- I show you how to replace Toyota 4Runner subwoofer. The 18 year old Toyota 4Runner JBL synthesis subwoofer finally gave up and blew. I had to replace it because it was rattling so bad! I went to a local audio store for help choosing the best subwoofer to replace the old one.

Unbelievably helpful. I'm not good at fixing cars but got through changing the subwoofer without breaking anything, and it all went back together perfectly! Thanks man, you saved my life here.
Great to hear!
Great video bud! Love seeing a man who takes the time to vacuum and clean up whilst doing the work. That's the sign of a real pro.
You got that right! Thank you!
Thank you so much for pointing out which color wires go to red or black posts on the sub!! This has been so hard to find elsewhere!!
I'm glad I was able to help! Enjoy clean bass again without rattling!
For those wondering you can still get a new sub from Toyota, it comes as a whole assembly with the amp it's right under $400
By new do you mean the same model or an actual upgrade?

Thanks for the tutorial brother! Just swapped my stock sub yesterday. The stock cone had no surround my guy! 😮
I'm glad I could help! No cone no good!
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial!! I was able to change out 2004 with a Pioneer Sub. Easy Peezy Lemon Squeezy! Cheers
Glad it helped!
Very helpful! Thank you very much! Just finished my install with a new Pioneer TS-A2000LD2. Only had two screws left over 😉Kinda cold here and might start raining soon. I'll figure the left over later. 😛
That's awesome!
Great tutorial! Thanks for keeping it nice and simple.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video, people made it sound like you weee replacing a transmission. That’s very doable !
Yes very diy!
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage I did it today, Came out great and sounds great. Thanks again!!
That's awesome! I know it sounds great! You're welcome.
What subwoofer did you choose?
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage I ended up getting the Pioneer, The new one has multiple holes so no need to even drill new one. Easy Peasy. I appreciate you for your help
I have a 2007 limited and bought the same exact kicker sub as you, but mine didn’t fit. The new sub stuck out way too much. I had to go with a pioneer that sounds about the same the old ones. Also… reinstalling that whole side panel was really hard, especially making the clips near the seat belt line up. Thanks for the tutorial though.
Same problem this morning.
i also have an ’07 limited. Which pioneer did you get?
@@AlanReyes-uq4zo the Pioneer TS-A2000LD2 8-inch Shallow-Mount Subwoofer. It’s about $125 online. The holes also line up perfectly so I don’t remember drilling any new holes. Installing this is a bitch but pretty doable. Go padres.
Great video and it convinced me to finally fix the subwoofer that has been broken for years.....since I bought my 2003 4Runner in THAT YEAR!. The best car purchase I've ever made. BTW, I missed the recall to get my dash replaced by the dealership...FREE (ouch). It's got cracks and is the only part of this awesome vehicle that shows its age. Does anyone have a solution for getting a new dash or just making it look better for a fair price? Any help is appreciated. Thanks a ton for this video!!
Dash covers are pretty cheap and it will prevent the dash from further damage
I'm glad I could help. I wonder if anyone gets warrantied dashes out of wrecked 4runners?
Good video
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
What was the Model Of Kicker Sub You got hard to see in video looks Like 48CWRT82 Kicker 8 Inch 2 Ohm Compact Sub
Kicker 48CWRT82 CompR 8" 2-Ohm Subwoofer
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage oh sweet so I was right on the model number awesome appreciate the reply Bro looks Good
Hey bro.
Toyota runs factory 2 ohm units on their JBL.
Your sub says 2 ohm, but you need a 4 ohm subwoofer due to how they wire up.
You’d need to buy the 4ohm kicker subwoofer then connect the two red posts together and run another wire from one red to the vehicle positive wire. Then connect the two black posts together and another wire to the vehicle negative wire.
The factory JBL amp usually only has 400 or so watts too.
I am going to get the kicker comp c 8” to replace my factory JBL sub in my 2008 sequoia due to lower watts at rms.
Just spent $440 on a head unit, wiring.
Spent $330 on four new door speakers (the original JBL speakers have finally worn out after 15 years and 212k miles.
Also replacing the two “cigarette” 12v with a usb/usb outlet and a hdmi / usb outlet (allows for phone mirroring on screen).
Also installing a kicker comp q class 15” subwoofer than runs 1100 watts rms.
I’m exited!
Toyota never die!
Edit: you wired them correctly. So maybe that is why you are using a 2 ohm speaker instead a 4 ohm! Which means….I can’t use the kicker comp c I don’t think haha.
That's awesome! I'd like to get a new head unit and all new speakers eventually. Sequoias are awesome vehicles!
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage yup. Love it. Runs like new. 15 years old and 212k miles.
Good luck.
