Great song, but strange translations that are not in line with the actual tone of the original lyrics. Just one example: "I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej" is a request and not a demand. If keeping the old tone it should be more like: "Wouldn't you so answer with but a yes or a no". And not: "You may answer only yes or no". It being a "request" is important as it goes with the manipulating tone of the woman singing. She is trying to bribe someone, you don't make demands in that situation. That was one the most magical things I have ever read plus the vocals was damn fine too and the poetry is really nice too almost as good as the ancient arab poetry
There a lot of variations on this song that (and some of them are mighty well to hear, too) make this piece of poetry into a rock song. However, this beautifully sung and played variation does the deep sadness of the text justice. I sometimes wonder how the story continues. Or how it would have continued had the knight heeded the troll. I think most people are at some point in their lives one or the other of these two. Thanks for sharing. Thus I learned of this band.
People here sem to forget that this is a piece of music open to many layers of interpretation. More so because of how our(I'm Swedish) language usually conveys nuances and meaning through context, intonation and implication rather than to use a specific word for a specific nuance or point on the spectrum of the subject. We tend to be direct and to the point when we speak which as a contrast makes us very vague when we use our language for poetry or song or other artistic works where we are not able to take a direct approach. Ours is not a very abstract language. I guess my point is that this song conveys more messages than one and can be interpreted in more ways in modern days than people could/did in medieval/post medieval times. In fact, if you go even further back to when we Scandinavians hadn't sold ourselves to the christian god and culture there is yet another interpretation of this song. To me personally this song speaks of the arrogance and foolishness of a boy/young man who is decieved by his own prejudice and preconceptions as he rejects the trolless who at the end is indicated to have truly wanted him and had not been trying to decieve him. To me it also speaks of the culturally self-destructive nature of christianity(or really any of the dominant monotheistic religions). I suppose I take it literally as sort of a fairy tale in which the troll is an actual mythological troll rather than a pagan.

So I decided I want to have this song saved inside my head and started memorizing the lyrics. Last night I was practicing and singing it very very quietly and softly. Sung that way, Manneligs phrase stopped being a harsh renounce. It was like he was explaining that it just isn't possible for him to marry her and pitying her too for being an outcast. ... There are other variants on this theme throughout the northern world. The English "King Henry" tells a similar tale except that the man agrees to sleep with an ugly hag (he has little choice with more emphasis on brutal requests he rejects), upon which he is rewarded when she is revealed to be a beautiful woman. The Scandinavian trolls seem irredeemable in their folklore.
It's a rather common theme in old Scandinavian stories that the trolls and faeries and other oknytt are rather pitiable. Most of their schemes revolve around desperately trying to gain a good soul so that they can survive after death in the realm of heaven. But though we may find them sympathetic and pitiable, we must never concede to them: If you'll notice the song above for example, the troll offered Mannelig all manners of riches, but she never once offered him her heart or her love or her faithfulness, despite her giving him those things being the only way that she could have gained a soul... Well, that, or I suppose god could've just, you know, not have been an a-hole by having provided them souls in the first place?
I don't know if explaining softly is better. I always thought about the repetition of the refrain, "just say if you want to or not". And the last time, after his rejection, "I've been telling you to just say a simple yes or no, it would have been enough." He didn't have to elaborate, harshly or otherwise.

Just a note to anyone reading the comments. This song is neither medieval nor ancient in any other way, its from the 19th century. Not saying it's bad, just that it's not as old as it might seem
I've read some confusion and discussion in the comments about the song, to help clarify for none natives read this. A "Troll" in Swedish folklore is not like the big beasts from fantasy. They where very much humanlike, but would have long tails with a tuft of hair on the end. They could often do magic and/or be very strong. There was different breeds of them, Forest, Mountain, River, Sea troll etc. And basically they lived side by side with humans but out in the wilds. In this case this is a mountain troll maid, according to legend the young maids could be very beautiful, they would shrivel into ugly old trolls as they aged but they lived far longer then ordinary humans. The troll males was most often burly, hairy and ugly with big noses. Mountain trolls was also known for having vast riches hidden in their mountain halls and was most often seen as the ruling class of trolls. Humans, mostly females and children would be abducted into these mountain halls. And travelers could sometimes be invited, but if you ate or drank anything you were forever trapped to live with them or until they decided to let you go. Anyway basically the story in this song goes that this troll maid gets infatuated with this Squire or Knight and offers him gifts so he will accept her hand in marriage. Him being a good Christian is spurning her despite her gifts because the church hold them as evil in league with Satan. So for those wondering she was probably very beautiful and the gifts she offered him would by these days standards be aching to becoming a millionaire.

This is a common theme in medieval folklore where magical creatures like Fairies,elves, trolls etc desperately try to get Christian people to marry them so they can get an immortal soul and go to heaven because that's the one thing they cannot have.
this folkloric trope is inverted in the Little Mermaid fairy tale where the mermaid ends up gaining semi-immortality even after getting rejected by the prince because of her selflessness (it can be seen as the author HC Andersen's way of saying that you don't need another person's love to gain salvation)

Nyström is fairly common in Sweden. Not sure what there is to dislike about it, however i can imagine mispronounciations being annoying if its a thing that bugs you easily.

The song literally calls her a mountain troll in Swedish and these sorts of stories are plentiful all over Sweden.Every where there are stone formations whit old tales of trolls and giants being turned to rock. This song is probably a christian version of a earlier pagan original since the text is from the 1200-1300 yet parts of the descriptions of gifts seem to herald from a earlier time. But the meaning could be as you say, but being Swedish and actually knowing these old folktales i kinda doubt it. There are pre-Christian versions of similar tales.

