    Hi Gary, I must admit, you won me over. I never used Icloud for my documents. Just last week I started to do that and I love it how all my macs are synchonized on the desktop and documentsfolders. I keep my desktop usaly clean of files (only post-it notes) but had one file on it for my holiday and I saw it suddenly on my Macbook aswell. Really handy.
    I saw an old video from you last week, which persuaded me. I also disovered if you right-click on a file and select delete download, than that file is manually moved only to the cloud. In combination with optimize, like you explained is that really handy to manage yourself if you want to. You inspired me! Although I am a Mac-user more then 10 years, I always watch your video's. Often I have another way of going about my business, but sometimes I am really happy with you. And this was one of those times. Sorry for my poor English, it is not my native language, but many many thanks!

    Hi. Really learn from your videos. If i use iCloud Drive on my iMac and Macbook (and iPhone & iPad) what happens if i have two different files w the same name on either unit or what if i have different versions of the same file on either unit? Also, can you have separate iCloud Drive accounts for different devices (which might defeat the purpose…). Can you help?

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 роки тому +1

      You couldn't normally save a file with the same name even without iCloud Drive. If there is a conflict, it will ask you to resolve it with a prompt. Yes, separate iCloud Drive accounts (Apple IDs) wouldn't make sense.

    50GB of storage for $0.99/mo. is a bargain. Even better is that I have Apple Card and my balance gets zeroed out every month (presumably because it is < $1 on the card). That should change this month with me signing up for Apple Music. Regardless, this video got me looking at my iCloud Drive usage and it seems I have GBs of old junk that I need to look through and likely delete. Thanks Gary!

    Excellent videos! Thank you for doing this. Question: (1) on my iPhone, I have 50 gig of photographs which seems to translate into 173gig in iCloud (I have the 2TB plan). The iPhone photographs are in folders by topic. Do those folders sync to iCloud? to the Mac? (2) I have NEVER used the photos app on the Mac. If I open the photos app will it immediately try to download 173 gig of photographs from iCloud? If yes, will it sync the folders in iOS as well? Thank you! Art

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 роки тому

      Not sure what you mean by "folders by topic" -- do you mean you created some albums? If not, what are some examples of these "topics" you see? If you launch Photos and then go to Photos, Preferences you will see the "Optimize" feature. If you turn that on, then it will work like you iPhone, with only recent and frequently viewed photos cached locally. If you have that off, then it will cache all 173 GB of them so they are on your local drive and ready to be viewed and edited, even offline. As for "folders" you'll need to be more specific: albums?

    hello, in my iPhone and iPad my photo storage is about 2 gb . and in the iCloud is about 50 gb cause I use optimize my photo so it won't take storage. but in my new MacBook it says it is taking 15 gb of storage from the internal storage meanwhile in the iCloud still the same as 50 gb. is here a reason why on my MacBook it takes so much storage? thanks in advance

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 роки тому

      Perhaps because you have the space? One of the factors is how much space you have available. If you have enough it will store more photos locally so they are there if you need them. If you begin to run out of space, it would "optimize" to use less.

    I‘d like to ask you something about bookmarks.
    1. What bookmarks actually do is just to create direct link, direct accesses, like aliases, right? What happens if an html file on the web is removed or taken down or one of your macmosvideo I bookmarked is removed, they will not be available any longer, right?
    2. I have lots of articles, all in html, but downloading them as *mht or converting them to pdf is like too tedious and primitive. Is there a way I can save the full content of an html or a macmostVideo (without commercial purposes of course), straight in a cloud? so even when the content get removed from the web, my bookmarked content will still be available, without the need to download locally.... and then uploading to a cloud? Thank U;).

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 роки тому +1

      Right, it just saves the URL and makes it easy for you to go to it again, instead of having to memorize the URL and type it. If the web page is missing then it would be just like typing a URL to a page that isn't there. You can save an article you are reading as a PDF, certainly. There's no easier way to do it than going to the article and using the menu command to save a PDF. If the page has more complex content, like a video, then it is harder. There's no easy way to do that. Note that just because you are copying content "without commercial purposes" doesn't make it legal in terms of copyright, nor does it make it ethical without asking the creator's permission. It is also probably waste of time as the bookmark is easy, content remains present unless there is a good reason to remove it (which you may want to respect) and you'll see updates and information if you return to the actual content location.

    If I turn on desktop and documents folder in iCloud Drive, are all my documents still being backed up to my time machine?

