I met the actor that played the Soup Nazi , Larry Thomas. A local restaurant had a soup making contest called The Souper Bowl. 12 area restaurants participated and there were a few bands playing. Larry Thomas was the head judge for the contest. He had 8x10 photos with him and for $10 he would sign it for you. He was super nice , friendly and funny. He's a great guy and the contest was a good time.
I love how the cashier takes the soup back and returns his money in one motion..
The actor playing the soup nazi improvised the “no soup for you” line. The script said something like “you don’t get any soup.” His improvised line is much better.
Often times the best lines in movies are the ad libbed lines such as "I'm walkin' here!" or "We're gonna need a bigger boat."
I’ve been to the Soup Nazi when I used to work on the west side in the city. I was hysterical when I saw it on Seinfeld, not many NYers knew he was based on a real person.
Before this episode aired, a friend of mine tried to convince me to stand in a line that stretched down a city block to wait for a bowl of soup. I was told to bring exact change. I wouldn't hear of it. Literally, NYC office workers would stand in the cold for a serving of takeaway soup.
A year later, Seinfeld does the "Soup Nazi" episode. I was rolling on the floor with laughter and my friend was gobsmacked. It was true. It was all true.
This is a real guy…in NY. Soup Nazi is based on a real restaurant in NY

During the end credits, Newman was telling Jerry that the Soup Nazi was giving away whatever he had left and shutting down. He was rushing home to get a pot for the soup, after which Jerry rushes to get some of that soup before Newman did.
Our local radio station sports show here in central Arkansas went to New Orleans for a University of Arkansas football game. While there they went to Cafe du Monde for beignets and coffee and when they asked this Asian lady for more sugar on their beignets she yelled "no more sugar for you". For months afterwards they talked about the sugar Nazi at Cafe du Monde! It was hilarious!
I read a book about Seinfeld, and it said they were surprised when it became so popular worldwide, having believed it was just "too New York" to be relatable outside the US.
After this episode, the word was used for anyone who rigidly adhered to a set of rules, ie "Grammar Nazi," etc.
Grammar Nazi had documented use in 1990. That’s 5 years before the soup Nazi.

Thank you, James. I'm a lifelong "word nerd" so phraseology, idioms, etc. fascinate me. Just the other day I looked up the origins of the expression "you sly boots." It goes back to 1699! Wow.

It originally referred to the lowest ranking soldier in a troop, whose job was to polish the officers' boots. Often, they were derided as being devious and opportunistic.
But over time, it evolved from being an insult to an affectionate endearment, which is how I used it. This happens a lot. Do you know "awful" started out as a compliment? It meant so impressive that it "filled one with awe"! That happens a lot.
There was a pizza parlor in Coney Island, Brooklyn (Tatone's, I think) who was a pizza Nazi. He would have a certain amount of ingredients, and when he was finished, he threw everyone else out.
A fire chief once walked to the front of the line, after 16 hours of fighting a huge blaze, and asked if they get a few pizzas to go. The owner said "get in line, I have customers". Another time, just after threw everyone out, a pregnant woman started knocking on the door, trying to get in. Some friends of mine where there and they were afraid to even look at her. I was there when a teenager asked for extra sauce. He picked up the pot is and said "Do you want the whole fucking pot"!
These are just a few of the stories I heard from friends who grew up in the neighborhood.

I occasionally make jambalaya for dinner, and when It’s ready, I group text the entire household the Newman jambalaya meme. Every time…. While Soup Nazi is one of the most favorite episodes, I think “The Contest” has it beat. Would love to see you react to that!
The phrases: "Yada, yada", & "Not that there's anything wrong w/ that"(in reference to same-sex relationships) were also iconic Seinfeld verbal memes.
And it's not you it's me.
Every time my wife and I eat out and see jambalaya on a menu, we look at each other and say, "jambaaaayyyaaa" just like Newman.
This episode inspired me to learn to make jambalaya, and jollof rice and paella.

According to the special features on the Seinfeld DVDs, the Soup Nazi is based on a real person in NYC who had a soup place. He was NOT amused when he saw the show.
Just to clarify, his family had been persecuted by the Third Reich during WW2, so being called a Nazi, even in a facetious context, was offensive.

My sister met the actor who played the soup Nazi @ our local grocery store. He was of course promoting a companies soup line! She got a video w/ him saying ‘No Soup For You!’
Classic! I went to the real soup guy about 15 yrs ago. He was only open during the week for like 3 hrs. Put the soup in a brown bag and they put a banana or an orange and bread I think. He was quiet and no tantrums at least not on me and my GF lol
My favorite episode was when George was yelling, "I was in the pool! I was in the pool!!"

"Like a frightened turtle" is one of the best lines from the show. Also, Kramer saying, "Look away, I am hideous" is another great one.

If you're not familiar (I haven't read all the comments, so someone might have mentioned it) the Soup Nazi is based on a real person named Ali Yeganeh. He's Iranian, and an absolute asshole lunatic, but evidently his soup really was/is that good. He was furious about this episode and its popularity, but he's still around as far as I know.
In a DVD extra about this episode, the actor who played the Soup Nazi, Larry Thomas, didn't realize at first that his character was based on a real person. He claims he based the accent on the way Omar Sharif sounded in the film "Lawrence of Arabia".
You'd like the Seinfeld bloopers too. Season 3 and later are the best ones.

I remember in some episode, Kramer mentioned that he was supposed to be Argentinean in the Seinfeld series.
The "Soup Nazi" was based on the owner of an actual place in New York City called "Soup Nutsy", run by a grumpy immigrant (from Eastern Europe I think?). He wasn't happy when he found out the character was based on him, but apparently he is rarely happy anyway.
I agree, it really has to be the most famous line from the show.
Probably, but there are so many quotables from this series. "Master of your domain", "sponge-worthy", "Take the pen!" come to mind.

