Pino is awesome, and for me is the pick of these guys by a fair margin. 'Try' is a good album, but it seems to have been mixed to emphasize a live blues sound and in doing so Pino's bass sounds very woolly/indistinct and low in the mix. I was disappointed with the production to be honest - how hard can it be to mix a three piece band??
Justin Daley Indeed! John Mayer Trio live at the Ballroom is a lot better, but nothing beats his Crossroads 2010 performance, or his Trio show Live in LA. Pino on 110%!
Impeccable tone. I know there's some guys out there hatin on Mr. Mayer but you can't say he can't play. He's a great guitarist. Just because he's got a pretty boy face don't make him any less good.
john mayer is the american dream for this generation, that's why most guitar players either love him for doing what they want to do, or hate him for doing what they wish they did... period. dude's got the chops, leave him be...you could be next...
I had no idea that Mr. Mayer was such an excellent ax-man. Wow! But, at the same time the drums really hooked me on this tune. Just fantastic - all the way around. Very well done!
saw "Red" last night....and LOVED that this song was in it!! I'm from New Orleans, so the song was very familiar, and The Meters, the group that originally did the song, are credited with founding "funk" music....Great band!!
wow, this is pretty cool...I never knew how dope Mayer was until i saw him perform at Clapton's guitar festival a few years back...before that I'd only seen him on TV and thought he was kinda lame...but this cover is sweet, real clean and nice tone...and the drummer really gets the feel with that stripped down kit!
@SirSampsonSimpson its not about becoming the meters, who were obviously more funky. he's making it his own. he's a top notch guitar player and this solo is quite nice
@pattyhillo...I give him much love and props because as big as Chris Brown is, all he can do is imitate MJ. For a white dude to pick a song by the Meters says more for him than many others.
…if you ever see any of his interviews you will likely appreciate him more; I didn’t listen to John Mayer until I saw him play, he has style and the groove like BB King; he’s the real-deal!
Check out John Mayer from the Bowery Room. He plays this in the middle of the show at some point and gives credit to the Meters. Maybe, like a lot of other musicians he enjoys and respects those who laid the groundwork for him and plays their music as an homage. Get over yourself and your loathing of Mayer. He's a great guitar player, a student of all types of music and has mastered the instrument. Any guitar player that isn't self-obsessed and self absorbed will be able to see and admit to that
@wmcglinchey I'd say somebody needs a diaper change. See that little "x" in the top right of your screen (or left if you are on a mac)? Go ahead and click it, your problem is solved. No need to belittle somebody for musical taste, if you like it thats great, if you don't like it there are 25 Million other music videos to watch. Happy listening.
Steve Jordan makes this song sexy man...go see the movie "RED" with Bruce Willis, the opening scene for when they go 2 Chicago at the end of the movie has a sexy version of "cissy strut" ull love it!
Looky here fellas .... I am as big of a dickhead snob as anyone here. Really have a hard time with digital processing on such soulful songs, but I have to say whoever this " John Mayer" is - he nailed it.
Dude, you have no idea what your talking about. This sounds amazing and they made it their own. This is live brother, and they are a trio. Oh yeah, Stanley Jordan is playing it on a cocktail kit and it sounds amazing.
I love how when someone says John isn't the best guitar player alive, they get a "thumbs down". Hey, I'm not saying I'm not a fan, or that I don't think he's good, but if you think he is the greatest alive, than you are illustrating that you aren't aware of the true greats.
i prefer mayers version, but thats only because of the dirty guitar sound and the tone he gets from that batterd old strat. im lovin the tone in that guitar solo, its sex like
Though i'm no fan of John Mayer it's refreshing to see a young musician inspired by musicianship(The Meters)and not a fucking gimmick, there might hope for the youth yet!
i'm not a big fan of john mayer, especially not of his singing, but this is great!! great solo where is normally the organ solo, so tight and funky! good one mayer!
@jamieakabear2316 you aint kidding.A $7000 custom shop black1 strat,an EVH $25,000 CS franken strat,$11,000 SRV lenny strat,$10 mill worth of vintage watches and he can get any girl he wants haha.I think the only reason anyone has to hate on him is jealousy.
This is John Mayer playing their song - Go watch the original version if you don't like Mayer, instead of filling this video with moronic side-comments.
You betcha, to hear the original (perfect) recording, search youtube for "The Meters - Cissy Strut" The band is The Meters, from New Orleans. They had a huge influence on all sorts of music, from Robert Palmer to John Mayer.
