Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet) was BIG in the 80s and early 90s. He mostly played "Geek" roles, and he's probably best known for playing the dad in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids trilogy. We're all very excited about the announcement that he's coming back to film -cough- the Honey I Shrunk the Kids reboot... This movie was made at the height of the Transformers toy craze, they were the Tickle Me Elmo toy of that Christmas time. The ship turning into Mega-Maid made perfect sense for the era for that reason.
@@AlexSeverinski I doubt that very much. This is Mel Brooks we're talking about. Whatever he's doing, it's not watching Transformers cartoons, which are unabashed half-hour toy commercials anyway. I think they would make Mel depressed and angry.

Mel Brooks, if you haven't looked it up, was president Skroob, and Yogurt. Barf was John Candy. Aside from other Mel Brooks movies, you should check out John Candy movies. I would recommend The Great Outdoors for John Candy. Blazing Saddles for Mel Brooks, but be forewarned, Blazing Saddles is ... not politically correct by today's standards. I would also recommend To Be or not to Be for Mel Brooks...and Young Frankenstein. Anyway, great reaction for this one.
And Dark Helmet is Rick Morranis. They're not quite the classics of some of the other suggestions but you should check out "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" for more with him, and Ghostbusters to see him in a minor supporting role (though you should really watch Ghostbusters pretty much regardless).
Pre-watch: Girl, y'all need a cuppa Joe! never mind... lol Mel actually called George Lucas and told him his idea, George told him to go for it. The 4th wall is never safe around Mel Brooks. The guy in the helmet is Rick Moranis. His ability to make those sounds (and many, many others) is what got him the part. When you see Alien (1979), it will make more sense When you see the original Planet of the Apes (1968), it will make more sense. When you see Prince Valiant (1954), it will make more sense et cetera... Post-watch: Don't be in a hurry to see Mel Brooks movies. Can you imagine watching this without ever seeing Star Wars? You'd have had some laughs, but you'd have missed a LOT. This isn't the only parody. Young Frankenstein, High Anxiety, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Blazing Saddles... all are parodies of other movies and genres. There were big references even in this movie that made no sense to you because they were unknown to you. All of Mel's movies make fun of things most people at the time knew. And Mel's references can go back to the 1920s and further. NOBODY gets all of them. But the more you've seen, the funnier he gets. Definitely do see more Mel Brooks films!! Just wait a bit and ask around.
Don't know if that follows. This is a very particular parody of a very particular property. Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, etc. are much broader. I'm not a Western fan, but I got BS fine. Ditto YF; never seen the classic films (though I know the story), had no issue.
Love your reactions. The scene from Alien, with the xenomorph coming out of his stomach, and the end of Planet of the Apes (The original one) are the movie references at the end of the Spaceballs. It's an absolute classic. BTW, Bill Pullman played Lonestar, and also played the president in the original "Independence Day".
My Other Favourite Comedy Starring Bill Pullman Is Ruthless People. His Character In That Movie Is Dumber Than Donald J. (I Really, Really Want To Fuck My Daughter.) Trump, If Such A Thing Is Even Humanly Possible.
@@Sam_on_UA-cam That's fair. My only point is that because they are two different movies, and we are suggesting she watch the one that references the scene, we should probably be recommending the right one.
Not sure "Valium" is really a thing anymore. Still around, I'm sure, but not a big part of the culture. Like quaaludes. Could be "Prince Xanax", but then you don't get the "Valiant/Valium" thing, though I don't think Prince Valiant is a viable cultural reference any more, either.
Mel Brooks played the President as well as Yogurt, he is a living legend. If you liked this, Young Frankenstein should have you in stitches. It's just so purely funny, to the point that when they finished filming, they added more scenes because everyone was having so much fun. Blazing Saddles would be very interesting as well, just to see how it'd play out with someone unaware of what is coming
Lol. So, two film references you didn’t get. 1. ALIEN. When the worm alien pops out the guys chest at the bar, that references a very gory scene in Alien. In fact, the actor is the same in Spaceballd and Alien, which is why he says “not again”. 2. 1960s Planet of the Apes. The ending reveals a statue of liberty half covered in sediment, revealing that the “distant planet” was earth all along. The megamaid is meant to look like the statue and of course there are apes riding horses just like the reference film.
But there's more. The song and dance routine the alien performs is from a 1950s Warner Bros. cartoon called "One Froggy Evening." At least that's how I recognized it. ua-cam.com/video/YRWlbX92B3I/v-deo.html

Someone probably pointed this out already but the guy in the restaurant who had the alien jump out of his gut was John Hurt. He was a good friend of Mel Brooks and agreed to re-enact the chest burster scene from Alien - where he was the first victim. Hence the line: "Oh no, not again!"

Blazing Saddles is sort of the most important one, because a lot of the humor got political, and pretty *brutal* in it's commentary, and a lot of it is even more relevant today than when it was made. I waaas going to suggest Sneakers, but maybe another Mel Brooks, like blazing saddles.