Sitcoms that are actually funny..as in laugh out loud funny, are RARE. This one was rare. I never tire of it especially when I need a laugh. I can count on it... Great concept, great cast, great writing....great show...

There is a place called The Soup Nutsy in Arlington Virginia in Crystal City, across from the Pentagon. I haven't been there in decades but they sold the best soups and salads there. Not sure if it was affiliated with this or not but it always reminded me of one or the other.
The all-time classic. I've still never had Mulligatawny soup ;)
I've heard it's VERY spicy, so my wimpy palate definitely couldn't take the heat. There's a terrific Indian buffet near me, and I can only eat the items rated with one 🔥 on their menu.

Luckily, that Indian buffet place survived the pandemic; a lot of my other favorites did not. The only places in town that served authentic poutine, bubble tea, Italian ices with real chunks of fruit 🍓🍑.....all gone.

What is really funny is that The Soup Nazi was a real place in NYC and when they interviewed him and asked him why he was so strict he said cause there are alot of people who go to his shop for soup during lunch and if the line isn't moving fast enough he'll lose customers.

The man really had a storefront where he sold his soup. My college boyfriend and I went to the city and got in line. The soup was tasty and there was bread , an apple and chocolate in the plain paper bag.
LOL! I grew up in Hillside, NJ ... I went to High School up the road from M&Ms.
If you ever order a cheesesteak in Philly you can expect a similar experience. You had better know exactly what you want and exactly how to say it (Philly has its own cheesesteak slang) before you even think about getting in line.

You missed one of the funniest parts during the closing credits when Jerry and Newman are panicked and scrambling to get the last bits of soup as the soup stand is closing. 😂
I don't know whether anyone has mentioned it below, but the real Soup Nazi, Albert Yeganeh, opened up some other stores. They were called "The Original Soupman". I don't know how many there were, but one was in Pittsburgh and I had a chance to sample a few of the soups, the most memorable being the Italian sausage soup. It was very good, but I wouldn't make a habit of buying it at the listed price. Also, the lines were too long. I can't remember how long the store lasted, but I think it was gone after less than a year. The brand also may have had some packaged soups in grocery stores, as I remember.
George Costanza is also an architect. Well . . .
This is the kind of show where the guest stars and non-main characters were what made the show.

There was an "Original Soupman" franchise along the Embarcadero in San Francisco. It was a chain of soup restaurants started by the real "Soup Nazi," Al Yeganeh. I always wanted to try his soups, so I went in and bought one. It was VERY good. So, I went back several times trying different soups. They were all very good. Anytime I was in the city, I would stop there for lunch. Unfortunately, it closed its doors a few months after I discovered it. It was strange that I liked the soups so much because I really don't enjoy soup. I don't know if it was a psychosomatic response to the Seinfeld episode, but I did find that they really were extremely tasty.
The Elaine "Dance" scene is, in my opinion, the funniest moment in American TV history.

There was a small Italian restaurant here in my city. The owner was always rude and short with customers but his wife was a great cook and kind. If you didn't know the situation you'd never go back

The real Soup Nazi Ali "Al" Yeganeh was offended by his portrayal in this Seinfeld episode. However it didn't seem to bother him when he started a chain of restaurants based on the success of the episode.
The guy this is based on (who has no mustache) had a line of soups sold in stores across the country. They used to make a cheddar broccoli and I have to say it was the best cheddar broccoli soup I have ever had in my life. I can see why people got so excited for the stuff.
Just because something is very good or tasty, it doesn't mean you can be jerk to customers... but as someone said, new yorkers are cold and rude

Most famous line, not that there is anything wrong with it
1. It figures of all the people the Soup Nazi liked, it would be Kramer lol
2. The restaurant is loosely modeled after an actual restaurant here in New York City called The Original Soupman. I've eaten there a few times and the soup is really good although the people there are much nicer and not temperamental like on the show. The Soup Nazi character I think is loosely based on the founder who supposedly didn't originally like the portrayal on the show despite it being one of the most loved episodes of the series.
I remember the soup nazi. the real guy not the show actor. A tiny spot in NY on 54th street in the city. Not as extreme as the show but you had to know what you wanted. it was really good soup and the bread was free. I was shocked to see him depicted on the show. Him and the berlin sausage guy are people that always had long lines. their food was that good.
I once ordered soup from the real one. I worked in Manhattan.

supposedly the soup nazi was based upon a real person. seinfeld had a lot of great episoides. there was the lady who wore a bra as a shirt, george's dad and kramer invent the "man-bra" and there's "newman" the mailman, kramer's friend and seinfeld's arch enemy who appears sporadically throughout the series. the episode where seinfeld discovers his present girlfriend was rejected by newman in the past is hilarioius.
one of the things i liked so much about the show is how they reference past shows in new episodes. example: they must've referenced the soup nazi in 10 different episodes. the show was very creative and refreshing. along with the "dick van dyke show" from the 60s and the "jack benny show" of the 50s its one of the best american tv comedy shows ever!
seinfeld's last episode was a two parter where MANY of the characters who appeared on the show throughout the series returned and were witnesses in court against seinfeld, george, elaine and kramer. they testified how the four ruined their lives. its a classic. but it wouldn't make much sense unless you were familiar with the characters from the past shows.
when shows were good, when shows were funny, when no narratives were pushed. miss it.

Seinfeld was my favorite until It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Still a strong second though. Number three is WAY down the list. Those shows are in the stratosphere. League of their own.
