Never get tired of listening to these stories, I bought the single, Apache in 1960 when I was Fourteen. That same year started to learn the drums and played for the next 30yrs, Tony Meehan was the man.

I enjoy listening to Bruce Welch's dialogues, entertaining and humorous.

The leading picture off their first album, which by the way will stand out for as long as the Shadows music is played, features a Fender Telecastor. That too was an iconic instrument and is still used world wide, mainly in the Country music genre. These guys are and will forever be the most dynamic instrumental group in the world. Keep it up boys.

Sadly, as so many of us of Bruce's age group would admit, memories are not quite as reliable as they used to be. There are several photographs taken in 1961 showing Hank and Bruce using the matching rosewood necked Stratocasters and it is believed that the first appearance of them was at the NME Pollwinners Concert at Wembley on 5th March 1961 for which there is a well publicised photograph of Hank with his. Several of the Shadows' recordings made in 1961/2 are definitely made with the Rosewood Stratocasters.

Yes it was 61 but I think Hank still used the old one for recording until late 61.

That iconic first LP album cover with the Red ST from 1961 is a fantastic photo with the original ST Hank is holding, I spent may hours playing along to those tracks in 1983 and in 99 managed to get a 1959 project stratocaster guitar, now restored like that one. I still love playing their music.

There is footage of Cliff and The Shadows early 60s performing Wilie and the hand jive on tv and Bruce is using his Telecaster so it appears he did use it but not as much as his Strat and Jazzmaster guitars

It was DEFINITELY 1961! The Shads used the matching set at least as early as their mid-'61 appearance on "Thank Your Lucky Stars", as well as in their (summer 1961) sequences for "The Young Ones".

Hi Jim, I am forgetting of course the two appearance on 'Crackerjack' in April 1961 when they played FBI and The Frightened City. I today also found an image from The Stockton Globe on 7th February 1961 where they are using matching Stratocasters. That pre-dates even my previous knowledge of the earliest appearance of these guitars.

Yes, 1961. Not only did the matched set appear in "the Young Ones", etc. but they definitely had them when I saw Cliff/Shadows live in Auckland, New Zealand in October 1961.

For the 61 s a tour they all played matching fiesta fenders, i have often wondered if they brought those guitars along as i dont figure there were any fenders in africa during march, same went for the amps, could not remember what they used, the name vox was still to be invented in our vocabularly

The Fender Strats were the guitars for The Shadows, when they got the matching set they started having tuning problems this went on until 1964 they changed over to Burns guitars. I've always thought that the Burns guitars were far superior than the Fender Strats they played well and they looked good, I play a Burns Marvin bass guitar it's the best bass guitar I've ever played .

Wonderful to hear Bruce's reminiscences. There's no mention of the Telecaster hanging on the back of his chair in the picture on the cover of their first LP though, did he use that at all?. (There's a partial shot of it around 1:33.) A bit of a side issue here, but I've always thought the rhythm guitar part on Apache sounded like it was played on an acoustic, and Wikipedia does say it was played on a Gibson J200 borrowed from Cliff Richard. Does anybody have any thoughts off this?

Hi Paul, does Bruce still have the rosewood Stratocaster? I’ve always wandered does Hank still have his rosewood Strat with the birdseye maple, from ‘61?

From all the information available, the only Fenders owned by members of the group in the very early days were the 34346 Strat (owned by Cliff rather than The Shadows, of course), the sunburst Jazzmaster (Bruce) and the sunburst Precision (Jet). Once the group were issued with (loaned) matching red guitars by Jennings during the first half of 1961, the red Strat went back to Cliff, Bruce sold his Jazzmaster (possibly to Brian Parker of The Hunters) and presumably, Jet did something similar with the 'burst Precision. Later (c.1964/1965), Hank bought a new Fender Bass VI and it was used on "Stingray", as well as on (part of) the "Finders Keepers Medley", "Thunderbirds Theme" and "Zero X Theme". Hank still has that bass, in Australia - it has been pictured in his studio. From then onward, and discounting vintage and reissue Fender basses with rosewood fretboards, all the Fender guitars owned and played by The Shadows have had one-piece maple fretboards, stretching from the 1958 Strat bought by Hank from Patrice Bastien, through 34346 and the 1979 Anniversary Stratocaster right up to the 1980s and 1990s Custom Shop models made for Hank.

@@jimnugent2700 that’s great, so they were just loaners? I remember that Hanks also had gold hardware, rare during that era.