    • @macmost

      They are not related. Time Machine will back up the documents that are on your Mac. If you turn off Desktop and Documents and decide to store your documents all locally, then Time Machine will back those up, naturally. But if you decide to turn that off and NOT keep documents on your Mac at all (not sure what the situation would be here) then they aren't on your Mac so they can't be backed up.

    Great video. So clear and concise. Two quick question: I have 60.7MB in Mail and the junk and trash folders are empty (which is says to erase) and there's only three emails in it. This isn't taking into account a Gmail or other online accounts, only my Apple iCloud mail, right? I don't understand why it is using up that much space with literally nothing in it.
    Another question is it won't let me turn on Photos in iCloud even though I emptied it. Is it trying to accomodate every photo on the hard drive in Photos? I don't care if it's not in the Cloud as I have it on the Mac and an external harddrive. Thanks for any help!!!!

      For email 61MB is tiny. I wouldn’t worry about it. But if you want to know what it is and can’t figure it out, you’d probably need an expert to take a firsthand look. As for Photos, what error message do you get?

      @@macmost Thank you for the reply. I'll put the email thing on the back burner. I went into my Photos on iMac and just started deleting and deleting and deleting...and deleting. The message I kept getting was that iCloud storage was full, even though I cleared out the iCloud storage on my iPhone, but I hadn't done it on my desktop Mac and apparently that was what was preventing Photo Stream from working. Go figure. I do have a more concise understanding of how this all works from your video so many "thank yous" to you and thank you again for replying! I guess, iCloud takes a Village, right? ;)

    My big fear of cloud storage is synching. I never know what providers are choosing to sync without my knowledge. Also, if I delete a file from my hard drive and put it on an external drive, does it delete the file in the cloud? Lots of problems like this. I was shocked to find that Google Drive, for example, automatically deletes backup files after 30 days. Also, backups often have the wrong creation dates. So the whole thing is a complex mess. It seems more designed for the providers' benefit than for the client's benefit.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  3 роки тому +1

      I think Apple makes it very clear what data is part of iCloud and what data is not. There's a list of checkboxes right there in System Preferences. If a file is in iCloud Drive, which is very easy to see, then if you move it to a location that is no part of iCloud Drive, whether it is an external drive or a non-iCloud folder, then it is removed from iCloud Drive, naturally.

    • @worldwidehappiness
      @worldwidehappiness 3 роки тому

      @@macmost So if I move a file from my Macbook's "Documents" folder to an "Old Documents" folder then it's deleted from iCloud? Then iCloud is useless as a backup drive. That's why I don't like syncing. It doesn't give warnings or anything. You have to remember what's being synched and what's not being synched. There should be a function like, "Don't delete anything without warning". Another example: If I accidentally delete a document, then it's accidentally deleted from iCloud too. Again, that's useless as a backup. Many other cases like this.

      @@ericknorpp8238 The optimize switches (there are two) have nothing to do with Contacts. If you are missing contacts, either wait to see if the sync finishes, or contact Apple Support. WhatsApp is not Apple and it an independent app that has its own way of storing things. You'll need to contact WhatsApp support (does that even exist?) if you want help there. Sounds like you have a lot of issues and want to solve them all. I would contact Apple Support and work with someone or get some direct help from an expert on this. UA-cam comments aren't going to provide the level of support you are seeking here.

    If you have 2TB of iCloud Drive but only 500GB memory on your Mac, it tells you your Mac is full when iCloud Drive gets to 500GB. You then have to move items to an external hard drive or another cloud service to be able to use your Mac. What's the point of 2TB then? Not understanding the point of iCloud Drive I suppose.

      @@paulcaskey That's one person complaining about a single instance of a problem more than 2 and a half years ago! (3 versions of macOS back). And she never even explains what happened. Like was she trying to work with a lot of large files at once? Or did she manually select a lot of files to download? Or was the space being used by something unrelated to iCloud entirely? Just because one person had a problem 2.5 years ago doesn't mean you'll have the same problem today with your Mac and your situation. If you avoided things every time a single person complained you can pretty much forget about using computers, phones, technology, or pretty much anything. And note that people don't make UA-cam videos like that when everything is working fine. Why would they? You see the few people complaining, but the vast majority where everything works fine aren't going to say anything.

    Gary, a lot of you UA-camrs that publish stuff on Apple products seem to focus a lot more on Mac units. In the real world, I would venture to wager that there are many more users of Ipads than Mac users (merely because of the selling price of the units. It would be nice if we could see what is applicable to an Ipad and not just delve totally into Mac computers.
