The Queen is such a kind, warm hostess - and such a lovely sense of humour - so natural. When Prince Michael talks to Lech in Russian, she waves her hand, laughs and says, 'Well that's just showing off!' I've always thought what a wonderful Tsar of Russia, Michael would make. Infinitely more attractive than Maria Vladimirovna, and he speaks the language like a native.
I love Her Majesty introducing her family without royal titles. I knew a gentleman who worked for the royal family and he said in truth the family is a family like any family; royalty is their job but not how they think. i like that.
I’ve been watching UA-cam videos of the Queen and her family for the past week because of her Jubilee ..etc. I usually don’t care for Royalty but I think she’s awesome and funny.
What a wonderful video! Her Majesty is so charming as always and Lech Walesa is doing pretty well, though sometimes he seems to be a bit lost. Thank you so much for posting it.
This really warms my heart! I have read so much about The Royal Family and I never expected to see such a fun side of Queen Elizabeth! Now I have a whole different and such a positive view of the beautiful lady.
@LemonCake07 It's called "A Year in the Life of Queen Elizabeth II" To commemorate her 40 years on the throne they followed her for a year and during the doc there are many insightful comments from the Queen. Also on UA-cam - the Queen taking a walk with her grandchildren; reflecting on her life as Monarch, her sitting for a portrait, winning a bet at the races. I have the doc on tape.
Even though I don't consider myself a monarchist/royalist I still find these insights into royal life,(private & public),fascinating. It is a rich history after all and impossible to air-brush out of our lives. The Queen is clearly a very popular woman & irrespective of where monarchy goes after her death,(& it clearly will never be the same),she has performed her duties impeccably.I suspect she will forever be our most popular monarch.
Princess Michael isn't the Duchess of Kent, rather it is Katherine, wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent - his younger brother is Prince Michael of Kent (the one speaking Russian in the video). The only female "Kent", by birth, is Princess Alexandra.
Yes, we actually had a treaty that said we would come to the aid of Poland if it were invaded. As you say,the US was not concerned with Hitler's invasions. If you go to Poland (even today) and they know you are British you will get a really great reception.
What a marvellous viewing, but how stressful and maybe boring, it may be for them all. The Queen is wearing Queen Mary's "Girls of Great Britain and Ireland" tiara, and the QM, the Boucheron. I can't make out the other tiaras though. Wonderful, thankyou.
That I did indeed. There are two additional Dukes that are currently female. The Duke of Normandy and the Duke of Lancaster - both titles held by the queen.
technically there are no royal duchesses. All female members of the royal family that are duchesses are by marriage (Camilla, Duchess of Kent, Duchess of Gloucester..). The blood princesses (born into the family by a male line prince) are princesses not duchesses. Anne is an example. She is a "blood princess" but not a duchess.
That is the Waterloo Chamber, almost totally destroyed in the Windsor fire and beautifully restored. The chamber was diplomatically renamed during the visit of the French president.
2:38 Can somebody please tell me the name of the position (job title) of the gentleman preceding the Queen (the gentleman carrying the white rod)? Thank you.
You've hit the nail on the head. The UK went to war because of Hitler's invasion of Poland. In 1945 the US saw getting on with the Russians as far more important than the liberation of Poland. My own view is that the US saw the postwar world as being divided between the Soviet Union and themselves.
In the cold war era, all Soviet Sattelite countries (Poland was one of them) the citizens had to learn Russian as part of their schooling it was law. So Prince Michael spoke Russian knowing that Lech did as well.
While the Queen may be our tribal head and loved by 82% of her people (WOW! EVERY POLITICIAN WOULD LIKE THAT AMOUNT OF SUPPORT), I also like Princess Michael she always looks so elegant: Along with HRH The Duchess of Cornwall she is one of my favourites.
how wonderful these banquets were when they were done the old way....the Lord Steward (or Chamberlain) walking backwards ,and all the footmen in there glittering liveries.....nowadays,they wear very plain cloths
@zimnaya It would be nice for Russia to have a Tsar again but it is very unlikely and because of Tsar Nicholas II's distaste towards Maria Vldmirovnas grand parents it was made legally impossible for that side of the family and their children, grandchildren and so on to become in line. so if Russia ever restores monarchy, Michael definately has a higher chance than MV. although she is the closest living relative, she would make wonderful leader and has what it takes, sadly it wont work
There are four royal duchesses: The Queen is the Duchess of Edinburgh, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Michael, Duchess of Kent and Brigitta, Duchess of Gloucester. All other British duchesses are the wives of non-royal hereditary dukes.
The Duchess of Kent is very dignified and elegant even with her illness,a true Lady.Whereas you then have Marie-Christine,aka Princess Pushy who believes herself to be more royal than the royals.Enough said! Lol,& the queen mother,"Are we orf?" Wouldn't want to have to do the washing-up after all that!
I am given to understand that Britain tried very hard to save Poland from Hitler and from Stalin. But she had limited resources and the US cared little about Poland in fear of rising dominance of Communist Russia.
Well, I think you should tell a dear Polish friend of mine your opinion regarding speaking Russian. She is 31 and speaks fluent Russian as she and many others were forced to learn it at school. So it would seem odd if Lech does not know how to?