I have listened to this for years. I keep coming back to it. I am American and I love looking back at my ancestry, but I feel like those native look down and laugh at people like me. Maybe I’ve just met the wrong people. I personally feel like I have no past sometimes because I don’t think anything American is our own. We took so many things and just called it ours.
Germanic and Celtic heritage is hereditary not geographical. For example, I probably have more German in my genes than a lot of Germans. I think the problem comes when I, for example, say I'm German, it is taken as if I am saying culturally I'm German. The beautiful thing about our Germanic Tribal history is that those tribes and their traditions only live on through our blood that ties us to them. And us to each other.
I think you should learn Swedish. There are twice as many speakers of Swedish than in Norwegian and Swedish is a language which hasn't been dominated by Danish like Norwegian has.
even though I'm french, speaking english and a bit of german allows me to understand more than 30% of the song, it is wonderful. this song comes from the last times of northern pagan religion, she was not a monster, but one of the last woman to believe in the old Gods. The song is beautiful but when you think about the story behind it is really sad, there are the lasts breaths of an entire religion, culture, way of thinking and philosophy. I would love a world where christianity did not destroyed every single culture it has conquered. It would be glorious to have, still today, people who believe in the old gods of their country.

Great song, but strange translations that are not in line with the actual tone of the original lyrics.
Just one example: "I kunnen väl svara endast ja eller nej" is a request and not a demand.
If keeping the old tone it should be more like: "Wouldn't you so answer with but a yes or a no". And not: "You may answer only yes or no".
It being a "request" is important as it goes with the manipulating tone of the woman singing. She is trying to bribe someone, you don't make demands in that situation.
The song is a variant of the temptations of the devil theme, that was popular back in the day. The offerings are kingly gifts, owning twelve mills would make you very rich.

There a lot of variations on this song that (and some of them are mighty well to hear, too) make this piece of poetry into a rock song. However, this beautifully sung and played variation does the deep sadness of the text justice. I sometimes wonder how the story continues. Or how it would have continued had the knight heeded the troll. I think most people are at some point in their lives one or the other of these two. Thanks for sharing. Thus I learned of this band.

People here sem to forget that this is a piece of music open to many layers of interpretation.
More so because of how our(I'm Swedish) language usually conveys nuances and meaning through context, intonation and implication rather than to use a specific word for a specific nuance or point on the spectrum of the subject.
We tend to be direct and to the point when we speak which as a contrast makes us very vague when we use our language for poetry or song or other artistic works where we are not able to take a direct approach. Ours is not a very abstract language.
I guess my point is that this song conveys more messages than one and can be interpreted in more ways in modern days than people could/did in medieval/post medieval times.
In fact, if you go even further back to when we Scandinavians hadn't sold ourselves to the christian god and culture there is yet another interpretation of this song.
To me personally this song speaks of the arrogance and foolishness of a boy/young man who is decieved by his own prejudice and preconceptions as he rejects the trolless who at the end is indicated to have truly wanted him and had not been trying to decieve him. To me it also speaks of the culturally self-destructive nature of christianity(or really any of the dominant monotheistic religions).
I suppose I take it literally as sort of a fairy tale in which the troll is an actual mythological troll rather than a pagan.

He could have had riches, fabulous treasures and a magical sword of bling making him invincible in battle, but he declined all of that for the sake of righteousness. I don't know if explaining softly is better. I always thought about the repetition of the refrain, "just say if you want to or not". And the last time, after his rejection, "I've been telling you to just say a simple yes or no, it would have been enough." He didn't have to elaborate, harshly or otherwise.

The grammar reminds me of 17th century Swedish. Maybe it originated in that time but wasn’t recorded to exist until the 19th century.

I've read some confusion and discussion in the comments about the song, to help clarify for none natives read this.
A "Troll" in Swedish folklore is not like the big beasts from fantasy.
They where very much humanlike, but would have long tails with a tuft of hair on the end. They could often do magic and/or be very strong. There was different breeds of them, Forest, Mountain, River, Sea troll etc. And basically they lived side by side with humans but out in the wilds.
In this case this is a mountain troll maid, according to legend the young maids could be very beautiful, they would shrivel into ugly old trolls as they aged but they lived far longer then ordinary humans. The troll males was most often burly, hairy and ugly with big noses.
Mountain trolls was also known for having vast riches hidden in their mountain halls and was most often seen as the ruling class of trolls.
Humans, mostly females and children would be abducted into these mountain halls.
And travelers could sometimes be invited, but if you ate or drank anything you were forever trapped to live with them or until they decided to let you go.
Anyway basically the story in this song goes that this troll maid gets infatuated with this Squire or Knight and offers him gifts so he will accept her hand in marriage. Him being a good Christian is spurning her despite her gifts because the church hold them as evil in league with Satan.
So for those wondering she was probably very beautiful and the gifts she offered him would by these days standards be aching to becoming a millionaire.

Nyström is fairly common in Sweden. Not sure what there is to dislike about it, however i can imagine mispronounciations being annoying if its a thing that bugs you easily.

This song is probably a christian version of a earlier pagan original since the text is from the 1200-1300 yet parts of the descriptions of gifts seem to herald from a earlier time. But the meaning could be as you say, but being Swedish and actually knowing these old folktales i kinda doubt it. There are pre-Christian versions of similar tales.

I have listened to this for years. I keep coming back to it. I am American and I love looking back at my ancestry, but I feel like those native look down and laugh at people like me. Maybe I’ve just met the wrong people. I personally feel like I have no past sometimes because I don’t think anything American is our own. We took so many things and just called it ours.
