worked for a restaurant supply company a few years ago and they had mostly manual box trucks. I trained with a Class A guy and he showed me how to float the gears and I thought it was the coolest thing ever! I learned how to do it and drove the truck for over a year that way til I left. I just got my Class A CDL so my next step will be learning the 10 speed and then going for additional endorsements! I’m 34 now and hope to be an owner/operator sometime between 40-45! I want to be VERY comfortable financially by 50 and trucking will be my way there! Driving a tractor/trailer is SO engaging! Almost addictive driving something that BIG!

Bro' just came across your videos & I've picked up some valuable tips on floating
    1st I'm an experienced driver CDL B since 03'
Long story short coming out of Florida moved up to Ohio to work in the Oil Field GREAT MONEY GREAT OPPORTUNITY
I'm in a 7 Axel running the Asphalt Rollercoaster of Ohio, Pennsylvania, & W. Virginia
I can Float not as good as back when I've been in push button trucks for the past several years mostly now my situation is I've got a Trainer in the the truck that can't teach . And his requirement is that I Float in FULL JACK BRAKE ALL THE TIME ! End of store ! I've got about another week to get THIS or I'm DONE !!!
And it seem like I'm getting worse & WORSE
Plus he's got Baby the FUK out of his truck

Thanks for getting back with me...I'm get better I find the #2 Setting on the Jake to work for best for me
AND about an hour out of the yard tonight on the PA OH border coming down hill I lost all my AIR now I've had a compressor drop air to the point where the low air warning alarm came on but it was on the Interstate...I was coming down hill I had already been in the low end doing 25-30 in curves & before the alarm went on I shifted 4-3 & nothing so I reved the rpms & just the clutch to go though the lower gears...I had breaks but I actually caught 1st as the alarm came on
      I MEAN I SLAMMED IT INTO 1st !!!
So now I'm just rolling down Hill and both the driveway to lease Road going the Frac pad not able to get this thing to catch a gear besides first I'm still trying to Rev the moto... trying to get you know some type of gear besides first and that thing's not loaded at all just basically like pottering
So pop the button for the air breaks get out put the wheel chocks out incase whatever is in the tanks just bleeds you know I'm still amazed that the spring break didn't pop?!? Open the hood all the belts are there so I just watch & wait the serpentine belt was just sliding over the pulley on the front of the compressor at first I thought it was optical illusion side like focus on the felt I'm not real smooth because I hadn't spent a lot of time looking at 1 every damn man it was just slipping you know occasionally would grab the wheel and it would turn it so I go back in the cab I rev the engine up to about 1500 RPMs and I must have sat that with that thing reved up between 1200 and 1500 RPMs !!! For a 1/2 hr to get the air up to 60 psi just so the alarm would go off
So then I of course have 0 Cell Signal to call the shop or mechanic so I walk down the road talk to mechanic tell him exactly what's going on...by the time I get back to the truck 90 psi I watch it climb up to about a hundred and next 10-15 minutes get out of the truck like down the street to where I get cell signal calling say I have air but 1 time! About that time overnight guy at our shop truck with the lights on it cuz they don't have any parts ! If your comfortable...you willing to drive the truck back at a crawl?
With him in the lead I about 36 Miles using the clutch & trans only I only put my foot in the breaks 4 times !
      HAIREST EXPERIENCE in recent memories

@@alfredoviera5364 I understand. Try floating when upshifting, double clutch down. Once you get that down, then you can try floating down. Just be safe out there.

I’m a new CDL driver trained on double clutch per DOT. I interviewed with an aggregates company yesterday that wanted me to float gears. I had issues floating gears while downshifting. The key component I see in this and other videos is getting that fuel tap perfect or you won’t make your gear. Then the panic sets in for us newbies and we flub it all up. Can be nerve racking. Hopefully I’ll find a company that will allow me to learn and practice in the same truck. Consistency will help. Anyway, this video really shows how quick and easy that fuel tap should be. Thanks.
Good news is that company driver I did a road test with said they usually look for 1 to 2 years experience. He said as a new driver I almost got hired. With a few months shifting experience I can go back and reapply.
