    An deinen zarten weißen Fingern
    An deinem goldenen Haar
    An deinen schneeweißen Brüsten

the short version is a younge lady is being disscussed by her elders who are deciding who she should be married to. they want her to marry a king or a prince, and so they arrange the marrige. but on the night of the wedding, she elopes with a poor sailor whom her elders did not want her to marry.

According to google the english lyrics translate to:
    Rosy youth
    They deliberated
To whom would they marry their kinswoman this year

We want you to wed the king's son
Who has more gold than poor Roland has land
    Wed the king's son
Who has more gold than poor Roland has land

On Saturday and Sunday the bid was set
Monday and Tuesday we shall see what she gets
    The bid was set
Monday and Tuesday we shall see what she gets

On Wednesday and Thursday the wine was made
Friday and Saturday they drank to honour the day
    Wine was made
Friday and Saturday they drank to honour the day

They drank for days, they drank for two,
But the bride wouldn't to the chamber go
    They drank for two
But the bride wouldn't to the chamber go

They drank for days, they drank for three
But the bridal bed she refused to see
    They drank for three
But the bridal bed she refused to see

Then entered in a poor ship's hand
Dressed in a blue blouse both tattered and torn
    Poor ship's hand
Dressed in a blue blouse both tattered and torn

He stood at the table and he spoke
I see only masts and the places they go
    And he spoke
I see only masts and the places they go

And the maiden went up to the high loft
And ran down the path to the broad sea shore
    Went to the high loft
And ran down the path to the broad sea shore

She ran on the rocks, she tiptoed
But took great care to mind the blue waves below
    she tiptoed
But took great care to mind the blue waves below

And she was invited on board the ship
And there they lavished her with both mead and wine
    On board ship
And there they lavished her with both mead and wine

I see I see on your small white fingers
The wedding ring has not been there for long
    Small white fingers
The wedding ring has not been there for long

I see I see on your golden hair
That the bridal wreath was not there before yesterday
    Golden hair
That the bridal wreath was not there before yesterday

I see I see on your snow-white breasts
That small children they have not yet consoled
    Snow-white breasts
That small children they have not yet consoled

And now the maiden lays at poor Roland's side
She feels neither sorrow nor anguish
    Rosy youth
    At poor Roland's side
She feels neither sorrow nor anguish

+Hans Power It's because both German and Swedish are Germanic Languages...

    • @MrBitchimo
      @MrBitchimo 9 років тому +9

+Hans Power They are related. The language might have been altered through the germans, not to much I gather, since both languages are two branches from the same roots. I presume that you know germans, especially "Hansan" had great influence over Stockholm during the 1300-1400 while king Albrekt of Mecklenburg was the swedish king. He was later overthrown the Danish queen, Margareta.

+MrBitchimo I once read (in a book, not on Google :) that centuries ago, people in Germanic lands, Scandinavia, and the Anglo-Saxon British Isles could somewhat understand each other, because their languages hadn't diverged to the point that they have today. I am not saying that they shared the same language, just that there were common elements between them that they recognized.

Yeh, but keep in mind that this song has about 500 years or even more. Plus, you can read it as you see it as long as it's in song, lyrics law I'd say. And as far as I am concerned Holy Writ and such texts are read without assimilation, so 'mig' as 'mig' not 'mej' and so on.

"Oh" is way closer to the way the vast majority of Swedes pronounce it, both now and historically. The closest I can think of would be the english 'a' in 'all'. 'Ock' is TV-language, not spoken Swedish.

  • @arscill1
    @arscill1 13 років тому +2

@thedomay Formally 'och' is pronounced as 'okk', more relaxed everyday swedish it's like MrsRagnara says - 'oh' - eller as 'å' (ao).

No we don't. we pronounciate "de" with a regular e, like we do in the word "tre", and we pronounciate "dam" with a regluar "a", like in "ja". And the konsonants are pronounciated regularly aswell.
There's really few silent letters in swedish. In old Swedish the letter "f" could be silent sometimes and we sometimes tend to make "h" silent aswell, just like in english. "M" is never silent.
