For a show to have two all time characters like Frank and George Costanza at once was amazing.

R.I.P. Jerry Stiller. I first saw him on TV, in the 60's when he would perform comedy routines with his wife (Anne Meara), as Stiller and Meara. A real master of comedic timing.

Jerry Stiller and Estelle Harris in Seinfeld--some of the best casting ever. Not only based on their physical appearance were they believable as George's parents, but their characters' personalities made you understand why George was the way he was!

Oh yeah, that show and cast was perfection. That last scene with Frank and Elaine is part of the bloopers (which you also must see) because Julia couldn’t get through multiple takes without laughing. It was great when any of them lost it, but especially Julia.

  • @NewYork81983

You have to watch the bloopers for that last scene between Frank and Elaine. It takes probably at least 10 takes where she cannot stop laughing at how funny he is and it's amazing they ever got a take they could use

I love the fact that the original idea was for estelle to be loud and frank to be the complete opposite, just a soft-spoken mild-mannered man, until one take where estelle yelled at him and jerry stiller responded by yelling even louder and suddenly frank costanza was born. As someone who's been writing comedy series for years hoping to get one done someday this is still my favorite example of letting the actors do their thing and shape their own characters, which as a writer, your ego sometimes fights very hard against, so I don't take this man's lesson lightly.

I'm 38, and I become George more and more with each passing day. I think it's because my parents absolutely argued and bickered exactly like George's. Also at 7:26 this was an actual mistake. Jerry Stiller actually forgot his line, and they left it in because it was funnier than what they wrote. He often had trouble remembering his lines, but the quirk added to his character so they often left the mistakes in. I'm sure you're aware since you lived here, but this was the biggest sitcom ever in the U.S. Even to this day, nothing comes close. It's strange, but I would have thought this show would have really struck a chord with British and Australian audiences. Also, watch the outtakes of that last scene. It took FOREVER because they could not stop laughing.

  • @blakerh

Here in the U.S., it just endlessly plays on reruns. They must have made a billion dollars in syndication. And every time I think I couldn't possibly watch an episode again; I find myself watching it. It's like comic relief comfort food. Best sitcom ever made.

While making a "Festivus" toast at the dinner table, Frank informed the assembled guests that it was, first & foremost, & among other things, a tradition for the "airing of grievances". What a festive occasion !

  • @truckinfool3550
    @truckinfool3550 8 місяців тому +1

Jerry Stiller sometimes had trouble remembering his lines, causing some pauses as he searched his mind for the next word, and it turned out brilliantly. He also had a hard time saying Del Boca Vista, many outtakes of him flubbing it.

"The Conversion" When George wanted to convert to the Latvian Orthodox Church because a young woman to whom he was attracted was a member. Later, when that same woman started stalking Kramer, he went to the Latvian priest for advice, & was told that he (Kramer) had "the Kavorka", the "lure of the animal", & was told how to remedy the situation. It involved, among other things, the wearing of cloves of garlic around his neck ( in a scene reminiscent of the old original "Wolfman" movie, where the Lon Chaney, Jr. character seeks advice from the old gypsy woman on how to avoid turning into a werewolf). Too funny.

One of those odd shows which I think the lead character (Jerry) is more replaceable then the co-stars. I could never see anybody replace Kramer, George, Frank et al. Cheers & Seinfeld gave me 16 great years of true sitcom genius growing up. I think I've seen my favorite episode "The Contest" at least 5 times. Great show.

Seinfeld was just hilarious all the way around! It is obvious they had so much fun doing that in front of a studio audience. The series ran while I was going thru my second childhood and working my dream job - we all talked about it the next day (and beyond). Jason Alexander actually had a semi-recurring role on Young Sheldon as the High School drama teacher in East Texas, and is rather convincing.

Have you guys done any of Larry David's show, "Curb Your Enthusiasm"? He was the mastermind behind Seinfeld. He was the head writer and executive producer for the first seven years. I like Curb better. It is a semi-fictionalized version of his own life after "semi-retirement". very similar humor but a bit more expanded since it was on HBO and not regular tv.

2:37 some context is needed for this joke. George Steinbrenner(then owner of the Yankees) was played by Larry David. He thought George, Frank's son had passed away and was delivering the tragic news to his parents. While Mrs. Costanza was wheeping, Frank was more upset about an ill advised trade that Yankees made a few years ago. The joke being that Frank cared more about the Yankees than his own son.

There’s nothing quite like the writing in this show. I feel like you’d never have dialogue written now where someone just stops half way through a rant and says they lost their train of thought.
Although, there are enough bloopers of stuff like from this that maybe Stiller actually just forgot, played it in character and it was better than if he’d gotten the line out. 😂

Jerry Stiller is the only one in the cast who could flat out forget his lines and they don't even do another take. 🤣🤣🤣 Amazing show. Rewatched all of it not too long ago. A little awkward at the beginning, but man..... I'm so lucky to have grown up in the time I did. We had The Simpsons AND Seinfeld to look forward to EVERY WEEK. It's too bad we all just assumed TV was going to get better and took it for granted.
Do you guys watch Curb Your Enthusiasm by any chance? Some people like it better than Seinfeld. I don't know if I quite agree, but I'm a MASSIVE Larry David fan now.
