I get that these lenses are new and all but they're really not that revolutionary. We've already had tons of APSC lens options for Sony for ages. The 15mm f1.4 is w/e since you've got the Sigma 16mm f1.4. The new 10-20 is also kind of meh, especially at f4, because you've already got the Tamron 11-20 f2.8 available. If the prices you mentioned are final I'd say these Sony lenses are nothing special, maybe the 11mm f1.8 is a bit different, but still. It's definitely not like they're the thing that's gonna "save" APSC, because it doesn't need saving. Regardless of what people online may say APSC is, and will continue being a perfectly usable platform for A LOT of people, especially Sony APSC.

I agree with you on this. Though Im super glad Sony is giving us the Signal, that apsc will still be further supported in future, cause I wasnt sure about that in the past.
Sony 10-20 180g instead of 350g for the Tamron is pretty impressive, 10 instead of 11mm is pretty interesting too, but I need tht f2.8 because with the Tamron you could defintly do astro, where as I wouldnt say f4 would be enough for astro. The 11mm 1.8 is interesting too, but the Samyang 12mm is half the price, same goes for the Sigma 16mm 1.4 which is half of the price of the Sigma 16mm, though the Sony weighs half of the Sigma.
My conclusion: In terms of size and weight compared to the incredible performance (sharpness and focusbreathing) these lenses are defintly quite revolutionary.
But for price/performance these are not at all interesting unless they signifcantly drop in price.

You don't need 300 different lenses and 50 different cameras. Do some research, get what you want then go out and get results. Before you know it, success will be there waiting for you to take.

I get that this is a review for new Sony lenses, and it’s great that they’re starting to invest in APS-C more, but it sounds like you’re not aware of just how broadly Fujifilm has covered APS-C cameras and lenses for years now, in a professional way. So when you talk about APS-C image quality not being as good as full frame, that may apply to Sony but it’s a different story with Fujifilm. It just feels funny to have been shooting Fuji for 7 years now and all of a sudden the UA-camrs are like “wow APS-C!” once Sony does 1/5 of the work Fuji’s been doing the whole time.

This is the best advice for 95% of creators or regular consumers. Years back I've had A6500 with several lenses along with one of those first smaller zhiyun crane gimbals and that was the best travel setup. Spent a ton of cash to upgrade to full frame and on gmaster lenses and it became so cumbersome to shoot and travel with. Sometimes I just don't feel like using it because its too big to carry.

95% of creators.....no you got that wrong. I would recommend crop/small camera systems to noobies only. Literally noobies. It's NOT worth doing that small camera for creators that will be learning rather quickly. It's better to get a bigger toolbox when you are invested in creating. The learning curve will catch up to the bigger better features and capabilities.

Good video Matti! I think it's a valid idea and there are good clear advantages of APSC and you had some good points but you don't need to force every single point by not sticking with apples vs apples. For example when you showed the size difference and you compared the prices you put the f2.8 Canon zoom in the argument. It would be more apples to apples to bring the f4 zoom which is way way cheaper. And a few other points which seems a little forced or exaggerated. But the main idea is totally right and valid. I'm using 2 Canon M6 mk2s and a bunch of EF-M lenses in parallel with all my full frame gear for all the reasons you also presented.

  • @joshreimer5090
    @joshreimer5090 2 роки тому +1

I'd love to see you do a comparison vid between these new lenses on APS-C and a similar full-frame setup with equivalent value/performance lenses - showing video and photo quality, and actually pointing out differences in quality of the video/photo (even if nobody would notice without zooming in, or looking really closely) would be super cool to see what the cost and size difference actually does for quality of video/photo. Personally, I shoot night sky/landscape scenes with my a6000 and Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and I chose this setup due to price/performance ratio and based on the fact that I don't make money doing this - it's just a hobby for me.

  • @brittneysworld

I would LOVE to see Sony make a full frame lens that’s something along the lines of 16-70mm f2.8 Lens. There’s so many 24-70 but I usually find that 24 is just a smidge too tight to vlog handheld (maybe it’s because I’m 5’2”…) but I’d love to get a huge zoom range with a wide aperture!

