Republic Waste Facility on Fire in Chicago (on 11-7-2019) 4K

  • I was driving along and I heard a light explosion right around the corner from where I was in Chicago on 11-7-2019, I looked up in the sky and saw a huge plume of black smoke, I thought it was the coffee roaster nearby but the smoke just got worse within seconds.
I drove down the block to the location of the fire which turned out to be Republic waste Management Facility on Wood and Carroll Street, I first took a looked around made sure nobody needed any help, who wants to be near a pile of garbage anyway, and then took a video of the entire fire.
It seems like the fire was started either from a lithium battery or from spontaneous combustion in the garbage, or who knows what else, i'm sure there is methane gas coming off of the garbage which could be ignited I'm sure.
Either way, the Chicago Fire department got that fire completely under control in like 10 minutes flat.

Just looks like a fire we had in Duisburg this same year! The location: a recycling facility! These places are a fireman's nightmare: high fireload, heaps of combustible material, and days to put out the fire & to search for fire pockets.

I like watching and appreciate how firefighters work. The most disturbing thing they do...their masks aren’t a priority. You can’t fight a fire if you’re passed out from inhaling whatever’s burning.

joker432 they don’t really have a good ISO rating I would think. My city that runs 3 people out of station 1 gets an ISO class 2 rating. And you have full engine and ladder crews here that have no sense of how to use PPE. They get full turnout on any fire alarm or fire. Maybe they should learn from my city.

Not really, with that amount of heat being created the convection current is so strong that it pulls everything upward, that's why it's so clear where I was filming from, the bigger the fire the more oxygen gets pulled in from the bottom. I did an episode early this year about house fires and I learned very quickly that the fire is literally breathing, pulling air in from the bottom mixing that oxygen with the fuel creating the reaction with intense heat as a by-product which goes up which completes the cycle.

I can tell the fine folks of Chicago aren’t use to fires. Shootings are natural there I suppose. Judging by the firefighters and this clown turning this into something bigger then it was.