She's a very interesting woman, Im glad videos like this exist cause I hate it that people think she's cold.

@anaclet
The Queen was introducing Lech Walensa to those members he had not yet met.
What a wonderful video! Her Majesty is so charming as always and Lech Walesa is doing pretty well, though sometimes he seems to be a bit lost. Thank you so much for posting it.

@anaclet . Lech Walesa was introduced to HRH The Princess Margaret earlier in the day.
Why didn't the Queen introduce her sister, Pincess Margareth Rose, to the guest?!

People always confuse being poised, elegant, and regal with being cold. I've always admired her charm and witt.

Long May she Live
@LemonCake07
The video clip is from the B.B.C. 1991 doc about the royal family.
Bless you Ma'am you have served your country well.
Long may you rein
That is the Waterloo Chamber, almost totally destroyed in the Windsor fire and beautifully restored. The chamber was diplomatically renamed during the visit of the French president.
Horrible petty treatment of poor Princess Margaret by the queen in ignoring her during the introductions.
2:38 Can somebody please tell me the name of the position (job title) of the gentleman preceding the Queen (the gentleman carrying the white rod)? Thank you.
Wouldn't I love to be introduced to the Royal Family that way? :)
Our Val looks stunning..........

Very perfect,,, Royal Banquet...
@pedrcymro29 Oh thank you for the nice piece of information. But how do you know that?
That was in private.Winsor Castle is her favourite home!
At 2:31 ------ Now THAT is a dining room table!
Both had other engagements to attend on behalf of Her Majesty.
Why don't I ever get invited to one of those things?
I was shocked when I saw the Queen bypassing her sister. But I now know the reason.
In the cold war era, all Soviet Sattelite countries (Poland was one of them) the citizens had to learn Russian as part of their schooling it was law. So Prince Michael spoke Russian knowing that Lech did as well.
@XenaAmazon As has been said you're not allowed to turn your back to the Queen, but this really on stands at State occasions now.
How many duchesses are in England? And who are exactly these princesses in this video, please?
I would NOT want to do the washing-up after that banquet, lol.
how wonderful these banquets were when they were done the old way....the Lord Steward (or Chamberlain) walking backwards ,and all the footmen in there glittering liveries.....nowadays,they wear very plain cloths

@XenaAmazon I think because you aren't supposed to turn your back to The Monarch.
Can someone PLEASE tell me where this clip is from? Is it a documentary? What is its title? Thank you. :)
This is only done in very specific formal situations.
Did she introduce princess Margaret?
There are four royal duchesses: The Queen is the Duchess of Edinburgh, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, Princess Michael, Duchess of Kent and Brigitta, Duchess of Gloucester. All other British duchesses are the wives of non-royal hereditary dukes.
Mr this happened 20 years ago. Right after Poland finally won its independence.
They'd met earlier.
I too was shocked. But now I know the reason which is stated below by a knowledgeable person.
Apologies for replying to such an old comment, but that's what I've always thought about Prince Michael. That would certainly be grand.
God save the Queen!
@zimnaya Why the hell would he talk to Lech "in Russian"?
I am given to understand that Britain tried very hard to save Poland from Hitler and from Stalin. But she had limited resources and the US cared little about Poland in fear of rising dominance of Communist Russia.
ooh she didnt introduce them to princess margaret....DISS!
What year was this?
She is a great hostess but not introducing Princess Margaret is rather unforgivable, I hope she treated her better in private than she did in public..
oh look! it´s queen mom!!
0:34 - Did he just say 'Hows it?' to Princess Anne? :O bahahaha lmao
amusing sense of humor !
Well, I think you should tell a dear Polish friend of mine your opinion regarding speaking Russian.
She is 31 and speaks fluent Russian as she and many others were forced to learn it at school. So it would seem odd if Lech does not know how to?
She completely skipped Margaret!
I assure you that Lech Walesa does not speak Russian.
LOL Yeah. Not from Ikea either!
Try paying attention then!
you have to be very bad educated if you don't know why he doesn't know the english language...
Why are some people walking backwards?
