I was doing some work for his former tour bus driver. He told me about a time that he was picking Stevie up at the air port and a bunch of Japanese tourists got on his bus thinking it was for them. Not only did Stevie wait in line to get on his own bus, but he had the driver take the tourists to their hotel. Amazing guy

I don't know that there is *one* that is better than them all. I think it's a genre thing.
He is the GOAT in Blues, Blues Rock, and the like. No one is better. Period.
But there are others who share that title in other genres of music. Eddie van Halen, for one.

    • @HMan2828
      @HMan2828 4 роки тому +4

@randallECTRIC Jimmy was a pioneer of rock and roll, but he wasn't that good on the guitar. He's been elevated to a rock god status deservedly, but it wasn't really for his technical playing... Half the time on stage he was high a kite on acid, and there were plenty of false notes... He definitely had the feel, but Stevie here is so much better technically...

    • @HMan2828
      @HMan2828 4 роки тому +3

@randallECTRIC Objectively, Stevie Ray is a better guitar player than Hendrix was. So are Van Halen, Satriani, Steve Vai, Albert King, and countless others. Doesn't make Hendrix any less of a rock Legend, it's just facts. He's not coming back from the dead to pat you on the back for defending his honor, so just chill out...

I love the innovation of Jimi, the perfection of Gilmore, the creativity of Vai, the technical ability of Bonamassa, the melody of Bratta, the flash of EVH, the instincts and virtuosity of Gales, the abandon of Page, the mastery of Schon, Friedman, and Moore-
but there are 2 players who have achieved complete connection and transcendence with the instrument: Carlos and Stevie.
Soul calls to soul. There are opinions expressed about the players I mentioned, and others- virtuosos all-
but even Carlos would acknowledge that SRV was the greatest ever.
SRV had 4 years of sobriety to show just how profound he was as a human being.
    SRV- G.O.A.T.
Some don't see it that way.
    Sobeit.

Hendrix was Stevie's Idol. He even had one of Hendrix's effects pedals.
SRV's covers of Hendrix songs are amazing. I suggest watching Little Wing from the same show.
    ua-cam.com/video/i6G53BMgugo/v-deo.html
Eric Clapton: "We played on the same bill on his last two gigs. On the first night, I watched his set for about half an hour and then I had to leave because I couldn't handle it!.
I knew enough to know that his playing was just going to get better and better. His set had started, he was like two or three songs in, and I suddenly got this flash that I'd experienced before so many times whenever I'd seen him play, which was that he was like a channel. One of the purest channels I've ever seen, where everything he sang and played flowed straight down from heaven. Almost like one of those mystic Sufi guys with one finger pointing up and one finger down.
That's what it was like to listen to. And I had to leave just to preserve some kind of sanity or confidence in myself."
SRV made the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame question his own musicality.

A watershed moment for me as well , remember driving and hearing the news on the radio that my favorite musician died in a helicopter accident ...telling my passenger to shush , hearing it verified , pulling over at next rest area and sitting in shock as a tear ran down my face ... fighting back tears just remembering it now .. still one of my all time regrets is not seeing him live . He use to play clubs and festivals etc all around me all the time and I kept thinking I’ll catch him next time and many times after that .... I was under age (20 yrs old ) and wanted to see him at a club where I could have a beer or two (to help my social anxiety) .. so let my story be a cautionary tale for you . You never know when the music will just not be there anymore , take those opportunities as they come ... don’t wait for the “perfect “ set of circumstances ... was home this past anniversary of his death and you better believe his music was a playing on my player(s). Rip SRV you are missed now and forever ..
Sorry for being so sappy ...

Thanks for reacting to this song even though it probably had nothing to do with me requesting it a while ago.
I recently took up playing guitar a couple months ago and I have a feeling that even if I quit my job and practiced all day everyday I would probably never achieve this level of playing in my lifetime.
If you have never played guitar before, you have no idea how hard it is to play at this speed and fret every string in just the right spot so you don't get a buzzing sound or a flat sound if one of your other fingers bumps against the one you are playing. All that is just for the left hand. The right hand still has to pick the correct string at exactly the same time the left hand is fretting it.
Much respect to anyone that has put in the time and effort to play like this.
Stevie was the best. No question. R.I.P.

Great reaction. You hit on a couple things that show how perceptive you are. The strength of his hands. Most people play between 9 and 11 gauge strings. Stevie regularly played with 13 gauge. Also you talked about his improvisation. You can listen to Stevie play the same song in 3 different places on consecutive nights and never hear the songs exactly alike. He draws from the crowds. Early in this video he was about to step to the mic to start singing. and changed his mind and continued his solo. Best ever. BB King, Clapton and others would agree. RIP Stevie.

Young lady. I know you like metal. I am a guitarist and I played in a heavy metal band. Welcome to rock and blues, mixed. I can assure you of this....I felt I could play as well as many know guitarists. Well......all I needed to do when I thought I was getting good...is watch SRV. Than I knew I was not as good as I thought. The man was a beast with a guitar. Many of the best recognized him as one of the top two or three ever....perhaps the best. I love the blues connection. Thanks I have seen him play often but each time is easy to watch. Amazing.

I never got to see him live (I was 12 when he died) but I'm trying to imagine the vibe in the front row and the volume coming off the stage. It's one thing to hear a great player but to be in the same room with one is another thing entirely. SRV once had a dream that Hendrix was trying to teach him chords and he knew what the chords were in his sleep but when he woke up, he'd forgotten them all.

And may I say you have such a beautiful energy and soul yourself. I can imagine you in the 60’s.
I love Dave Gilmore as well. I life live with so much gratitude. Gratitude that I’ve been able to see so many amazing bands including Stevie and Pink Floyd.
They both transport us to places other than where we are.
There is a new soul from another time that is so amazing and we are so so blessed to have. She incapsulates you with her emotional connection.

Great genuine reaction! The "bodybuilder of fingers" is even more true when you realise he played mostly with 0.13 gauge strings, and occasionally up to 0.17 gauge, (closer to fencing wire some might say). And he could bend a full note with them. Thats why his tone and depth was so full. By comparison, and not detracting from them, Clapton and Page played 0.08 gauge. SRV is IMO the best of all time. Some lights burn bright but short. Maybe it's better they never get old, but he is sorely missed. RIP.

Sure he's one of the best of all time, but I'm not a huge Texas blue's shuffle music lover. I saw SRV once live in Dallas and he was imo the greatest electric player I've ever seen but his music and songs are not the best. The Beatles, Zeppelin and Floyd, apples to oranges I know but their music is the best.

Stevie was a master of his craft, very hard to come close! His guitar playing is next level, so much feel & emotion packed into his style of blues! Plus the guy could sing!
Also his fingers were very strong, he used 13 gauge strings at standard pitch, crazy! Though I didn’t really get into him too much, one can not take anything away from his playing or his contributions to blues guitar! A true legend! R.I.P. 🎸🔥

I think you'd really love SRV's song "Life Without You". It's very tender, and the magic he does on his guitar (or geetar, as you call it ;) is absolutely haunting.

Different guitar styles create so many different lists for me. WHO is my favorite? What style. Gilmore's? Trower's? Page's? Hendrix's? Vaughn's? I LOVE them all and could name about 2 dozen more.
The most often asked question about Vaughn is a comparison between him and Hendrix, who was better. I answer that one this way. Hendrix wrote the songs Vaughn played them better than anyone but him, sometimes better than him SO Vaughn ended up being better BUT give Jimi an extra decade of life and guitar playing that Vaughn got and who knows.
