  • I've always known the name Stevie Ray Vaughan because of his incredible skill at the guitar. Today, however, I'm hearing his vocals for the first time. Here he's performing Pride and Joy with Double Trouble LIVE at Montreux.

When I saw him open for Dire Straits in 85 he walked on stage and plugged in his guitar. Didn't say a word, but absolutely killed it for about an hour straight. Unplugged his guitar and walked off. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo in Toronto 1983. It's killer. In fact, the whole live performance is one of the best blues/rock live performances ever recorded. Stevie was on fire and channeling whatever you want to call it. It was an amazing live tour de force from a virtuoso in his prime and nailing it.

Really enjoyed your appreciation for SRV! Living in Austin i was fortunate to see him live several times back in the day. I worked in the concert business for 23 years, and was fortunate to meet him backstage at Prince's Purple Rain tour show in Austin in 1985. He was very gracious. SRV fans would definitely recommend you checking his performances of "Voodoo Child" and " Tightrope" from the Austin City Limits show in 1989, and "Texas Flood" live from El Mocambo. Again, enjoyed your reaction!!

    • @Benevolar

SRV was so connected to both his instruments that I don't think he makes conscious decisions, it just flows out of him. That's what makes him so good, he just emotes, and the audience feels it.

Notwithstanding this is a singing analysis, every time SRV stepped up on stage, it was an absolute master class in playing with emotion and warmth. He was a channel of some sort and just never dried up. It is so natural to tap into the whole emotional experience with SRV as opposed to just pure listening.

  • @Benevolar
    @Benevolar Рік тому +1

SRV (rip) had the greatest gravely nasty voice ever! His legendary guitar skills almost eclipsed his nasty gravely voice! As a side note, I'm still shocked at how nasty he got his guitar to sound! Like from string gages to two tube screamer pedals, I can't fathom how the hell he got that guitar sound!!!! Even the Vocalyst had to listen to the solo twice in full!
If anything, I'd appreciate how to get that crazy gravely voice without stripping my voice coils out and sounding like Miles Davis for the rest of my life! Pweeze, with sugar on top? H O W ? ? ?

What you're getting during that guitar solo is the fact that Stevie was able to speak thru the instrument and, when he did, he had so much to say... and he did it in a way that no one, before him or since, had ever done. Listen to the instrumental, "Riviera Paradise" and you'll hear/see what I mean.

Hi! OMG I can’t begin to explain how happy it makes me to watch your reaction to my pal, Stevie. I don’t know if you’re aware, but he was self taught ( with an assist from his big brother, Jimmie Vaughan) and could not read music at all. He flunked Music Theory… everything was from listening, watching, and practice. For a time he thought one guitar was playing both lead and rhythm, so that’s how he taught himself to play. It took him a while to confident in his singing voice and worked really hard on it. I can’t help but believe that he is up in Heaven watching every reaction to his work and being so thrilled to hear vocalists making such positive and in depth remarks about his vocals. Stevie was such a kind, gentle man who was as humble as he was talented. I’m so excited to watch you fall in love him! If you thought this vocal was something special, check out this deep Blues tune with Stevie Ray and a guest performance by his friend and fellow Texas Bluesman, Johnny Copeland. So good. Thank you for your kind words about Stevie❤Donna G

Let us also not forget that Tommy and Chris were also phenomenal -but they were always in Stevie’s shadow because he was so damn good! But one can imagine that he wasn’t going to let just anybody play in his rhythm section. They were integral to his music and his sound, and are deserving of the accolades that they never really got
There will NEVER be another like SRV…

80's shredder was neoclassical minor chord arpeggios. You'd be surprised how you can incorportate such arpegios skipping notes, with some tasteful linear scales for a few notes, to create some wonderful emotional movement. So long live crazy (super hard) note skipping arpeggios! Think how you can combine Tony Macalpine with SRV!!!! OMG!!!

I always analyze his god level guitars but could never do his singing. Another amazing piece from him is Tin Pan Alley. Both from singing and guitar. Specifically the live version at Montreux Jazz Festival with Johnny Copeland.

I'm always happy to hear someone who is coming from one genre and really enjoying something from a very different genre (in this case you - a formally-trained vocalist - enjoying some VERY informal blues). I am not a vocalist so your analysis really taught me a lot about Stevie that I never really appreciated before. Thank you!

Glad you mentioned his cool and aura. I had the honor of seeing him live and from the moment he strapped on his guitar, you could feel that is where he was meant to be. On stage, making his guitar roar and wail and cry. There are some musicians who are truly one with their instrument and take it to a much higher level. SRV is a perfect example. His guitar was the extension of his soul. He didn't play it. He felt it, lived it. I think the term legendary is overused...but if the boot fits, baby...SRV deserves it.

I never got to see Stevie Ray play in person, the televised Austin City Limits show on PBS in 1989 was the last time I would see him perform before his death a year later. In my 64 years I have seen many great musicians pass to the other side, but the loss of SRV is the only one that still makes me cry. In 2017 I happened to be in the Dallas area so I visited his grave at Laurel Land Cemetery...

Thank you for covering one my all-time favorite live SRV performances! I love his singing voice and I think matches perfectly with his style of guitar playing: clear, confident, very sexy and a little gritty.😉

You seemed a bit speechless more than a time or two, SRV will do that to ya. I saw him twice, he was a flawless force of nature both times, the coolest guy on the planet. And had an insanely cool voice too, so I was so glad to hear you provide some insights on Stevie's voice. What's funny is when he was forming this band, people who knew him were like "Who's gonna sing?" Because none of the had any idea Stevie could sing like that. But Stevie was like "I am." So that voice seemed to just come out of nowhere, a full-fledged singing, blues power-house.

The funny thing about some of these reactions from experts is, I wonder if a "natural singer" like SRV has any idea what you are talking about...but I love the commentary!

You picked a wonderful video to be able to highlight his vocals, and the full story behind this particular night is very cool. He and the band were the very first unsigned act to play at the montreuax festival in Europe, and all of the acts prior to them (according to the drummer Chris Layton) were acoustic bands and played at lower volumes. The band came out (with Stevie smoking a cigarette) and proceeded to blast the audience with their music. This was the second song of the set (the first with vocals) and at the end of their roughly 45 minute set, they were actually booed off the stage. However, from this performance, David Bowie asked Stevie to record on his song Let’s Dance and musician Jackson Browne offered the band free time at his personal studio. Over about 2 days, the band recorded what would go on to be the landmark Texas Flood album and the rest is history.

Love your reactions! Here's one that you'll appreciate I think. His singing is on point because he just has the voice to go with the music he plays. Also, the guitar in this one is top notch, Stevie Ray Vaughan - Texas Flood (Live at the El Mocambo). Enjoy! Have a great day!

Stevie Ray...the patron saint of Texas. I listen 95% to hard rock/metal....but gotta have my Stevie Ray Vaughan. I had the pleasure of seeing him live back in 1984. A good song of his to react to might be "Life by the Drop"...simple blues guitar, nothing fancy, but vocally....dripping with emotion. It's a song a friend of his actually wrote about Stevie and their friendship. Very touching.

Believe it or not he didn't think he was that good of a singer 😮 which is so crazy...he was a very unpretentous person for being such a legend and I saw him live shortly before he passed away with BB King who was his opening act and one of his mentors...he was mesmorizing to watch play live and something I will never forget...I am older and was in my mid 20's when I saw him and am saddened that we lost such an amazing force of nature in him that we will never see again....❤

One of the best comments I've seen on SRV is "If you don't play guitar, he makes you want to learn. If you play guitar, he makes you want to put it down." He was at his peak here.
