A couple years ago, I stopped listening to guys like Gary Vee and the other people peddling "hustle porn". I started sleeping more, got a few more hobbies, and started saying no to a lot more everything. I'm 10X happier and still productive.

It's rare that we are told to slow down and take care of ourselves under capitalism. Our worth has been reduced to our productivity. There have been times where I felt like a shell of a person because work was the only thing I was doing. This was relatable... especially in the youtube space, it always feels like if you are not working on the next video, you are falling behind. The presentation of this is lovely.

It is sad but even here in the Philippines, being busy is always greatly glorified. If one is not bowed down on his desk, he is seen as lazy. :-(
Now that almost all people are working from home, we are expected to be online almost our entire waking moments. If you set down your phone and didn't reply to a message, you are deemed inefficient. :-(
I am experiencing what I call as FOMO but not fear of missing out. FOMO as in fear of messaging online. Fear of receiving another work when I am still not done with the previously given task. For the longest time, I want to quit social media. I've already done it once but my co-workers forced me back because I am expected to always be ready to receive the task they are going to give even if it's ten in the evening. It is very sad.

    • @CKSPACE

Oh man, you might want to check out the book "Joy of missing out" by Tonya Dalton. Hope that can help!

@@CKSPACE what I like about not always in contact with other people is that we can have something relevant to talk about when we decide to meet up. It gets me excited to listen to what other people are up to and to tell them what I am up to. Meet ups become more meaningful and fun as opposed to seeing and talking to them almost everyday. As for work, my only complain is that people in my workplace are somewhat expecting me to be on Facebook and Messenger app even if it's time for me to sleep. Sometimes I would open my messenger app in the morning to find a task that was sent the night before while I am asleep. It bothers me a lot that my co-workers just shove workloads in the evening when we are supposed to be resting. And when I don't respond right away or complain, they see me as "inefficient" or I "complain a lot."

I'm actually not working at all and I'm procrastinating on my studies, but this still applies to me. While I realize I should study, when I can't, I think that I have to be busy, so I watch UA-cam videos endlessly till the end of the day. Doing nothing would give me some time to think why I'm not studying, but I'm too busy watching YT videos to do that. In reality I'm not busy, I'm slacking, but just as much work can be a distraction, anything can. It's not good to numb the pain of dissatisfaction, because only when you realize your situation can you change it. To do what you love you have to leave time for it, so stop doing anything irrelevant. Thanks Cheng! :)

This video is scripted so well. We all experience these things in our life and think that it's okay because everyone around us is doing the same thing and busy trying to win the race. Even if we want to slow down, there is a fear of missing out on so many things and that can sometimes break us and we don't even realize. Great Video👍

True story; great work visualising it so well! The narrative is captivating! But sometimes I think people expect too much from themselves, giving themselves and their tasks too much importance. Once I missed a deadline for a visa application, what made me feel stressed, and the reaction from the doctor who was supposed to fly to work as a consultant was 'so what?! Come on, please, no one is gonna die.' Even so, everything worked it in the end, I think she was right :)

This hit so close to home. I am attending an art school right now and the glamorising of toxic work culture is so normalized......it's pure insanity. We literally get told by professors that we should be doing work all the time and that sleep is overrated because there is always a project to be finished.
I hate this so much. This is not what I wanted, but it is what I love doing so its okay? But according to my professors I am never busy enough :)

I'm currently suffering from burnout which sounds ridiculous at 23.. but seeing what triggered the depression and how I had to practically force myself to rest makes it different from the usual depression. ... how am I supposed to enter work life already struggling?
I feel like I just don't fit into this system where our value is attached to how much we work. This video hits home in that sense. And it's nice to know there are people all over the world opening their eyes to the craziness we've been conditioned to believe.

You’re one of my favorite UA-camrs! Sadly this video is representing my life as a freelancer. For 4 years working without a day off, I’m TIRED! And every time I promise myself that the next year I’ll give myself a break, I just feel guilty to say no to more work, because I’m onto my FIRE plan. But damn I’m tired… I miss out on life, friends, family, enjoyment, exercising…

I forget which famous person said it, I think it was Emerson or Thoreau, but I'm reminded of the (probably paraphrased) quote "Its not whether one is busy, but what one is busy about." We've turned being busy/productive into a cultural imperative and its destroying us.

this might not be the best video idea in terms of attracting views, but i would love to see a video on achieving minimalism in singapore - i feel like our little city is just so cluttered and full of everything, whether you're living in a flat or walking in the park; there's so much visual and aural clutter, it's extremely overwhelming and i don't always feel actually disconnected or restful.