She should watch it but you can't make that movie now days let alone react to it
I'd suggest Robin Hood: Men in Tights, because she's already drooled over Cary Elwes is Princess Bride.
@@awkwardashleigh Oh *definitely* Blazing Saddles. Also 'Planes Trains and Automobiles' starring John Candy who played 'Barf'. And the guy who makes the noises is Michael Winslow who gained Fame in the 'Police Academy' series of movies. Maybe partake in a few of them too - but they do get progressively worse. But PLEASE find time to watch 'A Fish Called Wanda'. So funny that someone died laughing watching it - recommendation enough surely ! Another comedy you may like it "Airplane"
Also have you thought of doing classic horror movies for october?
It would help her get the Alien reference at the dinner.
Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet) was BIG in the 80s and early 90s. He mostly played "Geek" roles, and he's probably best known for playing the dad in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids trilogy. He semi-retired in 1997 after his wife died of cancer, so he can take care of his daughter.
We're all very excited about the announcement that he's coming back to film -cough- the Honey I Shrunk the Kids reboot... Never mind that we'd prefer to see him in the new Ghostbusters movie, or a sequel to Spaceballs, or god forbid another Flintstones movie!
*ahem*
But he's coming back to us, and that's what counts.
The new "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids!" is gonna take place after the original film.
"I'm going to be honest with you..I hate..." - me: Don't you dare!
Up next I would recommend Ferris Bueller's Day Off
A marathon of John Hughes movies would be wonderful.
She's right in the demo.
That movie doesn’t hold up for me
This movie was made at the height of the Transformers toy craze, they were the Tickle Me Elmo toy of that Christmas time. The ship turning into Mega-Maid made perfect sense for the era for that reason.
I'm pretty sure it's a reference to Unicron's transformation sequence.
@@AlexSeverinski I doubt that very much. This is Mel Brooks we're talking about. Whatever he's doing, it's not watching Transformers cartoons, which are unabashed half-hour toy commercials anyway. I think they would make Mel depressed and angry.
@@michaelccozens It was one of the more popular cartoons at the time, which made it ripe to parody. There's also the fact that a modified Transformers coloring book and lunchbox were among the merchandise seen earlier in the movie, modified to have the Spaceballs logo on it.
@@AlexSeverinski Popular with who? Not Mel Brooks.
Not sure the point you're making here. The props dept modified a few pieces of merch for props, so there must be a single hidden and very-specific Transformers reference in the script?
@@michaelccozens The movie is a spoof of science fiction in general, Star Wars specifically. And Transformers was popular with the film's intended audience, which was kids and young adults who would watch popular sci-fi.

Wow!! i didn't know that at all that Mel was actually in the movie!
Blazing Saddles wasn't politically correct at the time it was released, which was the entire point.
John Candy is great.
If you go the John Candy route, you will want to see Uncle Buck. It is very funny.
Pre-watch: Girl, y'all need a cuppa Joe!
never mind... lol
Mel actually called George Lucas and told him his idea, George told him to go for it.
The 4th wall is never safe around Mel Brooks.
The guy in the helmet is Rick Moranis.
His ability to make those sounds (and many, many others) is what got him the part.
When you see Alien (1979), it will make more sense
When you see the original Planet of the Apes (1968), it will make more sense.
When you see Prince Valiant (1954), it will make more sense
et cetera...
"Spaceballs" is mildly amusing, but Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are Mel Brooks' best work.
Agreed!
To Be or Not to Be (1983)
The Producers is one of his top films. Dick Shawn. Springtime for Hitler. That is a classic!
@@clutchpedalreturnsprg7710 I prefer the Lubitsch original.
And high anxiety. Too!!!!
Bill Pullman got promoted from Eagle 5 to Eagle 1 in Independence Day.

Phil Nolan according to the JustWatch app, it’s on Netflix and some others.
"Is that guy narcoleptic?" -- his name is Prince Valium. Do the math. :D

Oh dear God.
What hump?
Bill Pullman, as Lonestar was also the the President in Independence Day
Mel Brooks is a genius. You can't go wrong with his stuff.
If you're going to explore the Mel Brooks library, "Robin Hood, Men in Tights"

It's one thing to not apologise for accidently spoiling an old movie for someone, because the majority of people have seen it, so you expect not to need to worry about accidently spoiling when talking about it, but it's another thing to spoil the ending of a movie for someone you 100% know hasn't watched it yet
@@Marcosaur03 - I got a bit of a tongue lashing from a co-worker in the mid-1990s when I revealed the ending to "The Graduate," a classic movie that was almost 30 years old by then! Hey, Ashleigh! Love your channel. Mel Brooks movies go like this:
1. Blazing Saddles, a spoof of old cowboy movies
2. Young Frankenstein, spoofs the Frankenstein movies
3. History of the World. Has a musical number I'm sure you'll enjoy.
Blazing Saddles is sort of the most important one, because a lot of the humor got political, and pretty *brutal* in it's commentary, and a lot of it is even more relevant today than when it was made. You're going to laugh AS you're cringing and squirming. And you're going to make that "O" face at the camera you make when you got shocked.