Ace - a different funk feel with the drums there, real 2nd line hand bass drum sound with the cocktail kit! COOL better than the meters are playing it in recent times. PINO YOU RULE
@jamieakabear2316 he's not playing a dumble in this video, its a two rock. and i think its his signature two rock but i cant be too sure. the tweed "amp" on top is a fender reverb unit.
John is a very respectable player, kudos to him for actually doing it and not talking about it. Love Pino's playing too!!
Hey this was a pleasant surprize! I love that he called some cats who can actually play the groove! He seems to respect his "ancestors" so-to-speak.
That's the best cover of the Cissy Strut that I've ever heard. He's talented!!!
The trio makes every song sound good.
I didn't realize Pino Palladino played with Mayer until I saw this. Pino is a ridiculous bass player. This is a great trio.
They've done some fantastic trio work! album 'Try' is live recorded and it is excellent!
Pino is awesome, and for me is the pick of these guys by a fair margin. 'Try' is a good album, but it seems to have been mixed to emphasize a live blues sound and in doing so Pino's bass sounds very woolly/indistinct and low in the mix. Cissy strut. Nailed it. A colab maybe???
those who hate are the same that say size don't matter
john mayer is the american dream for this generation, that's why most guitar players either love him for doing what they want to do, or hate him for doing what they wish they did... period. dude's got the chops, leave him be...you could be next...
I had no idea that Mr. Mayer was such an excellent ax-man. Wow! But, at the same time the drums really hooked me on this tune. Just fantastic - all the way around. Very well done!
That drum groove is amazing. Steve jordan is a great drummer. He really has a feel for the groove in what ever he's playing
The Meters - The true essence of FUNK!!!!!!
Mayer does a nice job with Their Hit
saw "Red" last night....and LOVED that this song was in it!! I'm from New Orleans, so the song was very familiar, and The Meters, the group that originally did the song, are credited with founding "funk" music....Great band!!
He played that funky music. ;)
That guitar tone rips me a new one every time. Love it
john mayer is such a jazz man, this is fabulous!
I love his face at the end...nailed it. LOVE this video!
@CurtZ59 he's trying new things.. even though he's better around other styles of music, that doesn't mean he can't play a meters cover well
lovely strat tone
that solo is crazy, thats fu*king fast.. i like his playing
i love how john mayer puts his own little twist on every cover that he does....it still sounds amazing
wow, this is pretty cool...I never knew how dope Mayer was until i saw him perform at Clapton's guitar festival a few years back...before that I'd only seen him on TV and thought he was kinda lame...but this cover is sweet, real clean and nice tone...and the drummer really gets the feel with that stripped down kit!
This comment is an Old Gem
@SirSampsonSimpson its not about becoming the meters, who were obviously more funky. he's making it his own. he's a top notch guitar player and this solo is quite nice
tight. love steve on the cocktail kit.
He's doing this for redcross.. and people are arguing about watches, equipment, who is better than who. tsk..
that's some of the best guitar tone EVER.
Fender strat ❤
Dude has the key ingredient - GROOVE - feel and taste over flashy licks... love it!
John Mayer... and the Meters! Great cover!
@palisse38 John Mayer is a guitar player and the original version was played by a guitar player - The Meters did it
This is a song for guitars imo
3 of the finest.
I love the face he makes at the end...Yeah..I nailed it! Go Johnny Go!!!!
The guy's got great taste that's for sure
@palisse38 it's a lighter, more intimate version of the song; hence the cocktail drum
i originally went to this video to bash mayer, but he seriously has the soul/funkiness
This is great. I see a lot of people complaining. That happens when someone is good. Haters.
@pattyhillo...I give him much love and props because as big as Chris Brown is, all he can do is imitate MJ. For a white dude to pick a song by the Meters says more for him than many others.
Wouldn't be so many haters if John Mayer had spent more time in the sun. Just stating a fact, own up to it.
well come on like, wonderful guitar playing, one of the best alive
This was a great jam. Wish I had a chance to drum for this guy!
…if you ever see any of his interviews you will likely appreciate him more; I didn’t listen to John Mayer until I saw him play, he has style and the groove like BB King; he’s the real-deal!

Love this song, as my drum teacher had me play along to it!!!
@TheJQ1971 would you like to elaborate to how this exactly "blows"?
so true. very little is original, but thats whats make people musicians- their ability to transform someone elses work into their own.
How exactly does this sound "pretty crappy?"
@wmcglinchey I'd say somebody needs a diaper change. See that little "x" in the top right of your screen (or left if you are on a mac)? Go ahead and click it, your problem is solved. that strat is SOOOO AWESOME!!

Stanley? ... STEVE. STEVE JORDAN.