I’m looking to use these wires as just single input for a LOC converter with pair is the left and which pair is the right. I’m running an loc to my own amp and 2 12s because obviously louder and have the equipment. My biggest problem is finding signal wires to tap in the rear with the 03 4 runner jbl synthesis RDS setup. Most of my speakers are distorted sun is blown and removed and only want to use the jbl amp for front channel 6x9s and cut all other speakers for fill power fronts. This is temporary as I’m going to be bypassing the jbl amp for my own 4 channel and mono block amp setup with a new headunit. This is system is a PITA to find all the proper harnesses on a budget. I want to able able to utilize all 10 speaker locations with maybe buying a new amp or dap to account for the center channel speaker but it’s hard finding much info or builds and I’m starting to see why. Any advice and resources is appreciated I just want my subs and dedicated amp to integrate with some drop in 6x9s on the front to clean up and boost sound
Appreciate the video. But all of this work is not necessary. At least not for the 2006 limiteds. The L shaped piece that contains the speaker hole cutouts, pulls away from that larger panel that you did all that work to remove. Just pry from the top seam and pull away
That's good info, thank you!
You definitely look like a Gorillaz Fan 🔥
Oh yes, lol
My question is the stock jbl sub is dual d2 or d4? And how many inch is the sub? What is the depth of the sub?
Great video! What was the part number for the kicker you replaced the OEM with?
Thank you! I will check and let you know.
You never got back my man!
Does the base sound better than the stoical one when it was working?
Yes
Nice vid! I have a 2008 Toyota highlander and I’m also trying to put in a 8inch kicker but I can’t find anything about the wiring. So I don’t know which wires connect where. How did you find out what wires go where on ur car?
I found my answer on a 4th gen 4runner forum. A local dealership might be able to print out a wiring diagram for your subwoofer.
How does the new sub sound vs the stock sub. Mine is rattling now and its so annoying
The new one sounds 100 times better! Thumps good
Does the sr5 4WD come with the subwoofer box and amp as shown in the video ?
I don't think so. It could possibly be an option to add, though. Usually, there is no storage over the wheel well with sub box and navigation.
Alright then I’m going to have to go custom box and amp attached to it!
Is there a less expensive subwoofer than the Kicker, Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 or Rockford Fosgate ? I wasn't planning on spending $170 on a subwoofer for an automobile that I'm planning on selling shortly. Any much cheaper subs you can recommend that will fit easily and not require any amp issues? Thx!
Any 8 inch 2 ohm subwoofer will work but I can't think of any cheap ones. I will let you know if I find one though.
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage Ive seen some subwoofers that are described as slim or shallow mount and some that are not. The shallows are like 2 inch plus and the normal are like 4 inch plus. It appears the Pioneer, Kicker, Rockford are slim. Would a $74.99 Sklar SDR-8 D2 700 watt with 4.56 mount depth work. Or $79 Sklar VD-8 D2 600 watt Shallow Mount depth of 3.94 work? Any other suggestions?
Thanks
You are welcome
I have the JBL as well and that shit clapping so hard 😭 Don’t wanna take out all 30,000 screws to fix it though lol
It is a lot of work but totally worth it
What is the ohms on the subwoofer
2ohms
Hey how'd you get the carpet anchor out?
I didn't because I couldn't figure it out lol. I was able to work fold the carpet up enough to pull the entire panel out.
Did you think the new speaker was comparable to the OEM JBL? I found the OEM speaker+housing online, but for like $400 ($250 when discounted). Trying to decide if I should just buy the same one, or if just a new speaker would still sound just as good.
I think the aftermarket has a deeper bass but not a huge difference. If you don't want to modify the screw locations and cut the factory connections then get the oem. The oem might be dry rotten unless it's been restored.
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage thank you! I ended up getting the Rockford Fosgate sub; was a toss up between that and the Kicker. Fingers crossed it all works out. Thanks again for the great video-it’ll come in handy in 2 days when the speaker gets here!
@@harleighhumphries9337 let us know how it works. I’m curious if it mounts up well.
@@harleighhumphries9337 could you update us once you install it? I’m also trying to get the same one for mine
@@JP-kj9gw little update: the Fosgate install went well! Super easy once you get all of the panels and stuff out (from this video) and just needed to drill 4 new holes for the new sub. Then just reconnect the wiring and put everything back together! So far from a quick test it sounds like a major upgrade in the bass department.
What if I buy a 10in sub and run it off the built in amp ?
The factory amp won't be adequate enough to make the subwoofer perform to peak performance. I would replace the amp and maybe change all the speakers to 4ohm instead of 2 ohm.
What is the model of that kicker subwoofer ?
Kicker compR 8" CWRT8
@@ToyotaandDodgeGarage is that the dual 4ohm or the dual 2 ohm model ?
What shop did you end up going to?
Sound Station and Security. They are very knowledgeable which saved me time.
I can tell you watch UA-cam to make this happen
Awesome