@@Moresco24 Definitely! There's nothing inherently magic about full-frame. Some of the most popular cinema cameras are super 35, which is pretty much identical in size to APSC (eg, Blackmagic Ursa, RED Komodo, etc.). The only thing to be aware of among *consumer* APSC cameras is that they often only shoot 8-bit video, which doesn't handle LOG formats or heavy color grading well. In my opinion, your sensor size has nothing to do with whether it can be used professionally -- what's relevant is, do you have a consumer camera or a professional camera? The aforementioned Ursa and Komodo cameras are both ~$6k USD, both crop frame, and both professional.
Sony just came out with the FX30 (basically an APSC FX3) and for $1,600 USD it's a fantastic value; also definitely suitable for professional production environments. Sorry for the long reply but hopefully this is helpful lol

I agree with you in almost every way about the full frame versus crop sensors except I believe the R7 with it's 32 megapixel sensor and the af modes of the R3 is gonna give me a lot more detail and resolution and higher quality crop-able images than my R6 with 20 megapixels. Often we're not comparing a full frame and a crop sensor camera with the same number of megapixels and other features that affect the number of keepers and image quality like low pass filters, frames per second, and pre-capture.

I used canon and then Sony Super 35 sensors for years, then moved to a BMPCC 4K (and I forget I'm filming MFT). I've invested way more in lenses than bodies over the past couple of years and they make the image more than the camera. Next camera I get will be a fuly fledged cine cam (Like an URSA Mini Pro) and it too will be s35.
The much sort after full frame, shallow DOF look (seen all too often on youtube!) isn't actually a cinematic look (if you study how Hollywood etc film makers work). It has it's place, but it's not the be all end all - depth and separation is more important than short DOF . I can get the dreamy short DOF look with nice fast glass on my BMPCC 4K but most of the time I don't opt for it anyway.
For vlogging, S35 is more than enough - the thing that puts me off the sonys that have this s35 sensor (imcludg my own) is the shutter lag.

When you compare Sonys APS-C and +30mpix FF bodies, the image quality isn't that far off. It's just time for a new generation APS-C sensor at Sony. By the way 1.6x ist the Canon APS-C crop, Sony has a real APS-C with 1.5x. :)

@@Benjamin_Jehne people say the image isn't that far off untill you need to produce a very demanding and creative visual with color accuracy with existing marketing campaigns (for example). Smaller pixel sensors is ok if that's all you got but choosing crop over full-frame...thats a negative for me. Eyes need to be trained on what to look for (and I don't just mean technical stuff). I am not choosing the crop sensor camera in this video over something like my Nikon z7ii. It's idiotic. Aps-c should just be compared to other aps-c maybe micro four thirds. Some photographers are image quality over portability. I would also socratically challenge the notion that a certain camera in the great photographers hand is fine, and I would argue why not let the great photographer also have a great camera sensor. Example a great driver will drive a Geo Prism like it has never been driven before but that's the Geo Prism being maxed out at a lower limit of performance, that is not the driver performing at HIS ultimate limit. Now give that same great driver the best car and see what his ultimate is. Tools should not be the limit. They should magnifier. When people watch a legendary drift racer do his thung. They are enjoying the performance and not the specs. Technical focus is paradoxically irrelevant to the appreciation of the end result. Usually the end result is judged on its own. So shouldn't care if it's 1.5x or 1.6x unless (hence the paradox) it doesn't matter unless a specific measured and planned shot is need. Technical details fall inline more with the planning of a shot due to whatever technical limits are there, but using specs as a way of validating end result impact.

I feel like third party lens manufacturers make better alternatives to these lenses and some for less even (Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8, the legendary Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and I believe Samyang or Rokinon makes a wide aperture 12mm). But then you can grab something like an Sony A7C that’s full frame but with the size of an APS-C body with the very reasonably priced and lightweight f/2.8 zoom pairs from Tamron and now Sigma with their recent release of the 16-28mm f/2.8 to pair with their 28-70mm f2.8. If Sony makes(and I’m keeping my fingers crossed here) a APSC camera that has 4k 24/30/60 with 10 bit, a new crop sensor, fully articulating touch screen and included the new menu these lenses would be game changing for sure