Sorry, Steve. My mistake. Its actually Michael.
Jeremy Avraham I'm not feeling john mayer's shuffle though.. Steve jordan was on point!
Its fucking amazing
Jeremy Avraham “they made it their own” by ripping off SRV. “Body is a Wonderland” is what Mayer really sounds like. He is a scab on the strat.
Cool!!!!
being born with the gift of judgment is something you should be proud of. it is noteworthy.
johnny can play that six string.
take a look at the trio stuff. The originals they play are sick
I love how when someone says John isn't the best guitar player alive, they get a "thumbs down". Hey, I'm not saying I'm not a fan, or that I don't think he's good, but if you think he is the greatest alive, than you are illustrating that you aren't aware of the true greats.
Amen. Like the old saying goes: 'Game recognizes game' Or in this case greatness recognizes greatness.
that guitar is BEAUTIFUL! both in tone and looks.
Pino Palladino
Wow!! Is that actually MTV, when they had music?
i prefer mayers version, but thats only because of the dirty guitar sound and the tone he gets from that batterd old strat.
im lovin the tone in that guitar solo, its sex like
Who the heck is the bass player? Job well done!!
Pino Palladino!
PINOOOOOOOO!!!
Steve Jordan rockin that funky little set!
Though i'm no fan of John Mayer it's refreshing to see a young musician inspired by musicianship(The Meters)and not a fucking gimmick, there might hope for the youth yet!
@Ardolino21 just because he tries different things means that he doesn't have his own sound?? don't even act like you know what you're talking about.
The Dumble amp certainly helps....I hear Mayer has horded over 20 of these precious little beasts (at 15-25K a piece)
Not sure who the bassist is, but shout out to Steve Jordan on drums. Oh, yeah, and a shout out to John Mayer on guitar, as well. That boy can play!
Bassist is the great Pino Palladino
@DylanGalvinMusic don't listen to him mate, i think you're pretty good.
53 people dont got souls
The funny thing is if mayer didn't do all these covers, I would have never known that he was a pretty damn good guitarist
i'm not a big fan of john mayer, especially not of his singing, but this is great!! great solo where is normally the organ solo, so tight and funky! good one mayer!
Nice!!!
PINO
in his signature and in many other guitars john uses big dipper pickups with a scooped mid range set specifically to his liking.
greatest tone of all time
check out the RC booster or ac booster or EP booster from xotic effects. or a keeley tubescreamer with the drive down
@jamieakabear2316 you aint kidding.A $7000 custom shop black1 strat,an EVH $25,000 CS franken strat,$11,000 SRV lenny strat,$10 mill worth of vintage watches and he can get any girl he wants haha.I think the only reason anyone has to hate on him is jealousy.
This is John Mayer playing their song - Go watch the original version if you don't like Mayer, instead of filling this video with moronic side-comments.
me too, cuz of the organ and the drums in the original, but pretty crappy? come on man this solo is the bomb and you know it!
literally the best tone of all time
Nice rendition of the classic Meters tune 👍🏽
Pino, Pino, Pino. You are a groove God!
Thats the best Cissy Strut i've heard so far...
almost as good as the meters awesome!!!!
The dude's so cool
that may be the case but hes done a lot more donating to charities than you have.
the strut is a funk classic.
John is the Man here!
johnny mayer doin the meters? love itttt, wish frusciante and the chilis covered this funky stuff too, soooo good :]
First saw Mayer on Herbie Hancock's album. Seems to be a real fan of numerous genres of music.
You betcha, to hear the original (perfect) recording, search youtube for "The Meters - Cissy Strut"
The band is The Meters, from New Orleans. They had a huge influence on all sorts of music, from Robert Palmer to John Mayer.
i love the sound at 1:06
The Cocktail snare sounds just right!
Ace - a different funk feel with the drums there, real 2nd line hand bass drum sound with the cocktail kit! COOL better than the meters are playing it in recent times. PINO YOU RULE
Why do you hate him?
he is sooo cool, dont deny it
Good point, and well said my friend.
dude he's playing the verse the way the Meters wrote it, chill out.
he didn't actually... he played it wrong... listen to the original
@@katsky26 Who gives a shit
Yeah, nice cocktail drum stuff.
@jamieakabear2316 he's not playing a dumble in this video, its a two rock. and i think its his signature two rock but i cant be too sure. the tweed "amp" on top is a fender reverb unit.
yeeeeessssss
q buen vidio quisiera tocar como john mayer!!!
Even though this video recorded more than 16 years ago, my guitar instructor just taught me this cover :D
